Dead End Hip Hop reviewed Frank Ocean! That's right. Four years ago, we didn't review Frank Ocean's album 'Channel Orange' which went on to set the world on fire. The success of that album led to many fans constantly waiting for his follow up. He didn't disappoint those that waited by releasing not one, but two albums. The first was a visual album 'Endless' which features Frank building a staircase. The second is 'Blond.' A lot can change in four years and that is evident with our review of Frank's new album. Watch our thoughts on the album and let us know what you think in the comment section.

The night was at it's darkest when Feefo heard a knock at his door. When he answered it, there was nothing but a small, tightly bound package. While he was confused about this, he could tell that the package was very cohesive. Inside the package lay a mixtape, which perplexed Feefo. He didn't know what to expect! Slowly he picked up the tape and brought it into his car, beads of sweat beginning to run down his face. As he steadily set it up, only one thing was running through his mind: "I hope this bumps in the whip..."

The end of Self Control is the most beautiful thing I've heard all year
iii know you gotta leave leave leave
Fucking right.
I get those goosebumps every time I hear that song. Absolutely angelic
Calm Travis Scott reference ???
Lets be honest, the whole song id one of the most beautiful things all year
Damn Ken's point about Facebook Story/Close to You just blew my mind.
I know you.
Yeah I was going to design stuff for y'all but life got in the way. Unless you're talking about watching my stuff in which case that's really dope.
Tabby Haha life does that a lot. But nah I actually saw a video of yours.

Nights aint gettin love? dam. im still bumping it daily
Trueee, that second part tho
+Alex Marquis third part fr me
Still bumping it daily
BDDarrin YNDB hope you doing well bruh
His best song
Think about it like this guy with the dreads: Nikes is the perfect song to start this off and I'm gonna tell you why: if he came in with his voice right at the beginning, it wouldn't feel right. He made us wait a little bit longer, and when his normal voice comes in, it is that much sweeter. Perfect execution.
Nikes went from my weakest song to one of by top 5
LET YOU GUYS PROPHECY
I like the whole concept of the pitch shifting, I just think the song itself is lame. Too basic compared to the rest of the album.
don't y'all be Carmelo
lizzy rosario yeah I don’t even agree anymore, damn.
Frank actually got Andre 3000 to RAP on his album unlike another person

Annnnnnd not one comment about Nights... Lord help these souls.

I think they were on the theme of duality waaaay before most people which is way more important than a beat switch
Frank Ocean's greatest strength is his songwriting. He very talented.
Greatest of this generation.
@@sbrooks904 Most of these songs are covers

Beyonce sounding like an angel on pink and white.
yeah beyonce's vocals are heavenly pink+white is beautiful
This man said he didn't like Nights. Respect your opinion, but Nights is my personal favorite.
He mispronounced Nikes lol
+Jonatan Timson Nikes is hard
***** hard to listen to, maybe
Nikes woulda been better without the autotune
Alejandro Serrano its not autotune, it's just pitch shifting.
Shouts out to Ken his perspective was really interesting to hear
Beezy great jobs with the beats man. God damn. Drop an EP or something, I'm sure a lot of us would buy, I sure would
+beezy430 Cool man, I'll be first in line. thanks for responding

Self Control is my fav joint, Yung Lean tho
I was shocked when I saw him on the credits.
Word im stoked him and Frank worked together
Definitely agree
im pretty sure the guy who sung on that song is actually Austin Feinstein of Slow Hollows (twitter.com/HollowsBandLA/status/767158041602994176)
He also colabed with Tyler on the video version of "Perfect"
I know he ain't in the credits but there's a lot about this album we still don't know.
+js-uno No he played the guitar and sings the high pitched part on the song then on the 2nd hook yung lean sings with frank ocean so they are both on the song
This album deserves a place in a music museum
surprisinglyroomy Absolutely.
No doubt about it. Hopefully in due time this album will come back around in a big way, possibly years from now, and talked about next to To Pimp a Butterfly and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as album of the decade.

