I was at my local hobby store today, and I heard the cashier say "there's a lot of new fans complaining about the UA-cam drama and what not. I guess they don't know GW have been arse heads for years now".
I'm glad to know he didn't lie about it.
You got me in the first half, not gonna lie.
In my experience Warhammer Shopkeepers are just fans who happen to work for GW. There is literally no one supervising them so they just blatantly say whatever they want XD
We all know that Warhammer is way to expensive of a hobby, but its way too good to let that stop us
I don't think he will be a store manager for much longer.
@@Marinealver Well, it was a local hobby store, not a GW one, so he'll be just fine
@@Marinealver Besides, who would care? The customers certainly wont run to GW, and as long as he sells, no one in Nottingham cares.
TTS was my doorway into the community. The community and Games Workshop then kicked me right back out. Love the people that made TTS. The mythos of 40k, super cool. Games Workshop? No thankyou.
I legit find TTS better written than most high budget shows
I'm gonna try and be as much a part of the 40k community as I can, without acknowledging GWs existence
@@Scrombo2 same here love Warhammer fantasy and 40k but the company its just terrible especially with the animation part.
@@uglyweirdo1389 I'm glad we have that much, but I wish I could believe you about everything being all right
@@uglyweirdo1389 oh yeah, I get what you mean, I'm glad everyone is doing as well as they are, this whole thing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and I'm convinced something else is gonna go wrong, ya know?
Geez that was a rollercoaster. I could feel Davvys genuine fan frustration coming through in some parts and his love in others (mostly frustration though)
Warhammer copies Tolkien, Heinlein, and everyone, then sues everybody for copying them. The end.
Pretty much.
"How dare they copy our original idea of copying other people's original ideas! That's our thing!"
Don't forget Herbert. Everything from the Emperor of Mankind to the Navigators to the Mechanicus tech-monopoly came out of ideas from Dune.
Well if you mix up enough stuff into something new, no one will notice. First DM Rule of DnD.
Hey don't forget Moorecock!
When I see that golden throne thanks to TTS I can only think of a rambling old skeleton man.
Same
hahahaha, i was on my way to write exactly the same thing XD
I'll never forget Emps' first words: "About fuckin' time"
My thoughts on GW's attacks on its own community can only be summarized as **agitated skeleton shriek**
I lived through most of this. Kind of meta seeing it all listed out in order and explained by a master orator. Thx again!
"You can get a fanbase to try a new thing.* *So long as they didn't like the thing that came before it." Underrated line of youtube brilliance xD
It's kinda sad to see gw seemingly refuse to learn from their past mistakes. Lately they haven't just not listened to their fan base but outwardly ignored them. From new codexes bumping old armies to meta status to old armies being made basically unplayable (cough cough chaos space marines) I really hope they see their long serving fans are the reasons they exist at all as apposed to being just another asset. A man can dream.
It's all about money and their shareholders. Welcome to capitalism.
The worst part about this hobby has unfortunatly always been GW, it's with an grimm enjoyment I see all the newer fans find out about it.
When they said "grimdark" they meant for your bank account lmao
Tbh this was a very apt and balanced overview. I started looking into warhammer as a hobbyist again during lockdown. When I started the company would often send bonus models and letters in deliveries and also if any issues occurred during orders. When I left the prices rose, but service declined. Due to focusing on work I took a prolong absence and now am not sure I will come back.
TTS got me into the hobby. Some people think its cringe, but I came to love the people involved with it as a project. The world of 40k still interests me, but until GW creates a environment that can allow things like TTS, I can't imagine myself giving them another dime.
Then don't my good sir. There are *whispers* dark paths...which allow you to skip paying GW whilst also still being able to play...
I’ve never enjoyed tts’s humor. But I respect it as a core part of this franchise I have a love-hate relationship with. seeing it unceremoniously culled in a back alley by GW is pretty indicative of the issues going on right now
Buy a cheap 3d printer and just print your own. Fuck GW
@@cornmaized I am glad you can appreciate it's place in the community even if you aren't a fan of the comedy.
Ha ha ha this must have taken forever I am going to assume it is a masterpiece
It'll be... good enough.
