    This is one of the best tuning videos I've seen. Very direct and to the point and plenty of helpful side notes. Thanks for the video.

    His snare drum tone on latest DARK FUNERAL album is the best snare tone for blast beats I've heard since Morbid Angel's Covenant! I can't get enough enough of that album!

    Listened to a lot of drummers talking about how they tune their kits, none of their methods clicked for me, lots of them just say "feel" and while I agree it does matter, I wanted a more professional method. I always knew there was more than just feel involved in all those great sounding drum recordings by big studios. They sounded musical, like an instrument should.
    I used your chart for my drums and the results speak for themselves, well at least I like them. This is the kind of sound I was going for, even though I don't do extreme metal, I do anything I like. I also like the fact that you don't shy away from tuning the kick drum high.
    Thank you!

    Thank you for the cheat sheet of the notes. Tuning toms is the hardest part for me, and the PDF hopefully will help.

    Hey thank you for this awesome info. I am in a deep dive on the internet right now when it comes to drums tuning. Mainly for recording purposes so this helped a lot. And i see that many recording engineers use this aproach for tuning drums. Minor third interval between the reso and batter on the toms, loose kick heads, tight reso on the snare and then tune trhe batter for the tone. I see that this method is repetable and not some voodoo tuning that some people go on about on the internet. I just want to maintain the drum tuning :D And you know how drummers are. Many claim to know how to do it but few actually do :D Cheers from Slovenia and thanks again.

    Very nice and informational Video! I have a question regarding your tuning chart: Why do you tune one octave higher with the tune bot and does it apply to the snare aswell?

    • @obsidianrecordingstudios
      @obsidianrecordingstudios  2 роки тому

      In my experience the tunebot would almost always hear the higher octave easier than the actual fundamental tone when tuning the individual lugs... however I did NOT find this to be the case when checking the resonance of the ENTIRE drum (TARGET TOM NOTE). The tunebot has a filter option and you can sit there and hit the lugs forever until it finds the fundamental tone, then press 'filter' but I just found this to be a waste of time when tuning big kits, so the chart uses the higher octave when tuning individual lugs with a tunebot. If remember correctly it was the same for the snare... I'm not certain tho I haven't used a tunebot in forever!

    As I was watching the video I noticed myself tune similarly. The toms tho, I just tune to an interval between them and I like having the bottom heads a bit lower. Snares are kind of a pain for me. Good video :)

    Looking to get more separation when micing toms. Also, better rebound. Any videos on that?

    • @obsidianrecordingstudios
      @obsidianrecordingstudios  Місяць тому +1

      Room size and treatment matters. The further away and more treated the walls are the less reflections you get coming back into the mics so that's huge. Angling the mics so that they get as little bleed as possible from the other parts of the kit (check out this one ua-cam.com/video/bBCP34MG2hI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ObsidianRecordingStudios). SDC's will take less bleed than LDC's and large diaphragm dynamic microphones so try the SM98 it is god.. very controlled bleed and huge sound, way less bleed than a 421. More rebound? I'm not a drummer... tune higher!?

    I'm a little confused... so you tune both heads lower than the desired note but when you hit the tom with both heads resonating you're supposed to get a higher note somehow?

    Man…pretty complex actually and requires a good ear. There’s also a lot of nuance to it. With modern guitar strings like D’addario NYXLs and headless bridge/headpiecesI don’t even have to stretch my damn strings anymore when throwing a new set on. Seriously I tune up to pitch, play for maybe 3-4 minutes and re-time. That’s it. I’m basically in tune then for the life of the strings.

    Why coated head for snare top?

    • @anttiniilola8896
      @anttiniilola8896 3 роки тому +2

      I think for faster decay (blast beats). Therefore better definition. Maybe for warm sound too. I've been using coated batter heads for snare quite always. Clear heads for everything else. I play black metal (nowadays).
      Very, very, very educational video. Tons of thanks for this. Jannelle terveisiä. Siis molemmille, Väätäiselle ja Jalomalle.

      Just sounds more like a snare should to my ears I guess...? Something about the attack and texture of coated heads... try the controlled sound black dot coated if you can. Both the 10 and 12 mil ones are very cool! If you compare those to one of the clear ones you'll probably hear why.
