- 101 East investigates how every year, tens of thousands of girls and women in India are trafficked into slave marriages.
10 Nov 2016 23:05 GMT International Women's Day, India, Human trafficking, slavery
Decades of sex selection favouring male babies have left some Indian states with vastly more men than women, creating a lucrative and growing market for traffickers.
In the patriarchal and feudal state of Haryana where there's a shortage of women to marry, it's normal for men to buy young girls trafficked from other states.
Known as "paros", a term implying they can be purchased, they are regularly raped, forced into marriages and made to work as bonded labour.
Their uneducated families are often tricked into agreeing to send them away, lured by the idea of a happy marriage for their daughters. But tragically, there is no "happily ever after".

For real, I bet they have a gender problem like china.

the saddest thing was when sanjida said her father found her after 4 years and tried to take her back but as she was pregnant she couldn't return...so he stayed close by for 2 months to make sure they treated her well. The emotion in her voice when she talked about that broke my heart :(

My Punjabi Dad, almost 60, still believes women must only stay home and fetch for their husbands whatever they desire. And he works during the day so he has the mindset that he deserves being treated like a king at the end of a very tough day. This concept he was taught by his father and he passed on to his sons. Instead of requiring to play the national anthem in movie theaters India should play videos about equal rights and talk about discrimination and castes , not just in movies but in the tv also, media has a very strong influence on society
And expect people who can't even 'stand' the national anthem to watch videos on gender discrimination? Fat chance.

I cried when I saw the mother hugging her daughter.
Same....but later I got shocked.
But then I noticed it's normal for women to get attracted to men who have more materialistic/financial power than her or her parents. They just go blind. They won't care for her culture, language, family and relationship from back in Home.
This make me realise that how much blessed we are 😔
Shame on the families who don’t take their daughters back after being trafficked.
I know. I would have taken my kidnapped daughter back even if she has had 12 kids!
Please don't shame the families... They live in a place where their dignity is solely judged based on women's marital status and the society that influences them... In most of the Indian rural community when a girl gets married she becomes a property of her husband, in suck kind of places if a girl runs away from her abusive husband, or if the family takes away their married daughter from her husband; both the girl and their whole family will be ridiculed and ostracized by their community.
So we should not just blame the family but the whole community as well.
You don't understand the culture. The "spoiled " woman might even be killed by neighbors if she returns home. Usually the families can't afford to feed their children either. Superstitious, uneducated, extremely impoverished people. Terrible. Heartbreaking.

Watching this makes me realized how important education is.
Good point! It's not about legislation, but about education from early age.
Sometimes education doesn't let people change their lives.
Look at the educated people on power. They are simply corrupted beyond recognition. All they want is more power and money. What we need is poeple with good morals and humanity.

My heart goes out to these unfortunate naive children who are trapped by the montrous traffickers..their parents are already poverty stricken and on top of that their children are stolen from them which aggravates their miseries..the plight of these young girls greatly depresses me..we have so much comfort and safety and yet we are always complaining rather than being grateful for whatever we have...It is in these remote parts of rural India that real development should take place...Getting detached from parents and that too at such a tender age is unbearable...what these girls go through can hardly be expressed in words.. How can human beings be so barbaric that they are selling off children..and what kind of mentality do these depraved buyers have? Women are to be respected and not seen as a commodity which can be bought and sold on a whim... Proper education and awareness can make them more alert and self-dependent...but these steps are easier said than done...we lack collective action to ward off such adversities...

A culture of blaming the victims on top of everything...
Thats why GOD does not bless them. Mho
This is happening in so many countries
@kalpana gupta you probably belong to a select privileged class which explains your views but the sad irony of india is while there are successful women like Kalpana Chawla (from Haryana as well) and even yourself, there are countless other women who have suffered or continue to suffer the plight. Next time you visit India go and see for yourself and you will realise how lucky you are and how your family empowered you as opposed to these souls. Its not even a question of poverty or lack of knowledge but a general mindset against women in some indian societies. And the ones documented here are not even a fraction of the real cases just like rape cases in India, most rape cases are not even registered or accounted for.
@kalpana gupta well maybe rape cases don't reflect society but the way society reacts to rape cases tells a lot like the hathras case and innumerable cases before and after where the authority and society just reacts in such an inhumane way that you're left wondering that WTF is wrong with people. Secondly I'm not talking about you being some rich brat to be counted as privileged, maybe i too belong to the same economic strata as you but even i consider myself to be lucky that my family was able to provide decent education and means, in a country where its hard to come by. I'm happy for you whatever you have achieved but still madame think about it. Every one goes through a lot of struggle and cannot be compared by any parameters but still people like you and me are still lucky that we could make it work.
@kalpana gupta salute to you, India need more of Kalpanas but true we r a failed society too on many parameters

