Saw them open for REO Speedwagon at Richfield, Ohio in 1978. I have seen a TON of concerts but Cheap Trick was tight, they really worked the crowd and had just plain fun onstage. Love this band.
Robin Zander! What a voice! Bun E, Tom and Rick rocking hard! I got the Budokon album in '79 as a 12 year old and rocked it out! Dream Police the year after...they were great!
I saw Cheap Trick Back around 1980 in Quincy, IL. at Quincy University. Played on the gym floor with a mountain of speakers and we were on the gym floor also. My head rang for 3 days it so loud, everytime the bass hit a note you could feel it hitting your chest, people were smoking funny things and drinking. Man those were the days!!!!!!!!!!
I was at Chicagofest that day, but sadly didn't see the show. I was walking behind the stage when Rick did his soundcheck. Two years later I was in the USAF stationed in Okinawa when Cheap Trick came through on a USO tour. I've been a huge fan (regular size actually) ever since. I try to see them every chance I get. Best damn little Rock-N-Roll combo ever!
i don't know a bout now but i have seen them so many times during the 80s and back then i have also seen loads of other bands cheap trick pink Floyd and ZZ top are the very few bands that can make a live show sound like the record out of the studio most bands sound complete different from themselves live
I partied with these guys one night after a show at the Cajun House in Scottsdale AZ... My buddy toured with them and was at Butokan.... Great Band, Fun Guys, Way Talented!
One of my BFF's for many years is a cousin of Robins on her dad's side . Back in the day when we lived in Chicago we visited her aunt in Rockford. She shared stories of him when he was a kid. It was a great experience! D
Chicagofest 81 eh? I WAS there!!! Flew in from London a few days before to stay with family and ended up seeing this band who I saw at Reading Festival (in the UK) a year or so before...they stole the show. One of the best live bands EVER!!!
This is great/ Rick N's clothes and his whole vibe really add to this.... I want to see them play live again asap. The whole band has a great personality
Always loved Rick Nielsen's solos when he straps on about 50,000 guitars and plays a solo on each one. I'm pretty sure I've never seen any other lead guitarist do that at a live show. I've been a guitarist for over 40 years and I've always had a hard time just having the weight of one Les Paul on me. I don't know how he plays live with 4 or 5 guitars around his shoulder.
@@fairymcqueen505Yup me too. Tuesday August 16th 1977 it was the night Paul Stanley told all 14,000 in the audience that Elvis Presley passed away. My brother and me got to the Cow Palace at around 3pm and the line to get into the arena was already way out on Geneva Blvd. Great concert. Became a huge Cheap Trick fan that night!!!! 👍🎸
I was there! This is indeed a famous show. It was part of Chicagofest and was held on the lawn next to the water treatment plant by Navy Pier. No I'm not kidding- the water treatment plant. I cut school with a friend, we took the bus down to the Pier, and got crap seats. The opening band was called "Cold Chisel" or something. The were pelted off stage with cardboard pizza circles flung like frisbees, People were dumping the pizza on the ground and just winging them. Great show- wild memory.
Friken Boy genius there... Rick Neilson, so darn under rated for both singer songwriter and guitar player. credits .. He's got all the Tricks' for sure. Love this!
I love this... I first saw this (and taped it on VHS) on Nightflight back in the day...dubbed it to cassette and use to listen to this constantly. The 80s were great..!
I laughed so hard back in 70s as a teenager at the 1st time seeing Rick looking like Satch from the Bowery Boys! Love it! Love Cheap Trick!❤Robins vocals are just awesome!
The most approachable band on earth. Rick Nielsen absolutly rocks, Bun E Rocks, Robin's singing blends it all together. Where'd Tom go?? See 'em in a small venue. You will not regret it. I vote for Medina Ballroom in Medina, MN. Rick, thanks for the pick and the beers!!!
It's a shame that young people don't get to see this kind of performance anymore. One of the most eye-opening days of my life was back in 04' when a young American Soldier asked me "who plays Stairway to Heaven", I think my knees bucked. I know that some pretty good music reactors have been forced off the 'tube because of CR issues (from doing Eagles reactions). Whoever reads this please understand UA-cam is a great route to get people to hear this awesome music. If you let the knowledge grow the money will come.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 Plenty of people feel that way, you can't play it in a guitar shop. Seriously though, you realize there are adults that have never heard it? There are adults that have never seen the original "Star Wars", not Episode 4, just "Star Wars".
Scott Simpson Yes sir I am the coolest! One one of those concerts, we went to the stage door and waited for them to leave, and they were right there beside us and I patted Bun E Carlos on the back and told him great concert. he said thanks. Good times.
My oh My, I recorded this from "Night Flight" I think, then dubbed it to cassette sometime during the 1980's, missed listening to this Guitar solo! Thanks for posting this! Cheap Trick are a great band to see!
Robin's stage sleeping is hilarious ! I saw these guys in the early 80's and they rocked hugh ! Hard to find a live version of "Downed" from the "In Color" album, though. "Youngsters", fear not, as we old farts are vigilantly trying to obliterate modern "utter crap" at all times. In the words of the immortal Spinal Tap--"These go to 11"...
This is the first time I can remember seeing a right-handed guitarist playing a left-handed Strat -- kind of a mirrored Hendrix approach. For historisans, this clip has to be from 1981, that was the only year Pete Comita played bass for the band.

Going to that same show next week in Tampa!! So stoked, and even tho Cheap Trick isn't top bill on the ticket, they're what I'm most excited to see! Their talent, showmanship, and talent is un-matched. And im eager to see how Rick Nielsen handles the 5-neck at age 60, haha!!

Freeport Illinois native here. Seen them 10 times. Always deliver great fun RnR.
Toughest jobs in the world: 1/ Soldier. 2/ Deep sea fisherman. 3/ Carrier pilot. 4/ Rick Nielsen's guitar technician.
5. Changing bass strings on 10+ 12 string basses. And tuning them each night.
I believe that they still remain the most underrated band of all time!
I think their claim to being so underrated is overrated.
I think so too, seen them before and they kicked ass, really tight band
maybe because the guitarist really wasn't that good at all?
@@banjominer9682 Oh please........
Them and UFO
Everyone goes on about Rick and his guitars, but this band has the trickiest Bass player ever. He's the secret weapon in their sound

His simplicity is his gift. He is the rock rock ‘n’ roll guitar of the highest store, right up there with the likes of Joe Walsh.
This has always been my favorite part of the show. The eight million guitars solo. I miss these days
These guys really bring the fun back to a music group. I bet it's a riot to see them live.
