Michael and Patti Labelle "On my own" is a must watch. Two stunning voices and a duet. The two performers were in separate cities when they recorded their individual parts, which were then "married" during mixing. Phenomenal recording it will blow you away.
Both sound phenomenal
Yacht rock! That's funny, something I think Miami Vice would be a part of! His voice is unique, nobody else sings like him. This came put in the early 80s, I think judging by his hair style and clothing, and her hair style. Good tune, great artist.
Need to listen to the 1986 video. The sound quality and their voices are much stronger.
Absolutely!
I was just thinking the same thing.
He has written SOOOOOOO many songs for others! He is a phenomenal songwriter and musician. One of the most recognizable voices ever….😊
I love Michael McDonald, but he kinda sings like a Muppet.
Not to mention Toto backing him up. They played on a few tracks here and there.
So glad you doing listening vids on Michael MacDonald. Excellent work dude :)
@TahoeNevada excellent insight, I was just saying that yesterday, about multi platinum one of a kind next level vocalist Michael Mcdonald, to absolutely no one.
@@TahoeNevada Not at all. Dave Matthews and Eddie Vedder do for sure
Michael McDonald is one of THE BEST vocalist of that generation of music, The Doobie Bros were Fire and always on my "record player" and "CD" player. I think you'll be impressed with his voice and style of music. So great BP that you are checking out all of this older great music, because great music is timeless.
Listen to his Motown remake
He is in my top 2
Talent doesn't discriminate, people do.
all of the race crap has gotten old...just love each other and get along for God's sake!! Talent knows no color, race or creed
You are so right! Nice to hear logic!😊
History lesson…Go back in time to the 70’s and start with The Doobie Brothers. When lead singer Tom Johnson suffered health issues, Michael took over. You’ll love this music.
Also worth a look to listen to MM when he was in Steely Dan.
Michael did a lot of the backup vocals for many artists including Steely Dan (Peg) and Christopher Cross (Ride Like the Wind).
Yes! I totally forgot about him singing with Christopher Cross!! ride like the wind is a great song! In fact when this reactions over, I’m going to go listen to that
That's why Michael's unique voice is easy to hear in the songs where he did backups.
Doobie Brothers 'Black Water' is a completely different style. I love that song.
Michael McDonald wasn't with the Doobie Brothers yet when they recorded Black Water.
@@hackermusic3355 yes, I'm aware. Patrick Simmons wrote and sang Blackwater in 74. It was during Tom Johnston's lead singer/guitarist 7 yrs time at the beginning of the group. It's a completely different sound. Michael McDonald came on board when Tom's ulcer caused him to be admitted to the hospital. I just thought it was easier to give a quick recommendation instead of a long explanation.
@@karensilvera6694 Most of the time when somebody comments under a Michael McDonald song that they like Black Water they don't know.
Black Water was and Is Fire!!!!
My favorite
The younger generation is always covering our old school music. We had the best singers back in the day.
He was 30 years old. Born in 1952; this song was released in 1982.
Michael H. McDonald (born February 12, 1952) is an American singer, keyboardist and songwriter known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of Steely Dan (1973-1974), and the Doobie Brothers (1975-1982, 1987, 2019-present). McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute", and "Takin' It to the Streets." McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, and Kenny Loggins.
McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". During his career, McDonald has collaborated with a number of other artists, including James Ingram, David Cassidy, Van Halen, Patti LaBelle, Lee Ritenour, The Winans, Aretha Franklin, Toto,[2] Grizzly Bear,[3] Joni Mitchell, and Thundercat. He has also recorded for television and film soundtracks.
McDonald is the recipient of five Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers in 2020.
Thanks so much for all this info. Always love Michael.
This song was Michael McDonald's very first Top 10 hit as a solo artist after he left the Doobie Brothers. The song peaked at the #4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the fall of 1982. The female backup vocalist on this song is Michael McDonald's sister, Maureen McDonald. He and Christopher Cross are considered the kings of Yacht Rock. An absolute banger indeed!!!
Btw. The girl who sung the hook is Michael McDonalds little sister. FYI. Check out. “This is it” by Kenny Loggins ( more blue eyed soul) Michael McDonald is a feature in this song since they wrote it together. He’s written a lot of good songs with Loggins
Sorry, don't agree that Kenny's tune is Blue eyed soul, This Is It, nice tune but not that.
I love Kenny Loggins
The sample was used because Warren G met Michael before and they got on well. When he contacted him about using the sample he said let me listen to it and he loved it.
Waren G also sampled Bob James "Sign of the Times" on Regulate. If you have not done so yet, you need to check out how many hip hop songs sample Bob James.
