  • Nissan's Maxima has a great V6 engine, engaging handling, comfortable seats and it's well priced. Trouble is, it's not actually bigger than an Altima, nor does it necessarily feel more premium than an Altima. So why not buy an Altima? Let's see if we can find out.

    Hey guys, I know, I know. It's Camry V6 and Accord 2.0T, but you try keeping all of these details right in your head. LOL Somehow the pros and cons got deleted on the Avalon. The main pros for the Avalon are available AWD and the available hybrid system.

    I bought my Maxima in January 2016 so it is basically the same car. I got the Platinum version and at the time it offered all of the safety tech of the Toyota Avalon at a better price so I looked at it. When I got in, the steering wheel electrically moved into place which I haven't seen on a car without a luxury name plate. In addition, the balance is excellent in winter driving and I have not needed 4WD and live in Wisconsin. I drive it all winter and only needed to miss 3 days in the last 4 years due to snow. It gets excellent gas mileage, handily beating the EPA estimates and get 33 Hwy sometimes. Not bad for an engine that reminds me it has 300 hp when I step on the accelerator. The fit and finish are excellent and the memory seats move back when it is time for egress so it is easier to get in and out of. For me, the seats were more comfortable than the Avalon's or the Altima's. As for ride, there is a bump dampening system that applies brakes to the front as the rear wheels hit them so overall it is one of the smoothest rides I have ridden in. I owned Avalons from the 2005 and 2012 vintages and would have continued with the 2016 but found that Avalon rough in comparison to the Maxima. For me, the ride is as compliant as my old Avalons but feels more planted and evenly weighted. I don't notice the CVT in normal use and overall, I have enjoyed this Maxima more than any care I have ever owned.

    Alex - I can't disagree we you more. My wife drives a 2019 Altima and I have a Maxima Platinum. There is no comparsion. The Maxima handles and rides much better.
    Also I love the CVT in the Maxima. No hunting for gears as most automatics do. Since its continuous its smooth as slik as far as I am concerned
    I have Maxima'z since 1995 the lates one is the best. There is nothing wrong with the interior as the cockpit style is great and very comfortable. Long trips are great.
    I say it again there is no comparison with the Altima period.

      I really fail to understand why people complain about driving something with a CVT in it. You SERIOUSLY rarely feel any difference most of the time...unless you're driving like a maniac. Even then Nissan designed their CVTs with D-step tuning for a reason, they "mimic gears" at higher rpms. They don't even drone and scream like they used to. Sure, it's not true gears you're hearing but at least it not a constant 6,500 rpm whine either... Seriously, go watch a 0-60 run in a 2007 maxima--HUGE difference.

    Alex nailed it. The "mid size" sedans are so competitive they have to get the best features and benefit from much higher volumes, so the larger sedans have little incremental benefit. Worse, people who want truly big get an SUV. Charger & 300 have a sales advantage because there is no obvious FCA mid size sedan to compete with them. Acura, Cadillac, Buick and Ford have all downsized their largest sedans and there may be more that follow.

      those early 90s 4DSCs were great. I miss that night/day changing speedometer (black writing on silverishwhite in sun, white writing on black background at night). That V6 was so silkly smooth. I was young 20s driving my dad's 4DSC (either 1992 or 1994, can't recall) and you got to 80 and didn't even realize it. Nowadays thats more common with quiet, powerful sedans, but in the early 90s, no other mainstream sedan compared to the Nissan Maxima V6 4DSC...and it was a smooth MANUAL that my dad had. What a great car. It even had a BOSE stereo, when back in that time most factory radios were pretty bad. Granted BOSE isn't top of line, and today somewhat faux sound (too much alteration from true sound), but back then it was a such a great radio compared to other sedans.
      From a 1992 Maxima SE review I found
      "The instruments are unique. During the day the faces of the speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauge are white with black numbers. They reverse at night and are easily read."
      "The Maxima SE is EPA-rated at 26 miles per gallon in highway driving and 21 mpg in the city. On a trip to West Palm Beach, the test car delivered nearly 29 mpg; in town, using the air conditioner, I got 23 mpg of regular unleaded.
      "
      "The Maxima SE suffers from none of the maladies common to many high-performance front-wheel-drive cars. There’s no trace of torque steer, a slight pulling to the left or right when accelerating. Even under heavy acceleration, the front wheels pull straight."