Max Brackney Me. I listen to it like everyday almost.
I play this album 24/7.
So you’re telling me y’all listen to BLONDE when your happy? The only song that that could be applied to is pink + white or maybe nights
Second half of Nights is perfect. The first half is pretty great, but the second half is some of the most personal and emotive songwriting I've ever heard on a Frank Ocean track. And as for the production, the way he layered his voice with the "every day shit" line to create different harmonies around the chord pattern still gives me chills every time I hear it
The beat transition in Nights is one of the dopest things iv ever heard
Nights beat changed made my ears jizz
In White Ferrari, Frank sings the melody and a couple lines from Here There and Everywhere from The Beatles...its absolutely beautiful.
Nikes definitely not for everyone but I think its live af. Whole album incredible
I agree with Kinge on hype around this album. When this came out, I had a hard time believing people loved it the way they said they did. Its a phenomenal album but its far from an easy listen.
Yea that shit had me bugging. Someone was lying somewhere! hahahha
Pink + White is my shit the Beyoncé harmonies and that flow was just crazy bravo frank solid 9/10 for me and contender for album of the year.
Myke always hating albums till seconds before the video is made, then he loves them
I'm still laughing at that fucked up comment on the Isaiah Rashad review 😂😂.
+AsSmallAsAGiant LMAO if you know, you know. Had to be there in the first few hours of the video.

what was it

lmfao
I really want Endless in album format though
Derf Gerps its out there now
The Beatles influence is in "White Ferrari", the hook sounds very reminiscent of the hook in "Here, There, Everyehere"
that harmonizing between frank and beyonce on pink + white is what heaven must sound like
Frank is a lyrical genius
Not if you've heard actual lyrical geniuses?
@@gasparm.2711 He is man write beautiful deep poetry
@@gasparm.2711 I would like to hear those lyrical geniuses that would make me hate Frank. Because, I listen to Father John Misty, Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and lot of others, while Frank isn't the best songwriter ever, I'd still very much say he is a lyrical genius.
Does Myke like anything on first listen? Lol
Man, he's just saying he's objective and a deep album sometimes takes multiple listens.
Nah I understand what Myke means. The amount of times I've flip flopped on an album on second listen is crazy. I thought Earls last album was trash on first listen, now I think it's one of the best albums I've ever heard in my life.
+dohertyz I get why his opinions change, it just seems to happen a lot on DEHH. I'm not dissing him or anything. I'm glad he's honest about his opinions.
Death Grips
Artists take months and years creating projects so it makes sense you won't like it or understand it on the first listen considering how much effort they put into their craft.
Two days before this dropped, my girlfriend and I broke up. This was completely on point.
Nikes is already one of Frank's best songs to me, imagine missing an artist for 4 years and then the hype start to pick up, and then you get to Nikes, then first you're like shit he's back and you get that high pitch voice and you think what the fuck this is not fair, the his voice comes in with the beautiful beat and the video it's just so good!! Goosebumps all over
Shout out beezy on the production during the video. Good shit G.
How can you not like Channel Orange?!
So many features on that album that no one can find. Ocean made the musical equivalent to Where's Waldo
So.... No one was going to mention Kendricks beautiful harmonizing on Skyline To?? 😂😂😂😂
Nope
wait, aint he just shout words LMAOOOOOOO
Naw he didn't shout words hater lol
nah i fucks with kendrick, that shit was beautiful my nigga
Mike Craig right I thought it was frank on first couple of listens.
Love the beats Beezy.
I think the David Bowie influence came in the 'Nikes" music video. Its similar to David Bowie's music video for "Lazarus" because both videos explore the duality of their on stage and artist's persona, as in what their audience expects, compared to their life and how they feel about it.
Nah you're reading too much into it. Frank's a hipster wannabe philosopher..
Album of the year for me, sorry Kanyebut this is one for the ages. Thank you Frank Ocean!!!
Fun fact: At 3:30 of Nights, it is exactly 30 minutes of the hour long album. And the 3:30 part is when the last part of Nights come in. Thats how deep this album is
The Hip Hop Times Which changes the tone and mood of the album and transitions from Blond to Blonde.
Yo that just fucked my mind, this album has been out for two years and I’m still discovering deeper meanings to this album. Incredible
Damn I feel like they would've liked Nights. But thx for the review y'all we been waiting on it. This took me a couple listens to finally get "it" too.
I'm so glad y'all reviewed this album kens revelation about close to you was fascinating
clipping's new album is amazing. I think they took Myke's advise and made a concept album
It hasn't grown on me yet but I was thinking earlier that Myke will probably like it more than they're previous work. It seems right up his ally.
yeah I just wish there was more music on it

