Rig Smackdown: Rhett Shull vs. Zach Broyles
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 тра 2024
- Rhett and Zach end almost every episode of Dipped In Tone with a rig dip-where they discuss and rate a guitar, amp, and pedal setup submitted by a listener-but this time, they’re assembling and critiquing dream rigs of their own, on a budget.
They each get to brainstorm a $1000 rig followed by a $10,000 rig, using toys and prices found on Reverb. When you’ve only got 10 Benjamins to spend, what pieces of kit should you prioritize? Rhett throws most of his budget behind his guitar and amp head, with just a few bucks left for a bargain-bin cab and a couple cheap pedals, but Zach spreads his grand out fairly evenly, opting for affordable offerings from Epiphone and Vox for his base tone.
Things get spicy in the upper range. Rhett takes Zach to task over prioritizing a $1300 vintage TS-style pedal, but they both opt for high-dollar amps from the same manufacturer for their ten-grand stage setup.
Who created the better rig at each price point? Which components did they fumble? And what would you do with each budget? Let us know in the comments.

Rhett's $1000 rig felt like drunk driving to me. If that makes sense
Love it
What I've learned from this rig smackdown is that you can troll Rhett any price point thanks to the Tube Screamer.
For shits and giggles Rhett should just buy that Peavy Cab
“someone go buy this, its legitimately good, they sound amazing” - Rhett talking about a tube screamer with a base and treble instead of a tone.
Okay you got me, I’ll play:
$1,000 rig
- Peavey Classic 50 4x10: found one at 331
- Squier Paranormal Tele Thinline (dual P90): found one at 380
- Line 6 HX One: 290
$10,000 rig
- Two Local custom made amps (France & Belgium shout outs to Kelt, Invaders, Val Martins, etc)- 3k to 4k
- Local Luthier built Guitar, to specs - 3k to 4k
- Jam Pedals Pink Flow - 1k
- Choice of Kingsley pedals (Juggler, Bard, etc) - 2k
- Stereo / wet dry management thing (HX one again?)
Give work and money to your local craft people when you can, right?
I like your style
Love seeing the duo episodes again guys! The interviews are great every once in a while but the duo shows are awesome to see
I love how Zach’s actual current rig breaks the $10,000 limit
his current rig is literally about 10k in board alone. +6k on amp, 20k on guitar.... I ain't hating though. love me some Zack. good for him. he's earned it. American dream shit baby
Neither am I, it is astounding how quick it adds up.
every rig with a two rock is automatically over 10k 😭
It’s a lot more than that.
Quilter Aviator Cub UK Combo Amp: $525
Danelectro '59M NOS Guitar: $370
Danelectro Fab Delay: $30 used.
Moreley Mark Tremonti Wah: $75 used.
Expensive rig:
Quilter Labs Aviator Mach 3 head with 300 watt 1x12 Cabinet: $1448
Gretch Black Penguin with Filtertrons: $4500
Which leaves $4052 for pedals and pedantics. I'm half tempted to toss in another Gretch Duo-Jet with D'Armond pickups. Most of what I want is there.
Rick Turner Model 1 $5500, Koch The Greg amp $2500 H90 $800 Diaz Texas mid, low, high boost $250 Snarling Dogs WAH $250 A 5 watt amp maybe Skylark or a new Supro since I love running 2 amps
Back in the day, when two aircraft sections didn’t quite fit together, they’d often just hammer them to how they are supposed to fit. If you can do that with planes, you can do that with trems
You get us
Rhett cannot deal with cheap gear. It’s kinda funny
$200 fuzz?
@@joetoe9207 What is the question here?
@@matmarchi A $200 fuzz is inexpensive.
indeed. And the disgust face is great!@@joetoe9207
The fireworks were freaking incredible. That HAS to be a thumbnail for a video.
Please, make that video, it would be awesome. Just seeing you jam together would be awesome
I would love to see a rig shootout. Please get that cab Rhett I’m dying to see how it holds up.
Seconded
Crazy, I sold that Novo to the guy who's listing Rhett picked. Incredible Guitar.
That Ibanez DE7 just sitting on the desk brings back lots of memories, I loved that pedal and it's the only one I really miss since it broked down on me
If i was doing the 10k rig, I'd go wet/dry. Deluxe reverb reissue, Friedman litte sister combo, standard Gibson es 335, and an American tele. Minus tax and buying all new,I'd still have $1100 left over for pedals.
"Have you got an owl in your basement?"