Warren G was always respectful with his samples
Finally!!! Lol I don't even know how many times I've requested this in your comments!! After I had u check out Bruce Hornsby and the Range, this was next on my list of songs that were sampled by rappers!! This song dropped in 1982, and he was 30 years old in this video!
He was so "old" then. I remember this dropping
I had to Google it, I didn’t see your comment at first lol
Can’t wait for this one! I wonder if he’ll recognise which rapper sampled it in the 90s 😁
Michael was 30 when he dropped this. His sister sang the backup vocals. He was in the group Steely Dan and Dooby Brothers. I was in love with him, LOL ✌️❤️😎
@@susanbeckmolloy9536 ooooh!! He was in Steely Dan too?! That makes complete sense but I didn’t know until now! BP needs to check out Steely Dan too 🫶🏼
Michael McDonald with Patti Labelle on my own is a must hear @ Black Pegasus
Yes! Please do "On My Own" with Patti Labelle & Michael !
Yes!!
Michael is 73 years old now and the song was in 1982 so you were really close he was 30 years old, boy, those years flew by. It seems like yeaterday.
And he still tours!!!
This is pure R&B, blue-eyed soul....with a touch of yacht rock. lol!
Yes. This is NOT "Yacht Rock."
@@LibraALLWoman Yes, it IS Yacht rock. Lol at thinking it isn't. It's in the top 10 of every yacht rock chart. lol.
@eriklarson9137 this song perfectly shows that a song can fit in multiple genres if it exhibits features of those genres perfectly.
The thing is, once you hear "The Voice" you can never unhear it, you will hear it everywhere.
I don’t think Michael McDonald gets the credit he deserves. He has worked with so many artists. I agree with some of the other comments, react to On My Own with Patti Labelle is a must
Before everything, the drummer who plays on this tune, 19 yo Jeff Porcaro, just hired to play with Steely Dan, recommend his friend Mike Mcdonald to B&F of Steely Dan. The rest is history.
Jeff Porcaro just kills, he was my high school mate in Van Nuys, CA with his brothers, Luke, Paich-Toto!
i got to see michael mcdonald open for steely dan back in 2006, and he came back out to sing lead on a couple tracks with the dan. i know do it again was one of the songs he sang lead, but don't ask me to remember the rest because i met a group of dudes that kept passing me joints and blunts all night long. it was the highest i've ever been in my life.
Awesome story.
Jeff was so fucking good that during the recording of this song, one of his sticks broke. Instead of redoing a take, he kept the 16ths on the high hat going... with his foot pedal and once he grabbed another stick just continued playing flawlessly without missing a beat. Might sound easy doing that, but trust me, just try and stomp your feet to this song, but instead of doing it as 1,2,3,4, do it mirroring the high hat of the drums (1,2,3,4, 2,2,3,4 ,3,2,3,4, 4,2,3,4) at the speed the song is in, and you'll realize just how good Jeff Porcaro was. The backbone of TOTO and 80s pop.
Best singer ever Michael McDonald and best group The Doobie Brothers 👍🏼
You'll definitely recognize his voice on the Doobie's "What A Fool Believes". also, MM's vocals were on a lot of records back in the day.
Especially the live version!
I had such a crush on Michael MacDonald in the 1980s. He was such a fine looking man! And his voice, ahhh, so smooth!!!
His voice is so iconic. Nobody else in the world does sound like him, not even close.
You gotta react to The Doobie Bros (with Michael MacDonald singing lead), “Taking it to the Streets”. It’s a really unifying protest song. Really fucking cool.
That the one I mentioned! ❤
He's still performing in his seventies and sounds just as good.
This song was released in 1982. The rap song, "Regulate," came out in 1994. Michael McDonald was called a Blue Eyed Soul Singer in his heyday. One of the most recognizable voices in the music industry.
We never called this Yacht Rock. That is ridiculous. He is Blue-eyed Soul
💯🎯
Blue eyed soul, never heard yacht Rock in my life, this isn't even rock it's soul. He was Motown
Probably something millennials came up with
Exactly. Blue eye soul. He also did a lot with Steely Dan
Michael was born in 1952 and this song came out in 1982- he was 30 yrs old. He is still performing and just toured with the Doobie Brothers and he and the band sound fantastic still. Icon.
Grew up with this...... Micheal McDonald's voice is undeniable, hear it once, never miss it again
Michael McDonald has been a backup singer for so many groups and singers. His voice is so distinctive you recognize him immediately. He is one of favorite singers going all the way back to my college days.
Since you listened to this, you have to watch Michael Mcdonald with the iconic Patty Labelle "On My Own". You will trip big time. 😊
Holy shit, the way you guys are kind of groovin' together by instinct is what happens at my parties every time I tell Alexa to play "Yacht Rock Radio" in the background. Life is way funnier than most people make it. You two seriously crack me up.
