    My dual band base station is a 10w HT connected to a mobile antenna on a cookie sheet. I can open repeaters up to 15 miles away. Awesome info as always. Thanks!

    To get the most out of any handie-talkie, accessories are just about an absolute must. A DC power cable, mic/speaker, headset, case, battery case, spare rechargeable battery packs, replacement for stock antenna, and connectors/adapters to allow use of an external antenna, programming software and cable are all options which I try to have available for all my HTs.

    One of the most useful accessories I've found for any handie-talkie is a "battery case" (or whatever each different manufacturer might call it). It's an empty case which allows you to use (usually) AA batteries instead of a rechargeable battery pack. These are really useful if you find your HT batteries are not charged or if you "run out of juice" while you're in the field. You can always find alkaline batteries for sale just about anywhere.

      Notarubicon says those dont make a very good connection sometimes , and your radio will turn on and off while using it.

    I’ve ordered this week the same length of 16 feet + hook N9trax slim Jim.
    Joe is a very nice guy who makes them.
    Instead of choosing a SMA female connection for my baofengs, In the end I opted for BNC male connection . For the simple reason it’s versatile with quick release.
    I already have a couple of SMA BNC female connectors.
    I just need a Pl259 with BNC female connector for future portable and mobile stations.

      Yup, he is a nice guy. I met him years ago in the flea market at the Dayton Hamvention. He custom-made an antenna for me while we chatted. Pretty good performance for what it is and for the price.
      I also prefer the BNC connectors as they are appear to be sturdier mechanically and to have been designed with more connect-disconnect cycles in mind compared to the SMA type connectors.

    The phone stand is an awesome idea. I'm planning on getting a slim Jim or two. I only found his site the other day.🍻🤠

    When plugged into the wall or external battery, the Baofeng gets terrible reception

    The best upgrade I've found with my baofeng is attaching a mag mount mobile 2m/70cm antenna . Really allowed me to get out there

    If you wanna gover the top with your uv5r, Btech makes an amplifier, AMP-25. Puts out up to 40w so would make it a real great base station addition.

      @@simonjester100584 yeah. It would be nice if they had a multi band amplifier. I have the 2m amp and dont really feel I need a 70cm amps I do most of my local chatting on 2m.

    Do You Know Where To Buy An EXTENDED Or New battery For Baofeng S5r Plus ?

  • @444DG

    When I use the USB charging cables with the extended batteries reception is absolutely horrible and sometimes non-existent while charging. This happens with multiple chargers and Baofengs. Have you had this problem?

    • @northmanproject4007
      @northmanproject4007  Рік тому +2

      That's interesting. To be honest I don't usually use the radio once it's charging. I guess it's just a personal preference or habit ni just grab another radio. But having said that I'm not really sure why that would be the case. Must just be some sort of electrical interference while charging. Obviously I don't know what to suggest offhand here. I'll think about it more. If you don't find an answer to that let us know.

    Why wouldn’t you just place the radio into the charger base?

    • @northmanproject4007
      @northmanproject4007  Рік тому +1

      Some radios won't work while in a charger. But that would be an obvious option if it works for you to for it and save yourself some money and time.

  • @SK-rj1ti

    I would be careful about recommending big antennas for direct conversion radios, Baofengs in particular. Their reception can degrade dramatically near sources of RF interference, such as power lines, commercial antenna farms, apartment buildings, etc. I live in a city, and my UV-5R is practically useless RX-wise unless I use my shortest rubber duck with it. Superhets like the UV9 are a "whole 'nother story" - use the biggest stick you got.

    • @northmanproject4007
      @northmanproject4007  2 місяці тому

      Well yeah that's true. I have all kinds of radios including mobiles and high-quality japanese-made stuff that overloads when I'm in the city. Just got to do what works for you I guess.

    • @SK-rj1ti
      @SK-rj1ti 2 місяці тому +1

      @@northmanproject4007 Yep, I can jam all my radios within a 10-foot radius by charging things on my Tera Grand power bank:) Reciprocally, I can reset my atomic clock to factory setting by randomly transmitting from an HT - I am not joking! Funny things happen in this RF-polluted world:)

    • @northmanproject4007
      @northmanproject4007  2 місяці тому

      @@SK-rj1ti well your point is definitely valid. I live in the countryside so I can pretty much connect any antennas I want to these cheap little radios and do ok. I'll mention that next time I talk about those things.

    • @SK-rj1ti
      @SK-rj1ti 2 місяці тому

      @@northmanproject4007 Totally understandable. There are folks out there who swear by their UV-5Rs and Btechs. And I am not bashing direct conversion radios in general. I have quite a few of those, some of which I really like. For example, I absolutely agree with you that the Retevis RA85 (RA685 ham) is a very good radio. I don't know if you have one, but I think the RA89 is even better. The RX audio could be a bit "buzzy" on highs, but it's okay. Great ears. Handles big antennas quite well even here.
