      You're welcome so! If you don't mind me asking,I have a Yamaha Stage Custom, birch kit. What drumheads would you suggest to cut most of the overtimes and ring I get from the tom's. I just put new clear pinstripes on toms and it's way better than the stock heads but still not the deep this I'm after. Thank you

    OH YEAH!!!! SWEET SOUNDS AS ALWAYS!!! I have small drums, usually a 5x14 snare, 12, 14, 20 so I tune them to make them to sound bigger than they are. I don’t mean JAW but medium low so the shell is activated. When they sound like a 6.5x14, 13, 16,22 I can’t help but smile and get a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

      Ian Isaacs without a doubt the same goes for me on my little drum setups. One of the elements I use in my clinic is tuning tiny drums low like that then flanking them with big drums tuned a bit higher. Toe toe low tones. Thank you for watching and commenting

      Thomas Nussbaum dude thank you so much. If you want a bit lower Reso head tension try F as the Perfect 4th will also kill it at these depths. It may seem like a half step is not much, but defying the 4th or the 5th REALLY makes a huge difference.

    Hi Kenny. Your videos are still the best drum tech videos on the internet. Thanks! What would you guess is the tubing of the al Jackson jr snare on many of those stax recordings? Half interval, with wallet? I am separately trying to figure out how to recreate the sound of the snare on Bowie’s five years. Sounds like intense muffling, but can’t quite get there, any thoughts? Probably too many specific questions, but I thought I’d ask.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому

      Robert Miller Dude thank you so much for the kind words. I would venture to guess with the crisp dry tone it is about a half step interval as you suspect (good ear sir). As far as the fat tone again I think you are correct in that they had something with mass on the snare (wallet, tape, tea towel). Mufflers like that add mass which adds heft to the tone. That’s why a lot of the mufflers like Snare Wallet or Big Fat Snare Drum get the tones they do in the studio. Thx as always for watching my brother. Hope you are well.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words, and for watching. It’s really up to how the drum reacts, what sound you are wanting, and the drummer likes it. That being said tuning a snare away from a fundamental you hit a lot can help reduce sympathetic snare buzz.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  Рік тому

      On the Dyna it has the wires on a frame. On the Ludwig it’s most likely 24 Strand Custom Pros from Puresound. Aluminum Drums are the buzziest. 🤘🤘🤘

    Great sounds there, love your videos. Any tips for dealing with deep narrow beds such as those on some Ludwig jazz fests ? would you tend to tune the lugs next to the beds higher or lower ? thanks again.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому

      Michael127gerard thank you so much for the kind words. Man that is an eternal debate so I’ll offer this. 1. Do what works for you. I’ve had drums with shallow beds that sound better by detuning the lugs around the snare bed , and some that sound better tuned evenly to or (even crazier) higher than the the other lugs. 2. For shallow snare beds it’s best to have a snare wire plate with pitch. Like Puresound’s Custom pros or pitched models from Fat Cat. A pitched plate helps press the snare wires into the head reducing unwanted snare rattle/buzz. Thank you for watching, commenting, and for the kind words. 💪🏻

    hi kenny !!! Excellent your videos and explanations !!! Consult .. what do you mean by high tension or low tension? the C and G are in the same octave? in 3rd octave? thanks and congratulations !!!

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  3 роки тому +1

      By high tension I mean a tight head, by low tension I mean a loose head. I’ll have to look at the video again, but in some cases yes C3/G3 if it can hold the tension. That would be a fat snare tuning. Also C3/G4 that would be a fat but crisper sound., and of course C4/G4. Crack city. Thank you for watching.

  • @HalfAcreFarms
    @HalfAcreFarms 4 роки тому +2

    How would you tune a 6.5x14 ? Same perfect 5th?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому

      Paul Walden for low fat tones on 6.5” deep snares I tend to use the perfect 4th (C/F in this case) as it beefs up the sound, while controlling the ring of the drum a bit more.

  • @lp8705
    @lp8705 4 роки тому +1

    Hi Kenny this might b a crazy question but have you ever used 2 ply heads as reso heads before? If you have what were the results

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому

      On snares? NEVER. Not enough sensitivity. I know in DC the hip thing is to put Evans Resonant Glass heads on the bottoms of snares, but I'm just not a fan. If your wires are set properly, and the drum is tuned you won't need to do that to control snare buzz OR get a tight sound. As far as toms go yes I have. Again not my fave BUT in the appropriate situation the sound is killer. Super tight, with little resonance. Thx for watching, thx for asking.

  • @Kodos3000
    @Kodos3000 4 роки тому +1

    So two things about tuning.
    I've had success tuning to pitches on toms. It's pretty easy . Snare is way more difficult especially snare side head. There's never any "clear" note to me at that high tension. Any suggestions ? Second question. I'll never understand how folks get their toms to sound so muffled . My toms sing like a choir with three moongels yours sound almost 70's dead . What are you doing with them ?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому

      Kodos 3000 hit the edge of the bottom snare like a rimshot. Then listen for the high harmonic, use a pitch reference to find the pitch you think it is. Hopefully you are right. If not by having a reference pitch you can find the pitch of the head.
      These toms resonate for days with Clear redos, and G1’s of G2’s, bug I’ve been using Reso 7’s to tighten the drum up. Then I added UV1’s on top to review them for Evans. Super tub thump lol! Half gels just to warm the attack. Cotton Ball stretched out in each tom. The goal was a natural feeling, natural sounding tight tom sound with good attack, and a controlled decay. Use headphones to hear the full effect cause they singing but with restraint. 🤣🤣🤣 Thx for watching.

    • @Kodos3000
      @Kodos3000 4 роки тому +1

      @@KennySharretts Ahhh ..... The old cotton ball trick. I have a few in my floor tom and I don't know why ( brain fart ?) never thought about using them on my rack toms. • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому

      Kodos 3000 likewise my friend. Please note the UV1’s were the key to the lockdown of sustain. When I had clear G2’s on top, they sang well with the perfect amount of sustain. Thx for watching, and commenting sir.
