The 3800 mah battery I bought a couple weeks ago had a usb cord that goes right in the jack in the battery instead of the base charger. Works well.
Yeah I picked one of those up as well those are pretty awesome it's kind of nice not to have to carry that cradle around really opens the door for charging options I like it
I have been a ham for a couple of years and I started with the uv5r . At this time I have five or ten of them . They are like rabbits. Most of them are all not the same . Not long ago I got the triband. I like it . I do not hack them up . I just add things you can buy legally. I even have it setup to talk on one while riding on my motorcycle. .It is a cool setup.
Very helpful recommendations I’ll add to my radio eventually. I just bought the UV-5R w/ extended battery & stock microphone just to sit in my truck mostly.

I already have an older dual band. I got the Baofeng dirt cheap just to have 220 MHz. ability. Mine is not messed with as far as pirate frequencies and stuff. I use it more than my Icom radios now anyway. The only out of band stuff I have tried is receiving that Navy zombie sat that Brazilians use on around 250 MHz. Just to be amazed I could hear it with a whip antenna, not the short ones too well.
I have 6 of the Luiton na-771 antennas and 3 nagoyas. The Luiton antennas work just as well as the nagoya and are slightly cheaper. I recommend the nagoya but in a pinch, Luiton is the next one I would recommend

Bad advice use the Uv5R as your primary radio and use it with GMRS and MURS because they are great radios
In an shtf scenario is what I'm referring to one radio that will save your life that can transmit on many frequencies at that point if my life is in danger or someone else's life is in danger and there's no other option I don't give a crap about the rules and I don't care about anybody else thinks about it. No they are not the best primary radio absolutely not. But in this case I think they will do the job just fine
With a UV5R you can charge in your pack on the go because theres a charge port to usb. That makes it a perfect SHTF radio and these other expensive radios lack that feature.

Anything is legal until you get caught. I would not do it and I hate it when people do it . In the US . There is not Jail for it . Try looking up going to prison for it . Nope . . They. Are not Radio COPS . Use your head . Be safe .
