This was a good album. I like that he tried to present the music within a unique context. We could use more artists trying to push products out in novel ways. I would have liked more features on this, though.
I think this entire album was about him wanting to find his purpose in life.. a lot of the songs on the album are depressing and about being alone, lost and confused. 3005 a song some people think is a love song is really about being alone and only having yourself at the end of the day. flight of the navigator is also about being alone and lost. Donald had to actually feel these feelings to make such believable songs.. and I completely understand why he left community after listening to the album. he wants to find himself and create his own legacy while he is still on this earth.. most people never get to do what they want to do in life and just follow the crowd. this album is about living your life to the fullest because you don't know when it will end. Donald had to experience a lot of loss to write this album it's the only thing that would make you write something like this... I'd never thought I say this but kanye should be taking notes from Donald glover. even donald's production skills seem better on this album then kanye's were on yeezus.
I hope some of them took the time to read the script cause its freaking incredible. Its a whole different experience, rather than an explanation for the album. They'd also realize that this is the sequel to CAMP if they read the script. Ken said in the "camp" review that he thinks Bino could follow up that story thats told at the end of "That Power" in CAMP. Well here you go Ken, its this album.
And it's crazy too bc when I first read the script, I absolutely hated it bc it was too sporadic, anticlimactic, and I hadn't really digested the album fully. Fast forward to today and from what I recall about the script, it is almost exactly the same style as Atlanta, which is one of my favorite shows of last year. It's incredible how he has it all figured out. Like even though that's not a thing, wouldn't it be a fucking mind trip if "The Boy" is Earn and he got kicked out of Princeton for his drug arrest in the script (that happened, didn't it?)
Thank you DEHH for reviewing this album. Its my favorite album of 2013. I'm still playing this cd non-stop. I just wish Gambino could get more exposure. I don't hear him on the radio where I live.
Myke just blew my mind with that Pink Toes analysis. aww shit. The script is good too. It's just like a story and the music gives background or references that people might have passed in their listen to the album. For example, the part where he talks about not getting it up correlates to the part of the script where he's in the bedroom with two girls and was just lost instead of going at it. The story is more like a Hip-Hop Great Gatsby. If you have 2-3 hours to spend, it's definitely worth checking out
I cant lie i dont really like this album, I was lost without a road map or gps, although Im happy as it/this review lead me to camp which I LOVE!. That said Zealots is fucking great I only wished it was longer, like MAD longer that beat is sick and gambino clearly can spit
you guys review things and like things I don't understand you like sometimes, but I am so glad I can always agree with you guys on Childish Gambino !!!
Agreed and dude definitely bro I'd love to chat more on some dope Gambino subjects. But bro how far do you go back with Gambino? What was the first project you heard?
***** YESSSS BRO I KNOW!!! I SAW THAT I WAS INCREDIBLY EXCITED! But we all know who's going to win the best rap album and best rap performance sadly enough... I'm saddened. He deserves it. His album was the best rap album of 2013 and in contention for best album overall.
Last one lol: "Camp" was about a kid who "never got off the bus" as a child coming back from Camp. Because the internet script begins with "The Boy" coming off the bus. Crazy.
EASILY best album of 2013 for me, I loved this album so much I could literally talk about it all day, the production varied and was very different, almost all the lyrics told a story, the flows switched, and the singing was great so I didnt really bother me that he sang a lot
Not really getting the Yeezus comparisons. They are absolutely nothing alike. They're just both experimental. Saying this is what Yeezus could have been makes no sense. So Kanye should have written a script, told a story, take numerous influences from alternative r&b, abstract and industrial hip-hop, pop rap, etc.? They take influences from different places and sound totally different.
Think they're speaking conceptually, not musically. Kanye came out and said "Yeezus is unique, creative, only I could do this, etc. etc."... except then Yeezus was just a fucking Death Grips album. BTI, on the other hand, didn't straight up sound like Gambino just dropped verses over beats made by his influences.
I LIKE IT WHEN ME AND MYKE CAN STAN OVER THINGS TOGETHER, I REALLY DO. The transition from The Party to No Exit, the way Urn ends the depressive section of the album on such a relaxed note, the birds on Pink Toes, the outro of Worldstar, No Exit's transition in to Flight, ALLSHENEEDEDWASSUM, the interludes, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS ALBUM APSDB;KGFDGDFGDFG. it's pretty good, basically.
