Master of SOrrows sounds so interesting! The Mistborn series is probably my favorite series! I hope you like the next 2! The 3rd one is my favorite in the series! Also can't wait to see what you think of the Way of Kings! I am reading through Words of RAdiance right now and it is such an amazing series.
Oh maaannnn now I really need to read the rest of the Mistborn series! I've heard that the second book is a bit slow so that's the only reason I've been putting it off haha. The Way of Kings just sounds SO EPIC.
Girl same! I made the same promise. I used to order from Book Outlet a lot but after the issues with the lack of diversity within their vlogger friend program and the comments they made accordingly, I swore I would never support them again. I've been ordering from small businesses all over, and while I feel good about the purchases, I definitely can't make as many, lol. But I need to read my owned TBR anyway......it's big LOL!!!!
hahaha giiiirrrrl I feel you! My book-buying is in smaller batches and is more intentional these days but I guess that's good? I can't say that I'm saving money but at least I'm doing the best that I can with the best that I have. Good on you for making the same vow!
So I was a huge H.P. Lovecraft fan once upon a time. Then one day I walked into one of my graduate seminars and my professor and fellow students were talking about how H.P. Lovecraft was so extremely racist that he would not leave his apartment in fear of running into undesirables like the Albanian immigrants. Turns out, a lot of the horror he is talking about is a fear of immigrants. He was a huge fan of Hitler, he wrote endlessly on conspiracies about Jews, and said that black people were semi-human. So there I stood, frozen at the front door of the conference room, thinking over all the H.P. Lovecraft stories I had read, and coming to terms with the fact that I would never be able to read H.P. Lovecraft again because I would know what that fuck face was really talking about. I do not have a small H.P. Lovecraft collection, I bought a lot of H.P. Lovecraft in really nice leather bound editions. It was like finding out that John Lennon beat the fuck out of his wives and girlfriends, like dude, I own almost every Beatles album, now every time I attempt to listen to them I just think "John Lennon beat the fuck out of every woman he was ever with and he was a shit father." I kept my H.P. Lovecraft books because I have tons of books by racists. I was a political science major so the amount of books I have written by Nazis is pretty alarming unless you take into consideration that I read them for my political theory classes and used them for research papers. I even have Dracula which Bram Stoker wrote as an anti-Semitic propaganda piece about the horrors of Jews buying land in England. However...it still sucks because now if I read H.P. Lovecraft, it isn't for the love of horror, it is for the academic purpose of analyzing colonialism and racial inequality in literature. The point is, I see so many people praise H.P. Lovecraft and call him the father of horror and go on and on about this fucking piece of shit who basically wrote all of his horror stories based on his absolute hatred of 'inferiors'. Keeping in mind that a lot of people just don't know. However, pretty much everyone who studies literature, and all the publishing houses, and all the people who do the literary rewards do know. They know damn well that he was a piece of shit. They know he is extremely racist and they pull that crap about separating the man from the work. The work is racist propaganda, there is no separating it when the entire intention of it was to construct horror stemming from his racism. I would see horror novels that had the H.P. Lovecraft award on them and think "Gee Wiz I am excited to read that because anything with the H.P. Lovecraft award must be good." And I am sorry for ranting because my original intention was just to give you a heads up but every time I think about it I just start raging with anger because these people know, they know who H.P. Lovecraft was. They know he wrote endlessly about his racism and praised white supremacy, it was not in anyway a secrete, it was common knowledge because this prick was publishing articles like "On the Creation of N-word" about how black people were something in between man and beast. All of that is just ignored and the result is we continue to praise this racists and his fucking up novels to this day. Like I said, I am sorry for the rant. I am not in anyway accusing you of being racist or saying anything against you. I know your morals and I thought you would really want to know. I just watch time and time again as people promote him and his books because most people don't know about him personally because the companies and literary elites who do know straight up ignore the issue entirely while continuing to heavily promote his shit to the horror community. It seriously enrages me, probably because I was such a huge fan and I felt so incredibly lied to and ashamed that I introduced his books to so many people and raved about him to so many. Similar to how I felt when I read the John Lennon, Playboy Bunny interview where John is just casually talking about beating women and excuses it away by saying he sang about the man he wished he was. Fuck that. Sorry again for the rant and the cursing. Don't feel that it is unfortunate that you haven't read H.P. Lovecraft, view it as a blessing.
