It was a pleasure to work with The Professor to put this together. I am already working on ideas for more videos. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to learn about Magic art.
Josh Krause I would like to know more about the process of submitting art to Wizards for cards and how I could get involved with creating art for Magic.
It should also be noted that contacting the artist directly is a great way to go. I bought a piece from Tempest last year because the artist simply had it all these years.
Brilliant video. The art in Magic played a big role in me deciding to try out the game. I really enjoyed an educated exploration of the unique art collecting world of Magic
Well it is the end of the month, so will we soon get an update about how your new job has been going. Also I love that you did a video about the art of magic. Last night I was talking to a woman and told her I was going to play Magic today. And she asked why and the first thought that came to mind was your argument on why people should play Magic. I explained to her about how it was as good as chess in strategy and everything you talked about in your previous video about it. Just thought I would thank you for it.
Thank you for a very much needed video. I think that the magic art plays such an important role for the overall experience of game that if weren't for it, I wouldn't play it altogether.
Very nice video. Me and a friend collect vintage cards. Mostly anything (quantity before quality) and I can spend hours looking at the cards in the binders. The early sets are some of my favorite, but I love weatherlight to destiny too.
And once again, you came up with another surprising video I had never thought of. I´m so proud of being one of your 1000+ patrons, I feel like we are your army of spartans fighting for the best product quality and enjoyment. You give us so much for the mere price of 1.5 booster. Thank you for your documented and enthusiastic work professor.
Prof, I know you're not going to believe me when I say this, but soon you're gonna be huge. You will be the only youtuber players suggest to new players. Your videos will be used at LGSs around the country to teach players of all ages. And you will inspire a whole new generation of youtube creators to follow in your footsteps. Thank you prof
Raymond Swanland is my favorite artist. I can usually tell his art before I even look at the name of the artist on the card. Every time I see his artwork on a new card I get filled with a sense of admiration for his style. He's done cards like Thraximunder, Vengvine, Vioshino Slaughtermaster, Dragonmaster Outcast, and many more.
I really like the older arts. Since Theros they all look so mega photoshopped. Look at Origin spoilers, some are so digital that I don't even like them anymore. That Sphinx guys head looks like it's badly put onto the body with paint.
Hymn to Tourach by Scott Kirschner was always one of my favorite mtg artworks. Reiver Demon, Grinning Demon, Avatar of Woe and Scion of Darkness are also amazing. Black rules. An honorable mention goes to Goblin Piledriver.
TheManaSource The original painting was actually quite smaller than I expected when I saw it in person. It was only like 6"x8" at most. Still an amazing piece of art regardless.
I personally would love to have the artwork in the 10th Squee, Goblin Nabob card, I just love the happy goblin and the picture actully looks like someone I know
Excellent video. I have some Magic art pieces on my wall, none are of original source image, but rather limited edition, signed recreation prints sold by the artist themselves. My favorite I have signed is "Taste of Blood" by Howard Lyon in an edition of 30, I believe. Very affordable if you go with signed prints, as sometimes they're as cheap as 20 bucks. The Lyon print in particular I think was around 60, but still, very affordable if you want some high-quality art on your wall.
I don't really care for originals but I've been bummed out to find out that some artists won't even sell prints. I wanted to get an Ashling the Pilgrim for my wife only to find that Wayne Reynolds only sell SOME prints at conventions. It's a bit of a bummer.
MTG definitely has the best art. Brom is my favorite fantasy artist and did works like Gristle Brand and Lord of the Undying but Requiem Angle has to be my favorite magic art.
Very insightful video. I am a big fan of hand drawn/painted art. Is there a site that actually allow us to know which of the MTG cards belong to painted vs digital? Thanks