I didn't like any of Gambino's previous work, so I wasn't excited at all to listen to this one. But I think this video, as many DEHH reviews do, made me think otherwise, and I'm going to give it a serious listen. I appreciate you guys always having honest and detailed opinions on stuff, even if I don't agree. DEHH isn't necessarily where I go if I want to find music that I like, but it definitely keeps me from missing something I shouldn't. Thanks for the review.
The first 5 times i listened to it, I didnt like it. Now Its in my top 10 albums of the past 10 years. Its just so deep and depressing and it makes you think. Happy to say I was wrong at first
I totally agree with Beezy and his strategy guide analogy. I would suggest listening to the album for a few times for your own, then reading the script if it doesn't make sense. Also how come there's no comments?
+VTK XTOdraft songs i do... i can use a playstation headset and mix it enough to sound almost as good as my studio, and thats from someone who isnt perfect at mixing (not shitting on the studio, its ofc different quality but not far)
I didn't think it was really fluffy but I understand what you mean. This is probably my favorite album this whole year. Also, the strategy guide analogy isn't really... good...? I mean, the seeing the album for yourself part is good but smh at the strategy guide, strategy guides are to get you through a point or give you cheat codes and stuff
He means that the script tells you what's happening in the album instead of letting the listeners figure it out by themselves, much like strategy guides telling you what to do instead of letting the players explore and figure out a solution which takes away from the experience
hpk008 The script is a little more than that though. You can't possibly understand the entire narrative by just listening to the songs. I'm sure you can understand the basic content of the song in themselves, but you need the script to understand the narrative and what part of the story each song fits in. BS if you say you don't.
@Mykectown understood this album. It is indeed a masterpiece and like all great pieces of art, some people will not understand it and think it's crap. Its all left to interpretation
I loved this album after a few listens without the screenplay, but I still think you should read the screenplay simply because it's incredible how intricate it is like he's been doing things in real life that you see in the screenplay and like it you type in the twitter names from the story they're real, it's craziness
I completely agree with these guys, at the firt listen I struggled too to get the whole idea and concept of the album but after listening to it several times and while reading the screenplay every song with its various lyrical/instrumental work creates a magical atmosphere for me now and I simply love it, classic!
Goddamn!!! I seriously thought yall were goin to shit all over this record I don't know anyone that feels this this dude except me yall reviews are nice.
Album of the year. I was not expecting this This was fucking Genius I was expecting Typical gambino being corny But This is Fucking perfect Nothing wrong with this album at all Production and lyrics were Perfect I can't explain how I felt about this album it was Sooo good Honestly This is why I am a gambino fan And from the interviews He didnt Make it seem like it was gonna be like this but FUCK I love this project ALBUM OF THE YEAR
I agree with the last assessment of this review. The first time I listened to this, I was confused and I honestly expected something like Camp. Then after like the second or third time thru, I woke up. This thing is an experience.
I love you guys' reviews but you need to get a little more thorough and not speculate. Myke is trying to act like the script is not necessary to understand the entire album when it actually is necessary to understand the narrative. Of course you don't need the script to enjoy the music, but you need the script to have a comprehensive understanding of the album.
Everything mike was saying I was literally nodding my head to. Great review, and it's good to know good music analysts are still out there: subscribed.
I think loneliness is a pervasive theme in the album. I linked that to the title Because the Internet and I am seriously thinking that CG may be indirectly saying that the Internet contributes to a separation among people today especially adolescents(worldstarhiphop.com). This disconnect leads to loneliness so though the Internet greatly contributed to his music buzz it's(The Internet) still causing deterioration on a large scale and possibly within Donald. I can't help but reference the short film, Clapping for the wrong reasons. House full of people yet his loneliness was almost palpable.
Another great project from gambino. You guys should review Snoop Dogg and Dam Funk - 7 Days of Funk. It's a great project and the best shit Snoop has put out in years
you guys killed this review. This album deserves all the credit. I've been waiting for CG to finally find his ground. This lp is more of a feeling. An emotional experience. Everyone (critics mostly) picks on gambino yet other artists get recognition. Cmon. Nothing beats that closer. Adding elements of synthwave for an album about the new online age -- Perfect.
