Going Back to Pakistan: 70 Years After Partition | Witness

  • "Before I die, I want to go back to where I was born." Krishan Kumar Khanna grew up just outside Lahore, Pakistan's second-largest city. After a childhood he remembers fondly, his life changed dramatically in August 1947.
As Britain left the Indian subcontinent, colonial planners hastily split it into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan.
Khanna was forced to join one of the largest migrations in human history, as sectarian violence erupted and millions fled in both directions to save their lives.
He has dreamed of going back ever since and, after trying for several years, Khanna finally obtained a visa to return to Pakistan.
Despite deep tensions, he's determined to show that people in the neighbouring nations still have much more in common than that which divides them.

I'm a Pakistani. I can't stop my tears and cried after watching this video. This video is so heart touching. The main cause of hatred and all the problems is Britishers i.e. their policy was divide peoples and rule over subcontinent. They fought the peoples for their occupency. And the hatred is continue yet that was aggravated by British government at that time. There were peace and prosperity before the British government occupation. ✨✨ Hope for the best ❤️

Losing home, friends, family and living most of the life wondering what could've been. Everyone I know/knew from his generation has the same emotion.

Throughout the story...my eyes were filled with tears listening to Bau Ji's emotions... made me recall, my mother used to tell me that in those days, my naana ji had to spend 3 days and 3 nights on a tree in fear of being killed from a mob chasing him on the way to home, then on 4th day a hindu gentleman and his famiiy came forward to help. They had hidden naanu's identity to save my naana ji....whosoever came in their house, they introduced my naana ji as their own son given with a name fake name of Aatma Ram. Few days later they dropped my naanu at home in dark. People never wanted divisions but Hunger of power and politics did so.

Just reminded me of my grandfather. He was Pakistani Sikh. He kept longing for Pakistan until end of his life. He was also from Shaikhupura. I just realised and felt tiny bit of his pain and grief. I swear, when I was growing up there wasn't even a single day when he didn't talk about Pakistan or mentioned something about Pakistan and his friends there. I couldn't stop crying throughout the whole video. Wish these two countries can become one once again and may we can see end of this hate in politics and media that keeps putting nails in the coffin of the love to bury it forever. Thanks Aljazeera.

Amardeep Singh we welcome all with love but it is not possible neither desirable to reunite.. rather we shoshoud have better relation and live like Canada and usa or European union. That is the model we should follow
But that can only happen after the solution of kashmir dispute. It's really not in interest of India to delay this matter any long. It.will be good for the whole region and.all countries involved to get out of this mad war tensions and resources wasted on defence and offence machinery. Rather making open borders and friendly relations will allow for using that money for education and health care. Infrastructure development etc. Peace is the way forward.

My grandfather was brutally beaten by them and later when they thought him dead, left him on railway track and his intestines were literally out but by god's grace he was so brave and strong, he had only 5rs with him. He went to the hospital himself got his treatment done and later came to India and found his family. All the family members thought he was dead. Many of us may have stories so I thought why not share mine. :) Have a nice day

Indian Constituent Assembly (In the chairmanship of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar)
Even today also, The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) opposes the Child Marriage Act on the grounds that it contravenes the Muslim personal law.

My entire maternal family migrated from Pakistan. Both my Nanaji and Naniji migrated from Sialkot. The name of their native village was Kot Ram Das which of course was changed to a different name after partition (I don't remember the changed name). My Naniji passed away in 2007 but my Nanaji who is 87 years old and is bed bound speaks highly about Pakistan. He had the opportunity to visit Pakistan in 1997 and I remember he bringing back loads and loads of gifts which the local people from his village in Pakistan gifted him. He always spoke highly of Lahore and he still says 'jis ne Lahore ka Anarkali Bazar nai dekha usne is pure jahan Mai kuch nahi dekha". Thanks for sharing this video. This reminded me of the conversations I had with my Nanaji about Pakistan and how his eyes use to light up when he spoke about it. I too wish I could visit his anscestral home one day.
