Today we have so many animation tools that can do almost all that stuff pretty much with a few basic instructions. In 2000 Nintendo didn't have those and had to pretty much program it completely from scratch.
E'Gadds dialogue from the demo once you hit 1:30 "Luigi! I have enough data on the mansion now, you can return back to the lab!" I don't remember what he said next, as this is from my memory.
Do u have more memories? That would be helping people which are searching info about the BETA/ DEMO (bruh lucky guy played the "Beta") and, what do u mean with 1:30 i dont see any dialogue
This game had an impact on me like no other game I’ve ever played. I’m 24 years old and I remember playing this for the first time on GameCube. Every year, around fall time, I always re play the game. I’ve been doing it for years! I can’t say the same for any other game. What I can tell you about this game is I always felt like I wanted more… from the hidden rooms to the teleportation mirrors… I just remember discovering all these cool things and always wanted more surprises. The biggest thing was, I always wished there was another floor to the mansion or a way to walk around outside or to visit E Gadd at his lab. I wish there were more secrets in the mansion to uncover and every time I play this game I always try to find some new secret door or something even though I know it’s not gonna be there. If they ever re-make this game I’d love for them to add more of those elements. I played LM2 & 3 and it’s just not the same as those dark creepy halls.
I never realized it but you just described what's been bugging me. LM2 and 3 were fine but nothing came close to the charm of the original. Whether it was the dank dark hallways or the ghost designs or maybe just nostalgia I always wanted more to do in it. It was perfectly creepy without scaring me. The sequels just seem too cartoony to be creepy.
@@pphead9960 agreed. I think the biggest issue is the lighting differences between the games. In LM3, the tone of the game is too bright and “happy”. I felt SAFE playing LM3 no matter where I was in the hotel. In the original Luigi’s mansion, there was lightning sounds, dark hallways, and even that part where the mansion loses power and the game forces you to go to the basement and turn it back on. I know this sounds crazy but that was TERRIFYING when I was a kid, but in a GOOD way. The game had a way of scaring me but also getting me hooked on it.
@@CodyBPyrotechnics the fact you made it to the basement as a kid would of been insane to me. When I was a kid I stopped playing when I got to the coat room the first time cus it was so creepy. Now tho it’s why I keep coming back to it. It makes me a little afraid to think of what they might do if they re release LM1. I don’t want them to ruin it.
@12 34 exactly, I’ve got the entire game down to 5-6 hours depending on how the triplets room goes and boolauses lol I’ve beaten the game 48 times so far. I’m definitely NOT a speed runner just been playing the game for forever lol
Have you tried luigi's mansion: dark moon? You can visit E Gadd's lab, there's a second floor, you can go outside- the stuff you listed that you wanted!
My nephew loved watching me play this game and he’d walk around our house shaking random items and yelling for Mario. I’m very glad they included that in the game.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 I didn't laugh, although that is probably because I at first thought that it was a real piece of garbage he found online. But by the end of it I realized that they can't be that bad at writing.
I have seen a lot of videos on the development of Luigi's Mansion, and I have done plenty of research on the topic, as the game is one of my favorites of all time. This video is *easily* the most well-researched, complete, and best video on Luigi's Mansion's development that I have ever seen, and I cannot thank you enough for putting in the care that this game so rightfully deserves.
I can't believe you got me so invested in an hour long video about a game that no one seems to know about! Seriously, great job, your style of speaking feels very natural and conversational. Luigi's Mansion 3 is the one I have the most attachment to, but I have massive respect for the original. Considering the trend-chasing by many AAA developers, I love that Nintendo puts so much love and effort into something as wonderfully weird as horror for kids and vacuum-based gameplay.
And in my family, nobody but me would win.. and anyway, this would mean someone with actual experience with the game could be in control.. XD XD Yeah.. Luigi's my favourite character-
33:42 Going by the fact Luigi could crouch at some point in development, maybe you were meant to be able to suck up the dirt and crawl through to the gallery. The Dirt pile does seem like it's blocking a hole.
yeah that makes sense, especially if the paintings were valuable or "prized"', maybe E Gadd hid the paintings to prevent them from being stolen or something
52:57 "not going to lie having a tall stretched out Mario rescuing Mario with Luigi is kind of strange" literally in Super Mario Galaxy you can play as a slightly shorter Luigi while you can also rescue Luigi in a similarly haunted Mansion
You think you’re all sneaky posting at such hours of the night? Jokes on you! My body has grown immune to sleep! Edit: turns out, editing your comment removes the heart you got. Darn.
Okay, so I don't know if anyone will read this or even care, but I found an old ign article dating back to October 13, 2000, and it talks about Luigi's Mansion. It says that the number of players is...2. This could be at a point where the 2-player mode was being worked on, so that's what ign thought was going to be in the final game. Then again, ign did have a habit of getting literally everything else they predicted in the article completely wrong, saying stuff like, and I quote, "Nintendo insists that the game is merely a technical demo. IGNcube thinks there's a lot more to the story, though. Our general theory is that Luigi's Mansion is not just a demo or even its own game, but rather what we saw was part of the new Mario title." This, of course, was entirely untrue. Luigi's Mansion actually DID turn out to be it's own game, what a surprise! But, here's where things get interesting. The article goes on to mention stuff about the canceled Super Mario 64: Part II, where they say this, "The rumor about this game was that it featured a gigantic world map, perhaps similar to Super Mario Land and Super Mario Bros. 3. It was even said that Nintendo was exploring the possibility of having more than just two playable characters." This sounds oddly familiar, doesn't it? Almost like a very basic description of Super Mario 3D World! Does this mean that plans for 3D World can be traced back to the late 90's, or was ign just making stuff up? Who knows? I just thought it was kind of cool. Edit: Sorry about that, guys! I thought I had the link to the article in here, but I guess I forgot to put it in! I happened to notice that after looking through my old comments, and I tried to leave a reply with the link, but I think it might have gotten deleted. Well, hopefully putting it in this comment doesn't delete everything! Sorry again! web.archive.org/web/20001019085605/cube.ign.com/previews/15453.html

