But.... the corrosion is fake. It's a brass case, so wouldn't rust like that, no pitting when cleaned up, the cotton inside was really clean for something that would have had to be underwater to corrode like that. More than likely dipped a nice lighter in a bucket of rusty water and let it dry on there. So really just a cleaning and not a restoration. A lot of guys do it overseas to get in on the money made from restoration videos on youtube. Even this channel if you look at some of his past videos. N M Might be chemically done as well, but in any regard I agree with you. The wear was inconsistent with the outside and much of the rust looked suspiciously new.
Brass is a red (copper-based) metal, it's nothing like iron. It doesn't "rust", but it oxidates quite easily. The oxidation layer actually protects the metal underneath, so there won't be any pitting for a very long time. Remove the oxidation layer, and you can easily get the metal underneath to look like new. See all those green copper roofs? They're good for a century or more.

Xp3r facts? You mean your assumption? You think it was for citizens? Regardless, someone from who served acquired it. Show some respect instead of assuming it wasn’t in a “battle” 💀
Judging off of the third class pretty officer rank on the front of the lighter it's a safer bet to assume he was most likely a navy corpsman attached to a marine division, we spend so much time with the marine corps that we pick up a lot of their saying, and in turn a lot of marines see us as marines in our own right (that is if you're not utterly incompetent at your job when treating wounded marines)

This video interested me a lot, for the following reasons: Excellent image quality, no music, the movements are slow enough so that we understand each step well, the work plan is constantly clean and in order, it there is an admirable care to do and finish everything thoroughly and in an exact order, the final product is: a real masterpiece, of great Art. I admire, I validate, I encourage and I say Thank you! I've done a lot of restorations on Zippos as well, and for future reference, the next time you're doing one for a customer, remember that it's less expensive to buy a 3 or 5 pack of cheap lighters and remove the flints, using them to place in the Zippo than it is to buy Zippo brand flints that aren't as long, and you get more longevity from the ones in the lighters.. Also, you can store the extra flints in the cotton wadding inside the fuel chamber. Excellent job, by the way!. (P.S. Long Binh is where Johnny Cash went when he was overseas during the Vietnam War entertaining the troops.)

Outstanding work. Some Service Member carried that around with him through some seriously tough times.

@@greatestever3814 1. It might not have been from Vietnam. 2. It's not even certain that a service member had it. Face facts
@@xp3r670 3rd class Petty Officer insignia for the US Navy. With the inscription, the logical conclusion is it came from a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy.
Xp3r facts? You mean your assumption? You think it was for citizens? Regardless, someone from who served acquired it. Show some respect instead of assuming it wasn’t in a “battle” 💀
The quote stems from the US marine corp in WW2, so i'm guessing the owner of the Zippo was a marine during the Vietnam war.
The person who had this Zippo is up in heaven watching this guy repair his and/or her Zippo thinking “wtf thanks”
3rd class petty officer “crow”. It’s probably was made by some Vietnamese store in Saigon, is my guess. Over the top items like this re sold outside of every Navy base in the US.
When I say “made,” I mean they took zippo lighters and embellished them with the “crow” for instance, and maybe the etched words.
Right, and why paint the Chevron black? It's not to be highlighted apart from the crow...
Seepage Muck the restorer did do a nice job overall.
That's the first thing I said to myself when I saw the thumbnail, "That's a third class crow..." :D

Who the hell would dislike this?! I mean, it could have been left the way it was for history, but it's a lighter that deserves to be restored.
I think a lot of people liked it better un-restored, I most certainly did. Not that it wasnt also cool to restore it.
Imagine doing this without electrical tools but by hand
I feel like it would be more fun

The only "hand made" parts now are loading/unloading the buffing and plating machines, gluing on the emblem and cleaning/boxing them. It's pretty automated but still many departments touch them.

This is a zippo for a soldier from southern Vietnam. "Long Bình" was the name of a place in southern Vietnam at that time. According to the information on the zippo it was 1967-1968

Thanks for watching Robyn 👍👌
Why is the eagle still rusty... I thought he’d clean it up little more ☹️
random2laugh maybe it was impossible to clean up more without ruining it
I thought the same thing
Out of respect I am sure
Because he coated it with a special paint that goes on rust...probably a converter paint of some kind.
It’s a crow not an eagle. It’s the rank of a petty officer third class in the navy
The crow you see with the chevron is a “third class petty officer” E4 in the US Navy. Very cool lighter :)
Probably an HM3 in Vietnam with the quotes context
Man, I would love one of those lol
CORRECT.
It looks so damn nice!
How a BM would restore it, “ight.... Sand it, prime it and slap some haze grey on it. Good as new”
Awesome resto. There's something very satisfying about watching the process of taking something tired and unusable and putting it back to good working order. Looking forward to seeing what you try next.
Hey Daniel Thank's for watching - and yes I really think that too. I'm so happy with the outcome of the lighter myself :) ... and if you promise to not tell anybody 🙃.... It's a huge antique fire bell coming up in a few days.. i'm about to edit the video as we speak - have a nice day

Awesome restoration but if you send it to zippo they repair it for free just postage
Showing the bottom markings would help identify it further.
Zippo has changed their logo few times so going by what logo is on the bottom will help narrow down the year. And most zippos have a year engraved on bottom. I’m a HUGE zippo fan and am quite jealous of this zippo.
it's not a vietnam's war. lighter
Hey Joe... I know. I actually forgot to show it in the end of the video. But there is a short clip where you can paus 7.35 I think. Thanks for watching 👍

The outside looked really cool before the restoration.
Think leave the outside and finish the inside maybe?

The quote at the end left me in tears. This was amazing. 🤘🏻😭
4:39 Gotta love those Dremels. Been one of my favorite tools for a couple of decades now.
There's a longer (complete?) version of that expression that a few of us ex-troopies learned:
"We, the unwilling, led by the ignorant, are attempting to do the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much for so long, with so little, that we can now do anything with nothing."
Very beautiful
This flame returns to illuminate the still alive memory of an eagle that returns to fly, for the courage of who, has given his blood and his life for the Country. This flame will never go out!! A hug from Italy. 💗
Not gonna lie that was pretty damn poetic.
this is from the vietnam war... one of america’s biggest humiliations and one of the most pointless and brutal wars we ever fought in.

i am Vietnamese. "Long Binh" is a place name of Vietnam. 67-68 is the regional control number.

Zippo lighters are still being made to last, the technology is exactly same.
Its about returning it to use, long after it was useless, to deny decay yet another trophy.

why didn't you clean the emblem like you did the rest before painting it now it's still rusting underneath.
Right? Even if you wanted to "leave it with character", at least clean the area before you paint...

Unless it's going to be kept outside I a little remaining corrosion will make no difference.
The eagle emblem could have had a touch more work done on it if you ask me, but overall it's an amazing restoration, I was fascinated by this! Please keep these video's up because I strive to be able to do stuff like this myself!!