Love to see more r&b album reviews like this in the future. Probably one of my favorite one of the year.
Something I feel needs to be said is the album sounds influenced by Massive Attack or other acts of the british trip-hop era (Tricky and the likes), though perhaps that is accidental, because those artists first were trying to mix hip hop with uk indie (like shoegaze) indeed arcing back to the influence of Bowie and Eno. The early The Weeknd material also for me had this sound trajectory that linked back to trip-hop (Abel citing the same punk influences as Tricky would have in the 1990's). It just feel sometimes people are bypassing that era like it didn't have any impact (or american indie hip hop will be praised first as the influence, when the sounds seem more british-influenced). Of course we could argue all that trip-hop did was adding beats to Prince, since Prince mixed funk, rock, new ave, and Prince already had an appreciation for UK indie (he was a big fan of Cocteau Twins). But listening to Blonde, the best tracks for me reminded me of Massive Attack or Tricky the most, but more soulful, more with an american vibe. Perhaps the fact that many tracks are quasi empty affect the pace for me a little. I would have balanced it more. But then if you're listing folk as an influence, of course you eventually come to just guitar and singing.
The Beatles feature is the guitar in the second half of white ferrari #FreeBeezy
Yo mike, nikes makes perfect sense when you think of it like this. Given the fact that frank was with def jam before this, he had to release one album in order to on an independent label - Endless. Think about endless now, the name, building, the countless hours in the warehouse (as if he was a slave to the label). Then he made the staircase and built his way out of it to release Blonde on his own label. Nikes is about "These bitches want Nikes,They looking for a check" basically referring to def jam. I think that was almost like a celebratory song, then cue the second half of the nikes that seems to fit the narrative/context of the album.
I think Nikes was used to settle the hype so people didn't get crazy excited and to calm people down. I agree it's not the best.
Aidan Moore I agree. great take from that. it was like the slow play ice breaker of a conversation you use with someone you've had such a great relationship in the past but then suddenly fell off with. made so much sense i applaud the idea.
Love this album, along with these reviews. Also enjoying the more regular uploads. Keep it up guys!
Thanks for these consistent uploads! My favourite youtube channel! DEHH SQUAD
this album connected with me so much and left an imprint on me that i havent had since TPAB last year. cried like 3 times first time listening thru lmfao every song gives me goosebumps
The Beatles influence is in White Ferrari where he takes the voice inflections from Here, There, Everywhere from their classic 1966 album Revolver
so glad you guys reviewed this... This album was so beautiful, glad you guys saw that as well, and I appreciated the way Ken in particular unpacked this album. Gave me some new insights to look for next time I listen to Blonde
Thank you!! been waiting on this DEHH always has great reviews
Top 5 of the year, hands down.
The fact I don't have a physical of this albums just hurts, but yeah this shit beautiful. And like myke said once you really read the lyrics The whole entire album changes and feels different.
Why hasn't this channel like a million subs? Such good content
One of the contributors was Paul McCartney. In the song "White Ferrari", one of the musical phrases he sings is from the song "Here, There, and Everywhere" from the Beatles album "Revolver"
Nights is one of the best for me.
I felt like the nikes music video was a better representation of the song. The album version doesn't contain that key element of having that masculine deep voice singing with the feminine chipmunk voice. The music video explains much more and I would've love that version on the album instead. It just kicks off the theme of duality in the album.
This is still one of your best reviews in my opinion love you guys!
loving these instrumentals B!
“Don’t make us wait 4 years” rip lol
"aight imma make you wait 5 years instead" - Frank Ocean, probably
@@blueface93487 going on 8 :/
Honestly, I don't know how you couldn't love this album. Lol The first couple listen to any album needs to just be digested! Channel Orange and Blonde are 2 completely different album, but both great!! Theres only been like 2 days since the album has been out that i didn't listen to it.. It's fucking beautiful!
Two highly anticipated reviews in 24 hours. Thanks u guys very much. Shout out to ROD!
Finally. Couldn't wait to see what you guys thought of this fantastic album.
Myke, you are exactly my brain, even though I liked this straight away! We think in the same way!
This album is amazing aoty by far.. Every lyric was written to precision every interlude was put right where intended to belong and fit. Even if an instrumental wasn't your fave it can easily do the job for the song... Frank knows exactly when and how to use his voice to perfection. This album is great
I think Clarence Clarity is more so the Death Grips of R&B but Frank channeled some definite avant-garde bangers on this
review is real dope ...last backgroud beat crazy lol..had me mumbling rhymes haha big up!
you guys should do a classic review of Madvillany
It's kinda hard to watch any reviews of this album only because I can't listen to ANY criticism of any song...these songs mean so much to me, especially now. I went from hating it when it first came out to it being one of my top 5 personal albums
Same - I be arguing with the screen 😂
