This is but one of the strongest cases for the myth of free will. People think they have it, but they don't. Realizing people have no free will allows you to attempt to think about their lives that they did not control. It doesn't mean nobody can be held responsible for what they do (this is a popular slippery slope fallacy that is often used for those who think free will is a thing).

It really is amazing. Pure arrogance. Such a high level of stupidity even before trying to hire a hitman. He was a successful doctor and could have lived very well, provided that they had some control over their spending. He didn't have to resort to over billing. Now I'm sure he has lost everything. Ira and Kelly deserve each other.

I'm sure the car salesman hired to carry out the hit had to ponder internally, "What exactly is it about me that makes me look like a hitman?" Kudos to him for remaining cool enough to not give away the game, and contact the police, instead. I probably would have blurted out, "Wtf?? ...NO." Which would have only allowed them to contact someone else, who might have actually followed through...and made it harder for the police to track.

I often fail to find the humor in these type situations. I do have a sense of humor but garnering a steady audience by ridiculing criminals with major major character flaws like hubris, that seems almost criminal in itself as it focuses people on schadenfreude and the enjoyment of what are really tragic situations of pain, of callous criminality, of evil. I think it is evidence, sometimes, of people wanting to just look down on fools,
like,. "Ha ha ha, we would never be implicable in any wrongdoing."
But consider the Stanley Milgram experiments and what happened at Abu Ghraib. . . And simply consider the very common tendency to project, which is more common than most people realize.

The only time I can remember that a person has paid the price for trying to hire a hitman was the case of Dahlia Dippolito. This happened in 2008. She went through 3 trials and was finally sent to prison about 5-6 yrs ago and I don't think she'll get out for another 10 yrs. She spent all that time waiting for what turned out to be a conviction, which must weighed on her. On house arrest, she had a kid that she won't be raising (thank God) What a long drawn out wreck. I'm glad her husband survived this ordeal and is doing well, from what I hear.

There are 2 things that are different from what I know about the original story: 1. I don't remember the 'open relationship' part between Ira and his wife; I just remember hearing a recording of his wife yelling at Ira on being on vacation with his mistress while pretending to be somewhere else 2. For those fake assault pictures, I remember the cops supposedly hired big time Hollywood artists (from some famous movie) and they were gloating over it on Dateline or 48 Hours.

What a crew! No one in the story, with the exception of the car salesman, appears to have any redeeming qualities. The podiatrist, although wealthy, is greedy to the point of committing insurance fraud. The girlfriend is attaching herself to a wealthy boyfriend. The wife, although well-educated, is unproductive and lazy and is as as greedy as her estranged husband as shown by her blackmailing him. I doubt that there was any real feeling Ira and Kelly. He kept her around because it allowed him to keep his wife at bay while having a main squeeze and she stayed around because of the financial goodies he provided to her. Kelly had her own sense of greed because snuffing out Susan would have put her in line to lay claim to Ira's wealth.
