Nice video! I just bought one, looking for the accessories pack but is the foam windscreen better than a deadcat? And what is the size of the deadcat for the H1N? Thanks for share the tests 😍
Thanks appreciate the comment. So in my opinion I think the deadcat will be better because it just has more uses overall. Thanks. Great test. I am amazed how little self noise or amp noise you get even at gain 9. Most of the noise that might need removing isn't from the recorder itself but would be unwanted background noises. It may sound strange, but I am thinking of replacing the amazing but bulky and often too sensitive Sony PCM D100 with something more pocketable like the H1N which also would pick up fewer unwanted sounds from the surroundings.
@@JakeBorowski15 The D100 is by many considered the best field recorder ever made.Value-wise, the H1n is a lot better, especially now that the second-hand prices for the D100 have been going up after it was discontinued and they sometimes go for more than ten times that of an H1n.
Overall, would you recommend this mic for recording nature sounds? I want to record rain, thunderstorm, and stuff like that but it's just a hobby and I'm only getting started so don't wanna buy expensive equipment...
Oh absolutely! Honestly, I'd say this is probably one of your best options for a few reasons. One, it's a cheaper sound recorder/mic in the world of audio. Two, it's still a super high quality mic considering the price. And three, it's fairly simple to learn how to use it. Also, if you want to check it out, I have a link for the Zoom H1N in the description of that video. Hope that helps! Also, thanks for the comment!
Hey Jake, awesome video, for the 2:17 and 2:39 mic on camera tests, how far were you from the camera/mic? At around what distance from the mic would you say sound starts to not be so great?
For those two tests I wanna say I was around 15 to 20 feet away. Also, I don't think there's a certain distance when this mic starts to not be so great. You have a gain adjustment dial and you can turn it all the way up to 10. That'll give you a further distance that the mic will pick up audio, however, if you do raise it up to 10 you will notice a significant increase in the amount of noise. In my opinion this mic really shines in the 4-6 gain area. That's where you'll most likely want it set anyways if you plan on talking into it from a few inches to a couple of feet away. Hope that helps!
Very good video. Excellent test I recommend this accessory Movo SMM5-B Universal Microphone and Portable Recorder Shock Mount - Fits the Zoom H1n, H2n, H4n, H5, H6, Tascam DR-40x, DR-05x, DR-07x and others with a 1/4" Mounting Screw
Hi Jake! Thank you for this video. I'm looking for an audio recorder that also does the trick of recording an interview during a wedding party. What are your thoughts?
Best way would be to get some directional mics you can hook up to an external audio recorder but if you can't do that then maybe get two Zoom H1N's and hook up a Lavalier mic to them. That's what I'd do at least
Hey you are doing a great job. I just want to know how do I remove the WHITE NOISE? It's always there and I don't know how to remove that in any audio software. I just learnt to use Filmora 9. Can I do that in Filmora?
I'm not sure about removing it in Filmora, but I know some video editors have a de-noise tool. Also, there will always be a little bit of noise. You can't get rid of it completely, but another thing that could help you is raising the gain dial on the Zoom H1N to a number above 5. This is because there is a significant decrease in the amount of noise once you get over 5 on the gain dial. Other than that there isn't much more you can do. At least that I know of. Hope that helps!
Great video...I've 2 questions 1. where did you buy the dead cat? 2. Is the gain button (the 0-10 roll-able circular button) stiff enough not to be turned incidentally? thank you.
Thanks for the comment! So for the first question, I'm not exactly sure what deadcat it is. There isn't a brand name or anything on it I just remember that it was a package deal. I think I've heard of people getting the Movo deadcat though and that works good. Now as for the gain button, it's more of a dial and yes unfortunately you can accidentally bump it, but there is a lock button on the side and I think that will lock the setting a in place. Although I'm not entirely sure that it works for the gain dial. Hope that helps!
Great job on these comparisons. I have a question about the last feature you tested being the Gain in autolevel. If the user has no control over the gain while this feature is set to ON then does it disengage the wheel? The button lock feature does not work with the Gain Wheel. I'm wondering if putting the Autolevel to ON will it lock out the adjustment of the manual gain wheel?