This is the kind of hard-nosed guitar journalism that I tune in for.
Please...buy the cab, Rhett. I need to hear the truth.
There is a part of me that doesn't want to like the Katana line but for a cheap rig they really give you a ton of tone options. Didn't really try any until the GO came out and couldn't resist at $120 The Katana Go would be amazing to bring guitar shopping too IMO for having a consistent sound in different shops!
My actual under-$1000 rig (and I do gig with it):
Weber 1×10 X-Cab loaded with ceramic Michigan (100 watts)-$400
Hotone Loudster-$125 (used)
Hofner Shorty-$130 (store demo)
DiMarzio D-Activator-$90
2 push-pull pots (series/parallel and treble bleed)-$20
Mossky DEC Boost-$30
Donner Alpha FX (used)-$75
Ernie Ball Ambient Delay-$120(used)
Have to say, that intro is BOSS 🤩 Really grows on you.
Crestwood over Wilshire just cause the mini humbuckers sound amazing to me especially the neck pickup!
Rhett needed to look at Supro Delta King 12. Or Peavey Classic 50
Suggestion: I have a friend that plays pro up in Montreal and i was surprise to see him using a jazz chorus. Suppose to be a good "pedal platform". What are your thoughts on that and what makes a amp a good pedal platform. Thanks
Those Rhett fireworks were perfectly timed 🤣
Going with new from Sweetwater: $1K rig:Epi Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Jr $549/Bugera V22 $450 - $10K rig: Gretsch Steve Wariner G6120T-SW $4100/Magnatone Panoramic head $3300/2 Magnatone 1x12 cabinets $2600 Buy used and you'll have plenty of money for pedals.
They should definitely do a follow up video where they build the rigs
My $1,000 rig: Yamaha Pacifica 112J, Peavey Classic 30 combo, TC Electronic Mojomojo overdrive, TC Electronic Zeus overdrive, EHX Green Russian Big Muff Pi reissue, Mooer Trelicopter (tremolo).
I’m a little disappointed that when Zach was talking about the $1000 Rhett rig he didn’t say your “$1000 gig Rhett-y rig” cause puns
The drivetrain has ALREADY gone up in average price since this was filmed… amazing what a video like this does
Great topic!! 😉 another fun episode!
My first really good guitar was an Epiphone es175 and its absolutely the best best guitar to pick up anytime and noodle around!
Hmmm. Two Rock love-in....What happened to the Port City amp ?
Two things I can confirm:
1. The TR Studio Sig is a killer amp. I wish i could try it with some 10s because I'm sure it's a killer setup as well.
2. Most Les Pauls are probably a fine choice (I'm talking after things are QC'd as good,) but finding the right one that's special to you is an amazing feeling. Lucked out and got a BOTB R9 weighing in at a shockingly light 7.4lbs of ultra light mahogany.
I kind of did the $1k rig. Fender American standard with custom shop fat 50s for $800, and a modded lacquered tweed blues jr with a Texas heat speaker for $300. Still have my big muff fuzz pedal from HS. Ik it’s $1100 but I’m pretty damn thrilled with the quality of gear I got for the money.
Epiphone Riviera w/ mini humbuckers- about $600. Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 which includes decent reverb and built in LT Drive circuit - about $400 used, I got mine for $350 at a local shop. That’s all I want or need 98% of the time.
Under 1K: Guild Surfliner HH in shoreline mist, $269, '66 Guild Thunder 1 amp $550 (or Supro Thunderbolt for same price), Nux NDD-7 tape echo (with reverb) $120, Ibanez FZ-7 fuzz $59.49.
Under 10K: Gibson Firebird Bicentennial edition natural $5276, 1962 Blonde Bandmaster $2650, Reissue Blonde/oxblood Fender Reverb Unit $1000, Maestro PS1-A phaser $400, JHF1 Fuzz Face $125, WEM Copicat $530.40.
Zach from the past is in my head. When Rhett mentioned Epiphone I immediately thought of the Wilshire, then Zach pulls that up...
Love the TB and Shakedown shirt, Rhett
Affinity Tele ($150), EVH 5150 Iconic 15 watt combo ($525), mxr chorus ($65), ana echo ($60), Keeley Comp ($90), blues driver ($70)
Total = $960
10mins - I call that "impact technology".
£1000 - Katana 100w Artist mk2 @ £500. Epiphone Les Paul with EMG's £300 second hand. All you need.
10000 - Bluguitar amp1 with all the trimmings. 1960's reissue Thinline Tele. RE2 and a Big Sky.
