wow.. thanks so much. i've been struggling with trying to get a good sound with this combination. louder on the recorder or camera and so on and i couldnt tell what was really the weak spot. it was clearly the cameras gain being up too high and not enough volume output from the zoom. look forward to this. great video thanks John!
Don't forget the clap at the beginning of your filming, it will makes it easier at editing stage to sync as you will see a big spike in the drawing of your waveform when your hands join & clap. Beware of possible drift over a recording lasting a long long time.
THANKS! this really helps me a lot because i'm a freelance videographer and i've been having trouble with bad sound quality from my on-board camera microphone, especially on weddings and corporate events.
This is really clever! Great feature. I've been fighting with shotgun mics for a little while now. Affordable consumer mics just aren't that good, and there's a huge leap in quality and price between consumer shotguns and professionally oriented gear. The backup recording on top of the direct feed is a nice convenience, too! So far I've hooked up to my Panasonic HCV770. For that, I recommend turning the internal camcorder levels all the way down to -30. -27 should be okay but you'll start getting some preamp hiss at that point. This camcorder is super sensitive in that regard. For the H1n's LINE OUT level, I set it at 22, and then the gain at 8. With that I was able to get good capture from subjects nearby but also minimize the preamp hiss. Depending on your needs you should be able to use a little more gain or a little more LINE OUT volume and only take on an editable amount of hiss.
Thank you. Tried it with my Canon T3i - works perfectly. With the "Lantern Firmware" you can also use a common Headphone. So you can control the input like a "Pro" .
Just ordered a part through your link. Hope it helps your channel. I’m currently looking at DSLR cameras and u just made it easy to find what I needed for my Zoom H1N mic to attach to my G0Pr09. Great Video!
Just wanted to let you know that the link you attached is currently unavailable. “Valley Enterprises 3.5mm Male Right Angle to 3.5mm Male Right Angle Audio Cable, Length 6 Inches“ Not sure if selecting another link from that product still helps ur channel. Just a heads up. 🤙🏼
Thank's...! this is very really helps me a lot because i'm a freelance videographer and i've been having trouble with bad sound quality from my on-board camera microphone, Frome Indonesia..NAF Drone
The Giant Squid lav mic sounds so much better. It appears to be discontinued though using your link. What other mic would you recommend? How did you record it and use phantom power?
John this is exactly the setup I was looking for as I already have the Zoom Hn1 mic, very well explained I didn't know about the pass through to the camera. You saved me a lot of money, thanks! Took me about 2 mins to get everything working with my Sony A7III, the tip for the Zoom audio signal generator was awesome. This video +100.
Excellent John, really good & easy to understand video. Thanks for taking the time to create & upload it 🙂I'd never thought of using my H1n like this, instead always fiddling about with external mics' & the usually poor internal amps' of cameras. Only problem, well not so much a problem, more an irritation really(!) is my Panasonic GH2 & FZ200 use silly little 2.5mm jacks! Not an issue to hook up, but I just find Panasonic's decision to use this tiny little, non-standard, size ridiculous. Anyway, achieved your suggested results (with the right cable!) & very happy, thanks, take care, A 🙂
Great video and now I know what that 1kHz signal was for. I calibrated my X-S10 and I'm right in the sweet spot now. Question: The H1n ships with two sets of stereo mini cables. One for Fuji Sony and Panasonic etc. and the other for Canon and Nikon. Can you explain the difference between the cables?
Excellent video. I just subscribed. Now I need to go look at your UA-cam channel and see what you are using to create this video. The sound is excellent!
I've found that adjusting the mic level to -12 db from the camera is the best option with lumix g7. Other g7 owneres: Lemme know if you found something better
Is it every audio recorder can connect to camera via the cable and use as on camera mic exactly like how we plug in the shot gun mic? I need your advice, this seem awesome for me .
very nice video, for short films I think we should use boom pole to bring zoom closer - what long wire has to be bought for that, and will this make his or cracking sound if boom operator / boom pole moves a bit while shooting
Great lesson, i own Tascam DR10l and am using it same way on my X-T3 (Tascam is connected to Røde Videomicro). Only thing is i dont know how to make -6db or-12db constant beep in order to adjust volume. Audio quality is way better that way.
This is quite excellently explained. I'm a total noob at this just looking to understand first of all what I need and how these things work. It makes perfect sense and it's a good demo as well, thank you.
Great explanation, Can you please tell me connect to connect ZoomH1n and Boya BY M1 lav mic to my smartphone so that I can record Audio and Video in together.
Your video is just so so helpful, thank you. I'm learning so much. Just before I watched your video, I literally just bought the H1N and was thinking so hard if I have to spend on the Video Mic Pro Plus too. Luckily I didn't. I'll do your method first!
Im looking for some nice holder for the Zoom H1N to my Somy A7 III - and with some kind of dampening. Is there a hotshoe-solution, thats using rubber or rubberband so the Zoom wont touch any surfaes?
This is a great video. But I have a question for you that the audio of this video that you uploaded, was it after post-production of audio or raw audio?
What is the microphone you're actually using the record this video? I noticed that there was a drop in quality when you switched to the zoom/camera set to show how it would sound.
Excellent video, especially for non -tech savvy people like me. I recently bought the Zoom H1N and I have been using a Boya BY-M1 mic with my Nikon D5300. I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
If you have the option would you choice this over the Rode Video mic? (would this be less directional? in compare to a shotgun mic option?) Thanks in advance
Question, will it still record audio onto camera's SD card even if the Zoom H1n has no sd card installed or it still needs a micro sd to operate as a external mic for the camera?
I want to do this kind of setup for filming my band gigs. Is there such a feavre where you can save your custom preset settings for both audio and video that you can just reload when you are ready to film?
Thanks a lot 😊 It works perfectly with GH5! So easy, but why on the earphone jack and not the microphone jack...😑 I have to sync my video concert of last week and the audio from gh5 is all saturated 😅 So...Vintage style to sync mys rushes 🥺
Hey John, this was really helpful. Do you think that the same approach will work with Cannon Camcorder? (Legria HFG25). Specifically will the stereo audio cable do the same job in this set up? Thanks!
Mr Chow, this is what I'm interested in, but I want to use import the sound from my H1n by a stereo cable into my GoPro Hero 7 Black. Have you done this? If so, what's the best way?
Great video, very informative ! Thank you so much ! 👍🏼 I'm gonna try this on my Lumix GX8 camera (with very poor built-in microphone), so I can finally achieve decent ukulele videos, lol.
To turn the Zoom H1 and H1n into an on camera mic, you only need the following items: amzn.to/2FXAbg4 and amzn.to/2IfLIt3
thanks for the video! Could you explain how to do this with the Zoom H1.
Since you can't press play and stop on that one (There's only a play button)
@@LouiseVanAssche The procedure is the same.
@@MotoTTZ But I can't seem to get the test tone with the H1.. Which buttons should I press then?
@@LouiseVanAssche Ya, the H1 can't do a test tone. You'll have to experiment to find the idea level.