Not that I know of, especially as many artists experimented in digital/traditional media on the fly over the years. There is a list of 100% digital artists on OMA and once you start researching the topic you figure out who works in Photoshop and who doesn't. Is there any art in particular that you are wondering about?
Another fantastic video and great descriptions! I think there are to many cards to just pick one! Otherwise for my own enjoyment I would love Enduring Ideal by Daren Bader. I think, because it was my second casual deck I had when I technically first played magic, it was some of the most fun I have actually had! I had the amazing opportunity to meet Daren Bader the past 2 years at comic con, had had some artist proofs and more, but no enduring Ideal, so I picked up a couple small ones to take home (Maybe I should share them on UA-cam!) Can't wait to meet 24+ MTG artist this year @ SDCC + Another 8 @ Grand Prix San Diego!
Awesome! Only hanged up magic item I have it an uncut sheet of M15 Rare/Mythic Foil. BUT I did purchase two small magic art (not original pieces, but nice prints they had available) Jareth, Leonine Titan by Daren Bader & Rhystic Study by Tierese Nielson (I can't spell today X_X)
I was drooling for most of the video over this art which I would love to have and appreciate almost everyday. But then reality slapped me back to the real world. Guay and Staple's probably isn't cheap and angels as you said command a higher price for obvious reasons (but they are my favorite :/)
I know you said only one, but I have it narrowed down to 2 from my mono blue tiny leader's deck. Braintstorm, from Conspiracy or high tide from Amy Weber from Fallen Empires. Hopefully I don't get any hate on these choices, just my personal opinion.
Hey I was wondering if you could take about the glorious goblin piledriver since he was announced in origins and maybe how he'd fit into modern I'm still hoping they reprint skirk prospector because he would make goblins so much more competitive.
What if the artwork on some of the cards has inspired me as an artist, as i aspire to be at that level as an artist eventually. how would one go about getting art made into a card? or is that even a realistic goal...
I wish I could afford the actual paintings for now I'll be happy with prints. I have a Chris Rhan Magic Online Black Lotus and Adam Paquette's Modern Masters Manamorphose
@TolarianCommunityCollege Hello. I bought some Dragon shield sleeves off of your recommendation. I did your test of strength on them because I had to see it with my own eyes. Not only did the dragon shield FAIL to hold up its strength it was in fact EASIER for me to break my dragon shield then my Ultra pro sleeves. I bought the Dragon shield Black sleeves and as of right now. The Dragon shield sleeves have a F-- in my book. Can you explain what is going on?
EEGATZ, PROFESSOR!! Why did you choose Brandenburg Concerto No. 4??? Now I have to watch the segment like 20 times as I can't choose whom to listen to!!! D':
hell. the art makes for an important part of any game. even though i despise the cash-grab nature that Yugioh! has spiraled its self uncontrollably into, i can still appreciate the (he)art of the cards.
This video isn't my cup of tea. Nevertheless, you get a HUGE thumbs up for what must have been the colossal amount of research that went into its creation. Hat's off to ya profs.
Weirdly enough, I don't really care how the art is produced. I just care if it looks cool. Because of this, many paintings don't look all that appealing to me at all. Many digitally produced ones on the other hand look amazing. Steve Argyle has probably made most of my favorite arts. Surely I'm not the only one?
I'm already collecting Alpha cards, but I have to admit that collecting Alpha cards art is really tempting, but probably way too expensive for me Any way to get reproductions of some of them? (Like Black Lotus, Demonic Tutor, Balance, Fastbond, etc...)?
It was a pleasure to work with The Professor to put this together. I am already working on ideas for more videos.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to learn about Magic art.
Josh Krause I would like to know more about the process of submitting art to Wizards for cards and how I could get involved with creating art for Magic.
Code Provider
I support that idea ! :D
i second what Code Provider wrote :).
Same here. Would love to know how to go about gaining wizard's interest x3
Josh Krause I was wondering how much on average WotC pays the artist.
It should also be noted that contacting the artist directly is a great way to go. I bought a piece from Tempest last year because the artist simply had it all these years.
this would be a cool topic to revisit

