I don't call ham radio enthusiasts "sad hams".. I call arrogant jackwads that also happen to have a ham license "sad hams".. Guess which group you just showed everyone you're in ...
I used my uv-5R for the fire Department and search and rescue for 2 years and still have it today! It out performed the name brand radios. It was affordable and functioned well!

We just had an earthquake here in NJ and the US Geological Service has reported that the epicenter was at Randy's house at the exact same time that he was transmitting without an antenna!

I enjoyed the video. RIP UV 5 R. We lost a Baofeng 888s on a muddy ranch road one spring. Two weeks later I found it. Just a corner sticking out of the mud. Cattle, ranch trucks and tractors had ran over the radio for two weeks. I washed it in the sink and charged it back up. It works perfectly to this day.
Thank you for making this video. I've always wondered how tough the UV5 is. I've got four of them and never any problems with function or reliability. Batteries for them are a different story, you have to use caution when buying, some batteries are crap. They really do work well, even with their limitations, so I've given sets of them to all my friends. My friend in Utah uses his for his paramedic service to monitor calls, etc. I've found that using the radios, for hiking or biking or whatever, using them like GMRS to talk to each other, no one gives a s--t! Usually there's no other radio traffic on the channels we use and there's no one monitoring or enforcing anything to do with the FCC. BUT, I know, from all the old world war 2 series tv shows in the '60's, somewhere out there, are truckloads of Nazi soldiers with radio triangulation gear always looking for me, so I remain vigilant. Please endeavor to persevere! Thanks again!
You know the funny thing is one night I was talking to a guy on a local repeater I told him I was using a Motorola and he told me how great the audio was. A couple of days later I told him I was using a Beofeng he told me it sounded bad on the audio...it was the same radio...lol
This is a no-brainer for a troll. What you should do now, is EVERY TIME you talk to him, name some different radio you are "talking on" even though its always the Boof-wang. As you do this, keep track of all the radios you're telling him you're talking on, and his reply to each one. See if the snobby radios always get a good reaction, and cheap ones always get dumped on.
I bought 12 UV-5R radios at the local junk flea swap for $10. Aside from two bad batteries and a cracked screen they all turned on and squirted out radio beam juice for oaver at least one mile. Not bad a deal for $1.20 each and one of them was painted in camo
When you acted as if you were about to press the PTT button many sad hams pissed in their pants. I heard a sad ham operator up the street from me having a meltdown.
oh is that what that was? Think I might of heard it too. glass shatering, the tossing of old rusty satellite dishes and beer bottles across the room, and the nawing at the tangled mic cable and yelling wtf. scary folks I swear
for a 25 - 30 dollar radio, I think it performed fine. the Wouxon UV9g runs what? $125.00? 130? you could buy about 5 of the Baofeng's for that price, that is 5 unrecoverable "oh shit" moments with your radio. If you KNOW that you are going to be really hard on your radio, BUT you are not going to be anywhere where having it would be the difference between life and death, go cheap. If you are ok with paying a few extra nickels for a more rugged radio, go ahead and get one. Oh thank God. I noticed the description said you were going to test a UV-5R, but I had already pushed play on the video. I thought to myself, OMG, what if during the video he pushes the transmit button by accident? I was about to close my browser, delete my cache, throw all my sensitive papers into the bug-out furnace, and proceed with my going into hiding until things cooled off. But my hands were shaking so hard I could not even gather the manual dexterity to close my browser. My arms only swung in wide arcs, like a bear. I had tunnel vision, and was breathing heavily due to the level of panic... I was afraid that just by VIEWING the video I would be complicit in a crime, and the long arm of the FCC would reach out and snatch me. I envisioned multiple black SUV's deployed to my home at high speed, closing in on me minute by minute... Then luckily, you said you were only using the GMRS version of the radio, I stopped what I was doing and layed down for a while. Now I'm back in my chair and I'm going to try to complete the rest of the video now that I am out of condition black... Please do not scare me again like that.
It's non-resilience is offsetted by it's cheap price. At one time, I had 3 lying around. (Just in case). Used to be a pool cleaner. I've had one slip into the pool once. It went DEEP and stayed awhile. Did not survive. Reached into the glovebox and pulled out it's replacement!
I really enjoy your videos and find them informative and entertaining. I bought a UV-5R based off several of your videos. After a few setup issues were resolved, I have fallen in love with this radio. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming!!!

Ya can't beat the Baofeng for price and the quality at that price. I have a BF-F8HP, the 8 watt 3rd generation of the famous UV-5R. I love the thing. At $68 for 8 watts on 2 meters, 6 watts on 70 centimeters, it's a gem.
R.I.P. you beautiful Baofeng UV-5R! I got mine to use as a scanner and only a receiver and it has served me well. Two out of three of my UV-9Gs didn't even survive a rucksack falling into four inches of water on their first trip out, I'm not sure I would want to risk using my UV-5Gs in the rain.
I'm hoping the BTech GMRS PROs will do better when they get here this weekend.
Thanks for the reviews.
Spurious Emissions!
Take a liking and keeps on ticking. Thanks Randy
Thanks for the entertainment. Any thoughts, knowledge of the tailban using baofang in the Stan ? Different brands? Thank you, best regards.
Legend tells that operating a Baofeng without an antenna can summon the Bifrost.

My condolences for the loss of YouVeeFiveArrrrr.
Thank you.
Poor Chonger! She was a good friend... while she lasted. It may have stood a chance, after drowning it, if you had stripped the battery, pulled it apart, and dried it all in a bag of rice, for a few days. Maybe?
The bag of rice costs more than the radio with the inflated price of food these days.
I like the tape over the name plate 😉
4:22 exactly [01:07.00] Nice!
got the 3 band version, and I have dropped it many times and is still in good nick. I also have my licence and is a cheap option for going mobile/portable without using a £400 transceiver that will probably get stolen etc. It just fots on y cycle when I am out.
I love this guys sense of humor lmao I’m a ham. But certainly not a sad ham 😂
Nail in the coffin was being subjected to socks in sandals. Oh the HAManity!
