Why Callum Is 100% Human - The Dragon Prince Theory

  • There is a theoy that has persisted within the Dragon Prince fandom almost since the first season. The theory: Callum is part elf. Though a hybrid character might be interesting, it would be detrimental to Callum's character development and arc through the first 3 seasons. I examine why Callum is, most likely, 100% human.

_Welcome back to Xadia, dude! It's been awhile._ I never believed that Callum could be a half-elf / half-human or hybrid. I mean he could at least show some elvish resemblance, such as eyes or ears.
On my opinion, humans were always capable of doing magic. The thing is, that their potential is very low or unlike elves, the lack that natural connection with the elemental Arcanum. I would like to believe that's why Avaaros has chosen to help humans, he saw that potential, but he though that using Dark Magic was easier for them to learn. However, we know how ended up for humans.
After all, Callum went through basically a spiritual trial/ journey to prove that you can make your own destiny and not fall to temptation.

I have missed covering the show, so it’s nice to be back! I agree, if Callum had an elven parent, he should show at least some traits from that bloodline. I agree that humans have the capability to learn an arcanum, it’s just very hard for them to do so!

@@TheoryPop TDP uses a very similar magic system like Avatar. They do not require "mana" and can be used instinctively.
In TDP you just have to understand the magic and then you can use it, because then you can channel the surrounding magic. You then only need the magic word to give the magic the appropriate shape. A Primal Stone, on the other hand, has so much magic that anyone with the right magic word can use magic.
Through his vision Callum understood the nature of the element and was able to channel the magic with his thoughts. Magical beings like elves, on the other hand, have this understanding from birth. The element is part of them.
Dark magic, on the other hand, subdues magic. You force magic to take on a new, often unnatural form with your own thoughts. This process corrupts the body and mind, but everyone reacts differently to it. It is also dangerous because you can probably accidentally use your own life energy.

Well, if he really is the descendant of a certain elf (coughaaravoscough) then the elven blood was likely diluted throughout the centuries, leaving no physical traces and only Callum’s natural aptitude for Arcanum magic. If Aaravos was really as powerful as it seems he is, it’s likely he mastered all the Arcanums, not just the Star Arcanum, and passed that ability onto Callum. He may have also been able to communicate with animals, spawning Ezran’s ability to do so as well.

I don't believe that Callum is a half-elf. But I _do_ hope that we get to see half-elves at some point. They'd be rare, of course, and they would undoubtedly be outcasts from both human and elven society, but you can't seriously expect me to believe that Callum and Rayla are the first human and elf ever to find each other attractive. The only problem I’d see here is that the elves and humans were separated at housed years before the first season, so that would make Callum’s biological father centuries old! You know that's actually really good point! Completely forgot about it! That is a load off my mind because I was always worried that they were going to be tempted to give him some kind of magical ancestry but that's right they did confirm that he was human. I was worried that they might be tempted to have that come in later in the show as some kind of twist because giving a character a secret ancestry is a very popular trope in fantasy. I look at the implications of Callum being a half elf in terms of what that would mean for the other characters.
For Callum for be a half elf, Sarai’s first husband would have had to be an elf. From what we’ve seen of Sarai so far, and particularly given her sister Amaya’s attitude towards elves at the time, it seems unlikely that Sarai ever would have married an elf.
It also seems like something that either Harrow or Amaya would have brought up at some point if it were true.

People tend to forget that information is lost over time, intentionally or not, a fact often overlooked when theorising about this sort of thing. Its easy to imagine a history where humans did use magic, or at least could, only to lose that connection somehow.

    • @TheoryPop
      @TheoryPop  3 роки тому +7

Perhaps the loss of that knowledge happened before the split, or was accelerated by it. I’ve spoken before about human primal mages that existed in the distant past, before Xadia became divided, but even then I think they had to learn their arcanum, rather than be born with it.