Hi Jamie! Firstly, thanks for taking the time to write this all out! Don't apologize haha. I honestly appreciate this comment a whole lot and I think it's worth talking about. It's important to always point out that while one author influenced a generation in a certain way, they are not someone to take examples from and praise without discernment or analysis. I'd be interested to read now and dissect it purely as an analysis on xenophobia and supremacy. I had heard HP Lovecraft was racist but I didn't know the DEPTH of it like you just described and it's probably important we spread this message. The friend who sent me the book mentioned that he was a troubled man with even more troubling belief systems but I truly didn't know the extent. Thank you again for bringing this to light. This is a good jumping off point to continue to promote authors who uplift others and shine a light in the darkness via literature.
@@cupofjae Thanks for replying. It is something that I get rather heated about and I think that has to do with this tendency to explain away the problems surrounding H.P. Lovecraft. It is true that he suffered from some rather serious medical issues, some think he had traumatic brain injury, and then a lot of people try to say he was a product of his time but his depth of racism was an outlier even during his time as well. If there is anything redeeming about him it was that he did eventually admit that science was no longer on his side and that people were not inferior based on race alone, which is a big deal and I will not diminish that. However, he continued to maintain that others were inferior based on culture. Also, I don't know if he was ever on record for supporting Hitler after everyone became aware about the genocide, or just prior. I don't discourage reading H.P. Lovecraft because like I said, I read horror and political science theories written by racists and Nazis because there is a lot of value in understanding the logic and interpretation of racial bias. H.P. Lovecraft is just a super sore spot for me because he is so deeply beloved and so universally praised and I think that is why people don't understand just how profoundly racist he was. I think we assume that someone like that would not be held in such high regard, so if we hear he is troubled or has some racist views, we assume that his racism was more along the lines of the racism of the day, therefore not a defining feature of him or his work. Furthermore, there are endless articles and publications of people trying to justify and excuse away the worst of it because no one wants to hate their hero. No one wants to think of Bill Cosby raping women when they have seen him as a loving grandfather figure from their childhood. H.P. Lovecraft is my childhood hero that I now hate. He was deeply troubled and he did relent on parts of his racism when the entire science community discredited eugenics. But he remained an outspoken and active racist til the day he died. There are accounts of him locking himself away and running frantically away from people in the street because of his overwhelming hate and fear of minorities. It was a vicious and aggressive form of racism, and the belief in anti-humanism of others is the cornerstone of all of his works on cosmic horror. H.P. Lovecraft is not about cosmic horror, it is about racial horror. His racism was a profound part of his life, values, and works. I would just like to see the horror and literary community preface his work for what it is rather than continue breaking their backs bending over backwards to separate it from his beliefs. It is misleading and dishonest to me, and it is also why I feel most people today don't know the depth of H.P. Lovecraft's hate.
The timing of the thunder when you were talking about a boy raise by killers. Everything.
HAHA that's true!!!
Great haul! The Wise Friend looks fantastic! Adding it to my TBR! 👏
I really need to get to it! It sounds amazing!

@@cupofjae Hero of Ages is a bit slow, but I really enjoyed the politics of it all.
I hope you really enjoy The Starless Sea! It was my first read of 2020, and I really enjoyed it. Morgenstern is the queen of atmosphere.
That's super good to know!!! I keep hearing mixed reviews about The Starless Sea and I'm not sure why! I just need to get to the book already haha.

I read the Starless Sea. Great story! Unfortunately the writing style wasn't for me but still a wonderful story!
I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about The Starless Sea. I'm interested to see why everyone is so divided on it haha.