Yes you're correct, turning on auto level will disengage the gain dial. That's because the zoom h1n is doing all the work for you and setting the gain automatically. I don't really recommend using this setting though because it tends to make the audio levels peak so you'll lose some detail in whatever you're recording. Hope that helps!
Hi!, really I like your video, one question, I need récord a orchestra outdoor, violins, piano, chellos, trumpets, etc, could I put this recorder in middle of The orchestra and record all the instruments? Thank you for your comments!
Yes I think you should be able to do that. You just have to make sure the gain isn't too high though because you may get some peaking. If that's a worry do a few audio checks if you can with the orchestra before the performance. Hope that helps!
Well if you're in a gym with lots of other people I'd say you should probably be using a lav mic connected to the zoom H1N. I wouldn't do much as far as settings other than set your gain correctly. But that lav mic should take care of a lot of the noise from other people and weights.
Good test but i have A question ! I just purchase this and am somewhat lost ?! I have this noisey neighbor and i need to record blunt sounds (Banging on walls, dog barking, door slamming etc.) What maybe the correct setting to capture all this ?! Please note my mic is hooked up to Hearing Boost (a app (google play store) that amplify s sound for deaf people) the recorded sound come out a bit distorted ??! Thanks
For settings I think it's best to set it to 48k 24bit, lo-cut filter to 80hz, leave the limiter off, and if you don't want to worry about setting the volume you could turn on the auto level function, but I don't recommend that. It's usually best to set the gain/level yourself and you can do this with the gain dial from 0 to 10. Just set this to whatever sounds best without peaking. Usually you want your gain to peak around -9dB. Hope that helps!
I'm pretty sure the closest deadcat you could get to mine is the Movo WS1. However, the handle I'm not sure what the name of that is or if they even make it anymore. I got that in a kit with the Zoom H1N so I don't even know where to find it.
Love the video! Very informative. Just a question, what settings would u recommend for recording voice audio inside a car that's turned on (for the ac lol) but not moving anywhere.
Thanks for the comment! If you're in the car with it on I'd say set the lo-cut filter to 80hz. That will cut out some of the car noise but your voice should still be heard pretty well. Other than that just set the gain to a setting where the mic doesn't peak and you should be good to go. Normally I set mine right around 6 or 7 for the gain. Hope that helps!
Great video mate... I think doesn't have to add something or make any extra questions...The only that I would like to ask is which brand is the dead cat that you use? I have seen that Zoom has one but out on the box write that's it's compatible with many Zoom models like H1 but doesn't write H1n...
The brand of deadcat I use on the Zoom H1N is a Movo branded one. I'm not exactly sure which one, but I think it might be called the Movo 2 or you could try searching for, "Movo deadcat for Zoom H1N"
Do you by chance know the brand of the deadcat? I’m looking for one that fits and sounds decent for my h1n and I was happy with the performance shown in this vid
I've gotten this question a lot, but I bought the Zoom H1N in a kit and they don't sell it anymore like that. The closest deadcat I can find is the movo 2 I believe it's called
Very good video thank you for the very informative content. I have just purchased one myself, I can't seem to get the same clarity of audio as you do. Whichever settings I use with a deadcat all my recordings have a lot of static, even inside. I'm thinking I may have bought a dud or I'm doing something very wrong, if you have the time your thoughts on the subject would be much appreciated, thanks again keep up the good work!
I'm not sure what your audio does sound like. I watched through some of your videos on your channel but the audio seems fine there. If you are using the Zoom H1N in those videos then I don't see a problem. However I will tell you the settings I use when shooting videos. When I'm outside I make sure that I have the lo-cut filter set to the lowest setting I think it's 80 Hertz. Then I make sure my gain isn't peaking and trying to get it around -12dB. Also make sure you always use the deadcat. That just makes a huge difference to me. I also make sure that I'm recording in WAV 24bit/48kHz. After that I just make sure I adjust the gain peaks in post to hit -9dB. That's all I do for my audio. I hope that helps!
Thanks for responding and in those videos I used a very cheap shotgun mic attached to a galaxy s10, I have only just purchased the h1n to improve my audio quality and haven't used it for content yet, the settings you mentioned are exactly what I have been trying to use. Even in low sound environments like your white noise section in this video, the background static is constant even with the lowest gain. After some more testing and your clarification of settings I'm sure now that I have a faulty device, thanks again for the help!