Could be completely wrong here but isn’t it mainly the Fender Japan builds that you need to conscious of for partscaster builds and fitting new parts?
$1000 Rig:
Squier Classic Vibe ‘60s Telecaster Custom - $340
Fender Blues Jr - $350
JHS Morning Glory - $145
MXR Carbon Copy - $89
Ibanez TS Mini (Sorry Rhett) - $50
Grand Total: $974
Maybe a little safe, but I play country music primarily and this rig would absolutely get me through a gig. I thought about a boost in place of the Tube Screamer, and that might still be the way to go, but I like having multiple drive flavors to stack.
Check out the McCon-O-Wah.....there are a couple on reverb for sale. The guy that made these was an old co-cowrker of mine. He also makes the Bell-Tone strat pickups. Tommy Katona has some demo videos on you tube. They sound really good.
I think I'd make a Squier J.Mascis Jazzmaster and a Laney CUB-SUPER12 the basis of my $1,000 rig. Choosing a $10,000 rig would actually be harder for me, because I've never had the chance to try the kind of custom shop/boutique gear that large a budget would buy.
I'd definitely like to see you put together these rigs for real. 👍
I would love to see you guys actually build it. I was actually thinking that just as you said it.
Rhett my pedal board is like your friends. I don’t gig. I have 7 drive/distortion/fuzz pedals all on one board along with a reverb, delay and a A/B splitter. One amp has an effects loop with reverb, delay, tremolo, looper, etc…. It’s all nicely organized and definitely not easily moved lol.
My current $1000 rig
G&l tribute asat thinline $350
Blackstar studio 10 el84 $250
Mxr variac fuzz $50
Boss overdrive/distortion $50
Boss chorus ensemble $50
Boss digital delay $50
Electro harmonix oceans reverb $50
Donner looper/drum machine $90
Got $60 bucks left! All used on marketplace except the guitar and amazon donner looper. Fun episode, I think the vox was solid option, peavey and blackstar studio line up, used crate tube amps, or the tube traynor combos, and blues jr all seem to fit the bill. I’d also look at Timmy and klon clones for OD choices.
Whoops blackstar studio 10 el34
$1000 Rig, off of reverb right now:
Epiphany ‘61 SG Standard w/Maestro $411
Bad Cat Cougar 50 $350
NUX NDD-7 Tape Echo $138
Dunlop FFM2 Germanium Mini Fuzz Face $100
$1 left over!
$10,000 Rig, off of reverb right now:
Gibson Murphy Lab 1961 Les Paul/SG CME Spec $3,800
1966 Vox AC30 $4,995
Walrus Meraki Delay $600
Lovepedal Dover Drive $175
1981 Maxon BDC-01 Bass Digital Chorus (trust me) $135
EHX 1970s Screaming Bird $200
$95 for a round of beers!
Dude, what about a Peavey Classic 50!!
Totally, that or the Classic 30 would be a solid amp for a sub-$1000 rig.
For sure, less can be more. At 10k, Blowing it out on the guitar and amp, and then having a few great pedals makes perfect sense. I have taken this approach with my own rig. Fuzz, Delay (looking for a different/better one?), Strymon Flint into a great amp on the edge of breakup. Use the guitar volume to vary the gain. Maybe will a Wah, if put the time into learning how to use it better? Maybe a boost/OD? But, really, the right Fuzz cleaned up, has sparkle on the cleans.
BTW love the character lo-fi tones Rhett does!
Since you guys seem to both like two-rock, I would love to hear your thoughts or comparisons to amplified nation. People say they blow two-rock away.
Love the vid. Lets do this occasionally at different price levels. 2,500, 5K, etc.
A 100w fender champion combo can get you through a lot with all the voice options. Great for stage volume
My rig would fall into the $1000 budget. $300 for used Jet City 20w combo with reverb, $250 for used Gretsch Jr Jet P90 neck/humbucker bridge, $80 Danelectro Big Spender rotary pedal, $175 lucked out on 1977 Morely Power Wah Fuzz, $150 Mojo Hand Iron Bell Fuzz, $40 Behringer Vintage Delay.
Yes! 💯 please set these rigs up! Def include the Peavy!
Yes, want to hear the rigs. Also, a $4000 rig would be awesome. Seems like that price point would match what a lot of the viewers play. BTW, nice call on the Honey Bee. I can't hardly play my Strat without my One Control BJF Honey Bee. Just part of the guitar's sound now.