I love this album. It's so raw. Great review guys; I loved Beezy's beats in the videos btw - nice change. Nights was actually my favourite! I get goosebumps at the beat switch - the second part of that song really resonated with me and the production on this album is incredible. I love the aesthetic - so many songs have these watery and glitchy moments, they really engross me.
I love the way they talked about Siegfied It's probably one of my favorite songs and not that many reviewers really talked about it. This video was great.
I love the whole album. I liked the original version of Nikes. I hope he doesn't take 15 years till his next album. I feel like the only artist that has the right to wait a while till his next album is Kendrick Lamar😂.
That Nikes take aged like milk. The song definitely sets the tone and talks about the relationships creation that the album is based on. “We’re not in love, but I’ll make love to you. I’m not him, but I’ll mean something to you” is the reason this relationship has to be a secret
I think some of the greatest artists always take a nice bit of time between albums because their creative process is very complex....nice job Frank I'm a big fan thanks for the review guys
With every listen your able to get something new from this album, such an awesome project!
I heard Tyler The Creator produced pink + white.?
Pharrell and Tyler
I'm pretty sure Tyler confirmed that he didn't produce Pink+White
no tyler helped produce on 'skyline to'
He co-produced some of the joints, did some drum-programming and such. Tyler Okonma is credited on one song:
6. “Skyline To” (C. Breaux, T. Okonma, C. Chassol) Production: Frank Ocean, Malay Ho and Om'mas Keith Arrangement: Frank Ocean, Malay Ho and Christophe Chassol Guitars: Malay Ho Moog Solo: Christophe Chassol Keyboards: Christophe Chassol and James Blake Drum Programming: Tyler Okonma
back to back reviews and videos ok dehh i see yall tryna outdo needledrop
I love the start of nikes, it makes it more exiting when Frank finally comes in. Epic return to music.
Worth the wait, for the album and this video.
1. Self Control
2. Seigfried
3. Nights
4. Solo
5. Solo (Reprise)
Pink+White is better than all of those.
Y D Cap. That’s a hard cap.
Rey Parker as a song to just listen to yes it is, from a songwriting standpoint no, but sonically yes.
Y D It sounds nice but all of these songs are deeper on a songwriting level and I’d take Nights and Self Control sonically as well. Pink and White sounds pretty with the bassline and whatnot and I think you’re conflating that with actual song quality. It’s great don’t get me wrong but it’s mid tier compared to the best 5 on the album. The glistening beat switch on Nights, the heart wrenching closing melody and the percolating guitars on Self Control, the whirling organs of Solo, the GOAT tier verse of Solo (Reprise) just dwarf it and they’re why I come back to the album. I really listen to Futura Free and Ivy more than pink and white if I’m being honest (that reference though).
I liked Ivy at first and skipped nikes and self control a lot. That completely flipped over time. I love nikes now
I feel like another beatles influence is that wall of sound at the beginning of pretty sweet it sounds like the end of the verses in a day in the life
Nah it seems more influenced by The Velvet Underground than The Beatles
Really diggin the instrumental that was playing in the beginning of the vid
You guys should review Donald Glover's Atlanta series when it is finished
Review the new Clipping album please!
Hope you guys do a review on clipping.'s new project Splendor & Misery!
definitely agree with that last statement;
"what Death Grips is to Hip Hop right now, Frank Ocean is to Rnb"
blond is an incredible album, haven't stopped listening to it since it came out !!!
Album of the year.
This is the most beautiful album of the decade hands down. A true masterpiece.
Also how the fuck can someone like nostalgia ultra but not channel orange? Feefo is nuts.
I love listening to Myke's opinions
I actually rlly like Nikes. I had thought it was eh before. But it really had to grow on me. I still think it ends a little weak and it’s a weird to the record but I feel like it kinda adds character to it. For some reason Justice Der’s jazz guitar cover of it really made me appreciate the melodies of this song a lot more and now I rlly like it. Other than that I feel like Blonde is an album I can listen to a lot of the time cause some things I kinda relate to and I like that it makes me think while also eliciting emotional reactions too. All the sonic intricacies of it too are great. Really awesome album. Took me awhile to finish it but I’m glad I’ve had a lot of time to give some context to it and watch people talk about it and then really spend time with it.
Nights is the best song on this can't even argue.
Omg there's a new beat at the beginning
the album is good, its different, and that's how its suppose to be, cant expect to hear another channel orange on the sophomore album. I would've preferred more beat heavy material, but I dig the acoustic stripped down vibes sonically on the album. my fav tracks are ivy, pink & white, solo, seigfried, self control, nights, close to you and nikes. even the facebook story and the be yourself interludes were dope and meaningful to the album, some artists put a bunch of meaningless skits and interludes on their project but these were were thought provoking. I think frank took his time with not only this album but endless as well and gave the fans exactly what they been craving for the past four years. now he can take eight years off. this will be one of the best albums of the year.
just commenting my take rq cuz i mineaswell an im really passionate about this album --