Now imagine a mod that is a darker, more scary version of the game based on the what we thought the beta was at the time of the original episode back in 2012. It’d be interesting to see what wasn’t true still realized into something. Maybe add a bit of original content to make it stand out.
Considering the original Luigi's Mansion video was 11 minutes long and this on is more or less a *WHOLE HOUR* I think you did a great job! I enjoyed watching this, keep on doing what you do best.
"the game was finished at 3am" "this file was edited at 1am" yeah, probably whatever timezone beta64 is in, since theres a huge timezone difference from america to japan it was more likely done some time in the afternoon
He probably knows that, but don't forget that dummy enemy in Final Fantasy (Forgot the number). The Japanese text in one of the descriptions translates to "This translation is killing me! It's almost 2 in the morning. I'm tired! I'm tired!", it probably means that they stay up working pretty late. But I could be wrong, it's just a guess.
Dammit Beta, Zombigi freaked the heck out of me when I was a kid, and that just brought those fears back! Seriously though, your Beta Luigi's Mansion video was one of my favourites back in the day, and it's great to see you do it from a fresh perspective. It's super clear that you've found a style you're comfortable with, so stick with it. Great stuff as always man. A-also may I request a redo of Pikmin. Please?
@@DIEgo-rv6cg to be fair, every Luigi's mansion game is pretty childish and cartooney. I will admit that the first one is easily the scariest, but even then it's not really what I'd call scary. Its spooky, but I'm not scared of it, and I wasn't even scared of it when I played it as a little kid.
57:26 the first mystery sound seems to be thunder, the second sound is probably for the dog ghost either it growling or snoring, the third sound was probably for a glitching TV or for when Luigi makes the phone call with toad, and sound four... I'm not too sure... maybe a ghost struggling to get out of the Poltegust's suction or dialogue sound for when some ghosts speak, I'm not sure... =)
I will never not love this video. It is both a comfort video and a spooky season tradition for me. Thanks for this gift of a video on my favorite game!
Correct. Toads are unliving unfeeling creatures that only seek to consume and destroy. They act cute and innocent but they are just waiting, waiting until their time arrives.
Yeah, Nintendo lose its soul around 2008. By that I mean the passion of the writers died and was more focused on profit. Before then, they had creative liberty. Now, they’re just milking the franchises by having zero lore commitment and leaking hardly any progress in story.
@@KamyAnai03 I think they wanted to make it a bit more kid friendly (this is part of the Mario franchise after all) but tried to recapture the feel of Luigi's Mansion. Problem is kid friendly doesn't work well with creepy
Heck yeah, here it is. After a couple weeks of filling you in with details on the development of LM and the scrapped leftovers on the Discord group, restoring them, and recording high quality clips. That was quite the journey. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to help make this video as great at it is right now. ;) By the way, for everybody (more like only a couple of people) still keeping up with the project or those who haven't heard the news about it - stay tuned. We'll have screenies, clips, playthroughs, streams, and more... all to come soon. At least I hope. :p
On the small changes on the story: I remember watching an interview with, of all things, a guy who was one of the original developers of World of Warcraft, and probably one of the best things he said there was simply "the lore is the first thing to change." So, things like "but mansion was supposed to be an illusion" makes way more sense when you realize that story is by far the easiest thing to change out of anything in making a game.
6:35 The thought that Mario just carries around a Star with him just because is funny. I guess when you've been around the block enough times, you start packing accordingly.
The third one is actually Japanese and apparently has something to do with Japanese culture. Something about the death of a child and hanging lanterns somewhere. I honestly forgot. Unfortunately, this cannot be proven conclusively because of just how distorted the sound is.
When E. Gadd talks about how he lives in the mansion and how it was speculated that his Lab was inside the Mansion, Maybe that’s what inspired the idea of the Lab Inside in the Last Resort in Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Though i think instead of a life meter, a scared meter would have been a better idea, the more damage Luigi took, the closer he was to run out of the mansion scared silly, thus ending the game.
