  • My best attempt at making the most comprehensive video on youtube for opening, cleaning, lubricating, and rebuilding a 2001 Toyota Avalon Ignition Lock Cylinder and (most likely) many other years and various models of Toyota cars. Save $60. - $1,000. by rebuilding your own Ignition Cylinder Lock! Please know that I am an amateur... That being said... I was successful! If you are very careful and NOT RUSHED rebuilding the lock is not that difficult. some years of Toyota have the number 4 and number 7 wafers (tumblers) split in an attempt to increase the lock security. Problem is these wear out over time and can jamb your lock leaving you randomly stranded. If you remove these tumblers, your key still works and your car is still secure... just a bit less secure is all. but then again... when have you ever heard of a car thief picking a lock on an ignition??? If the lock is jammed in the car and you can not get it to release or move the key... then a nearly free DIY rebuild is (most likely) out of the question AND you will have to pay for a tow AND a new Ignition Cylinder Lock & remove or pay to have removed the old jammed lock! I realize that the video production is a bit shabby and I am a bit repetitive but... It is what it is. Bottom Line... you can benefit from my many hours of research simply by investing the time and watching this entire video. In the end... If you take on the project... you will not regret watching this! Please know that I am in no way, shape or form a locksmith so this video is for entertainment purposes only. Please DO NOT contact me asking any technical questions related to this video.

    Well, mine have definitely jammed & was towed last night. It won't even turn to Accessory mode & the Tow truck driver lock the steering wheel. . .now, that won't release.
    Doing myself is one thing. . .but I'm not sure how that drilling part will go. So, I'll just have to pray to get it fix.
    But thank you for the video. . .Blessings to ya from our LORD & SAVIOUR.

    Dude thank you so much! You did an amazing job explaining and showing what you’re doing and what not to do. I just bought same car with 130k runs really good. Except the ignition problem. Took me about a hour or two after watching a couple times and starts like a champ now

      Happy it helped U out and I appreciate your gratefulness. You have an EXCELLENT model of Toyo. It should go 300K at least if U care for it well. If the car makes noise going over bumps or does not handle / ride well, research what are called "quick struts" for ur car. Kaybe are the best aftermarkets as Toyo uses them for their OEM supply. If you install yourself (not super hard) and get it aligned, the car should handle & drive "like new". :-)

    great work this is exactly what im soon to tackle. I thought at first it was too cold (_-12F) the ign refusing to turn all the way so it was unstartable but after heating with heat gun and LOTS of wiggling... it finaly turned enough. Although it soon after began to refuse to turn even when warm. So I did research ... t

    Success! My 1998 Avalon ignition lock recondition worked just as this video. It’s better to make the old cylinder work (with the split wafers removed) since most replacement cylinders and their new keys will NOT provide the security chip required to start the engine. I had to drill out / murder both the first lock pin to slide out the cylinder and also the bezel pin shown in this video. Thanks for the help.

    great vid. just used to fix my 94 Celica, removing the 4 and 7 split pins in the lock. only difference was on the bezel needed to drill out all 3 pins as design is different with no access to get any kind of tool to lever them out.

    Wow! Your video inspired me. My toyota camry is lately engaging the ignition lock every single time now. It is extra difficult today, tried all day to turn on ignition, lubed it with white lithium and after 15 mins hitting the key it finally started. I’m thinking of taking out the ignition cylinder soon, i suspect that the wafers are jammed or worn out

    • @jotu2121
      @jotu2121  3 роки тому

      Congratulations on being able to start your car and thank you for the compliment. At some point what you tried (and it worked) to get your car functioning... will no longer work. The question is, are you willing to be stranded wherever you find out that when it stops working permanently. You should strongly consider doing it much sooner rather than later as a result If you travel long distances much. If you're lazy, you can also just go and buy a replacement cylinder at the store, but then, you'll be forced to use a different set of keys for your doors and trunks as you do for your ignition. If you're cool with that, then that's your fastest solution and I think it cost you roughly $60 -100 for the cylinder. But I'm too cheap and DIY minded to do that. Good luck & please don't risk getting stranded!

    • @jotu2121
      @jotu2121  3 роки тому

      PS, I'm not exactly sure but if you do happen to get permanently locked out of being able to start your car (if memory serves me correctly) you might actually have to be forced to drill that lock cylinder out. If that's the case, it's just one more reason to do it sooner rather than later to avoid that nightmare. I wish you only the best!

      @@jotu2121thank you for your response! Yes I have already talked to a locksmith before going the white lithium grease route, he quoted me $400-500 to replace the cylinder and re-key the car so I dont have to use 2 keys. I dont have that money so i know i have to figure something out🤣 i think i can diy repairing the cylinder, or take the wafers that are getting jammed instead of replacing it altogether then use 2 keys

    • @jotu2121
      @jotu2121  3 роки тому

      @@glggw3384 in that case, you should strongly consider executing what I showed in the video. If you only own one car, I would highly recommend (if you choose to do that) purchasing a new lock cylinder from an auto parts store that you're able to return. That way if you take the old cylinder out, and somehow mess it up, you got the security of knowing that you've got a fresh cylinder that you can put in, rather than being stranded without being able to start your car. If you're careful and follow my video, it really shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't get rushed. It's not that hard. The maid thing is be very careful not to lose the super small springs or wafers and make sure you take special care not to mess up the order of the wafers.

    You said the most genius idea so you don't have to do all that extra stuff why wouldn't you just grind sand or file around the whole cylinder until its smooth than bam your done with pulling or altering any tumblers

      @jotu173 4 роки тому

      Sorry that you're having issues. As I stated in the video notes, I don't provide technical support. That being said, worse comes to worse you can always just buy a new cylinder at an auto parts store. But you'll have to use a different set of keys that come with that cylinder. I'm not sure if that will or will not solve your car thinking the keys are in the ignition problem. That might be a switch or wiring or a connection of some type that is stuck somewhere or just not functioning.
