  • Think of the Maxima as the up-scale Altima that you've been looking for. It's smaller than the big boys like the Taurus or Impala but has more style and more luxury features than the average Camcord as well.

    Alex, you are without a doubt the best car reviewer on UA-cam. It's incredibly evident that you have the knowledge and care that not everyone in your industry does. Your videos consistently provide detailed and unbiased information, and your ability to quickly and sensibly compare vehicles to others in their class is invaluable.
    Great work, thank you for the review.

    Just upgraded from my 2014 Maxima w/Sport package to a 17 SR. Omg I love it even more than my 14. It's lighter, smoother, and more technological advanced. I'm also the odd ball that likes my cvt

      That's mg dilemma right now. I love my 14 Maxima w/sport package, the handling is unmatched! But I want the newer Max mainly for the newer technology. How do you like the handling of the 8th gen max?

    WRONG! I used to work for Nissan it is NOT FAKE ENGINE NOISE! We worked with bose to make a direct microphone piped into the cabin. So the sound you hear is form YOUR ENGINE. but there was too much sound dampening to hear it nicely so we had to pipe it in.

      +Monkey D. Luffy Correct, for the M4, it's essentially an audio file being played over the speakers in ideal conditions. I thought that's what the Maxima was doing also.

    In the market for a 1-2 year old is350, or same year of q50. Now the maxima platinum is sneaking its way on the list. Hard to ignore the value of what you get for the price. Especially on one a couple years old. As a long term Altima 3.5 owner I’m not a cvt hater like so many, my Altima has been one of the lowest cost of ownership vehicles I’ve ever owned. Over 5 years and nothing but brakes, tires, battery, and a couple o2 sensors after putting on 90,000 city kms on it. Had 100k on it when I bought it.

      Yes, I did buy the car..I already finished one year now and can say that I very happy. Things that I am pleased are compliments that I used to get from people earlier (Now you have too many new Maxima on road) excellent acceleration, Smart Car application (available in Dubai) handling & interior. Things I don't like is the headroom limitation in rear middle seat, awkward hand brake (actually its on left foot) Blind spot & Seat memory that are not available on my SV trim which should have been given in a 124K priced car!! I kind of regret not buying the SR trim which is the top trim here in UAE

    To me this car is a sports car. And this is coming from a Corvette fanatic (anything prior to the C8) and my first car I learned to drive in was a 2005 Infiniti G35 sedan. But the maxima handles really well. I’ve hit some gnarly turns and the car just doesn’t exhibit body roll or ever feel sloppy or over worked. The car punched hard for “just 300” horsepower. The 3560 curb weight definitely helps. To me the car is a baby GTR that doesn’t get the big brothers tires, twin turbo setup, transmission, and brakes and tires setup. Lastly you don’t get most of the power going to the rear wheel via all wheel drive. But the maxima definitely gives y out a sporty handling car that isn’t harsh over the road. It’s a if you know you know type car that sadly keeps getting overlooked for much more mundane vehicles. But as a lover of Infiniti and Nissan. This car does me proud. 2017 SV model is what I drive now. And I’ve beaten some sports sedans like chargers RT and the like on some track roads. Lol 😆 😂

    Alex, thank you for your very detailed reviews. I live on a mountain in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Will the CVT allow me to gear down when descending some of the very steep grades
    on my way down to the valley floor? Mountain driving on a daily basis can take quite a toll on brakes ( I am sure you are well aware of this as you also live at elevation). Looking forward to your reply.

    Hi Alex! Great review as always! I'm torn between 3 vehicles for my next car. One is the Maxima. The other two are the Volvo S60 T5 Drive-E, and the Audi A3 2.0T. What's your take on those three cars?
    Ultimately I need a good highway cruiser vehicle. Something that is comfortable on long drives and gets good gas milage.

      I have a 2011 Nissan Maxima I bought new in 2010. I now have 140,000 miles on the Maxima with zero issues, same original battery still!
      I recently bought an Acura TLX Advanced package of the Maxima. I'm averaged 34 to 38 miles per gallon on the highway in the TLX. I like the look of the Maxima more but with huge discounts on the Acura TLX I couldn't resist! Plus, I still have my 2011 Maxima to cruise around in. One added benefit with Acura is the longer bumper to bumper warranty and Acura loaner cars if you do have a problem. I'd go with the Maxima or a TLX.

    Drove one and have to say that those disliking the CVT often come from CVTs on underpowered 4 bangers (including many of Nissans' own entries) . This V6 produces tons of silky power that you don't get the same effect just driving around normally.

    YES! Alex did a comprehensive review on the new Maxima SR. Great insight and my thoughts were pretty much similar. The CVT is not as bad as others like to make it and the styling is unique enough to be eye-catching, but not offensive. The interior quality is on-point with other cars & Alex picked up on the details brilliantly.
    Great review and thank you. BTW, the Blue Pearl color is one of the hardest color choices to find on dealer lots...had to get a brilliant silver one (for now).

