“ You dont know me but I’m your brother- “ one of the greatest lines ever. Mike grew up in Ferguson, MO. He worshipped Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
There are two Doobie Brothers. One with Michael and pre-Machael. They are both excellent but totally different. It just shows what great musicians these cats are to be able to switch styles so effortlessly.
Yes, I do know about Black churches. I'm Jewish but when I was a kid our neighbors invited us to their church. I absolutely loved it. It was like a Rock concert. lol
@@ScribeCash Scribe,You have AWESOME TASTE! Doobies ALWAYS had Bangers...This Song Is NO EXCEPTION! For your AWESOME taste, YOU got my Loyalty,And My 966th Sub!!!
Back in the 90s, I watched this Doobie Brothers retrospective on VH1 that finished with all 30 of the people who either were then or used to be members of this group, all playing together on "Listen to the Music" and it was fucking epic.
What I love about you SC is that you're young enough to be my granddaughter and yet you embrace the music that meant so much to me when I was your age. Thank you!
Please take the chance to hear the original band (pre-Michael McDonald) whose hits include: Listen to the Music Jesus is Just Alright Long Train Running China Grove Black Water They were a different-sounding band originally, but the original leader--Tom Johnston--was a genius.
Back in the mid late seventies, AM radio station KFRC in San Francisco, which was very popular ( in the days before FM took over ), had a night time spot they would do called ‘Takin’ it to the streets’ with this Doobie Brothers song playing in the background ( specifically the sax solo segment ). A priest from the local catholic archdiocese would host the thirty-second spot in which he spoke about various issues, such as getting help for drug addiction, homelessness, etc., offering words of inspiration, and information on how to get help. Anyway, every time I hear this song, I think of that radio spot.
There's a ton of connections between the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. From the players to the r&b influence to the production value. Much to explore.
Black Water is a MUST BY the group!! Hey girl! There was a black church 2 houses away from me. I would sit on the front steps of my house. It was literally Taking it to the Streets!!
You may find it interesting that The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan both used the same sax player on occasion and Michael McDonald sang backup for S.D.
Peace Love and hair grease my peoples. When we were all one and partied together. I miss those times. We all went out together and made it home safely, no fights all love.
Michael McDonald was by far a great find for the Doobie Brothers. They had some good music before he joined the band. Michael took them to a whole different universe.
U can hear MM singing background on many a Dan song,,,, he was w/ Fagan & Becker before the Doobies, just like Cornelius Bumpass..... Lotsa back & forth.... Skunk Baxter too !!!
True that, girl! The people living next to our church in the little town of Tawas City, Michigan, enjoyed listening to our congregation belt out the old gospel songs. Keep on, keeping on, my friend.
Michael McDonald (the guy singing lead) also did vocals for Steely Dan, another one of your favorite bands. He sounds great regardless of which band he’s singing with.
And probably another fifteen or twenty artists. Michael McDonald was everywhere and you can always tell it's him - because his voice is so distinctive.
I know you heard this a few years back but you need to hear them on a live video their phenomenal....Michael McDonald is fabulous and his voice is like no one else's....just a suggestion😊
Before there was punk, there was a three piece band out of Detroit named Death. Three brothers, three black guys, all pioneers! Their song Keep on Knockin' ... It doesn't get any better.

Michael McDonald as a solo artist collaborated with other solo artists and created some great songs. Check out and react to these duets songs with, Kenny Loggins & Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross & Michael McDonald, Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald, James Ingram & Michael McDonald, Steely Dan & Michael McDonald. One of the greatest songs - and an indictment of 1970s America. The economy was in terrible shape, unemployment was high, you still had the oil crisis - and there was a lot of pent up frustration by people who grew up in the 60s that saw a lot of the hope of the 60s fizzle out, Btw, the greatest song with a similar theme is Marvin Gaye's What's Going On
Before Michael McDonald joined the band, the Doobies introduced themselves with "Jesus is just all right with me". I'm an atheist, and I'm telling you, a GREAT song.
“ You dont know me but I’m your brother- “ one of the greatest lines ever. Mike grew up in Ferguson, MO. He worshipped Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
Who remembers when they were on the sitcom “What’s Happening? I know, I’m showing my age....but it was so awesome....
I remember that episode. I loved that show!
Of course! Rerun got caught with a tape recorder trying to get a bootleg copy of the Doobie's concert. LOL!

That BASS. Tiran Porter is fantastic.

I Keep Forgettin - Michael McDonald. IMO its his best vocal performance, and was probably his most successful solo song
Cant find my way home
I even laughed the same way you did a couple of octaves lower. Scary
My fave!

All their songs are fire, but this one is my fav. Especially relevant for the times we're living through.
" These times " aren't especially relevant to this song. Some of us have been at it forever.

I like your Star Trek uniform.
"I Keep Forgettin".......Michael McDonald funky solo HIT song!......(sampled in Warren G's song "Regulate")
This band is in my top 5 ever. So much range and most of their music is upbeat.
Michael McDonald sings lead on this one. Classic soulful voice.
You might also recognize his voice as the background vocal on Steely Dan - "Peg"
There's a ton of connections between the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. From the players to the r&b influence to the production value. Much to explore.

They had the Holy Ghost in them on this one.
You may find it interesting that The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan both used the same sax player on occasion and Michael McDonald sang backup for S.D.
The Doobies re recruited Skunk Baxter to replace Thom Johnston. Skunk recommended to the band. Both had been with Steely Dan.
Love her energy! Great seeing young people enjoying the music of my youth.

This tune has what the late great Miles Davis described as 'That Church Thing'. Meaning the Gospel Feeling.
All I can think about is Rerun dropping the cassette recorder
The harmonies on Minute by Minute are awesome!