Sorry man I would've included a test with a lapel mic but I don't have one. I used to and I can tell you from experience that the quality that comes out of the Zoom H1N is still really great with a lapel. However do keep in mind it does also matter what lapel mic you have.
Hi Jake, thanks for the good examples! Was wondering the white noise/hissing sounds from the mic are removed during post-production? Or are there certain settings to adjust it on Zoom H1N mic itself. Appreciate it! :)
I mean that's basically what white noise is. It's kind of a hissing noise, but normally if your talking into the mic you shouldn't hear that noise at all. You'll really only hear the hissing if you turn the gain up really high which is rare unless you need white noise.
@@JakeBorowski15 I see, true that. I realised that the higher the gain, the more white noise you get. So ideally, would you reckon that in every situation, eg: recording nature sound, voiceover, instruments, should be set around 5-6 knob?
@@lydiachang17 I wouldn't say every situation because you'll just have to set it to whatever setting yields the best results. In some situations, yes 5 or 6 on the gain will be good, but other times maybe 4 or even 7 would work better. Those are just examples but do you understand?
What do you use the Zoom H1N for???
I am looking for solution to record video inside i.e talking videos. Plus primarily i want to use for ASMR in my cooking channel. Will it serve the purpose. Plus can i connect external microphones with this i.e rode NTGS etc?

Movo SMM5-B Universal Microphone and Portable Recorder Shock Mount - Fits the Zoom H1n, H2n, H4n, H5, H6, Tascam DR-40x, DR-05x, DR-07x and others with a 1/4" Mounting Screw
Never heard of that mic. I'll have to give it a look
really good video, man. thanks!
Thanks!
Great video man
Thank you!
Awesome mic tests!
Thank you!
Thanks for this! Gonna buy this if i have money
Glad I was able to help! If you have any other questions please let me know!
@@JakeBorowski15 thanks a lot for your answers. It's very helpful and clear. :)
nice thorough vid, thank you
Thank you!
@@JakeBorowski15 thank you very much jake! I appreciate your comments, good luck!
@@fabiancordova3794 thank you and good luck to you as well!
What settings would you recommend for Gym Settings >?
Hope that helps!
how do i get a set-up like that of yours Jake? the H1N deadcat and that small-like handle/pod?
@@JakeBorowski15 thanks a lot for answering... I will look for it
Do you by chance know the brand of the deadcat? I’m looking for one that fits and sounds decent for my h1n and I was happy with the performance shown in this vid
They discontinued that one but I've heard people like the Movo S2. I think that's what it's called
Great video! I was wondering if you have the product name or link to the deadcat you were using for this review? Thank you.
I've gotten this question a lot, but I bought the Zoom H1N in a kit and they don't sell it anymore like that. The closest deadcat I can find is the movo 2 I believe it's called
@@JakeBorowski15 awesome thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you for your leadership. This is wonderful information.
I'm glad you liked the video! Happy it helped!
can you link the handheld grip you're using in this video?
Sorry I bought this mic so long ago and it came in a kit. I don't even think they make it anymore
Great review! Thank you for your efforts!
You're welcome! Happy it helped.
no lapel mic? D":
Sorry man I would've included a test with a lapel mic but I don't have one. I used to and I can tell you from experience that the quality that comes out of the Zoom H1N is still really great with a lapel. However do keep in mind it does also matter what lapel mic you have.
I very like your video, very very funny i think, n your video very complex i guess, success for your channel bro
Thanks a lot!
really good review, thank you, I needed this!

Hello Jake, is it possible to use the h1 zoom connected to the phone in live broadcasts?
Hmm. I've never used it for that, but I'd imagine that it could. If you can though try to do some research on that because I'm really not sure.
Excellent. Well done and thank you!
Thank you for the comment!
Excellent video - very useful - Thank you.

Great test. Really helpful.
Thank you! I'm happy it helped!
@@JakeBorowski15 Gotcha! It takes experience, lots of trials and errors to get the sound right. Thanks again for the replies and stay safe :)
@@lydiachang17 thanks and you too!
Zoom should pay this guy for an all-around test!