AGREED and it's kind of frustrating because I've heard people claim it's too gary sue because it was set in canon that people couldn't do primal magic without a connection to a course like a primal stone, but then these people are also usually ATLA fans who have no problem with Toph. It was established numerous times in ATLA that earth benders could not metal bend, Toph, at age 12, meditated and thought about metal in a different way which allowed her to find and connect with the earth fragments inside metal and invented something thought to be impossible in a couple hours tops. Dragon Prince said humans couldn't use primal magic because they weren't born with a connection to a primal source, when Callum asked about the connection, the show said that a "connection" was an "understanding", aka knowing the arcanum. The show literally said once you understand the arcanum you have a connection to the source and that elves and other magical beings are born with that understanding, it's part of their instincts but if it is an understanding that connects you, there's no reason to truly believe it's impossible for someone to LEARN to understand something and once they understand, according to the cannon, they would be able to use the magic. Callum went through hell and almost died on his introspection to understand the sky arcanum and it took him a whole seasons worth of trying. Toph figured out a before thought impossible skill in one episode but that's fine and Callum's struggle wasn't? Like if they actually made Callum part something... I'd be mad. Because like you said, it would take away everything we watched him grow and go through.

Why do people want Callum to be part-elf? His story is inspiring and conveys the message that you shouldn't let the world tell you what you can or can't do. It tells young people that if they believe and try hard enough, they can achieve their goals and shape their own future.
If an elven ancestry gets revealed it reverses the message. You're either lucky or not, all your options get decided before your birth. Sucks to be you, just accept your fate.
The show constantly hammers home the point that you should learn from the past, but not let it define the future. I just can't see a secret elven heritage as a possibility for this show.

    • @TheoryPop
      @TheoryPop  3 роки тому +2

I think that the critical factor in Calumn learning magic was his relationship with Rayla: she was the first one to call him a mage, she's a magical being herself so he developed an empathy for them, she agreed to get Aavoros's Key which may have helped him form the connection with the sky Arcanum, and she stayed at his side when he fell into a coma.

I have a theory as to why humans (apart from Callum) can do magic. From what we know humans are the only living creatures with no primal energy. Even animals that cannot cast spells glow under the cube of aaravos, but humans do not. We also don’t know if (apart from aaravos) that elves can use multiple primal sources. Or if they can only use the one they are born with. My theory is, that humans could once use magic. A VERY long time ago. Maybe they could control the primals or maybe dark magic was their arcanum. As they say dark magic was discovered, (maybe as ruins of humanity’s golden age) not created. I believe that aaravos can control all the primals because he found a way to take humanity’s primal energy away from them.

I prefer Callum being fully human. Too many stories use the half-breed concept. What would be interesting though is if he can only use sky magic naturally. Much like elves can only use the magic type they are connected to. This would apply to all humans too. They could only naturally use the magic they are connected to.

One of the things I’d love to see from Callum’s future arc is him circling back at learning princely skills as well with perhaps a magical bent to it. We already know his opinion of himself being “bad at everything “ wasn’t entirely correct, as he was shown to be a great leader and tactician when confident enough.
Perhaps his journey as a mage overlaps with his journey as a prince, learning new forms of magic that help him excel in his own way. Sky mages supposedly can channel magic to manifest as agility and quickness, so perhaps this would go a long way to teach him fighting and horseback riding.

Sure he can do magic but other that he looks absolutely human. All the elves we see have 4 fingers and sometimes have an unnatural skin color with pointed ears while callum has 5 fingers human ears along with a human skin color even if he was half elvish or a quoter elvish (if his dad was half elvish) wouldn't callum have some kind of mutation giving him 4 fingers and pointed ears? Callum looks absolutely human with no evlish features it doesn't make sense for him to be half or even quoter elvish

@@TheoryPop I believe even if it his elvish heritage is further back his ears would be still be a bit bigger or pointer than others we've seen in the show. A childs ear shape is genetic inheritance from the parents, bigger or prominent ears are a dominant trait. Even if his elvish heritage is further down it might allow him to have 5 fingers along with a normal human skin coloring but his ears would still be significantly bigger or a bit pointier than others we see in the show. In the show every human seems to have small or normal sized ears and aren't the slightlest bit pointed the same is seen with callum. If this elvish heritage was further down the line it would have to be before humans where kicked out of Xadia though the elvish traits wouldn't have all disappeared because dominant traits aren't like recessive traits where they can appear less frequently in the offspring he would still have the ears or other genetic mutation inheritaned by his elvish heritage.