Games Workshop could honestly make a lot more money by just listening to its fans.
We want to give Games Workshop money in exchange for the toy soldiers we like. We don't want to go to war with our favourite toy-maker. Throwing its biggest supporters under the bus for short-term profit is going to backfire.
I was so engrossed in the story until 27:28 when I was suddenly shook by the picture of my local hobby shop. Did a triple take just to be sure I wasn't imagining things, then continued on. 10/10 video Mr. Chappy.
I feel its relevant to mention that Total War Warhammrr and Vermintidr came out with Age of Sigmar being the game not warhammer 8th.
8:02 God bless you Tim Curry you are 10 types of awesome
Having the ad placed just when Tim Curry is about to say SPACE is downright evil. Great video though.
To badly quote someone "you were such a great lad ts' just a shaame you grew up to be such a shite man"
I love the setting, feel and characters of 40k but the company making them is just too greedy and shitty for me to support them right now. I hope they start improving their buisness modell more in favor of the customers so I can start spending money on their plastic crack like a good little fan boy.
You'll be waiting a long time unfortunately
As someone who loves Dwarves, Kharadron Overlords were my introduction into Warhammer things. With all this free time and a stimulus check I bought a bunch of minis and paints. I will probably never play Warcry or the main AoS game, but they look so cool and I've already begun to incorporate their lore into my 5E homebrewed stuff. I have also started collecting and assembling some Ogryns, Ratlings and Squats for an Abhuman Imperial Guard Kill Team. Speaking of 40k and Squats, wth Games Workshop? There seems to be enough of a demand, bring them back in a large capacity.
This is well timed because I just started using TTS to play with my buddy
You have done a honorable job Sir Davvy Chappy, your contribution to the histories of the Imperium has been recognized as accurate and true! Continue your work as a noble informer to reach ever greater heights of Glory! For the Imperium! FOR THE EMPEROR!!
Do not feel bad for GeeDub, they are reaping what they sow. If they just focused on cultivating gaming communities in their games stores and lowered prices, you would essentially swap short term burst gains for long term steady gains.
Awesome breakdown! I feel really sad since I’m selling all my Warhammer stuff other that Blood Bowl, as the company pushed me away from the hobby.
It’s sad to see the things that brought you into the hobby, be the reason why you leave…
rip the non-disney GW, it was a very short era
Something that truly baffles me is that Steve Jackson and Steve Jackson never sat down and said "one of us has to be 'Steven'"
I clicked on what I thought was a lore video and instead got a very detailed explanation of why the thing I love is almost entirely creatively bankrupt
I have a love of warhammer from when my dad introduced me to the game in my childhood and it makes me sad to report that Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40k in their current forms have turned me off from table top war gaming almost entirely. At least in my experience tactics and infantry mean almost nothing as monsters can blend through a maximum sized unit worth three times the number of points in one turn and heroes are one man armies, whoever has the most expensive monsters and heroes usually wins and whoever found the least corners to cut on infantry gets shafted.
Right now the only super strong infantry in 40K are skitarii vanguards just because of the new stratagems anything else feels kind of weak.
I would suggest switching to Kings of War. It's basically old school Warhammer with big regiments and the like, it's miniatures agnostic so...those GW models aren't going to waste...
Funny you say that because the current meta is infantry spam.
part of that is that is the fact that I mostly play craftworlds and my friends run very tank heavy lists so I do have a rather narrow view of the game. Most of the reason they feel weak to me is probably because of the insane anti infantry my friends field. Punisher Gatling cannons are not something to scoff at.
@@variableaxis9652 as someone who's used punishers every game all of 9th, idk it's been so useless I'm thinking of permanently shelving it and rebuilding it as something else
Lets not forget the saga of single employee GW shops...
Okay, so I´m watching the video and something stands out. At the 7:17 mark, there´s a picture from a GW store. And I can proudly say that it´s the store here, in my hometown of Gothenburg!
I was introduced to the hobby through Total War: Warhammer and was seriously considering getting into the table top war games. But with the recent attacks on their own community I have to decided to look elsewhere. I have found other games (one page rules is great you should check it out) and I plan on investing on a 3D resin printer with money that I was going to put in GW’s pocket. I love the franchise but the greedy bastards that own it can shove it.