Welp, still cheaper than getting into vintage!
I think this is probably the most slowly spoken, but best video of yours. I have actually asked this question, and never looked into the market.
Very nice video. Me and a friend collect vintage cards. Mostly anything (quantity before quality) and I can spend hours looking at the cards in the binders. The early sets are some of my favorite, but I love weatherlight to destiny too.
I think the Bitterblossom will always be my favorite, it just evokes a feeling of power whenever you look at it.
the feeling of money
And once again, you came up with another surprising video I had never thought of. this was really great to watch, would love to see more mtg art shows
We're already working on the next one. No eta but it will hopefully be just as good

He's done cards like Thraximunder, Vengvine, Vioshino Slaughtermaster, Dragonmaster Outcast, and many more.
Wow! I had no idea magic card art was painted at all! This is a very cool video about one of the more eclectic topics in Magic.
Would love to manage a museum of all the art!
I like the homage to one of your older videos about the paintings on your wall.
I love unique videos like this that explore others circles within the Magic world. Thanks! :D
I've been dreaming about such a video without knowing it. Thanks so much prof.
Ghost Concil of Orzohva
It is so creepy and I love them!
He has a Black Lotus.....
Which he plays in his Casual Cat Tribal Deck
I really like the older arts. Since Theros they all look so mega photoshopped. Look at Origin spoilers, some are so digital that I don't even like them anymore. That Sphinx guys head looks like it's badly put onto the body with paint.

An honorable mention goes to Goblin Piledriver.
Not all Magic art is just a painting. I saw a full size, 1:1 statue of Dakkon Blackblade at a local Renaissance Faire.
You should do one about the names hidden in Ron Spencer's artwork.
Haha it was hilarious when you threw your picture off the wall. Made me chuckle
5:22 I just wanted to leave a note so I could re-watch the sketch development for Shivan Dragon. I loved that card back in the day.
Two of my old pieces(Karn and TFK) made the reel! ;) Great vids TCC. Keep up the great work!
That Blightsteel Colossus art...I want it. It was the first foil mythic I ever opened
That's a nice Keane painting you've got there. I love her
Favorite Magic Origins Art?
Disciple of the Ring and Demonic Pact for me
That Morphling art!
I would fight for that...physically. With my fists.
TheManaSource The original painting was actually quite smaller than I expected when I saw it in person. It was only like 6"x8" at most. Still an amazing piece of art regardless.
TheManaSource Now THAT'S fist logic. Eat your heart, chandra!
TheManaSource no
Only women decorate their homes with ornaments bought with coin. Pay the Iron Price.
Where can I find magic art for purchase?
That chid on the wall is kinda creeps btw
If I could recommend an mtg channel, I would have to recommend Budget MTG Deck$.
I know it's unrelated, but I just want to say they are AMAZING! : )
The painting of the little girl on the wall with the kitten haunts my soul. I'm 100% sure she is going to hurt that cat.
Bach, Brandenburg Concertos. Wonderful
I personally would love to have the artwork in the 10th Squee, Goblin Nabob card, I just love the happy goblin and the picture actully looks like someone I know

Great video! I will have to check that site out, because there are some artworks out there that are pure mind expanders!
A very interesting and unseen point of MTG
You should do an episode about altered art.
Thanks

Orphans, how nice! My friend has that painting! Nice too see it elsewhere XD
i would love to make mtg art damn
Another fantastic video and great descriptions!