      Dakota Daniel In 2019 Nissan sold 35,076 Maximas, FCA sold 96,935 Chargers, GM sold 44,978 Impalas, and Toyota sold 27,767 Avalons, so it’s not like Nissan was the leader in its class. With the cancellation of the Taurus and Impala and failure of the Cadenza, Maxima is one of very few choices, but it’s likely that those departures will benefit Toyota more, with its AWD and hybrid options.

    Another great review Alex! I actually went with the Cadenza after doing this exact cross shop between Maxima-Altima-Cadenza-Buick. At the end of the day it was the 8-speed auto and the 10 yr warranty that sold the Cadenza for me, also getting it almost 9k below sticker helped...That's the thing about all of these "near-full size" near-luxury sedans, they're just sitting on dealer lots, burning dealer pockets. So if you do manage to find one these out on a lot, you're going to be limited in terms of trim level and options (e.x. I couldn't opt for the highest trim Cadenza and had to settle with the technology trim just because the only dealer that had a limited trim was almost 500 miles away and I'm in the greater Chicago area...so go figures how hard it'd be to find in smaller car markets? But the Cadenza I bought was 2019 pre-refresh model so it had probably already sat on the dealer lot for a good 12 months when I picked it up. The same was true for the maxima I was cross shopping.) So these main stream car manufacturers are going to need a lot of convincing before they'll put out a true full size near luxury sedan because of the cost of R&D and the probability that the dealers will just buy one for their showroom. Speaking of which, Kia's K900 seems to fit that bill exactly. All of the ones available in my market are 2019 models and some even have a few thousand miles on them because the dealer can't move them so they all became dealer daily cars.

    Nissan has had an identity crisis between the Altima and Maxima since 2009. The Altima has always been within 5% of the size of the Maxima and offered most of its features. The only major difference this time is the Altima went with a turbo 4 vs continuing with the ubiquitous VQ. Nissan should have developed the Maxima into a niche vehicle similar to the Stinger w/ RWD but not really a "luxury" car(to protect the Q50), but more of a true Charger competitor. The Altima is a really good car which really makes the current Maxima obsolete.

  • @Noah-ui1iu

    Definitely agree with a lot of your statements. I've driven the Avalon and Maxima in my company fleet. I still think I prefer the Maxima. Every time I take one home, people always look and notice it on the road in the midst of all the Chevy Equinox's and other boring crossovers. I like the coziness of the interior, I wish the infotainment display had better resolution, and even though it is fast and enjoy putting my foot down, the CVT after a while just kinda makes it a little boring. Shifting to the 2nd simulated gear than putting your foot down though really lets you feel the acceleration power of it and it is good. I've not driven a top trim Avalon Touring, only the XLE and I'm not a fan of the gear spacing in the 8 speed. Second gear takes a huge dip in RPM and really slows acceleration after that. I hope they do not discontinue the Maxima though. If they just gave it a traditional automatic, AWD, a better res and faster infotainment screen, and a bit more room in the back and trunk, I think that would do wonders for the sales.

    I think one of the biggest issues with the whole Altima/Maxima is their staggered redesigned cycles. There's always a period of time where the Altima is fresher than the Maxima... and we're currently in that window where we are comparing a refreshed Maxima to an all new Altima. Even still, I think the Maxima, overall, just offers a relatively more premium experience. From my experience, the Maxima just seems more substantial, for example, the Maxima's door seals are very wide and made the car more tank like. Also there is no reduction in materials quality in the rear of the Maxima (which is something new to the Altima with this gen). The Maxima just lacks in features at the moment because it's a gen behind the Altima.

    Hey Alex, I'd love to get your opinion on the Maxima as a used car. I bought a 2017 Maxima SL new back in 2016, and I think it's been a great overall car, and a huge addition with apple car play if you have an iPhone. There was no Android Auto on the 2017 Max.
    I have 67,000 miles, and i honestly love this car and I absolutely recommend it as a used car purchase. It's a great overall car, amazing gas mileage (I get on average 26mpg, and the highest I've had is 33 for highway) for a v6.
    I'm not lying to myself and saying its a true sports car, but its a great car overall and would recommend to anyone on the used market.
    However, everyone bashes the CVT and I honestly think most people have an opinion without ever having the opportunity to drive this car. Would you recommend this car used? Also what's your opinions about the CVT overall reliability on the Maxima? I've never had issues with mine, and I believe the CVT in the Maxima is different than the one in the older rogue/sentras

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 4 роки тому +2

      FamousWithoutBrad The CVT problem is less pronounced with the Maxima, but considering it still has the problems and that CVTs are almost always impossible to repair, buying a used Maxima is a poor proposition. That’s not even considering that many are simply abused because of their 300hp engines.
      You’re better off buying one new or freshly off-lease and changing the CVT fluid every 30k miles while babying it.