40Year old rapper intimidated by a 70's white soul singer
That voice! Nobody else sings like him.
Definitely react to Bobby Caldwell!!!
Guys, there’s a huge difference between sampling and doing a cover. At least when you’re doing a cover you’re actually playing your own instruments and singing your own vocals. I guess we had generations of people who had musical talent. When we stopped teaching real music, music theory, in schools we lost the ability for people to create their own music. Now we have “sampling”.
Well said!!!
Michael McDonald is 72 years old now. At the time of this release, he was 31. One of the BEST voices in music. He’s one of a kind.
Michael McDonald is 72 years old now. This is an old video. He was the voice of the Doobie Brothers of the 1970's
He was 30 when this came out in 1982. He started going gray headed on his late teens/early 20s. He's 72 now and still performing to this day. Check out his work with The Doobie Brothers:
It Keeps You Runnin
What A Fool Believes
Minute By Minute
Taking It To The Streets
Check out his background vocals on Kenny Loggins' This Is It, Christopher Cross' Ride Like The Wind.
Check out his duets with Aretha Franklin on Ever Changing Times, Patti LaBelle on On My Own, and lastly with David Pack(Ambrosia), and James Ingram on I Just Can't Let Go!
He sings and you know its him…when he sang with the Doobie Brothers…the whole stadium would instantly go quiet just to listen to Michael. Incredible voice!
Seriously you guys should check out Steely Dan “ kid Charlemagne” you will know that sample as well. It’s an absolute fact that Steely Dan was sampled more than any other artist, rap, R&B, and hip-hop.
Totally agree! Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald on my own!!!!❤
Taking it to the Streets, is a banger.
They may play this on a yacht but us older people call this “blue-eyed soul.” Love! ❣️❣️❣️
There was a point where it seemed every top 10 record had him either singing lead or singing background vocals.
Bruh, MM is blue-eyed soul personified.
Also backup singer for Steely Dan.
Steely Dan, another seventies rabbit hole of amazing music.
That is just one Michael McDonald the voice :)
Saw him the last time he played live with the Doobies. Still have a mad crush from college on him. His voice melts me
Thanks!
Love Michael McDonald always loved him with the Doobie Brothers! Takin it to the Streets!❤
We called it groove rock when it came out
Some of us Scots or Irish go from shades of auburn to beautiful gray fairly early😊
You should also know that Michael McDonald did a feature song with Toto where he sings some backup vocals. The song is "I'll Be Over You."
He was friends with Jeff Porcaro since 1973.
Music just keeps going. Everything comes from something else. ❤
I've never been on a yacht, never wore a sweater over my shoulders, and never owned a pair of boat shoes, but this really does it for me. We've all been there, right? But, MAN, what an unmistakable voice!
I forget how young you guys are. These artists have such amazing talent. . Keep gettinI to those 70’s/80’s
This is definitely one of my favorite songs. It’s actually his sister singing with him. Please react to Bobby Caldwell What you Won’t do for Love!
Steve Lukather - guitar (ToTo's guitarist)
Greg Phillinganes - clavinet (Now ToTo's keybordist)
Louis Johnson - bass guitar (from the Brothers Johnson and bassist on Michael Jackson's Off the wall album)
Jeff Porcaro - drums (ToTo's drummer )
Maureen McDonald - backing vocals (his sister)
Here are the credits for this song 🤯
I close my eyes to this song and see a Ray Carles blasting this out...Macdonald is the MacDaddy of SMOOTH....
LOVE Michael McDonald's UNIQUE VOCALS!! You can hear him on ANY TRACK he's involved in....whether he's LEAD or BACKUP!! You CANNOT mistake him for ANYONE else... SO GOOD!!! HUGS, YA'LL!!!
Michael with Doobie Brothers “What a Fool Believes” and his duet with Patti LaBelle “On My Own”🔥🔥🔥
Jeez, again. Dude, I wasn't a cougar when this came out. I was 30, and he was the bomb!
You need to react to his "It Keeps You Running" the live version with the Doobie Brothers. My absolute all time favorite. I could just drink this man's voice !!!
Michael McDonald was the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers starting in the mid 70's. He took over when the then lead singer got sick. Michael completely changed their sound to blue-eyed soul. It's a bit of a controversy with some fans not liking the sound Michael brought & others liking it better. You have to check out some live videos. Michael is great on the keys & his voice is iconic! 'The Doobie Brothers - Takin' it to the Streets (1977), "Minute by Minute" & "What a Fool Believes"
I remember watching him sing live, and noticed that his facial expression never changes to show any emotion, yet his voice sure did!