MTGNetDecker That piece is currently hanging on my wall. It's quite nice :)
Awesome! Only hanged up magic item I have it an uncut sheet of M15 Rare/Mythic Foil. BUT I did purchase two small magic art (not original pieces, but nice prints they had available)
Jareth, Leonine Titan by Daren Bader
&
Rhystic Study by Tierese Nielson
(I can't spell today X_X)
I wish I could have Greg Staples' "Squee, Goblin Nabob" and Rebecca Guay's Path of Exile DCI promo art.
I really enjoyed this video. It was very cool, unique and unexpected. I would like to see more videos about interesting facts about magic art.
I've recently watched the movie Big Eyes and instantly recognized the painting.
For me the best artwork will be raging goblin (with the axe), twisted abomination, severed legion and Krark clan grunt.
I was drooling for most of the video over this art which I would love to have and appreciate almost everyday. But then reality slapped me back to the real world. Guay and Staple's probably isn't cheap and angels as you said command a higher price for obvious reasons (but they are my favorite :/)
8 fucking years ago !! That’s amazing to see now and and then, keep going prof!!
I would really like the art for damnation. The card has true emotion behind it.
Thank you for your videos, professor! Thank you very much
I think I'll go buy some art, GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thank you for these insights.
I love the dragons of tarkir lands.
I know you said only one, but I have it narrowed down to 2 from my mono blue tiny leader's deck. Braintstorm, from Conspiracy or high tide from Amy Weber from Fallen Empires. Hopefully I don't get any hate on these choices, just my personal opinion.
my favorite art from origins is days undoing, i want it in foil! i think it will be butiful
this was incredibly interesting!
Ahh, vintage land art. Playing a deck without them seems so futuristic...
Alpha island is probably my favorit art or Any basic land by douglas shouler
The painting of the girl, wasn't it from the movie BIG EYES ?
Prof, have you considered the skinny tie?
I feel it doesn't suit me. I look...eh...just not my style.
Tolarian Community College does that also apply to the skinny jean? Haha.
Hey I was wondering if you could take about the glorious goblin piledriver since he was announced in origins and maybe how he'd fit into modern I'm still hoping they reprint skirk prospector because he would make goblins so much more competitive.
Ideal for me would be a cheaper, printed version of the card I want (Fog Bank). Where could I find something like that?
John Nilsson You should reach out to Howard Lyon for a print. There is a good chance he might already have one available.
I was waiting with certainty for you to rehang your 'Bitterblossom' and reveal it as the original. :)
Another great video.
I got to talk to Mark Zug a few years ago and bought the art for Worship.
RelinaUlryy That is awesome. Any way I can convince you to show it off on OMA?
RelinaUlryy What a wonderful piece!
Please let me know if you ever decide to move it. One on my short list.
What if the artwork on some of the cards has inspired me as an artist, as i aspire to be at that level as an artist eventually.
how would one go about getting art made into a card? or is that even a realistic goal...
I'd give anything for Bitterblosom or Uril the mist stalker
it's video's like this ...I love your channel for!!
I wish I could afford the actual paintings for now I'll be happy with prints. I have a Chris Rhan Magic Online Black Lotus and Adam Paquette's Modern Masters Manamorphose
How much is shipping.
Already sent to my sky box
Stunning video as always Professor. Does anybody know where you can get Lightning bolt art prints like the one you see on some of his videos?
I really like Starfield of Nyx right now, i wonder how much it will go for.
Starfield of Nyx was created digitally and there is no painting for it. Prints should be available from the artists though.
I would really like to own at least one piece of Magic art. If I were to choose one, I would narrow it down to one of the Zendikar lands.
Sadly most of those were done digitally. I believe John Avon did pencil sketches for his but the others only exist on hard drives afaik
Where'd the bitterblossom art go?
@TolarianCommunityCollege Hello. I bought some Dragon shield sleeves off of your recommendation. I did your test of strength on them because I had to see it with my own eyes. Another very informative video! Is that a Sultai tie? Sultie? :P
If only this could fill my arts credit
What is the ceiling??
CLAYMORE J. FLAPDOODLE!!!!!!
That is all.
One of you best Vids!
hell. the art makes for an important part of any game. even though i despise the cash-grab nature that Yugioh! has spiraled its self uncontrollably into, i can still appreciate the (he)art of the cards.

I'm trying to find a Phyrexian Oblierator Painting, but I've had no luck.
Spckeck Phyrexian Obliterator was created digitally. Todd Lockwood transitioned to 100% digital for his Magic work some time after Onslaught Block.
Sigh, that's what I was afraid of.
Can u do a video about altered art and where to get it
Alters are definitely a great thing to talk about
Tolarian Community College Where can I buy recreations ?
ALL I WANT IS TO KNOW HOW TO DRAW LIKE THIS
Where can I find prints of the art?
+Camden Paolucci The best way to find prints is generally to contact the artists
Man, I would love the original wrath of god or lord of the pit...
I would love to have the art
of Nissa Revane
Great video.
The only digital art I prefer over the original is the modern masters Dark Confidant
I'm already collecting Alpha cards, but I have to admit that collecting Alpha cards art is really tempting, but probably way too expensive for me
Any way to get reproductions of some of them? (Like Black Lotus, Demonic Tutor, Balance, Fastbond, etc...)?
We've seen a few such recreations from the original artists lately. If you contact the artist directly you can definitely commission one.
GREAT video
wonderful info :)