    • @gabevillarreal96
      @gabevillarreal96 4 роки тому

      I owned an altima 3.5SE with the CVT from brand new for 7 years and 117k miles on it. I loved the V6 and CVT. The v6 was amazing once it was warm. When it was ice cold it sounded like a tractor motor very unrefined and rough but once it got warm it was as smooth as silk and the cvt worked perfectly with it. I do recommend servicing your cvt at the recommended intervals but I believe as long as you don't abuse it and maintain it that it will last a good long while. You have a 2017 and a lot of the problems from the Jatco cvts were from the early models. Nissan has had plenty of time to re-engineer the transmission and work out all the bugs. I think you are safe like I said as long as you keep the vehicle serviced meticulously. I would not hesitate to buy one of that model year or newer. They are well made. At least that was my experience with that motor and cvt combo. And your 2017 has the newly updated V6 with over 60% new parts. Its said to be a lot smoother and a lot more refined!

      me too, in fact Nissan makes me sad. They had a nice nitch in late 80s and early 90s...they devolved into odd looking, bulbous designs, crappiest transmissions on the planet and fugly interiors. The interiors have gotten better, at least compared to others that keep getting worse. Suburu is terrible now, Toyota has that ugly swoopy look, reminds me of Ford when it went OVAL crazy (or was it female focused unmanly crazy)?
      Ghosn REALLY did them in...and I suppose the CEO before him as well. They took a mainstream turn for the worse in mid to late 90s.
      They REALLY need to go back to basics and go after the younger, sporty crowd but with buttoned down looks not painful, clown-show looks. The Murano I tested looked like a normal SUV/CUV that had been stung by 1000 hornets. FUGLY. NICE front seats, but that was about all I liked...besides the salesman offering more than 10k off the price. They can't give Nissans away these days. DO NOT PAY anything close to full price on one, you should get it for 75% of sticker price, no matter the model.

    Great review!
    I disagree with your CVT complaint. I know you're not a big fan, but there's nothing worse than an automatic car that has a delay when using the paddles. The CVT has an instant response, similar to a DCT without the crispness. Take an Accord or an Acura. Using those paddles are awful! There's a noticable delay. So until those transmissions start shifting manually like they have a purpose, I'd rather have the CVT than a conventional auto.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 4 роки тому +1

      You do know that those paddle shifters do nothing on a CVT right? What you are sensing when actuating them is "simulated shifting". Basically the engine computer simulating the revs of a typical automatic transmission. The CVT keeps the engine in an agreeable powerband as much as possible. That means very minute drops in RPM when under load.
      Also, try the paddles on a ZF unit like those found in BMW, or Audi, and other German brands. I assure you there is no hunting, or delay in power delivery. Don't even get me started on a dual clutch, *which is what this Max should have come standard with*

Maybe 4k or so went to rental fleets, but likely closer to 2k. The three majors buy some basic trims. The discount rental companies don’t. They’re still running older Tauruses and Impalas. The Maxima is pointless in its current form. Nissan has long billed the Maxima as a four door sports car, but in reality it's just a V6 Altima. It is destined to die an unceremonious death whenever Nissan decides to retire the current generation.
    It still has a purpose in the lineup and can therefore be saved if Nissan is willing to make the investments necessary for it. They need to make it an actual four door sports car. Z-Car inspired styling, more sport-tuned suspension, RWD/AWD, V6, liftback, nix the CVT in favor of a DCT or Manual. Basically make it a competitor to the Kia Stinger. If necessary, ditch the Q60 and let the Maxima cannibalize that car's sales. At the same time, raise the price, lower the production volume, and let the higher-end Altima gobble up some of the Maxima's lower end sales. Make it unique and exclusive, and it will have a place in the lineup. Maybe not a volume-seller (Anything not an SUV won't be), but it will be a (limited) success.

Nissan needs to address the reliability of those Jatco CVTs to stay in business. So many of us have grown up loving Nissan but it seems like they have lost their way.

    Sales numbers aren't that cut and dry Chargers and Maximas have way more fleet sales than Avalons. FCA is also among the lowest (if not the lowest) rated auto brands in reliability, so they sell their jank cars for super cheap.
    Same goes for Nissan when it comes to Japanese cars. Not known for reliability, and sold at deep discounts compared to Toyota.
    You get what you pay for.

      @Bjorn Ironsides Had a 1988 Maxima up until 2017. Would've still had it, if it hadn't got t-boned.
