    To my ears the H3 Vr seems to be able to pick up the more delicate higher frequencies a lot better for a much more natural and balanced sound. The H2 sounds a little muffled. But, the difference is really so slight and you have to be actively listening for it.

    • @fosferus
      @fosferus 2 роки тому

      i agree, but i also noticed the H2N seems to more sensitive to the mid-lower frequencies. you can hear that the example around 6:20. there's missing low end information on the H3, the H2 sounds 'fuller' in that context.

    YEAH!!! yes, maybe the H3-VR sounds better in some frequency positions, but notice the difference in stereo capture! that's why the Zoom H2n is still the best tool for me, it can convincingly for its size capture the movement in the space literally amazingly, just listen to the cars crossing at the pedestrian crossing, it's a joy to watch the sound and image! and this will be appreciated not only by musicians but also by filmmakers!! thank you very much for the great work so that we can listen to these differences and thank you again, I am glad that I have a treasure for my work.

    I was already settled on getting the VR, since I specifically want to be able to record sounds coming from all directions (for music production, and eventually video game sound design), as well as needing the 96 kHz sample rate for clean timestretching, but thanks a lot for the examples!
    I also have a feeling the VR will be better for capturing reverb for convolution reverb in Ableton, since the reverberations in a tunnel/etc. will be coming from everywhere.

    Yeah, it looks like the built-in metal mesh around the capsules on the H2n adds another layer and helps that wind a bit. I've got an H3-VR and definitely had to get a dead cat because the capsules are just kind of out there and the foam only wasn't cutting it. Thank you for the shoot-out, I find this fascinating.

    Would love a demo on how to decode/matrix the B format Ambix to Binaural. Most stuff I see is talking about FB360 and other programs that I cant even find and are years old. Right now I am using Rodes plugin with Reaper and honestly I think the MS recording from the H2N sounds better than the Special Audio I am processing, and I wonder if thats because the plugin is really made more for the NT-SF1, plus the H2N is producing VERY low gain recordings for me in Spacial audio mode, again I hope because the plug I am using to convert to Binaural.
    Nevermind found the VST from Reference Audio, seems the same issue with very low volume compared to the MS recording, very basic but it works!

    Very good comparison video, exactly what I needed, thank you! What are your thoughts on using an array of two H2n mics (with one tilted 90deg for up+down) and merging/syncing the channels for a spherical sound field. This should perform better in terms of sound origin differentiation than a single H3VR, or am I wrong? (I still need to learn more ambisonic theory though)

    • @AlteraSound
      @AlteraSound  3 роки тому +1

      You could theoretically do this, it just won't translate directly to Ambisonics format. You'd need some sort of custom encoding solution. You can get second-order Ambisonics microphones that have eight capsules, so much better imaging, but they're also quite a bit more expensive.

    Great work man. really helpful. I have a workflow question. I am looking for flexibility meaning that I will be recorded music and nature ambient audio. Long story short I bought both recorders to see which best fits my needs. I will rarely do true 360 work so surround, stereo and mostly binaural is what I want. with the H3 the application letting you quick choose before export really makes me gravitate toward the H3, but the form-factor and less fragile nature of the h2 is what I prefer. So, here is my question. how are you covering the h2 audio file (that I am assuming you recorded in spacial?) quickly into binaural?

    • @AlteraSound
      @AlteraSound  3 роки тому +1

      Personally I use Reaper just because it has solid batch-processing capabilities. If you have the H2n in the Spatial Audio mode, it's recording in Ambisonics format. There's lots of plugins to decode it, but I use Google Resonance Audio Monitor, which is a free plugin that uses the same binaural processing as UA-cam VR.

    I’ll need to try listening from my PC with my better headset rather than my cheap BT one. I’m not hearing significant differences except maybe the water where the VR seems to have more of an under you sensation. They both at least sound worth their price tags.
    If you were going to compare indoor vs outdoor, do you think it would make a difference? I’m thinking with ceiling reflection the VR might get too much reverb.

    What’s the “front” of each of these recorders? For recording ambisonic audio, I’d guess it’s important for editing workflow to know how to face your recorder during recording. Is the LCD the “front” or the “back” for each of these units?

    • @AlteraSound
      @AlteraSound  3 роки тому

      On the H2n it depends what recording mode you're in, but for the Ambisonic mode the side opposite from the LCD is front. The H3-VR actually has a motion sensor and can adapt which side is the front based on the orientation, which will either be the top of the mic pointing away from the body, or the side of the recorder opposite the LCD screen. Regardless, one of the neat things about Ambisonics is you can use plugins to reorient the recording if you need to change the direction.

      H2n only has a stereo input, but either way I think it makes it much better as an interface since you can use external mics with it. The H3-VR really only makes sense as an interface if you're streaming VR audio.