I want to tell you guys why this album is great. The number one thing on what makes a artist an artist is growth. Every artist in every form of has to have some form of growth to the beginning to the end. If there is no growth there is no way you can call what your doing art, it becomes a craft. “Because the Internet" displays that Childish is a true artist. Look back from his early projects such as pointdexter to culdesac to EP to camp to royalty. What made childish popular was that he was able to relate to the audience on a whole personal level. Listening to his music there is a strong connection. In many of his projects he was struggling to find out who he was as a artist in a industry that would shun him. But with BTI you can fully comprehend that Gambino has discovered who he has as a artist in this industry and the next thing he's doing is finding out who he is as a person. On this album he sounded more confident on the tracks and to him singing/rapping sounded more fluid. He doesnt need to be classified in hip hop or RnB, he has his own sound and he's finally understood that. This album was the beginning of thst journey and I'll expect he'll dig deeper in the future.
I remember watching Myke's interview with Dom's Sketch Cast and he was saying that artists think on different wavelengths (if you don't know, Myke said he went to art school in the interview). I think that is proved here because Myke figured out that Pink Toes is about drugs without reading the script. That just blew me away,.
Just listened to this with headphones on in a room with all the lights off. I've never heard anything like it before. It was a musical experience that I could never even begin to compare to another project. He did something 100% original and there is nobody else who could create something this unique.
That's what I did when I first listened to it. I was alone, in a room, completely dark. I thought Crawl, No Exit and a few others were amazing (the whole album is). When I first heard Flight of the Navigator I cried. Had me thinking about some deep shit from the past.. LOL.
Yeah ya know sometimes I wasn't completely following the story and sometimes the beats did more for me than the lyrics did. The music as a whole makes my mood change not just what he is saying.
Myke C-Town I felt like with the lights off I could feel the music more. I don't want you to think I turned them off for a darker reason. It was already about 1AM so I figured turning the light off and closing my eyes as I lay down and listen to the album would help me feel the music more instead of keeping my eyes open and looking at my surroundings. I'm completely fine. That's just something I do when I really want to focus or listen to the lyrics in more depth.
I am soooo glad you made the reference to because te Internet being what yeezus could have been Literally the best project ever in my eyes, gambinos growth is such an experience!
This is really the best album, I've heard all year. I didn't catch that pink toes thing till just now, but I loved every song. I can't stop listening to the album. Best project he's put out
It took me about 7 listens to completely understand this album the way that C-town does. But now I see what he saying. This album is incredible. Track 14 when it says "is it real cuz you're all online" he really saying "it is real cuz you're all alive". His wordplay is brilliant on this album. This is Gambino's "Kid A". Everyone isn't suppose to like it.
I never had a fond interest in rap/hip hop, but something about this album struck a huge chord with me. The powers and emotions contained in this project is something ethereal. It calls for attention without pulling an ego train. It's nothing like anything before, and it will stand the test of time as something once made, never recreated.
The strategy guide analogy would work if the script was essentially the lyrics. However, it is more of the dialog of the video game. Sure, you can enjoy the game by itself, but you can't fully enjoy it without both.
Omg yees that first guy i agree with what he said about even the songs that i didnt like so much, I knew that it sounded good and that it was good music, even if it wasnt my cuppa tea. Loved this album, cant put it down...might even PAY for it!
I might have to buy this album. Going to give it another spin, and purchase. I have to admit, I wasn't feeling a lot of the songs other than Sweatpants and 3005. A few minutes before listening again, I started getting in to Life, Crawl and The Worst Guys. To hear how deep this album is, I'm going to sit down and draw out what I want to take from this project.
the script is worth checking since it offers even more context to the album ("Urn" is a great example of a track in which it does), the script even begins at the exact moment he leaves the bus at the end of Camp so there actually exists a connection between the two somewhat. Just a suggestion, anyway great review and I totally agree with the points you made.
I love this Album. I cant remember the last time I liked every single song on an Album.
Ik! The library was probably my favorite
was jemel even a youtuber at this point ?
Best review I've ever heard on DEHH. Phenomenal album.
This album is a classic in my opinion. It's always on rotation.
Yeah I think it's classic too

