- For centuries India's social structure was built around a rigid Hindu caste system. While the caste system was constitutionally abolished in 1950, its legacy still deeply affects contemporary Indian society.
The Hindu population, around 84 percent of the 1.2 billion people that live in the country, is still influenced by the four main traditional castes, which also have their own sub-sects: Brahmins, the priestly and academic class; Kshatriya, the warrior caste; Vaishya, which comprises the business community; and Shudra, the working class.
Outside these four groups are others, including the Dalits, who are at the bottom of the hierarchy.
Dalits have traditionally done jobs considered ritually impure, like garbage collection, street sweeping, the cremation of dead bodies and the disposal of human waste.
With Dalits continuing to face prejudice and discrimination within their own communities, some try to find social acceptance by converting to Buddhism, Christianity, Sikhism or Islam.
"It bothers me whenever I introduce myself. People ask about my surname," says Rakesh, who's a dhobi, the washerman caste.
Rakesh has converted to Islam and changed his name to Ali Kanojia.
"I tell them my name is Rakesh. They ask, 'Rakesh what?' They normally ask you this at a Hindu's house," he says.
But conversion is not simply a way out - prejudices still carry over into other religions. Many converts face resistance and even violence from their families or the communities they were born into and the new chosen faith can pose a different set of challenges - like those faced by Ali Kanojia from his own family.
"It's not easy to convert to Islam," he says. "They [the family] say it's not right. I ask, Why? They say it's because Muslims have a bad reputation."
Abdulrahman Bharti's conversion to Islam almost cost him his life.
"I got shot by Hindu people from the Sawar clan ... . When a person converts, the new religion welcomes them, but people from the old religion try to stop them. If they can't, they'll try to kill them. This happened to me," says Bharti who was shot in the chest and leg.
After independence in 1947, the Indian government introduced positive discrimination in favour of low caste groups, but not everyone enjoys the same benefits.
It’s a highly complex benefit structure with certain jobs, education opportunities and political representation reserved for different social and religious groups.
The Reservation Act covers a wide range of eventualities, but for Dalits the disadvantages of conversion may arguably outweigh the advantages, especially when it comes to jobs.
"The protection includes Sikhs and Jains, and Buddhists, but it doesn't include Christians and Muslims, so what happens is that they get excluded from those - the quotas for SCs [Scheduled Castes]," says Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director for Human Rights Watch.
Kanojia, for instance, has not been able to get a government job.
"If you don't have a lower caste certificate you won't get a reserved job. I don't have the lower caste certificate. My parents were illiterate and had little understanding of things... I can't get a job anywhere," says Kanojia.
Set primarily in Mumbai and in the Madhya Pradesh countryside, this film provides an insight into conversion to other religions - the social reformer and principal architect of the Indian constitution, BR Ambedkar, was born a Dalit and converted to Buddhism and many followed in his footsteps - and the processes for finalising conversions.
We hear the personal stories of different Dalit Muslims and the campaign of one man, descended from Muslim converts, to end garbage picking and discrimination against Dalits in Madhya Pradesh.
This is part of a broader struggle where castes, clans and religions determine the course of millions of lives.

@@bhathilal1152 It's more like 'culture' problem not religious ones. Even at the first time, only Hindu which uses caste system in India. But the fact, India has Hindu cultural root. So the caste can't be removed even he/she move to other religion without caste system.
The caste has change from religious practice to cultural practice. If people around him/her think he/she is dalit, so forever he/she will be. Except the culture is change.
On others documentary about dalit. There's a woman dalit and Hindu.She is moving to USA, what happen? Nobody cares about her caste and she can be free from caste system. The problem isn't Hinduism (religion) but the culture and people around. People can change their culture if they want. At the first of this documentary, its said, "The caste system has been abolished", its mean no formal caste problem. But there's unformal problem on mindset and culture.

Like this verse says, your ancestros felt themselves subdued by invading islamic army in your country and had to live as dhimmis initially (until they converted).

Mostafizur Rahman A Dalit converting to Islam is still a Dalit. You can’t get away from what you are. That doesn’t mean you can’t better yourself. Education is available to everyone and without it it doesn’t matter what caste or religion you are, you will struggle.