    Hi, thanks for putting the demos together. It's always useful to hear comparisons.
    I was wondering if when put into software (I'm guessing the Waves Ambisonic plugins from quick research) if this can create more of an effect like some of the more famous binaural examples online where it feels like you're hearing sounds behind, like footsteps coming from behind would sound like they were on the left/right and slightly behind you (sorry I'm doing an awful job of explaining what I mean). I last did anything to do with 3D sound when I was at uni many years ago. Then I used (I think) Core Audio binaural mics and would put the binaural mics on a dummy head and use a DAT and have someone walk behind and it really sounded like someone was coming up behind you.
    The examples you posted didn't really sound very "3d" and what I remember from using binaural microphones. My headphones are a bit terrible today as I've only got some crappy ones laying around so I'll come back tomorrow and listen again as maybe it's me and I'm not hearing it. I was just wondering if any of the 3D spatial mics/production plugins actually manage to make it sound like how you would hear something in real life?
    Would you know if it's possible to use an external binaural microphone with either of the recorders you used? Sorry if that's a silly question, but would it be possible to use something like these binaural earbud mics with the field recorders? Could I record with external binaural and then take out the mic and record ambisonic/binaural via the field recorder itself?
    www.core-sound.com/shop/low-cost-binaural-cardioid
    There is an artist called Janet Cardiff who I really liked because my lecturer got us to go to her sound walk. I found the audio files online to hopefully explain what I mean a little, although even this isn't 100% what I mean, I guess the barber shop example that is famous is close enough

    • @AlteraSound
      @AlteraSound  2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately Ambisonics mics like this are not the best at creating a convincing binaural image like you describe. The main advantage of them is it's easy to convert the audio to a surround sound format, and you can easily rotate and manipulate the soundfield. Binaural mics are fantastic; the downside is they have a fixed perspective and the effect only works on headphones.
      The H2n does have a line input that you can use to record a stereo signal externally through a 3.5mm TRS plug, but you can't record using external and all four internal mics simultaneously. It's also not the best quality, so you might be better off with a more dedicated recorder for the binaural mic.
      If you want a really comprehensive book on the subject, I highly recommend "Immersive Sound: The Art and Science of Binaural and Multi-Channel Audio". It covers basically everything you might want to know about how 3D and spatial audio works.

      @@AlteraSound Thanks for the info, that's really helpful. Sorry I've only just seen your reply.
      Can I ask a follow-up question, please? You mention the dedicated ambisonic recorders offer more flexibility than a straight binaural recording. Is there an easy way to take a recording in the ambisonic format and make it sound like it's in a 3D space? Would it sound relatively convincing on headphones?
      Again, sorry if the questions are stupid, but the information I did find was really technical and it went over my head a bit and I want to try and avoid investing in the wrong recorder. I basically just want to be able to be able to layer sound effects and vocals and make it seem like they are coming from a specific direction.
      There was a game on the iphone/ipad a few years called Papa Sangre a few years back and they had a 3D audio engine that you could use for non commercial projects but I think that's offline now. I would just be interested to know if there's a relatively simple VST where I could layer FX easily and put them behind and to the left of the listener/in front and above to the right etc
      Sorry for waffling on anyway. Thanks once again for taking the time to reply, that was very kind and patient of you and also for putting the demo together in the first place. It's handy to know there are some potentially some relatively affordable options for this type of thing

    I just ordered a H3-VR, but I didn't realize that it doesn't have an audio input, until after I ordered it. I thought I would be able to plug things like a piezo contact or an electromagnetic sensor into it, and record, along with ambisonic recordings. It seems that most videos I found, are more tailored for using it alongside 360 VR video. I bought it strictly for audio purposes. I have a Zoom R24, which I haven't got a lot of use from yet, but I figured I could use it along with the H3 and get some interesting ambience, to use in my music production. I wish I could find more content, with people using the H3 for audio experiments. It kind of has me concerned that I bought a 1 trick pony, that's not really going to offer me anything special, when it comes to music production, without video or VR. I think it's dumb that they didn't add an audio input. It kind of makes me wish I would have saved some money, and just got the H2n.

    9:10 An experienced audio engineer may pick up on subtle differences when directly comparing the two devices. But the average listener likely wouldn't notice or care about any discrepancies in quality between them. Unless you're searching for flaws in highly specific scenarios, the end results will sound equally great to the everyday listener's ears.
    The pricier, newer gadget is overkill for most purposes. You'd be hard pressed to detect an actual improvement over the other device in real world usage. So don't feel compelled to splurge on the state of the art model - the slightly older one will still give you phenomenal performance for both recording and playback. Rest assured that either option will satisfy all but the most discerning audiophile ears.

    Just found your channel and really appreciate this video. The H3-VR is comparatively much hotter than the H2N because of the extra reflections and ambience from the ground... That said it's also WAAAAY more sensitive to wind noise.

    • @AlteraSound

    Binaural means having the microphones in human sized silicone ears, NOT ambisonic or any other sound. The whole concept relies on the fact that our outer ears (the visible part) play a role in hearing that is just as important as the intricate network of organs that is in the middle and inner ear. For example if a persons outer ears are amputated they will perceive sound in a much different way than a regular human would, since they are missing a crucial part of their auditory system. So microphones in ears = Binaural; no ears =/= Binaural. The two are different concepts. You can render all you want, but you will never get exact binaural.