If you cant aford a 3s printer, a bunch o people sell their on (kinda ilegal) minis by way lower prices
just play Tabletop sim.
@@leonvalenzuela4096 some people like to have minis. But yeah i play it all on tabletop sim
When I started with Games Workshop (6th Ed Fantasy) all the 40 yr olds were warning me about GW business practices. Now that I'm in my 40s, I do caution all the new GW gamers about what they spend their money. It's not just the miniatures, it's all the rules and army books! If you want to seriously get into table top wargaming, these high quality 3D resin printers are the way to go.
Good luck.
If you like Total war: warhammer, you will be disappointed that the setting is totally different in AoS and the game is a skirmish quite shitty and umbelanced.
this is the best summary of GW history I've seen on youtube
finally, me constantly pointing out warhammer pics in davvys vids has paid off!
The cover to the 1983 Warhammer box is such a great image. I imagine the hammer making a "thwock!" sound as it beans that skeleton.
12:56 Hell's Teeth, that Ork Army is zoggin' magnificent.
BATTLESWORD MODELS!!!!
I got my fan article published by GW back is episode 94 of Fanatic. I started my school club, I was wargaming sec at my universities RPG soc. I had thousands of points of Warhammer and 40k, but then apocalypse replaced city fight and my pure scout army was not acceptable at game night, I was told I had to bring tanks. So I played more WFB, and then they said I couldn't use my Dogs of War army any more, I couldn't use the 6th edition PDF or even count as Empire, so I focused on my specialist games , Necromunda and Inquisitor... Then they banned my Inquisitor Miniatures for using too many non GW parts and so I used only my original design figures... And they asked me not to take up space. I love Warhammer and 40k, I will always enjoy the Lore and add it to my other games. But I will no longer give them my money.
Well, I'm glad that a new generation of hobbyists will know to curse the name of Kirby.
I honestly thought this was going to be a history of the world or setting of Warhammer but this turned out to be far more exciting. Good show!
As someone who waa fully into the hobby 1998-2003, and then went past a shop the other day wondering WTF thank you for filling in the last 15+ years
GW did not Dmca TTS, they didn’t cease and desist it. The creator citing uncertainty chose to end it.
And the vids are still fully monetized and up on youtube
They chose to not continue due to GW changes.
Better to not fight and keep what they have than continuing and potentially loosing everything.
You don't get enough credit, this video was awesome, thank you!
Best breakdown of gw history I've ever heard
See if anyone who watches adeptus ridiculous knows...
You know the tale of the scorpion and the frog. The scorpion asks the frog to help them travel over a lake and the frog says "ok but don't sting me or we'll both die". So the scorpion gets on the frogs back but halfway across it stings the frog. The frog goes "why'd you sting me now we both die" in which the scorpion replies "lmao its in my nature" and they both drown and die?
Yeah GW is that scorpion. Its in its nature to do shit that does not make sense
Honestly as someone who has been in this hobby for more than a quarter century now, the Warhammer+ outrage is not only nothing new, it pales in comparison to the release of Age of Sigmar, or Primaris Space Marines, or the Ward-dexes, or formations, or any number of other things. The outrage this time is somewhat amplified by the fact it's affecting the parts of the community with the loudest online voices, but it's also not directly affecting the tabletop, which remains GW's bread and butter. GW had record profits over lockdown and the player base is still growing pretty rapidly.
I like wargaming minitures, i currently collect dark ageish armies and some other stuff. i don't actually have a group to play with but they are so fun to collect and paint
for 28 millimeter i recommend wargames Atlantic they are pretty good
Remember to only buy pirated versions of whatever GW owns since they killed our TTS.
This is so well done. I knew of the most recent GW stuff but o boy it went much deeper than I could have imagined. We can relate to company with fantasy game becoming greedy as hell and destroying their own game
I was first exposed to GW in '87 when I got Rogue Trader for Xmas. Never played it, but loved the art and the style. I steered *waaay* wide of 2e as it seemed to have a built in Argument Phase...