    The problem I have with the Maxima is its pricing & size relative to Infiniti. The Q50 which comes pretty well equipped comes in only a couple thousand more than the Maxima, yet it has more power, RWD and a 7spd gearbox. The Maxima has more features for the $, but I take a more responsive & high grade chassis over electronic toys anyday.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 8 років тому

      Patrick Wheaton
      The 'old' Q50 with the 3.7 V6 already has a ~30hp power advantage & has RWD which means traction is a non-issue. There's a reason why not many FWD cars pushing ~300hp exist; torque steer & steering feel. RWD will ALWAYS launch better than FWD especially when dealing with that much power. I haven't driven this iteration of the Maxima but I did other FWD V6 midsize sedans. Either your car tested is defective or you haven't driven too many premium RWD cars like the C300, 328i, IS350, ATS and Q50. The feeling is VERY different.
      What you feel is weight; Q50 is heavier than Maxima, but go into corner at ~40mph and Infiniti grips, the Nissan squeals tires. That's difference between FWD mainstream sedan vs. premium RWD sport sedan.
      If you want to save fuel $, get the Q50 Hybrid; 360hp with Civic-level fuel consumption. The Maxima isn't exactly what I call good on gas either.
      However the Q50 gets a mid-cycle refresh and the new 3.0 V6 twin turbo with 400hp kills everything except much more expensive BMW M3 and C63 AMG. Even the 'mild' 300hp version now has significantly more torque & thanks to turbocharging now beats the Maxima 3.5 V6 in fuel economy. The difference in price remains small. Why would you go for Maxima unless you are loyal to Nissan? (or maybe get awesome lease deal because nobody buys them?)

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 8 років тому

      Oddly enough however, I would actually now start to rate this HIGHER than things like the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA. Outrageously the Germans actually charge about the same for their compact FWD entry-luxury vehicles but I find the Maxima to be better built than either car interior-wise & completely wastes them with the standard 3.5 V6. It isn't until you get to the ~$50k+ Audi S3 & Mercedes CLA45 AMG that they truly shine, but at that point it be smarter, again, to pick the Q50S Red Sport.
      If anyone wants to consider those small German car but dislike their compact size and do not particularly care much about the badge, I would actually recommend looking at this car.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 8 років тому

      Patrick Wheaton
      Fair enough. For a city commuter that still has some 'go', I think the Maxima is quite good. It just isn't a "sport sedan" that Nissan keeps desperately claims it is.

  • @TheGobinG
    @TheGobinG 8 років тому

    Just because it has a CVT doesn't mean Paddle Shifters are pointless. Sure it defeats the main advantage of a CVT (Keeping the car in its optimum power band) but allows you to engine-break and "down-shift" for more acceleration. I found it rather fun in the 2015 Subaru WRX.

    While I'm not a fan of Nissan, I really can't see myself paying extra foa Maxima over a loaded Altima with the largest engine. I would feel kind of ho-hum either way, so why not save a bunch of money and get the Altima?

    The Altima has more interior space interesting also enthusiasts says this is bigger than the TLX.

    I'll take the Maxima over pretty much any SUV or crossover any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

    While Im not a fan of the CVT...I do understand why Nissan keeps using it in their cars. They want to give the majority of their consumers everything they want in a family car. Style, comfort, and great fuel economy.
    And although many ppl find this to be the biggest reason why its not the ideal sports car you can not deny their consistency. Tbh, most ppl who have an issue with this car are Car Enthusiast/Guru's lol. Remember folks like almost everything else in this country, you have other options😂

    Last week, I saw a 2017 Maxima in a parking lot. And I wanted to hump it! I love the design. I decided right then and there that I was gonna get one. Sorta. The only hang up is that it requires premium gas (yeah, I know, "premium gas is a scam". But, all my research tells me that the Maxima does require it).
    I'm hoping the test drive is enough to convince me.

    I disagree with your rating on the Acceleration and Braking...Maybe if you used the paddle shifters..you'll improve the acceleration.
    Now for braking..if you are a heavy breaker..you'll hate the ABS braking systems in the Nissan.

    Why oh Why Did Nissan only put 1 power port in the tiny awkward center console storage? Most vehicle's have one in the dash
    storage console too.....so stupid.

    For this car to be a real 4DSC, it MUST have a 6-Speed manual gearbox....

    I saw one rolling down the street today... all I can say is that I laughed. The front just kills it. That being said, the interior looks class-competitive.

    Jacked up the exterior. Definitely trying to hard to be sporty/stylish. Sales dropped over 20% last year because of it. Strangely, the 2015 Toyota Avalon drives like you'd think the Maxima would drive, except it is much more tastefully styled, inside and out. The 2016 Avalon was adjusted to soften the ride.

      September 2016 Maxima ranked third in large vehicle sales nationally with 6,569 sales for the month. Avalon was 5th with 3,844 sales. In fact, for the entire year Avalon never beat Maxima in sales for any month. In July 2016 Maxima actually sold the most in the large vehicle category. Avalon was 5th in that month. So I guess Maxima made up that 20% this year, huh? Let's sum up: Avalon drives better than Maxima. Avalon is more tastefully styled inside and out. Yet Avalon can't match Maxima in sales. Seems like the general large car buying public has a different opinion of Maxima vs. Avalon.

    • @EvanderSmart
      @EvanderSmart 7 років тому

      Stevie G That's fine, but this would be the first time Maxima has beaten Avalon in sales in a few years. Can it keep that up? The novelty will wear off in the next year or two, and the Avalon will be redesigned in a couple of years, and the world will return to normal.