    If I want to record walk tour with sometime talk behind the camcorder, my research so far show the possiblity is to capture some sort of stereo or surround sound and then record my voice dedicatedly, hence I thought to get Sennheiser MKE 440, and record with a shotgun mic with Deity HD-TX recorder attached facing backward but it will be big setup, is this H3-VR going to do it all in one include my voice but it will make my voice sound like talk behind the listeners instead of in middle of video which seem like more ideal? I also want to use on table top review video, daily use, record element sounds for game and music, my current plan is to get Sennheiser MKE 440 stereo shotgun, MKE 600 shotgun, Line Audio CM4 pencil condenser and Deity HD-TX recorder, should I add Zoom H3-VR or can be reduced or need to add more, is there better solutions for me? Is it possible to use one of the stereo shotgun mic as mono mic, ideal quality? Those binaural mics which point to both sides going to record front, back and my voice clearly?

    I have a question, is that possible to transform ambisonic audio captured with the H3-VR into a mono track without choose a specific directionality? The reason is that I am trying to capture audio in all direction but want to make it as fast as possible to deliver, hence in mono. I basically capture videos with a 360 camera which I transform into normal videos by reframing them. But the native audio quality of the camera is pretty bad so I would like to capture with an external mic without loosing the spatial capture.

      Ambisonics in B-Format has four channels; WXYZ, where W is an omnidirectional channel representing sound from all directions, so long story short you can use just the first channel as your mono channel.

    wouldn't the audio be different because the H2n was upside down and the tripod blocking some wind and it is not pointing the same direction?

    • @AlteraSound
      @AlteraSound  2 роки тому +1

      I did adjust the sound so that both mics had the same perspective. It is possible the tripod had a small affect on the wind sound, but in the most dramatic example the wind was coming from head-on, and I've found the H3-VR to be very wind-sensitive in a variety of conditions.

    For me, just none of these recorders sound anywhere near "3D". That is, the sound being located outside-the-head, like it is when recorded using a good dummy-head- or a real-head-recording. Both, however do deliver a nice stereo-sound. And that said, I would prefer the H2, over the H3-VR.

      You know what? My damn old Sony Z2 (2014) phone was able to record 3d binaural sound, with the included in-ear headphones. Back then I didn't fully realize just how cool that was. That 3d asmr hype came later. I recently booted that phone up again and out of curiousity I recorded some sounds and I have to be honest - the 3d aspect is awesome, considering the fact that this is an oldish smartphone. I even tried to mimic the "virtual barbershop" thing and got chills when I played it back lol.

    Right at the start there is a fairly major error in this video - the H2N has FIVE capsules, not four. [To quote the online Zoom brochure, "The H2n offers not one, not two, but five built-in microphones. Two of them are arranged as an X/Y pair, while the other three are configured in an MS ("Mid-Side") pattern."] This is how they get the MS format from it, directly, with a centre mic and a (pseudo) figure of eight mic derived from two sideways facing cardioids. This means that there's a mic that handles centre sounds bang on axis, whereas the H3-VR doesn't unless you turn it in such a way that one of the capsules points forwards. I think the tests in this video, and other videos, does show the advantage that the H2N has in locating centre sounds. Or, I'm kidding myself...
    Anyway... I'm a former classical music recording engineer and I'm dead fussy about stereo image. In these tests, personally I really found little obvious difference between the two, which really surprised me. I suspect Mr Average wouldn't have a problem with either. I've had the H2N for some years (and frankly I don't use it often, just because I have too many other options... so many small recorders...) but last night, having heard a music sample on Tapersection forums, I damn nearly ordered an H3-VR, but sat on my hand before it could click the "buy" button. Having heard this test here, in the context of my needs, I am glad I didn't buy it. Also, in another demo on YT of H3-VR audio, it did sound rather "hole in the middle" - lots of separation but nothing ever seemed to come from the centre. Anyway, what an excellent test this video is! Very nicely done, and gives plenty of food for thought.

    Hi. I have hard time to understand what is going on in ambisonic player meant for H3-VR. After watching this I am confused ua-cam.com/video/kIquru2hAH4/v-deo.html. If I have Ambix audio from this Mic and open in Zoom Ambisonic Player. I can choose Stereo Binaural 5.1 surroound and Custom LR. What and where is listening position? What does it mean in reality when I have simple stereo speaker setup? What these blue arrows really mean and they are at angle? What is stereo mode? I know binaural stereo is for headphones and it would be like placing binaural microphone in center of sphere. Stereo modes are mystery for me. How software render stereo mix from ambix audio? Why I hear all sounds in speakers even recorder below and above in this stereo mode? And big mystery is Custom LR. How it is relflected in speakers? I can adjust L R in random positions, they say these are channels.How the thing corresponds to real stereo speakers setup? Thank You if you willing to answer.