Read sociology before commenting. There are caste in every religion in india except perhaps in Buddhism and Parisis. Hinduism is based on hierarchy of caste and being so powerful system it started influencing other religion in due course of time. Sikhism promotes equality but there are dalits like Ramdasis, Majhabi sikh. Among Muslims Pashmanda Muslims are dalits. In Christians dalits have separate churches in some states. Start educating yourself.

I am hindu and i am happy for my dalit brother who converted to islam . I am a sudra and I wish i was brave enough to convert to islam . As a sudra i feel like i am inferior and upper castes are superior race . Hope oneday all my sudra brothers get together and convert or leave hinduism and free themselves from lower caste and to be called sudra

Dalits never convert to Islam in search of better fortunes. In fact they are at a loss when they do so because if they convert to Islam, they lose the reservations they get in jobs and university admissions. This is high hypocrisy of the Indian political establishment that they claim that all religions are equal before constitution but in reality Dalit Hindus, Dalit Sikhs, Dalit Budhists get the reservations but muslim Dalits are deprived of it. Even a person who used to enjoy the reservations, can not continue to do so if converts to Islam. Basically the reservations in India were introduced to stop dalits from converting to Islam so that the Hindu majority and thus Hindu political supremacy could be kept intact.

And why should conversion to a non-Indian religion be encouraged or rewarded in India? Just because India is a secular country does not mean that Hindus should accept Abrahamic imperialism. India has always been a hindu state since 1947 but it always portrayed this cover of Secularism as a show off to cover its crimes. but now as you said india would shun the hypocrisy and be declared a hindu state, you would have to answer to the world that what would be your treatment of the religious minorities ? would you still keep massacring them in riots, would you still keep demolishing mosques and burning churches ? would you still keep saving and honoring the extremists who execute such atrocities on minorities and dalits ? don't forget that Pakistan has given its minorities reservations in jobs and universities at both state and national level while muslims in India have been cornered to the most bottom of the economic spectra. would you do such a thing for minorities ? india is trying to gain a permanent seat in the UN security council and you claim India would be declared a Hindu state soon. So definitely you would have to answer all those question ? I dont think so you would be able to answer those and that is why this fake cover of secularism suits you better coz the govt can say that this is secular country, reservations can not be given on the basis of religion. even the most communal of the prime ministers so far does the drama of secularism when goes on foreign trips or when foreign media speaks about atrocities on minorities. Actually Hypocrisy is your style. when in India, you would express the most hateful and violent behavior against muslims and christians but when you have to go out to earn dollars and petro dollars in christian and muslim lands, you wear this mask of secularism and peace to fool the locals.

We offered him water and food. He was a nice man. I felt very sorry for him. Now I know why he did that job. It's a shame on humanity to let this culture go on!

Next is the administrative class, technically called the kṣatriyas due to their being situated in the mode of passion. The mercantile men, called the vaiśyas, are situated in the mixed modes of passion and ignorance, and the śūdras, or laborer class, are situated in the ignorant mode of material nature. In spite of His creating the four divisions of human society, Lord Kṛṣṇa does not belong to any of these divisions, because He is not one of the conditioned souls, a section of whom form human society. Human society is similar to any other animal society, but to elevate men from the animal status, the above-mentioned divisions are created by the Lord for the systematic development of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The tendency of a particular man toward work is determined by the modes of material nature which he has acquired. Such symptoms of life, according to the different modes of material nature, are described in the Eighteenth Chapter of this book. A person in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, however, is above even the brāhmaṇas. Although brāhmaṇas by quality are supposed to know about Brahman, the Supreme Absolute Truth, most of them approach only the impersonal Brahman manifestation of Lord Kṛṣṇa. But a man who transcends the limited knowledge of a brāhmaṇa and reaches the knowledge of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, becomes a person in Kṛṣṇa consciousness - or, in other words, a Vaiṣṇava. Kṛṣṇa consciousness includes knowledge of all different plenary expansions of Kṛṣṇa, namely Rāma, Nṛsiṁha, Varāha, etc. And as Kṛṣṇa is transcendental to this system of the four divisions of human society, a person in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is also transcendental to all divisions of human society, whether we consider the divisions of community, nation or species.
