    H2n: amzn.to/2xjZ8PT
Giant Squid Audio Lav mic: amzn.to/2wOMarO
In this video I'll compare the audio quality of the Zoom H1 and the Zoom H2n field recorders, presenting real examples of different recording scenarios.
    - Camera-mounted
    - Tabletop mic tripod
    - Lav mic
As a benchmark, we'll also listen to a recording made with my camera's internal microphone.
In conclusion, either field recorder (and/or the suggested lavalier mic) provides a huge upgrade in audio quality as compared with my camera's internal microphone.
If you do decide to purchase a field recorder or lav mic, please do follow my links to Amazon to help support this channel. I will receive a small commission on any purchase through the Amazon Affiliate program.
Be sure to check my channel for other field recorder reviews and comparison, including many additional recording scenarios.

Thanks for this, did the blind test and consistently preferred the HN1! Saved me £42 so in these days, that is about 1 pint of beer. Cheers!

Thank you very much! This test was excellent as it tested pretty much all modes I care about (on camera, on table and Lav).
In the blind I liked the most both table mounted H2n recordings - the best balance between ambiance, clarity and fullness.
I am curious if the rigid camera mount is a problem with handling noise if you are hand-holding the camera? Do you think a simple "shockmount" hotshoe adapter brings enough improvement to be worth the size and uglyness penalty?

Can't say enough good things about this video. Not enough review videos enable blind testing - so helpful. Love the song at the beginning. Would love to hear you through a better mic though! Bit of background noise. Whatever the 5th option was was my favorite. (Time to replay your video to find out)... WOW, the H1!

Dude! Super efficient and telling comparison. I have the H1N and am getting the H2N for separate reasons. The H2N will do auto-record differently than the H1N and that's why I'll have both. Thank you.

I'm in the market for a H1 replacement--dropped on the floor one too many times. I own one of the first models, think i got it in 2011/12, that i had to upgrade the firmware and then could use it as a usb mic..which is the only way i want to use it. I have it plugged into a macbook, never use batteries, just a usb cable.. just for skype and recording acoustic guitar and stuff. Have seen a H2n at a pretty good price...wondering if it functions as a usb mic???? Why the zoom is better than a standard usb mic, is that it has a built in input level control, you change the resolution, also you can monitor off the zoom while recording and have latency free recording..pretty cool. the recording here were inconclusive to me ..both sounded ok, but the h2n seemed to pick up more of the room...did you use auto leveller??? It seemed like on the h1 recording you had some kind of limiter??? H2n sounded more "roomy" or natural.

hey! i am trying to decide on which one to get, to record songs and sounds from travels , so i guess field recordings open space, but when recording songs, i wouldnt like too many other sounds .. tough decision. Any idea? Thank you

My opinion ... The H1 with the lav mic sounds like you are talking straight to me... without any machine tone (for lack of a better term). Still...I will be buying one H2N, as I already have a H1N and I love it.

Hi ! thanks a lot for the very interesting test. Which recording format did you use for the test ? i guess that increasing the resolution should give the chance to pick up differences more easily. I love 16/48 format. The one of dat and dvd. Much better than cd format unfortunately.

Thanks a lot. Also on the basis of this very good test i bought a H1. I have a dream but i am afraid it will remain just a dream because it is physically impossible. I hope that one day with some sort of dsp someone will be able to get also with HPs a sound coming from the front. In all my listenings i have never experienced this kind of sensation. I have got sound out of the head but never coming from the front and this is for me the main bad point with HPs. After a while they become fatiguing. As i said it could be just impossible but it is a dream.

@@bekoa.4350 Hi, personally I only use 32gb SD cards, which forces you to pop them out and put other ones in. Now my job is spread out on different drives. You dont want a 500GB SD card to crap out on you.
As a general rule 1 is non / 2 = 1 / and 3 copies of something in dif places is safe
2 drives within laptop = work goes onto system drive (samsung 970 m.2 evo plus v-nand so questest 250gb)
Once edited and job finished i place things onto >>>
Second internal SDD Drive as "new stuff" (samsung SDD 850 v-nand 500gb)
Afterwards I also transfer the "new stuff" folder to a external M.2 as second backup device
Eventually "new stuff" will make its way to one of my 2TB normal external hard drives for safe keeping, where i transfer it in one go and then place everything into different folders. These harddrives i hardly ever use. I just buy a new one when its full. I have 3 so far.
And if its important, i burn it on a disc as well and keep that in a folded piece of paper and then a folder. I wouldnt trust memory sticks, put i would SD cards if you wanted to do that instead.
I havent tried cloud servers - but i suspect backing up to them would be your safest bet now

Took this fun test (thank you) and later found out which device:
    7723 sharp = camera
    1228 # warm background warm = H1
    3367 sharp = h2
    7468 sharp = h2
    4243 # nice like = h1
    8725 sharp = h2
    1065 sharp = h2
    4623 ok = h2
    1141 # better = h1
    ... So I feel the h1 won!
    subbed thank you

    • @accardadrien
      @accardadrien 6 років тому

DiyEcoProjects it's true the h1 has a warmer sound than the h2n, but I don't think it won the match though. It feels like the h1 has kind of a muffled sound, that's (I think) how it gives the warm impression. And I think the h2n has a more natural sound but i feel it's not made to be close to the mouth (there are hisses when he talks with the tabletop setup).
Though all of this is my opinion, and I respect yours ! ^^

      DiyEcoProjects oh, I have a h2n but I didn't use it yet x)

ah interesting thanks... ill check those out. More questions please, if thats ok
What are you using them for?
How do you keep your data safe? dvd's plus external hard drive?
Events >Im thinking of event halls where theres guest speakers already speaking into handheld mics. I can take a feed off the events mixing desk with a 1/3 jack pin --- into my samsung phone (with Y splitter sterio into mobile) for recordings until i get the zoom h1. i guess this can double for weddings when couples are saying the vows.
Id also record voice from 6meters away, directional > I bought a ATian TAKSTAR SGC-598 shotgun mic as reviews say its good, it adds 10db before the camera input. Tried it, very clean. I cant afford RØDE's yet, but i hear they are the best. Making my own windshields with fake fur lol - bird feeder case, foam inner to hole the mic and fur outer. I want to test it outside near the beach.
For sitting interviews > ive got 2x lavalier mics (on extension 2m cables for now, later 2x wireless Pyle-Pro PDWM96, plus Y splitter, one receiver into recorder).
      ...
Another thing been thinking about - sound landscapes
Something like, filming two people A + B sitting and talking. Then sound comes from right
Camera pans right or new camera position from right as person C comes in through the door and says something... walking into view sitting down with them.
What i mean is, using the sound to inform the viewer where to "look" next before the shot. Is that good?
Thanks for sharing, all the best

H1n has a more condenser mic vibe
H2n has more of a natural ambient sound it makes your voice so silky...
I honestly came for the comparison and stayed for the story, what book did you use for the recordings?!? I cannot sleep till I know...

Gives audio comparison but fails to de-ess his 'S' sibilance. Use a de-esser plugin or roll off some gain between 5 to 10kHZ