But, then, I got stuck in MD. Being about 60minutes away from the US HQ of GW I struggled to find a D&D Game. So, I bit the bullet and jumped into 40K.
I went deep. I played a lot. I devoured lore. I loved it. I got good at the game. (my painting was barely tabletop-quality, much less Golden Demon, so...) By the end, @2006 I moved overseas (from AZ to Germany) and let 40K start slipping.
After several years I tried to dip my toes back in, and all I got was a "I fucking hate Flyers" attitude. The game definitely chose it's new meta (buy me!) and I was not willing to follow it.
I am grateful that I got to play a mad lot of 40K during it's Golden Era (3e to 5e), so there's that. And about 25,000 points in models in GW pistol cases in my basement...
Thanks for the video :)
End timea still hurts....i really loved 8th ed fantasy....
Still finishing TTS but the whole situation is like this from my understanding
Your Biological father who usually abandoned you and never spoke to you came back to make it all right. The downside is that now for some reason is banning you from ever seeing your stepfather who has raised you all your life
Always a great vid. Thanks.
Adam
I went to the very first GW store in the middle 80s. That's when they were radical, before they turned into The Man.
This was a well produced and informative history of GW.
The last remnants of Games Workshop died when Rick Priestley left. R.I.P (Corehammer for life x)
Only taste of Games Workshop was friends who played 40K and my dip into Deathwatch (TTRPG) and Vermintide 2.
I really wanna know what armies Davvy had since he's gotten experience with these games
8:00 THAT WAS PURE GOLD
Amazing to think that Warhammer was inspired by D&D my gaming journey went the other direction... the funny part is that Warhammer video games are actually affordable
Lets be real, Once 3D printing minis gets big enough, Instead of GW actually trying to fix their broken ass business they are just gonna sue everyone making minis that look even slightly like a space marine (Which ive always found ironic as fuck given how much of Warhammer is pulled from other sources of fantasy and history)
Waiting for part 2 in around 25 years. :3
Awesome summary, thanks Davvy 👌
The Lorraine Williams cameo at 14:14 had me choke on my 🥤.
Well played, sir.
This is a good video. Checked your channel, subscribed
This is why 3d printing is taking over
Hold brothers. Hold the line.
GW never made or published a video game.
They had a booth at a corporate-fair where they advertised their IP to sell licenses. Other companies then purchased a license or engaged in ‘partnership’ and made stuff.
Loads and loads of that stuff was really bad, GW is just lucky some of them were actually good and popular. They really had nothing much to do with it, other than the Warhammer IP. Even Total War Warhammer was made on Sega’s initiative.
Damn, I did not know GW did Rogue Trooper Minis for a bit, that comic fucking slapped
"It is in Gee Dub's nature to do Stupid Shit." ~Bricky
Would love to see one of these videos on MtG
Love your Vids!
The tts thing got marked in my mind forever dude, It happened in such a happy day in my life i almost got fucking wiplash from It, It was the day me and my so started dating after years of quite messy feelings, and then i get home all gidy and read the notification for alfabusa's heartfelt video about having to halt the series, really fucked up
I'm impressed by the research. How did you uncover everything?
Really enjoyed this! I am curious how the mobile game fits into everything if you do decide to do an update
Thank you for summing up the incredibly strange and twisted path that is GW.
Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the video.
It seems like dad went to buy a pack of smokes again for my 21rst birthday.
Awesome video.
"said convention had been canceled due to the hosts of the convention cancelling it!" What a shocking turn of events!
Maybe you should do a video on Steve Jackson, yes, that one.
Hey I want to make my own history of games workshop. Where did you get your sources?
If you are taking suggestion for these (or even continue to doing these). Maybe can you consider the Traveller TRPG? I think it could be interesting since it has diferent editions by diferent companies sometimes even having two editions being officially supported at the same time. Plus it has interesting origins as a supplement for Starship wargames for diplomatic meetings and greater army politics in classic scifi that developed into a RPG with mechanics very diferent from modern D&D or general d20 systems.
Can't wait for A History of Rolemaster
I still have the WFB 2nd edition rule books still in the box
As an old-guard 40k nerd I am sad...as an even older-guard Battletech nerd, I say "Welcome, friends! Y'all like giant fuckoff robots and warcrimes?"