Aidan Moore it is a classic it's pretty much wide accepted by now
Fuck yeah, listened to this yesterday. Good review.
I’m here from the future, it is a classic

anon03030605 exactly lol when B was talking myke rubbing his hands like birdman
that moment when kibge realised the sing was about coke😂 acted like he figured out the reason of life
I agree with myke c town. Love the album. Classic
This was a good album. I like that he tried to present the music within a unique context. We could use more artists trying to push products out in novel ways. I would have liked more features on this, though.
although i agree with you, the features could take away from the general theme of the album/story.
Denzel Borteyy Totally agree.
Royalty had plenty enough features. Enough features for his next three albums
Dom's Sketch Cast *cough* *cough* Kendrick did it first *cough*
I am so happy i found this channel! damn i love hip hop
Some of their debates get really heated, it's funny sometimes. Nice to find people passionate about hip hop.

I liked when Feefo said that this album was Gambino's Mona Lisa. I think that too.
This hasn't aged well.
It's Awaken My Love.
@@traplover6357 Its very much still Because the Internet
I was never a huge Gambino fan but this album probably was the best I've heard this year...better review than theneedledrop
How am I butt hurt because I said this review is better. These guys went into better depth
Jesse Cormier you're an inspiration to human beings everywhere. godspeed, etc
Damn right.
Jerry McMcray watch theneedledrop review for rick ross Mastermind. I lost respect for Anthony because of the way he did his album review.
Lee Everett lmao he didn't even review it wow

Can't believe someone didn't like 3005
it was good for a radio song
even though it's the catchiest song on the album, it took me a while to really get it. it's a beautiful song though
***** you joking m8
I fucking hate it
Chris B. Because everyone thinks it's a love song.
Life's the biggest troll but the joke is on us
Yeah, the joke's you showed up
You have to help me. Please help me
Lee Everett lol lee, you died in the forst season of the walking dead haha
Best track on the album.

FINALLY A NEW REVIEW! I hope you guys have more reviews planned!
I still cannot believe this album lost the Grammy to MMLP2
it's all cause eminem has his name going for him... mmlp2 was aweful
+ThaLedg MMLP2 I give 8.5/10 BTI i give 8.5/10 also. But Camp i give 9/10
+ThaLedg I agree with myke though it was a great album but then again BTI was so much better
I'm probably the biggest Eminem fan there is, or at least close, but BTI definitely deserved it.
what you know about infinite? or any of his raps from 88-95
nice, that's not a chick singing on No Exit though, I believe that's Miguel lol.
i thought he said "shit singing"
TheBabyeater3000 Why would he call a song fucking amazing and say there was shit singing on there ahaha. He said chick
FreshMicksMusic well kid cudi isnt that good of a singer but people still listen to him lol. he definitely said no exit tho
3 yrs later lol but thats definitely gambino. you could probably get/understand that with his most recent album
CKdiner it says Miguel in the album credits
Finally some reviewers give this album justice.
Zealots of Stockholm tho...

This is one of y’all best reviews
Have to agree with Feefo man, this album is an experience and it bumps in the whip. This album just feels good too me.
wow, Feefo and Myke dropped some bold statements here. I'm listening to this asap
Myke and Feefo have very strong opinions about everything.
It's aged very well almost a decade later, the beats are so rich and hypnotic, and his vocals and delivery are fucking awesome
you guys review things and like things I don't understand you like sometimes, but I am so glad I can always agree with you guys on Childish Gambino !!!

