I saw this show on ACL a few years ago and was blown away how good this band is. I've known of them since at least 1980, and I think they've always written and performed some of the greatest songs anyone ever has. Through the years I've only found bits and pieces of this concert, so thanks for giving us the entire show! "We're all Alright!"

    • @1978garfield
      @1978garfield 2 місяці тому +8

@@bluematrix5001 My understanding is Cheap Trick was doing a series of gigs in Vegas where they were preforming entire Beatles albums live.
The shows were getting great reviews and the band was having a blast.
The venue offered them more dates.
Without discussing with the rest of the band Robin said "No, we can't do it. My daughter is starting kindergarten and I need the month off."
Bun was like "What the hell? We are going to walk away from a series of great gigs because your daughter is starting kindergarten?"
From there Robin decided he didn't like Bun questioning his decision and it came up that Rick had a drummer right there in the house so after 30 some odd years Bun was out and Dax was in.
The band also stopped paying Bun so he had to take them to court.
He says that was pretty much the end of any sort of friendship.
Sad that it ended over something so stupid but I have heard this story multiple times so I suspect it is close to how it went down.
If anyone has newer, better info feel free to correct me.

Yes. His voice has always impressed me, never cracking or not finding the range. I remember seeing them at least twice one year in the late 70s where they opened for both Foreigner and Kansas. I think the constant touring really toughened Robin's voice.

They played a free live show at Houston Tx Astroworld Amusement park in the same late 1970s ...and I happened to see it.
What floored me most of all was Bun E Carlos the drummer.
He was like, I don't need long hair or a 6 neck guitar to be cool. I have the balls to go on stage as your dad the accountant, smoking cigs, as a bad ass drummer and that should work!

First time I saw them was in a little bar in Twin Lakes Wisconsin, early 70's. That was enough to get me hooked.
Prior to their first album they played the Chicago north suburbs and southern Wisconsin.
I had seen them 20 or 30 times before their album debut.
One of the best covers they did was a Fat's Domino song...."ain't that a shame" and always followed by Dylan's "Please Mrs. Henry"
    ........two perfect and memorable renditions.
Those intimate clubs and were some of the best performances I had ever seen.
Bun E. Carlos was the drummer then and through their fame.
He chain smoked through each performance....and is still one of the greatest drummers of all time.
This band was destined for greatness since day one....and always made it look easy....and always fun.

I saw them when they came to town a year ago. They still sound great. Robin can still hit the notes. A lot of older singers can’t. I was definitely impressed. Was a great show.

Your old stuff is still fresh in 2024, the performance of heaven tonight was bliss...it was so pefectly filled with chaotic tension ready to explode at any second...toms bass tone...holy shit, its so unreal to hear on headphones in atmos. Gonna raise hell was the best live performance ive ever heard in all these years, no southern girls but that's ok, no heckling on here, ill save it for the shows...cheap trick is like a fine wine, time makes it better, i cant believe how good this performance was...yeah i know its all the sound engineering, bs its all you guys

Back in the late 70s - early 80s my best friend's oldest sister "knew" Robin.
Met him once, didn't know he was. He was just a normal guy.

Somebody has a video of the group in concert from earlier this summer (2014). I don't know if it was a bad night for them, but this video blows the newer one out the door. With the new concert, Robin sounds like his voice is just about shot. and the backing vocals are not mixed as good as they are here...but this was 2011.

Saw them open for Golden Earring way back in the day. Bun E was chain smoking thru their whole set, Rick had portable stairs about six steps high front and center on stage for a couple of songs. They closed their set with "Ain't That a Shame"

When I used to watch Cheap Trick live , I would always get excited and wonder, "What guitars is Rick Nielsen going to take out and play???!!!!" 😂 Ricks guitars are like celebrity characters to join in the fun!!!! LOL 😂 His weirdo custom explore shaped guitars!!! Etc. His 5 neck monster guitar, his "Uncle Dick" double neck guitar!!!! His Hamer 8 string mandocello guitar!!!! 😊😊😊 Long live Cheap Trick!!!! Raise Hell!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Looks like Alexandr like a bunch of cool music. Caught cheep trick in Johnson City, Tennessee 1988ish. Security chick patted me down, made me throw away my 1/2 pint of Southern Comfort in my waste band. God was she good looking! Still can’t believe she made me do it. I left, threw it off the balcony thing at the entrance, didn’t break and I retrieved it afterwards))). Youth!