The Doobie Brother's and Michael McDonald are brilliant artists! This specific song is blue-eyed soul, but he does have a few songs that would be conaidered "Yacht Rock" maybe. The Doobies are classic rock, pop, soft rock, and blue-eyed soul .
Michael's voice is so raspy, sexy, soulful, and smooooth.
Definitely react to Bobby Caldwell- "What You Won't Do For Love". He's another fantastic blue-eyed soul artist. Try some Michael Bolton or Hall & Oates too for that same genre.
Here for this one love this one
I would love to see your Dad on here! I'm glad I always stick around to find out all of the details!
Michael has is all that voice and incredibly good looking!
Michaels sister did the back singing. Funny thing when I started digging Michael I was 15 and he already had grey streaks. Now I'm 60 I have very fading hair. Meanwhile Michael has still amazing hair (and voice)
I saw Michael in concert about 5 years ago. He is as good as ever! I've always loved his unique voice!
Michael McDonald is everything
I was 12 when this came out and I never saw the video for it. I don't know that my young heart could've handled that voice and those eyes together 😍 And I agree that his voice is so hard to describe. It's so special!
Mike McDonald’s sister sang the female part. This guy is so talented! Enjoy! ✌🏻🇨🇦✌🏻
You’ll hear that unmistakable voice singing background vocals for all sorts of artists.
Michael McDonald was backup vocal in some Steely Dan before he was a lead singer in the Doobie Brothers after the original lead had to step back for a while. He went solo after that with his "blue-eyed soul". The Doobie Brothers just did a 50th Anniversary tour. I saw them last summer, 3rd row. The venue was packed full. You couldn't fit another person. McDonald was there with the band. They were so solid, sounded like off the vinyl! If McDonald hadn't toured with them, I probably wouldn't have gone (Even though seeing them, I would've loved it any way). Top notch!
Now that you've heard his voice, wait until you see and hear all of the songs hes a part of. Patti LaBelle, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Toto, Steely Dan, etc. Also, in this song, the female backup singer, is his sister. And he was 30 when this song was released. He was born in 1952, and this song was released in 1982.
Love him! Have seen him solo concert. A great talent!
Michael is from Ferguson Missouri . He played in many St, Louis area local bands in the mid 60;s. Even played at dances at my High School.
Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle “On My Own “ is 🔥🔥🔥
I still play it it’s so good
Have you heard Leon Russell? There’s no one to equal him. He’s a singer/ songwriter. He has so many great songs.
Lady Blue, Tightrope, I’m Singing this Song for You
and many more.
And his Hank Wilson album of all Hank Williams songs😅
I've never heard the term "yacht rock" before! To me, this takes me back to my pre-teen/early teen years. There was a certain sound in the late 70s to early '80s that is distinctive, and this song is a part of it. Thanks for the warm fuzzies, BP.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was a guitarist for Steely Dan and left to join the Doobie Brothers. When one of their singers Tom Johnston had health issues and needed to take a leave of absence, Jeff suggested Michael McDonald, also from Steely Dan.
The difference between sampling and playing a cover is that the sample is using the magic created by the original artist. Playing the cover is using your own skills to recreate the same magic. Same as painting a picture with brushes and canvas based on a great painting, as opposed to simply printing a photo of the original painting onto canvas. It’s completely different.
First time dude here. Y’all gotta keep it up! Was there when the Cartier boys broke open, and y’all deserve the same respect. 🙏
Michael's sister is singing backup vocals. Check out Christopher Cross, too 😍
Bobby Caldwell “Do for Love” is fire! 🔥
His 2 sister's sang backup on this-you can see it on a Soul Train clip
My second favorite Mcdonald tune after his famous hit with the doobies....what a fool believes.....love the simple drum track by the late jeff porcoro on this song....just hypnotic, simple bass piano...lets mikes voice do the work....then the musicians give it a little gas at the end. Nice simple tune, well orchestrated. Love it.
MM is a magnificent singer songwriter, one of the very best
Michael McDonald not only sang/played with the Doobie Brothers (changing their whole sound), he has worked with so many other artists. He's one of the best-known studio musicians of his generation.
I’m so glad you guys did this one. I love your reactions to it.
I looked it up, he was 30 when he made this music video 😎
A lot of people prefer pre-McDonald Doobie Brothers. I'm one of them, but I still appreciate his work with them. Dude has a golden voice for sure. Check out Peg by Steely Dan for some awesome Michael McDonald harmony. And anything else by Steely Dan while you're at it.
came out in 82. He would have been 29/30. Born in 52.
Take it to heart from him is fantastic
I can not believe you havent heard him. His voice so unique . Aint no mountain hi enuf is amazing
The back up singers are his sisters. I love Michael McDonald’s voice and his time with The Doobie Brothers. He sings back up on “Ambrosia’s” & with Lead singer David Pack.