I also don't see the creators just making a whole new elvin family for callum though I guess it could be argued that the Cub they got at the batherlaudge could be the key to finding his eliven haratage because it was the "key" but really there nothing go off with that theory. I wouldn't really find Callum being half-elf something as offensive or bad to the story but it would honestly show it on him if he were a half-elf. He doesn't exactly have anything weird going on with his body (as well as maybe tiny sprouting horns) maybe skin being a bit more pinkish? or his ears not being a bit sharper around the edges. Callum's ears are fully round but still, I do wonder honestly. I don't think Amaya knew a lot about Callum's father and we don't know much about his mom either (to confirmed too much). It does seem that his mother Sarai is still more understandable when it comes to magical creatures and not too keen on doing things that harm them but she still is supporting her husband and love him as much as she can. Perhaps Callum's father was a half-elf? , I'm just more curious on how Sarai's viewpoint when it came to the dragon Thunder and magical creatures, when her husband Harrow threw her spear you could hear a loud "noo" from it. Of course, it can be that she is just a kindhearted person who doesn't want bloodshed and war. My only question is if Callum's previous father changed Sarai's viewpoint on magical creatures or something like that. It was said that he died but I won't draw conclusions yet, but I also like the fact that Callum is a human who can do magic, I honestly wouldn't mind if he was a half-elf or something like that. I don't think it would ruin the story, the whole reason why humans went about to do dark magic was that they were seen as "lesser beings" and were starving which drove them into a corner. Dark magic is not exactly evil, its whole existence wasn't evil, but it is not something worth praising either. If Elf's and Dragon's helped humans, if they at very least helped their community grow and helped them with food storage and perhaps tried to explain the connections, it wouldn't have come to this. The first dark magician in season 3 in the first ep, wasn't an evil man. It was clearly shown how Sol treated the human's (while he did had a point that dark magic is dangerous and it takes life and magic from beings), he still tried to kill the whole town of human's to scare them off and the dark magician defended the human's and gave his life for it. I don't think that humans are the ones who started the war but it didn't really help how they were driven into a corner. If Callum is indeed a first human who can do magic, then i really hope he won't be the only one.

Could aaravos be callum distant direct ancestor or biological father?

  • @jokerblade5779
    @jokerblade5779 2 роки тому

Personally can I say that as one of it's functions. The key might be able to allow for creatures to connect to a primal source. In a similar way that Callum did. But. It isn't instant and takes concentration and the ability to focus on understanding that primal source. I actually think that Aaravos actually created this as a channel for the various primal sources but didn't work like a primal stone like he intended. But instead allowed for a mild connection that with patience and consistent focus. Allowed for a person born without that connection to connect to the source and the Aaravos used that to connect himself to the various sources. This is also why it responds to the various sources in other creatures. It is designed to channel that power so of course it all works together as focus of the primal sources. It is the KEY to the primal sources within us and other's and it understands and wants to channel that. In Calum or Calem's dream whne he connected to the primal source of the sky, it showed itself promenently in that dream. And if anything I believe that if used properly can allow for the consistent and conjuctive use of various sources together.
Now I don't think this is nearly as likely but why was Aarvaros sealed away? That is someothing that I think to many people forget about. There is no explanation about who or why? And how does the key work in this. Well I think that the key actually was used by various mages together to seal him away and remove him from all of the world. giving him no direct control over any of the sources which is why he can only channel the source through viran. Not in his world not that we have seen this suppported overall but I think it could be likely.
Anyway all of this is just a theory anyway.
Although I don't demean Calum's gaining his primal source and I would love a natural way or form to bond with the primal source or maybe in a nexus but still it is just a theory.
But also I think that this definitely work. The thing is that maybe all creatures could bond to the arcanum and that some people have more affinity for it then others? Maybe that's why Callum is the only person known to have bonded with a source as human. I think that to bond to a source that you need one or more of these various things before gaining the understanding and properly bonding.
    - Affinity with the sources
    - Magical heritage
    - Key of Aaravos
    - Experience of magic that causes the realisation
There may be more but I think that you need one or more of these to be able to connect to the primal arcanum and use magic.
The more of these you experience the more likely you have a chance to bond to that arcanum. I think it is also plausable that dark magic actually opens these "Gates" inside of you to these arcanums and allows for these connections but forces the channeling of it. And Callum rejecting it and the key of Aarvaros channeling the sky arcanum allowed him to finally to connect properly thorugh his own self determinism.
    Once again just a theory.