Great video!
This is fascinating. Thank you
I'm a simple man, I see Tim Curry screaming "SPAICE!", I click like
Warhammer (especially 40K) strikes me as something that I could enjoy, if I could afford to spend 800 dollars and god knows how much time painting tiny stuff. T.T
Great video, but the ending was a bit shaky for me. One of the community content creators I follow (HeyWoah, the AoS Why Play X Army guy) has been following the whole 'controversy' regarding content creators on YT being forced to stop their work, and according to his research nobody has been hit with either a C&D and/or received a strike to their YT channels. Time will tell I guess, but it seems like GW just reminded people that they own their IP, and if you abuse/misuse it to make a buck, they can get said buck.
Very very entertaining.
For what it's worth, I heard about 40k in 2020 looking for a new hobby to pass the time in isolation. A couple of friends and I played a couple games on roll20 to learn the rules. But when I went to find current material for armies and the cost of minis to play with, everything was either ridiculously expensive or just didn't exist. I really like the Custodes and I put a 1200 point army together on a Google doc because as far as I could tell that was the standard army size (standardised play is another issue that 40k has in that no one seems to agree on what a normal game should look like) and it was just shy of £2k.
So after an honest good couple months trying to pick up the hobby, I can say that 40k is just not welcoming to new players or people without expendable income. The closest I've come to a 40k game is the Play on Tabletop channel.
2k, how? Assuming you purchase through 3rd parties in the UK for the usual 15 to 25% discount you can get a 2000 point Custodes army around £200. Paints, glue etc adds a bit. But unless you are going full scale Forgeworld I can't work out your numbers.
I get GW armies are hell expensive, but I actually think they are cheaper now than anytime since red and blue stickers were a thing in the 1990s.
Age of Sigmar massively reduced the cost of fantasy armies.
For anyone outside the UK I get pricing is a massive problem.
There is one simple answer to all of Game Workshops current issues, particularly after 2020:
...Digital Models...
If Game Workshop made a digital version of their table top game, especially one that played identically to the physical game, they wouldn't have nearly as many problems as they do now. However, this is a company that has refused to adapt to the market in the past and is likely to fail one to many times going forward. I, honestly, look forward to seeing what other people do with the Intellectual Property once the rights holders dissolve into nothing....
I’d like to hope they will change their ways but I’m not sure any.
Davvy's favorite faction?
only correct answer is Orkz!
Blood Angels for 40k
Fish Elves for AoS
@@DavvyChappy interesting...I thought you would be a drukhari or a orks player.
@@DavvyChappy what about the good old Warhammer Fantasy?
@@prtwriter4660 why the orks? Because of the bulging muscles?😂
19:15 Matt Ward is a terrible fan fiction writer but an awesome codex writer. I hate vampires, they squick me out but I very nearly bought into blood angels because I wanted an assault marine army (I have a jump pack Horus heresy world eaters army)
wow ... war hammer started with 1e and then 2e and now they are in 40,000e ? crazy turn up !!!!
ALL PRAISE SUNBUTT
On the bright side, GW can't mess up WFB anymore, though I'm aware of the Warhammer: Old World thingamajig they're planning. A shame really that they decided to go for bigger unit sizes and monsters towards the end of it's life (8th ed specifically) while the prices kept going up but not the models sell per box (10 models for 40€ is expensive when the meta unit is around 30-40 models).
I believe Midwinter minis did a video about the price of warhammer minis over time. tl;dw: for a lot of models it actually WAS inflation that made the price go up. For others, yeah it was just greed.
The Price Point is exactly why I left the Hobby in 2006. I went to buy a new Eldar Army and just about shit myself at the cost to re-start. Walked out of the Store, never went back in
I dunno, I could be misunderstanding as it seems like you jump around on the timeline a smidge.
I remember buying minis in the late 80s early 90s as a kid and Ral Partha packages advertised Raldium lead free pewter?
What I was told is that a kid chewed on a lead figure and tragically died from lead poisonings.
Perhaps games workshop stuck with lead but I have OG stuff from the late 80s that feels like pewter.
