Here are a few radios i've used over the years in the shack and portable use. You can find all kinds of older scanner radios available on ebay. Just look for the ones that are in the best condition. It's a great way to start your own listening station or hamshack for either hobby or emergency use. You probably will want to check out radio reference for the frequencies to use for your local area...

The H8 can just feels like a better radio. Great audio speaker and transmit audio. The H3 however does have more frequencies such as AM receive. I would say get both. The H3 is only 30 bucks. So it's not gonna break the bank. If you're going to use the radios to try and reach repeaters definitely get the H8. This would actually be a good video to do. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. @@wheelersecuritygroup the only reason I would get the H3 really is to pair it with the small stubbie tidradio antenna and you have something that will fit in your pocket but it's only good for much closer communication. I think the Wouxun is a good radio. I also think there are other considerations to think about for true SHTF. One is quality and toughness. You won't be able to easily replace them. Water proof may not be important to you, but to others, especially in SHTF should be something to think about. Having a radio that goes very low in power will be major in SHTF. You want the smallest RF footprint that will enable your comms. In most cases, a 5 watt radio will talk as far as a 10 watt radio when dealing with line of sight. You don't want to be DF'd or have your conversations heard by others. Scan speed could also be something that could be important, scan banks and a wide range of scanning frequencies to be able to spot others in your area (Most Chi-Com radios have scanning speeds that is like watching grass grow). There really aren't any Chi-Com radios that fit this bill. The Yaesu VX-6, FT-5D and FT-60 meet my requirements. The FT-60 is not truly waterproof, but will take a hard rain. Also having digital in the FT-5D can give you more obscurity. Not trying to throw shade at your choices, only trying to bring up some points that could be important when the grid goes down and we are in full mad max for the long run. Regional, shorter term SHTF events don't have the same requirements as full on SHTF and other choices may be just fine in those cases (although as we have seen from the storms, waterproof would be a bonus).

    • @northmanproject4007
      @northmanproject4007 День тому

      @@johnk23705 thanks for the reply and input. Yes I think something very important is the type of shtf scenario. I think that rather than being low-key and stealth I wouldn't be transmitting at all on an HT I would use something like mesh tastic instead. If it's that type of full on shtf. Mainly what I'm referring to is when I have to save my life I want more power to get out there if I need it and I want something that has a capability of multi bands and being able to charge that radio in multiple ways. Also I don't think passing out $260 radios to everyone is really feasible. But like I said it's an interesting conversation and there are so many facets is almost impossible to come to a conclusion people should just take what they can from everyone's opinion and apply it to what they think is best. 🤙

    • @johnk23705
      @johnk23705 День тому

      @@northmanproject4007 I agree with your take on my comment. One has to access the level of SHTF they are preparing for and the threat level. Like you, I have a multi layered plan for comms in a high threat level SHTF. Everything from hand signals, runners, meshtastic, HT's, AES 256 encrypted radios, beam antennas, Base and mobile VHF/UHF, SDR, and HF NVIS. A robust solar charging system (and small portable charging systems) with portable batteries rounds out the kit. I also have cheap hand out radios in addition to my quality radios. I take it further than most. The important thing is to have a radio and practice with it ! SHTF comms is a deep subject that would take many videos to unpack. When the threat level is high, the ability to listen to the most spectrum will be more important than talking unless it's necessary to do so. If the waters rising and you need help, the radio with the most power and best antenna will be your best friend.

So I'd especially stay away from certain sites to purchase. As far as an external antenna. Yes to an extent. Performance will vary but the more antenna and the higher usually brings better performance. If you want to use a magnet mount antenna on top of the car or if you use an external base station antenna yes you will increase performance greatly. @@ProjectChimera-46 well the only thing that is a problem with it is that it has spurious emissions otherwise it works well. That's a whole subject to look into to learn about. There are a lot of radios that have spurious emissions. It just means it's less efficient and it transmits on harmonic frequencies off of the fundamental frequency. It's worth looking into if not just have fun and enjoy it it will work just fine. Some people don't like that because it potentially can cause interference on other frequencies.