(this is mostly in reponse to [man facing left]s review cuz his was the most in depth)
that shit you said about nikes broke my heart. nikes is fucking GREAT i think its fine how it and fucking dope as hell how it is like that super chill watery beat and those little ticks omG (1:49 mmf) and that verse at the end fucking poetry and BARS over those beautiful strings ugh such a good song.
completely agree on ivy and pink+white, i liked how u described the 'sparse shoogazey guitar and i especially got SUPER excited when you mentioned the breakdown with the super subtle guitar that's like my favorite part that song is so good too
agreed on solo, i liked how that main theme of the title was present through the whole song, and i thought both verses went so hard and i really liked the second one just ugh such a good song
you skipped skyline to but i think that songs fantastic so good and then self control is fucking BEAUTIFUL i love that song omg the fucking tracklist of the first half of blond is so crazy nikes, ivy, pink+white, solo, skyline to, self control, nights
i cannot BELIEVE what you said about nights i think nights is the absolute BEST possible climax to the album fucking HEAT all over the song and the beat is so gooodddd and then the second part is so niceeee and i don't know if anyone else noticed that the beat switch is almost the exact mid point of the whole album and it the second half of the album has a completely different vibe that beat switch seperated the whole album
but i agree with ya'll totally with the whole second half but you skipped pretty sweet which i really like and the finale futura free which i think is just a lil too long but really sweet.