I keep watching John I'm learning so much from your great video tuts 😁
This is on point, zero fluff and easy to understand. Thank you sir.
Oh my god. Thank you, John. you will never know how much you helped me with this great video! Keep up the great work!
Don't forget the clap at the beginning of your filming, it will makes it easier at editing stage to sync as you will see a big spike in the drawing of your waveform when your hands join & clap. Beware of possible drift over a recording lasting a long long time.
Lots of programs these days syncs it for you lol

The audio for the video was better than the sample for the H1 at the 7:00 mark. What are you using to record this video?
very informative video he touched on most of my questions for using the zoom as better sound quality recorder
The TEST TONE trick is a total game changer - thanks!

What audio setup were you using to film this video? It's noticeably better than the example of using the Zoom mounted to the camera.

Great video John! Can you please do a video using the Zoom on a iPhone X please. I’m confused on which patch cable to purchase

Glad I could I help!
I wonder if this will work with the zoom h1 essential. I just bought one
Mostly yes, don't know if H1 essential can send test signal
Learned something with the audio adjustments. Thanks!
Thank you John I wish more external mic videos were this straight foward man

The test -6db function is new to me. Thanks and great video.

Thank you John for this very detailed video !
Great video. I Just got a h1n. Thank you for the straight to the point, easy to understand video 🙏
thank you so much very helpfull.. the zoom is not as cumbersome and heavy on the front of the camera ..and easier to carry
What is the microphone you're actually using the record this video? I noticed that there was a drop in quality when you switched to the zoom/camera set to show how it would sound.
It was a GiantSquid lav mic: amzn.to/3EabQQB

Many thanks for this tutorial, especially the part where you explain how to calibrate to your camera using the test tone.
Hello, thank you for your video. What if I want to plug my headphones into the H1 as well?
You would need a splitter.
Or plug it to your camera's headphone jack, if you have one.
If you have the option would you choice this over the Rode Video mic? (would this be less directional? in compare to a shotgun mic option?) Thanks in advance

Yes, the set up would be the same.

Can I listen to the audio while recording? [With h1n jack because my camera doesn't have a 3.5 mm jack]
Yes
Very clear & thorough, thanks a lot!

I like the mic you are using while discussing the Zoom H1N. Its way better than the zoom.
Me too. The giantsquid lav is the best.
@@MotoTTZ what brand is this?
Does anyone knows how to adjust gain levels after that in order to avoid hiss and background noise?

it's a Giant Squid amzn.to/2WkhJYd

No dead cat was used on any of the mics.
how to do adr post dialogur recording using this h1n and premiere pro

Will zoom H1N work with DJI osmo pocket by mounting it on its extension rod??
Yes.

No.
