Brilliant point at the end about not using stoves to keep warm. Never heard anyone else talking about this. A lot of people probably think it's common sense, but a lot of people seem short on that these days. You may have just saved lives with this video.😮
As a American watching this I have applied some of the UK fishing techniques to my arsenal for catfish and I have to say I have upped my catches by a good amount. Thanks for all these new tips.
Raise your bed chair as high as possible, by extending the legs, keeps you further away from the cold floor. You can also slide tackle bags under it to make more room and insulate you even more.
It is really tempting in the winter to warm the bivvy up with your stove (oh, I'll just give it 10 minutes!) but your advice is so important and you make the point really well.....buy a decent bag, folks...and a hot water bottle too!
I wear headtorch around my neck, easy to pull up one handed onto your head when you get a run. Spare set of clothes in the motor. Use a groundsheet, stops rising damp and reduces condensation. Great tips from you Joe!
Good video mate. Lot of good pointers for people who haven't night fished before. Fair play for telling us about the gas stove stuff. I genuinely find that a nice 5 season bedchair really does the trick for me. My dog sometimes comes fishing with me too and in the winters he is like an oven under the bedchair cover haha
Good tip is to treat yourself to a heated jacket/hoodie they run off a rechargeable battery, they keep your torso warm without over heating, they range between 60 and 150 quid, I sell them at work to mechanics but use one for my nights fishing
Not just night fishing, but make sure someone knows where you are. Get yourself set up then tell/phone someone what peg and lake you are on. I'm talking from experience i had a heart attack 2 weeks ago while on my own on a lake. I was lucky the ambulance crew got to me in time and I'm still around.
Great tips bro! I found it's important to set my bivvy up the same way every time. That way you almost build a muscle memory as to where everything is. You're totally right about the old creature comforts. Good food and drink is definitely the one. Fishing is a time for treats. You may as well enjoy it!
Great info Joe..even got the hot water bottles myself, which only took me 38 years to, work that one out, how to keep warm ..best decision I ever made...👍👍..best of luck with your new vlogs.subbed
My number one tip follows on from wet feet. If your limited for dry clothing remember your skin will dry off read to put nice dry socks on after playing the fish. Goes for pants also 😂
I hang a carbon monoxide alarm in the bivvy at all times even when cooking and stuff its better to know than guess i never put anyting on when im in bed but i do have a bivvy heater that i put outside and point in the bivvy on winter mornings when im up and active
Another thing always let people know where you are, id also say try and fish commercial waters that are gated and locked up of a nighttime there usually far safer and often will have other people on the bank, if your going to fish park lakes or somewhere out in the sticks try not to do it alone bring a mate there’s safety in numbers and some may not agree but I always keep a rounders bat in the Bivvy never know when you’ll come across and opportunist trying to rob someone for their tackle
I've only done single nighters so far but I just leave my trainers on overnight and tend to stay awake and read but just doze in and out semi-conscious throughout the night and following day.
Being a gas engineer and big on the dangers of CO Poisoning it actually makes you realise how important it is not use a gas stove even more when in a bivvy at night time ..
18’’ bankstick at hand reach away from bedchair…. Never needed it , hopefully never will, but sleep much better knowing I’ve got instant protection right next to me
@warrenlewis2069 avid exo + Bivvy 👌🏻 the little headtorch that clips on to my hat also has a motion sensor which I forgot to mention. Makes it a lot easier for sure!
Adding to no.5 is always take a mobile phone with power bank for emergencies whilst also watching footing on the bank. A friend of mine grandad lost his life falling into freezing lake whilst fishing with his teenage grandson fast asleep in the bivvy
Last night session I did, I discovered my bivvy had a leak in the roof. Getting woken up cold and wet at 2am was not an enjoyable experience. We packed up early as the rain hadn't stopped 5 hours later.
Get a cheap motion sensor light and put it under your bed chair facing out so as soon as you put your feet on the ground it lights up everything. Alot better than a light connected to your bite alarms cause nothing worse than your light turning on for a line bite. Also i always have a pot of water ready to boil next to me so as soon as i wake up i can have a tea cause there's nothing better than tea with a sunrise
my tip if you have to use a gas or petroleum heater, switch it on 30min before you go to sleep while you are out of the bivvy. Then switch the heater off and slip into a warm sleeping bag. Never use a heater while sleeping!!
Good comments. I use a trangia stove in winter, no gas freezing when cooking or making a brew. But if you want to use it to heat your bivvy and fall asleep it burns out in about 20 mins so you should still wake up alive in the morning.
Do not leave dishes with leftover food on the floor. Rats are big these days and do crazy things in the middle of the night!😉 For everyone who's out now, catch a big one. Greetings from Europe! 💪
Probably the most Important thing these days if fishing somewhere open to joe public is ,Your Safety! Can you look after yourself? If not Dont go, yeh i know loads who take weapons but your the one who will be going down.
Here's a tip. Don't walk about the swim with no footwear. To many anglers drop hooks or old hooks left liying in the swim. Not nice to stand on a lost Ronnie or loose hook!!!! Especially if it's old and barbed!
I suppose that depends on the venue. I filmed this on my syndicates which is very well kept so this didn't cross my mind but definitely a valid point on some places
NEVER run out your bivvy in socks.... the amount of rigs and hooks I've picked up in a swim (dropped / lost by others).... just don't do it... not worth the risk
Put lugguge under your bedchair use the groundsheet at same time stops damp rising Purchase a dpm.ex army 7x5 tarp ...this can save your session in so many ways ,ie barrow cover during the night, protects your brolly ,bivvy in event of a seam leak ,so many different uses, another is a 58 patteren poncho ,again ,barrow cover, bivvy saver, use it to slip on during a down pour at night Always three ,induvidual fire lighting appliances, ferro rod,2x lighters. Always two head torches one on,one spare, absolutely avoid rechargeable head torches... Crocs or similar next to yer bedchair When you have set up ,start packing up in your mindset in case the weather or similar ruins a session Check you leave no food around ,or water bottles for a rat to urinate on..(i put my Trangia away in rucksack .. I use a night heater and just have the outlet pipe blowing into the bivvy, only downside is having to carry a substantial battery to power it.

An additional blow up sleeping mat, tucked between my bedchair and sleeping bag has been a game changer. Cheap and effective
@@darrenfenton2828 using science to stay warm 💪🏻 I like it
Bush craft tip put thermarest or whatever ,inside the sleeping bag ,aids more warmth and facilitates a faster exit ,inside ,not under sleeping bag..
A hot water bottle is, by far, the most underrated piece of kit for night fishing.
@@Tialano definitely!
So what Curley is telling us is, when it comes to head torches he prefers a clip on as opposed to a strap on! 😮

I wouldn't condone having a weapon as the law would side with the offender (stupidly) but I agree with letting people know where you are