Abby Lowe that's not true.. law in itself provide women all rights.. it's the people whose mindset has to be changed

India is a land of such contrasts. The main problem is patriarchy, and unless people change their mindset, it is difficult to bring about any reform
Naturally Amanda
Right! I noticed that too. I wondered about the police women and their lives. But they definitely had an authority presence about them.
Abby Lowe this is India not the Middle east. There is more of a tolerance for women in the work force. There are many female officers in India. They do not get killed for it

“Whatever I went through, they should not have to suffer that.” A quote all families in cycles of abuse should hear ❤️
When men create a hierachy or class system instead of respect for all living beings, there will be abuse. Abuse of women, children, animals, handicapped. We need education to respect all beings who can feel pain and suffering for a start to create a better society and world. Unfortunate men dominated societies will try to prevent this to maintain their control.
For the little time I was in India, I grew up in a very safe area. My whole family are very educated people, the rural areas and trafficking are kept secret from the middle and higher ups to prevent any drama. It aches my heart knowing this is the India I never saw
Ehh that’s a flimsy excuse. How can you be educated and not know what’s going on in your country? If the rest of the world knows then so do you. There was legit a huge protest a few years ago from a brutal gang rape and death of a university student. There was even a documentary about it.

@Wake Up India 🇮🇳 Women and children are sold? News to me, unless you are talking about prostitution. Still, I suppose it makes you feel better about your garbage culture and country to believe that.

I feel so sad for that mother, traveling so far and then being rejected by her daughter. :-/
Jacquelynn North To be fair, there’s a reason she didn’t go with her even though she wanted to. Her mother would have gladly taken her back but if she left, she’d most likely never find another husband since her reputation would be ruined.... so she’s stuck with the one she has and if she seemed overly welcoming to her mother her husband and his family would be angry and likely punish her severely. She did what she had to to protect herself the best way she knew how.
Im sure she would've loved to go home, unfortunately. .her daughter no longer being a virgin..her prospects are limited and she is most likely being abused by her husband and family. If she acted happy..she may have been subject to more abuse.
Zeynab Uthman that's very disappointing and disgusting looking how women are so tied to that bias culture. I respect Indian culture bt why only women suffering?. they are human like men even better, they deserve all our kindness and respect.

in India everyone who joins police force they join it with an intention of earning millions in bribes and female police officers are no different. the only reason why the local female cop went to that house is because she already took huge bribe from the buyer/groom or maybe that trafficker is from her caste. This documentary shows how strong women are, how we are able to just accept so much terrible things in our lives. Sad reality, its a mans world...
Grow up
@luna lollzz Accountability for what? Empathy for what? Are you so dumb you cannot even formulate your thoughts? Usually 4 year old kids can this much better than you.
Move to the usa women have equal rights here.
@Lady Shri HE IS A PSYCHO.
@@lowercase21 HAHAHAHA..THATS THE BEST JOKE I HAVE HEARD..
This is where feminists should fight for feminism. These women scream for help.
YA THE FEMINISTS WHO GO NUDE ON FB AND SLEEP WITH A DIFFERENT MAN DAILY... YOU MEAN THOSE?
@@innernet3371 the actual feminist!! Not them!
Point dexter That’s complete rubbish. The woman and the man at the forefront of the movement to help these women are feminists! Your sense of what a feminist is ... stereotypes and bias... feminism is about Human Rights.
@@innernet3371 get back on your medication, sweetheart. You are blabbing nonsense again.
@Point dexter meanwhile, what are YOU doing to help these women? Nothing of course. Just being a keyboard warrior. Nothing remotely special in that.
Thank aljajira for this video,

To be very very honest and being an Indian myself, it is all for the camera. Here in India, the police is itself involved in almost every heinous crime in some or the other way. We have the most corrupt police system when compared to any other country!!
This is so so heartbreaking 😭 I pray for your beautiful strength🙏🏻 you are courageous and im so sorry 😭🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
