Fun Fact: MtG is the reason Yu-Gi-Oh TCG had to change their terminology and an entire booster set name. YGO cards can basically be divided into 3 groups: Monsters, Traps, and what were originally called Magic Cards. They were later changed to Spell Cards. The booster set was originally called Magic Ruler, but reprints since then have been named Spell Ruler.
Never much cared for MTG, but in the '90s I was a huge fan of White Wolf's "Rage" game -- in which werewolves fought because that's what werewolves do. Dang I loved that game.
Commenting not because I have anything useful to say, but so that the algorithm puts this out to more people, because it's clever and interesting and I want to see more despite not being an MTG player.
The older Magic the Gathering novels are actually pretty good reads and great sources of inspiration for homebrewing RPG settings. Odyssey block, the first Ravnica block, Kamigawa block, and the three books about the Champion of Nicol Bolas realizing his dragon overlord is evil and then rising up to slay the dragon are all full of great examples of black or mainly black mana heroes fighting against unusually villainous white mana characters.
Oh wow, I had no idea. I would love to see a series of videos on world of darkness from history to lore. Assuming it actually interests you and doesnt hurt your subs count
A long time ago when I was in middle school and Magic with 1st taking off, we still were using antiup cards then. We would play during lunch and at recess. They thought we were gambling, suspended a bunch of us that were managing the tournaments, and band the card game from the school grounds. Smh
I wasn’t at GenCon for the debut. However, I did attend WorldCon 1993 in San Francisco that September and picked up two Beta decks there. I was hooked.
Oh Nice. I've always been curious about the stories of older sets and the sets that came out after I quit the game. I look forward to seeing things from the beginning
So, roughly 15 minutes of Kevin Siembieda threatening to sue pretty much everyone? (And I say this as somebody who still has half a dozen _Heroes_ _Unlimited_ and _Robotech_ RPG books 30+ years later.)
Almost screamd in glee at the Voltaire reference. Totally didn't expect one of his songs to ever be referenced in something not dealing with The Grim Adventures.
Fun fact: There is a Magic creature called Soulless One you could've used for, well, The Soulless One. Anyway, excellent video! I'm very excited for more in depth in- and out-of-game Magic lore videos! I was even about to Um Actually you until you kept talking and I realized I was fucking wrong!
oh dear god, thank you for davvy. There are no good quick rundowns of block history. Starting in the middle is hard, who the fuck would assume that Sorin is a good guy and Avacyn was only saving the powerful
I started playing just as Unlimited came out. I've held Black Lotuses. I've owned a couple original double lands and even a Mox (Pearl or Ruby if I recall). Seems like so long ago.
I wish you luck on covering the vast backlog lore and stories of MtG. Just sad they stopped printing books you could buy that told lore and stories about the characters in a certain set/block. Actually still have my books from some of the older sets.
You talk about dungeon dice being released as competition for magic. But there was already a dnd ccg. It's actually in this video. When you show that old flier, there's an add on there next to the dnd for another game called spellfire. Spellfire is a dungeons and dragons ccg, featuring many of the named characters from their novels
The shift from almost-random expansions to blocks was a little longer than it sounds in the video. And also the outcry at the time. Also, "tap Liliana" 🤣
That this video contains no mention of the spin-off version of the game that also got an anime based around it (Duel Masters) makes me sad. No joke, in the manga for the series - because of course there was a manga - the main characters started off playing MtG, and it eventually evolved into Duel Masters. That's why it contains so much of the same rule set, but toned down to make it a bit less rules dense. Any card could be mana. Instead of life you had shields - which were face down cards from your deck that would be added to your hand when destroyed - and you could only survive a single attack once those were gone. And my personal favorite adjustment - none of that "must decide all your attacking monsters at the same time" nonsense. You could actually choose which to attack with and in what order, and god I love it so much more.
Pretty sure the Soulless One is responsible for the current push for multiple products per year (rather than the 4-5 that's been the norm for the past decade).
I like to play magic the gathering, but honestly I wish they would slow down on the amount of cards they are making. I feel like I barely get any time to play with the new cards before the new set comes outhat comes out and the power structure has changed completely.
Depends on what format you're playing; If it's Standard, then it's generally only one set every three months (This year is an exception, with Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow being back-to-back, but beyond that, it's every three months), which is plenty of time to mess around with new cards, I would say; If it's Commander, then I kinda agree, yeah, but otherwise, stuff doesn't change up THAT often, especially compared to any other TCGs like Yugioh.
Started playing very early on in the games life but stopped playing years ago with, ironically, the Exodus expansion. Mostly because I noticed the person that spent the most money on the game was usually the winner. Didn't help that I played several other CCGs that I liked the theme or mechanics more than MTG. Every once in a while I think about picking up some cards and getting back into it and remember how annoying it was to spend hundreds of dollars on booster packs and getting very few of the cards that I wanted. Not to mention I can buy a complete game for less than many rares go for. I respect the game a lot for what it did but it's not for me.
so you're telling me, that you are going to talk about the lore of MTG, with the biggest possibilities of videos being planes, Planeswalkers and possibly the various races? And all I have to do is wait? welp better call the minions up, is going to be a long cycle.
All right for this I'll just say this simply you know how you can be a Pokemon trainer or whatnot or somebody's made a module so you can capture monsters like a Pokemon trainer I want that except I have a planeswalker and I'm using my library like in the magic the gathering game summoning monsters and pulling forth arcane knowledge and artifacts in dungeons & dragons yeah that be overpowered but planeswalkers are overpowered it'd be fun as hell
Even though I like MTG,I think there is two card games that is superior to it it: Android Netrunner (obvs) and Duel Masters. Please Davvy do a video on Netrunner :)
I mean if the problem with going in depth on the history of WotC was that everything was too competent and boring after someone bought them you could always do a history of world of darkness.
Reporter: Liliana or Nissa?
Henry Cavill: Vraska
Vraska is best girl.
Ixalan vraska is best character.
Change my mind.
I concur Vraska best girl
Man I’ve never had a pre-determined chub before in my life but the prospect of davvy doing mtg lore videos just did it.
whats a chub