This and Melee were the first games I ever had for the GameCube. Growing up with the NES/SNES/N64, THIS game was absolutely GORGEOUS! Along with RE1 Remake, I thought graphics couldn't get any better than this! Great vid as always!
Luigi's mansion will always have new discoveries and eternal mysteries, that's what makes it a timeless classic. Btw I used to revisit the original Luigi's mansion beta 64 every year or so, SO glad you revisited it!
Coming here after watching the original video on Luigi’s Mansion. Such a difference. You really have a solid style now, both in comedy and in identity. Good for you man.
@Master Farr there literally is a room in the first Mansion / world call "the lab" and egad is shown working in it in the opening cutscene, but if you mean one that he still in control of then yes I see what you mean
Something I want to point out is that once unused part of that Chauncey can still be heard normally in the final game just by waiting and not pressing A when he asks to play with you
My sister and I used to watch this all the time. We still do sometimes. It's amazing, really in-depth, and super "spooky". Like, ultra-spooky. Keep up the good work.
I love betas and early models of games! Seeing old idea that were scrapped completely or still coded in is pretty neat. I'm addicted to TCRF and seeing all the cool stuff
I was curious about some of those scrapped sound effects, so I did some experimenting. The sound at 57:53 is clearly very slowed down speech, so I sped it up by about 250% to hear it at a more discernable speed. Turns out its just a male voice blabbering like "blahbleuhblehblahblah" with a wavery filter over it to make it wobble up and down in tone. The sound at 58:04 is a female voice sped up slightly and cut off a bit while being played repeatedly. It sounds like something from an official recording like you might hear at the beginning of a pre-recorded message of a phone hotline or something, but she's saying in a very upbeat tone: "Welcome to-". And the last sound after that, I couldnt decipher. sounds like a voice with several filters put over it and then paulstretched slightly, but its definitely something being played once and then played once more in reverse. I think sound design stuff like this is interesting and I find it fun to try and decode some of the ways they make these sounds. You never know if you'll find some sort of neat easter-egg hidden in altered sound effects like those
Ha! Nice to see I wasn't the only one to play around with those sounds in an editor. I know a slowed-down voice when I hear it. It's too bad there weren't any big discoveries to make reversing and speeding up audio so we'll just have to get 'em next time.
Wow, I thought I was the only one scared of the ghosts as a kid. Those ghosts were the reason I was afraid of the dark. I bought a copy of the game a couple years back, one of my favorite games of all time.
This game traumatized me as a kid, I was terrified of the dark after playing it in general but at like 2 in the morning under a blanket in a dark room, ( I know smart kid) my dog made noise across the house and I haven't been able to deal with the dark since.
@@KamyAnai03 the sound effects, synths, and noises give the game a other worldly creepy vibe the new games don’t have. It’s honestly something you have to play and experience yourself to understand the difference in atmosphere to the sequels.

Imagine Mario being player 2. For the first time in history, siblings would fight over playing Luigi! 😂
And in my family, nobody but me would win.. and anyway, this would mean someone with actual experience with the game could be in control.. XD XD

What do you mean, I demanded to my brothers I would play Luigi in 3D World
I always wanted Luigi and my brother always wanted Mario so yeah i never fought over Mario
But mario is player 2 in this game.Cause they designed Luigi first sooooo that make luigi is player 1.

Now imagine a mod that is a darker, more scary version of the game based on the what we thought the beta was at the time of the original episode back in 2012. It’d be interesting to see what wasn’t true still realized into something. Maybe add a bit of original content to make it stand out.

I remember watching an interview with, of all things, a guy who was one of the original developers of World of Warcraft, and probably one of the best things he said there was simply "the lore is the first thing to change."

This was one of my favorite episodes! Luigis mansion always intrigued me so much growing up. I wish Nintendo would go back to the spooky approach