Alan McKinnon Except Yeezus didn't sound like Death Grips. The only similarity between Yeezus and Death Grips is that they are both loud, that's it.
Yeezus was a rip off of death grips man. I love kanye but we gotta call a spade a spade man. There were far more similarities than it being loud.
Ethan Flynn More like Yeezus is what BTI could have been. Yeezus > BTI

it was recorded in a home studio in a 40 dollar mic..

Great review as always.
Too fluffy? I get 3005, Shadows, Pink Toes, and maybe Oakland, but that's about it. No exit, Zealots of Stockholm, and Crawl are so aggressive/dark.
Oakland was pretty depressive at its heart, I think, so defo not fluffy, imo.
I love you guys' reviews but you need to get a little more thorough and not speculate. Myke is trying to act like the script is not necessary to understand the entire album when it actually is necessary to understand the narrative. The script adds to the understanding, but it does not prevent one from enjoying the album or understanding the story. It's really not that serious.
The script definitely enhances the experience.
Myke C-Town Did you ever get round to reading the script?
I'm going to check this album out now. I'm intrigued.
Wow I never seen Mike so excited for something and they way you explained it , I have to check this out now

This is by far one of the best albums of 2013
I'm really enjoying this album and though I've listened to it several times I"m still unpacking it. Great work by Mr. Glover
really appreciate your review guys. I like how you all have a slightly different stance.
mykectown... you're the man!
I loved the intro, and this was an excellent review! I knew Myke was going to go in though.
I though I was the only person hearing noise hop influences.
I would love to see you guys doing a video and explaining the story of the whole project.
Another great project from gambino. You guys should review Snoop Dogg and Dam Funk - 7 Days of Funk. It's a great project and the best shit Snoop has put out in years
needledrop should watch this.
you guys killed this review. This album deserves all the credit. I've been waiting for CG to finally find his ground. This lp is more of a feeling. An emotional experience. Everyone (critics mostly) picks on gambino yet other artists get recognition.
Cmon. Nothing beats that closer. Adding elements of synthwave for an album about the new online age -- Perfect.
you guys should do a special episode where you guys review and older album. which i suggest you guys review Madvillainy :)
I really wish he did something more with the Death By Numbers track, the production on it was incredible
Why all the lights off, though? You alright, man? Is this a cry for help?
Myke C-Town I felt like with the lights off I could feel the music more. I don't want you to think I turned them off for a darker reason. It was already about 1AM so I figured turning the light off and closing my eyes as I lay down and listen to the album would help me feel the music more instead of keeping my eyes open and looking at my surroundings. I'm completely fine. That's just something I do when I really want to focus or listen to the lyrics in more depth.
Myke C-Town Lol nah man not a cry for help. I just listen to albums before bed most of the time
Did anyone else notice how beezy got cut out of the video for a good ten minutes
I am soooo glad you made the reference to because te Internet being what yeezus could have been
Literally the best project ever in my eyes, gambinos growth is such an experience!
FUUUUUCK I gotta get this album. Learn some things, man. Sounds like an amazing project and I love Gambino.
This is really the best album, I've heard all year. I didn't catch that pink toes thing till just now, but I loved every song. I can't stop listening to the album. Best project he's put out
best album of the year hands down.
Everyone isn't suppose to like it.
gotf pls explain
Gambino's Pink Floyd: The Wall
This is my favorite album review on youtube now.
I never had a fond interest in rap/hip hop, but something about this album struck a huge chord with me. The powers and emotions contained in this project is something ethereal. It calls for attention without pulling an ego train. It's nothing like anything before, and it will stand the test of time as something once made, never recreated.
Are y'all gonna review the Busta/Q-Tip mixtape?
The strategy guide analogy would work if the script was essentially the lyrics. However, it is more of the dialog of the video game. Sure, you can enjoy the game by itself, but you can't fully enjoy it without both.
ofc myke was ride or die for this album. thats why he my favorite
WOLF was creative
preeeaaaachhhh
Beezy with that basic ass review LOL.
This was the album that made me a BINO fan and now seeing what he did with Awaken my love and Atlanta and everything. This dude is a gem
this is my favourite hip hop album of the year, probably favourite album period !!!!!!!!!!