Why are you watching Davvy in the middle of the road?

As a magic fan this video was surprisingly refreshing in positivity as a lot of the fandom isn’t the happiest right now.
Never much cared for MTG, but in the '90s I was a huge fan of White Wolf's "Rage" game -- in which werewolves fought because that's what werewolves do. Dang I loved that game.
Chappy, could you do episodes diving in depth into each magic color mana? I'd love to hear what you think of each one.
YEEESSSSSSS
to summarize
Red: Aggro
Blue: Control
White: Stall
Green: Ramp
Black: Yugioh
A history of Steve Jackson games could be great, especially with that juicy FBI raid story right there in the middle.
Commenting not because I have anything useful to say, but so that the algorithm puts this out to more people, because it's clever and interesting and I want to see more despite not being an MTG player.

The Invasion Cycle books are highlights of my young reading life

"Yes bard, tell me the tales."

Davvy doing Magic lore? Oh, this will be _very_ fun.

With my gorging Midnight Hunt content, this must be fate
Glad to hear you know the Voltaire song. :D :D :D
Also, thanks for the new (nerdy) history. Can't wait for the next one!
Davvy, I am loving this new series of yours, thank you very much and keep up the good work

Hyped for inevitable MtG lore videos :D

At least Rifts.

Another great video dude I'm enjoying these history videos 👍
Seeing Winota toward the end filled me with rage xD
YESSS I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE MTG LORE VIDS!!
Yugioh is my card game but I still have alot of respect for MtG. It's good to know it's always had color coded strategy.

There is a strange lack of MTG lore content on youtube. Looking forward to your videos!

I hope Davvy does lore vids on Innistrad, Amonkhet, Ravnica, Tarkir and Ixalan.... Those are my favourite planes in MTG
Should I play MtG again?
My mind says yes. My wallet asks me If I finally went of the deep end.
Yes. Play Arena for free or just proxy
Proxy ftw

Play something like modern, you can build a decent budget deck for like 30$ and new expansions don’t change stuff that much
@@jadeamulet2339 Got any good sources for those kinds of budget decks, actually? I'm interested in trying out Modern more myself!
Ah yes, the six color double alternate timeline magic.
Suggestion, I would love to see a similar history of White Wolf games.