    • @DavidAnthonyAlbert
      @DavidAnthonyAlbert Місяць тому

      First: you need a ham (amateur) license to transmit on the frequencies used by the UV-25. When people say these radios are trash, it is because when you transmit with the UV25 (and many other Baofeng radios) your transmissions appear not just on the frequency you set them for, but also on multiples of that frequency because the radios lack proper filtering. Those unwanted transmissions (called "spurious" or "spurs") are illegal - they violate the FCC rules that govern ham radio transmission. Some of those spurs can fall in the frequency bands used by first responders and others. The first practical implication of this is that you risk fines and losing your license by transmitting with spurs. A more serious implication is that you can interfere with others' radio communications, some of which may be important: police, fire, EMT, etc. When anyone raises this, inevitably they are assailed by trolls who argue that you're unlikely to be found out; I'm shocked how many people will freely and publicly state that they lack ethics and civic responsibility. Those folks likely also don't care about the (even larger) problem: that they will ultimately ruin ham radio for everyone by doing this: if the FCC concludes that ham operators won't self-police, they will simply re-allocate that very valuable spectrum for commercial use.

      @@northmanproject4007 UV-5R. Tried it out today. On setting 4 (which I set to 40), it was fairly quiet, did not hear any static until I was driving near a military base. Forgot it was on! Before up in the mountains, it would constantly have static. Default on my radio VHF 30(9) and UHF 24(9).

    I have a question for a broader audience: Does this radio get overloaded/desensed in urban areas? That's a chronic problem with where I live. Particularly with direct conversion radios, which I believe this one is. I have neighbors with computers, phones, chargers, microwaves, etc. A single bad USB charger can block RX on the entire floor. There are also a few nearby TV and FM radio towers. Baofeng-like radios are just deaf around here. I know that with proper front-end filtering such radios can be good. Any experience with this one?

    Thank you for the review! I really like this radio. I use rechargeable batteries, either Energizer or Ladda from Ikea - always have some on hand. Same antenna. I programmed mine by hand. It is stunning how fast this thing can go through your custom or preset banks. Flies through all GMRS and MURS channels in under s second. A little longer for ham frequencies. Airband reception is excellent. I can hear all tower/dept/arr traffic at my local airport. Did I mention airshows. Definitely a must-have. If I could mention two more must-haves (analog), here they are: Quansheng UV-K5/6 (can't beat it for PL tone scanning, saving, waterfall), and a Wouxun UV9 series radio (can't beat it for RX sensitivity and selectivity). I wish someone had told me this earlier without me having to shell out big $$$ on trial and error.

      @@SK-rj1ti thanks for the great comment I appreciate that and yes this little radio really Burns through batteries so rechargeables are a must. But it's an excellent little radio. I also have three Quan shanks and several Wouxun radios. UV 8 and 9. Those are good little radios as well. But as far as scanning this one's hard to beat for the price.

    I have several HT's as a many operators do. That having been said the UV17 pro is my new favorite handheld, the uv9r plus was my goto solid as a brick . Still carry it in commo bag, but the uv17r pro is a lot of radio for the price and one of the best baofeng HT's for the money. My new daily carry for sure.

    I'm part of a neighborhood CERT group so I buy up old polcoe scanners to give out to members of the group to use in emergencies and I have a handful of the old 10 channel pro-38 type scanners that I've been repairing and maintaining over the years. I use them quite often actually as state police where I live still used analog. That and the analog state and federal interop freqencies are what I program into the older scanners. Tandy, the leather company, actually made police scanners back in the day (on one of the scanners in your video you can see "Tandy corporation" on the bottom) and in fact they made the Tandy 1000, one of the very first PCs.

    I miss my old Pro 2026. Had that resistor you could clip. Received everything! Hope to find another one one day. Came in handy for MilAir, even somehow consumer FM radio and clear channel TV. Also, Railroads. (CSX in Cumberland MD for me). And oddly enough my Comcast cable. After 40 years, fun times! Older ones are highly recommended for non Emergency services. Then you don't have to clog up your expensive Trunk-Tracker with static frequencies either. I also use my WS1040 (what is that in Radio Shack nonmenclature?) as a dedicated Weather Alert radio. Edit: The long-pin RCA to rg-259 should be pretty easy to find on Amazon. They have a pretty cheap selection of adapters and antennas at just below pro quality. I can recommend some brands if anyone needs them. Radio Reference is a must. You can join for free and find almost any frequency and state in the Union. Paid membership is only really needed if you program digitals like I do. (But I'm sure they appreciate the support if you want to help). Also gets you access to Broadcastify. So there's that. Nice rig Northman! 💯