There is a third option - Callum could have magical heritage without being part magical creature. If he can use real magic, then it's possible that his ancestors could too and it had some sort of hereditary effect that grew stronger with each generation. It's also possible that magical heritage is on his mother's side. After all, his mother kind of helped him understand the Sky Arcanum, and Ezran has magical ability as well. Ezran's ability to talk to animals is actually a strong evidence in favor of magical ancestry... and it certainly did not come from king Harrow. This would not only preserve the story that real humans can learn real magic, but it would also make the story better, more believable. Right now it feels that Callum learned magic too easily and too quickly, which begs the question how no human managed to do it before. But if it wasn't just his accomplishment, but the work of many generations of humans, then it gets more interesting and plausible.

There's much more story to be told yet. While Callum has had some great development so far, I don't think the 3 seasons we've had will be the end of his journey. He still has much to learn about being a mage and using the Sky arcanum. And you're right, there's the possibility that the elves could view Callum as the exception, at least when it comes to magic. The Sunfire elves and the dragons present at the Stormspire saw the humans that helped defend the dragon queen's home, so there's hope there, but it's far from being a blanket "all humans are good and have the potential for magic" thought. I'm doubtful that Callum will be revealed to be a half-elf, I don't think that revelation adds anything to his character or the story that we've already seen, but it can't be 100% ruled out unless the showrunners themselves say it won't happen.

But when Callum used Dark Magic I found it Strange that he became sick. I hope that will be answered, mostly because I think IF every Dark Mage Apprentice becomes sick after the first spoken Spell wouldn't it be a more Common knowledge? I think it would, and if Callum would have known that he could become sick, it would explain why he didn't want to use dark Magic. Than again, it didn't look like he knew what happened to him in Season 2, when he used it.
I read one Comment about the fact that Callum looked totally Human without any Sign of Elven Heritage, but we had a Dog in Season 1 who has only 3 legs and Lujanne used her Magic to convince everyone that the Dog has 4 legs and they were even able to touch it. So if an Elven Mage can do that with an illussion I think we can't use the Argument, that Callum doesn't show any Sign of Elven Heritage, as an Argument that he isn't. I mean ... maybe his Father used some Kind of Spell on him to hide that part of Callums Heritage. Unlikely but a possibility.

It just comes easier to elves than humans it's instinctive, like speaking your native tongue some things just come naturally to you, you don't have to think about. But someone learning your native tongue has to learn and work hard at it. As native English speakers we know when to use a vs an. When it's an unvoiced verses voiced TH, when C is like S and when it is like C. We instinctively know how to use different verb forms (past/present/present participle. . .). People learning English need to study and learn how to do it, it's not instinctive. You ask a native English speaker to explain certain things about why we said this or why we do that and they might not know, they just do it.
On the other hand dark magic is like relying on google translate, it's the easy way out. It can mimic but you can see evidence that it's not the pure or true thing.
I also see the "humans can't do magic" an assumption because they never have figured it out. Which makes it limiting because when the assume that humans can't they don't even have them try to do it. Like assuming someone with disablities is stupid or can't do something (maybe they can't do it the same way, but can do it). It also might be similar to not teaching slaves to read, "why would they need it?" "They're not smart enough to learn it." giving them power over humans. An ignorant society is easier to control.

@@TheoryPop i just meant that he was born connected to the stars Arcanum, but he was able to connect to and master all of the others, so why wouldn't others be able to do the same? So yeah, maybe it's a star elf hability, but then, why would Callum be able to connect to the sky Arcanum? Why wouldn't he be able to connect to more Primal Sources?

