This song was released in 1982. The rap song, "Regulate," came out in 1994. Michael McDonald was called a Blue Eyed Soul Singer in his heyday. One of the most recognizable voices in the music industry.
@@hackermusic3355 yes, I'm aware. Patrick Simmons wrote and sang Blackwater in 74. It was during Tom Johnston's lead singer/guitarist 7 yrs time at the beginning of the group. I just thought it was easier to give a quick recommendation instead of a long explanation.

History lesson…Go back in time to the 70’s and start with The Doobie Brothers. When lead singer Tom Johnson suffered health issues, Michael took over. You’ll love this music.
He was 30 years old. Born in 1952; this song was released in 1982. Michael H. McDonald (born February 12, 1952) is an American singer, keyboardist and songwriter known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of Steely Dan (1973-1974), and the Doobie Brothers (1975-1982, 1987, 2019-present). McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute", and "Takin' It to the Streets." McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, and Kenny Loggins. McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". During his career, McDonald has collaborated with a number of other artists, including James Ingram, David Cassidy, Van Halen, Patti LaBelle, Lee Ritenour, The Winans, Aretha Franklin, Toto,[2] Grizzly Bear,[3] Joni Mitchell, and Thundercat. McDonald is the recipient of five Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers in 2020.
The sample was used because Warren G met Michael before and they got on well. When he contacted him about using the sample he said let me listen to it and he loved it.
Waren G also sampled Bob James "Sign of the Times" on Regulate. If you have not done so yet, you need to check out how many hip hop songs sample Bob James.

The female backup vocalist on this song is Michael McDonald's sister, Maureen McDonald. He and Christopher Cross are considered the kings of Yacht Rock. An absolute banger indeed!!!
You gotta react to The Doobie Bros (with Michael MacDonald singing lead), “Taking it to the Streets”. It’s a really unifying protest song. Really fucking cool.

Michael McDonald has been a backup singer for so many groups and singers. His voice is so distinctive you recognize him immediately. He is one of favorite singers going all the way back to my college days.
Guys, there’s a huge difference between sampling and doing a cover. At least when you’re doing a cover you’re actually playing your own instruments and singing your own vocals. I guess we had generations of people who had musical talent. When we stopped teaching real music, music theory, in schools we lost the ability for people to create their own music. Now we have “sampling”.

The Doobie Brother's and Michael McDonald are brilliant artists! This specific song is blue-eyed soul, but he does have a few songs that would be conaidered "Yacht Rock" maybe. The Doobies are classic rock, pop, soft rock, and blue-eyed soul . Michael's voice is so raspy, sexy, soulful, and smooooth. Definitely react to Bobby Caldwell- "What You Won't Do For Love". LOVE Michael McDonald's UNIQUE VOCALS!! You can hear him on ANY TRACK he's involved in....whether he's LEAD or BACKUP!! You CANNOT mistake him for ANYONE else... SO GOOD!!! HUGS, YA'LL!!!
I've never been on a yacht, never wore a sweater over my shoulders, and never owned a pair of boat shoes, but this really does it for me. We've all been there, right? But, MAN, what an unmistakable voice!
The difference between sampling and playing a cover is that the sample is using the magic created by the original artist. Playing the cover is using your own skills to recreate the same magic. Same as painting a picture with brushes and canvas based on a great painting, as opposed to simply printing a photo of the original painting onto canvas. It’s completely different.
I loved this song way before Warren G! I feel sampling is a compliment to the original! It’s a form of appreciation and keeping the music alive! In the video, the woman at the end is a different woman than in the beginning! I love Michael McDonald’s voice! He was great in the Doobie Brothers!❤❤

My second favorite Mcdonald tune after his famous hit with the doobies....what a fool believes.....love the simple drum track by the late jeff porcoro on this song....just hypnotic, simple bass piano...lets mikes voice do the work....then the musicians give it a little gas at the end.
