The match you're talking about with Bill Cooper Vs Otavio Sousa with the underpants disqualification happened at worlds in 2007, I was a blue belt at the time and was promoted to purple after the tournament. There was no rule on no underpants at the time and in fact many Brazilians including my own professor competed without underpants all of the time. In 2004 Bill was still a purple belt and I know this because I went to school in Santa Barbara and started training with Bill and Jeff at Paragon when the school was still in a tiny room on Milpas street. I trained there for a year before I moved back home to Northern California. What Actually happened is Otavio pulled Bills pants down with the grip behind the back and Bill's bare ass was out in front of everyone. While this was unfortunate there was no rule against no underwear and that rule about underwear was made up on the spot. Biggest robbery against an American to scam them out of a gold medal because I believe Bill was also winning the match at that point.
"unless I see you at 6am when the sun is rising and our pupils are dilated, I will never fully trust you, or respect you." Hell yeah brother. Love that. 100% iykyk
Literally was drawn into trying BJJ because of Rogan and Jocko and that got me over the anxiety of joining, but Craig is the man who got me to want to really give it a shot and learn more. I went from being a twice a week gi half-in kind of person to training Nogi every single day I can and constantly watching technique videos and competitions. Craig, don’t undersell your own role lol I was like “this guy seems cool, holy shit that’s a weird move I wanna do that” and that got me to dive deeper as a hobbyist
I trained with a cop that worked in Santa Barbara and he told me he had run ins with Bill Cooper all the time. Still respectful and polite to the police. He just lives a crazy life.
Love to hear bill cooper getting love. Good homie and such a talent. He was like the OG Nicky Ryan. Young prodigy. Wild guy. He’s definitely hard to track down. He’s definitely known to vanish off the radar for a while. I got so much of my darce and triangle and passing game from Bill. He became one of my coaches at brown belt for a brief while. One of the best all time runs at Worlds by an American ever. Legend.
"I was chasing her with a fucking samurai sword, and 15 cops came," he said. He had been awake for over 20 straight days on a drug binge when his kid's mother came late to pick up their son. Their son started crying, because he wanted to stay with Bill. But she ripped the child from Bill's arms. When Bill stormed out of his room with the sword, his dad called the police. Bill went to county jail, which led to drug and alcohol court and learning to get sober. Bill went through a six-month program. He had a couple of relapses, but when I spoke with him, he had been sober for nine months.
Honestly guys, if we're going to talk about what motivated me to start BJJ, it's you guys... The fucking B-team. The starting lineup... I'm not exaggerating! Someone wrote a really nice comment, you guys from the B-team make jiu-jitsu cool again, just like skateboarding used to be cool. Joe Rogan and Jocko and others were there for us regular people. Dope shit!
Shout Out to Craig Jones for keeping it all the way real. A lot of these hardcore Competition dudes seem to lack a basic level of self awareness as it pertains to the value they supposedly bring to society as a whole. Craig spoke the truth, most of these guys are indeed arrogant assholes, and walk around with a level of fake fame. It's refreshing to hear a one of these guys actually show some self awareness. At the end of the day, Jiujitsu/Submission Grappling will always be driven by everyday participants, and not a small group of arrogant competitors that somehow think they are the saviors of the art/sport. Please get over yourself's.
Craig is right. I actually started with BJJ after seeing Rogan's podcast and gave it a shot. Watching gi competition would not motivate me to start at all. Even as a practicioner it is sometimes hard to watch. I don't understand why there are not more events like Quintet. Their format was entertaining as f...for broader public :) Anyway, good job with B-team channel, and keep the podcast rolling 🌯
@@groovetomanny That is hard to overcome even for me who had done BJJ/wrestling off and on but i knew what would fix my depression and now im nearly a brown belt a few years later by just turning up (I still feel like im a blue belt... im not sure how i got here lol). From there its basically just turning up consistently and not worrying about belts or comparing yourself to others to much (Especially not these guys).
tbh what made jiujitsu popular was UFC 1, atleast for me it got me into bjj after seeing royce gracie choke out that kungfu dude and also when he beat kimo and keith hackney, but greg has a point, joe and eddie truly popularized bjj to regular joes
One can be a Professor of many things outside of academic studies. John Danaher can be a Professor of JiuJitsu and grappling as he knows so much. The same for any other very knowledgeable Jiujitsu coach.
Lutes actually was out for a while because Craig f*cked up his leg so badly. Marcelo would go on to use it as an example in class about how your principal defense to leg locks should be defending the initial entanglements because once you're there you can get in so much trouble.
I agree with the "jiu-jitsu saved my life part", Jiu-jitsu is a sport, nothing more, nothing less, like running, only more expensive. I like running, but I like jiu-jitsu more, so if I would run as much as I do jiu-jitsu, I would get the same benefits. There is nothing mystical or magical about it, not more than there is to running, and yes, if you didn't make it by 30 you won't be in youtube or the world sphere of high competence, that doesn't mean you shouldn't practice, but don't give it any weird significance. The hobbysts are the ones who "keep the lights on" as someone wisely said, not the world champions. I only wish I'd like running more, at least it's cheaper.
Id have to agree with the spazzyness. If Nikrod would relax more instead of relying on brute wrestling spazzy strength. If he turned is game into a calm chess match he would dominate.
A guy actually did kill himself because of To Catch a Predator. That is why the show was canceled. Chris and Dateline wanted to make a whole story and let it slide, dude found out and well…
Serious question: has anyone good actually ever been tapped by an Achilles lock from 50/50? It is the completely wrong mechanics in that position. I feel like the person trying it and the person tapping to it should both be demoted back down to blue belts for it.
Craigs ability to just talk virtually by himself is amazing

Who is that?
Craig talks very nicely about most of the new wave guys because he knows they will end up joining b team