I think Startouch elves likely have an easier time connecting with other arcanum’s than humans. There’s very little we know about the Star arcanum so far, my current thoughts are that it may in some way allow those like Aaravos to connect with more than one arcanum. There is a possibility Callum could connect with more than one arcanum, though the fact he had to go into a dark magic “coma” to help gain insight into the Sky arcanum means he’ll likely have to work hard at it. But there’s still much more about the Sky arcanum to learn, there’s got to be dozens of spells to learn yet, and ways of combining them to produce different effects too.

In order for the "villain is the hero's father" plot twist to work a relationship between the two characters must be established as early as possible. What has been done to establish a relationship between Calumn and Aaravos as of the end of the third season in a series that's expected to have seven seasons?
Does Calumn even know about Aaravos?

I haven't watched The Dragon Prince but if tow things are true then he almost certainly has elven ancestors:
    1. Human and Elves lived for a significant time together
    2. Human and Elves can produce fertile offspring
The only thing that can stop two groups of people from interbreeding is geographic distance. No matter what laws or social deterens are put in place you can't stop people from mixing with each other, but given how long elf and men are seperated that elf might have been his grand grand grand grand... Father/Mother.

Interesting points. But, if you had watched the show, you'd know that elves viewed humans as lesser creatures. While there may have been limited couplings between humans and elves, it seems likely it would not have been particularly widespread. Though that can't guarantee Callum wouldn't have an ancestry from a bloodline resulting from a human/elf pairing, that would still be going back over 1000 years, to a time before the world, and its races, were seperated. I'm not sure to what point that may "dilute" the elven influence, or the potential Arcanum. Thank you for watching!

if callum did have skywing elf ancestry (that would make the most sense becasue hes connected to the sky arcanum) he would look like an elf. he wouldnt fully look like an elf but some elf traits would show. but he has regular human ears, no horns, no markings, 5 fingers, and his skin isnt blue or gray like skywing elf skin.

I don't think his work would be undermined in anyway personally. We all seen his hard work and know it was what got him his understanding of the Arcanum and not some elf blood, but rather his choices and will to overcome the dark magic. Everyone's worried about it making it look like it was easy for him and not realizing that we already seen it was really hard for him. There is that one and only negative to hime being more than human in my opinion. And many positives. When a story wraps up I like to know it's a good ending and I feel like him being more than human would be for the best. One example I can think of is the lifespans. Rayla will be a widow for nearly 700 years if callum just has a human lifespan. Also it could be a great symbol of coexistence.

  • @mulduls

I do think that Callum is part elf, and that Aaravos is his ancestor. If this is true, then it wouldn’t be detrimental to his development at all, and would actually build on it and provide context for past events. Callum wasn’t good at anything princely. Aaravos was obviously not royalty, and neither was Callum's mother, originally. Callum’s heritage was undermining his progress in becoming a good prince. Thus, when magic came along, he felt it was something he was good at, as it was with Aaravos. If this is true, and Aaravos gets free, and Callum finds out the truth, then it is possible if not probable that Callum will defect to Aaravos’s side to learn more about the Arcanums and his ancestry. In return, Rayla will try to bring Callum back to their side, and Callum may even be able to convince Aaravos to leave with him. Viren would remain the main villain after it looked like that role would change to Aaravos, providing a nice plot twist and also deepening Callum and Rayla’s relationship. And building Callum’s development. And giving Aaravos a reason to exist in the series. And did I mention Callum’s developement?

@@ethenallen1388 look, I don't know what it had to do with Callum, but we have to take all things into consideration with these types of theories, especially when we don't have much to go off of. Right now, an argument could be made for both "Callum is related to Aaravos" and "Callum has nothing to do with Aaravos". At this point, we just don't know, but I have correctly looked at evidence and constructed sound theories before, and even guessed things right, so I'm rather confident that I've managed to piece together what we know and provided explanations for the things that need them.

@@mulduls I just don't see why the series' creators would go that route when Welchie gave three reasons why they would not, all of which I agree with.
I'm aware of only one reason folks would believe there's a blood connection between Aavaros and Calumn and I have an alternative explanation: the Sky Rune on the Key of Aavaros was glowing when Calumn dreamed of his mother telling how to truly understand something and he woke up understanding how to connect to the Sky Arcanum. This tells me that the Key had been created to help its owner to unlock the different Arcanums and it recognized Calumn as its current owner.