I like rhett way more now😂
Can we also get a video with rhett doing anything with metal gear. I really think it would open a new world to him
to turn off those effects, while using the camera, there is a camera icon on the top bar, make sure "reactions" is turned of ( grey instead of green)
Make sure to leave it on green!
4:58 I think it took every bone in Zach's body when asked what he thinks about the Antigua finish to not say "It looks like a**" :)
I had an ORIGINAL Antigua strat brand new when they first came out in 79.
Curve ball: JBL PA Speaker ($300), walrus ACS1 (~$300), squire Tele (~$350), and a TC Electronic delay ($50). Bedroom tones and go to the gig and even amplify the other bandmates
Bugera V22
Harley Benton JA- Baritone
Hologram Chroma Console
Wampler Tumnus Mini
nothing wrong with the AC15 C1 - I stuck some NOS Mullards in mine, have gigged it 100 times, loud enough with smooth overdrive/crunch. It doesn't have the head room of a Fender, but it's reliable and very good.
This very much felt like Guys Grocery Games. Loved it.
Great episode! I liked Rhett's
Fun ride guys
Cheap:
quilter cub combo: $500
Sire s3: 320
Mad professor supreme: $190
$10 over whoops
O.K., you said post a rig. This one isn't trying to max out the $10,000 or fit in the $1000. It's just a rig that I think fits in with what you two chose.
PRS Studio S2 $1800
Tone King Royalist MKIII with the 2x12 cab $3700
Lovepedal MK III Fuzz $120
Redbeard Effects Angry Rhubarb overdrive (because of the awesome tone section) $250
Universal Audio Galaxy '74 Tape Echo & Reverb (don't know enough about it but I WANT it) $290
Nice Tudor gmt Rhett, can’t make out what watch Zach is wearing but looks to be another nice choice
I'd love to see the $1000 rigs lol especially a review of if they actually could use them including that peavey cab lol (which as a peavey fan, I'm sure it sounds fine)
I bought a Mesa Solo Rect O Verb 50 for 800. It feels like such a steel. Under rated sleeper for sure.
You could probably go to Sweetwater and do this type of rig build. That would be sick! 😝
We’re hatching a scheme
For a 2k rig, I'd probably go with that Sovtek. Maybe with a Harley Benton 2x12 Creamback for 300. Either that or the Marshall ST20H Studio 20 JTM or Plexi, for about 850, with a 1x12 Celestion V30, for about 150. Then a Vintera I 60s Modified Telecaster (Sea Foam), 650 or the previous version of the Epiphone 59 Les Paul. Plumes, Rat (or TC Magus), EHX Octavix, 200. JHS Series 3 reverb, 100. TC Bucket Brigade Delay. 50.
Rhett takes the 1K rig (Peavey FTW). Zach takes the 10k (I have that SG in Pelham Blue, it’s amazing).
Personally, I'd have gone with the Tone King Imperial Mk II instead of either Two Rock and used the difference for a nice acoustic guitar or a second electric guitar. Either of their $10k rigs would be awesome though. I think Zach definitely wins the $1k rig just because of Rhett's cab choice.
I love brand blogs. UA has one that is really good.
Got one word for you boys Peavey
Antigua = Avocado 🥑 burst
“And I have $1 left… “. Story of my life.
I don't think they make the ktr anymore.
Dude I want to see Zach meet a real life modular synth and engage with it. I would love an episode where Rhett teaches Zach why the Moog sound studio is dope and not stupid.
Great story.. guy from leek in UK where I reside was filming robben fords dojo videos. The man owns the world's dearest amp yet still asked to borrow my mates standard deluxe after a trip to a London argos for a practise amp proved unsuitable.
Classic Vibe 60s Strat 250
Supro Delta King 12 425
Amp foot switch 50
DOD 250 75
3 series delay 70
EH Mod 11 90
Total 960
I could work with that easily.
you have to buy that cab
My $1k rig: prs se ce24 satin, supro delta king 12, catalinbread echorec
As for the 10k rig: clapton cut explorer and a avri 52 tele (bc I heard on this podcast always bring 2 guitars to a gig), 2 Mesa Boogie TA-30’s, a T-Rex Echorec. Simple enough but should pack a punch. I have no experience with big amps so I stuck with what I do know.
Echorec is awesome! Love mine.
1k rig: squier CV HSS strat, boss katana 100w, pod go in the loop (all used i guess)
If I don't have a hollow body yet . . . do I get that Epi. or a Gretsch 5420? Hmmmm
Man I’m loving the new Epi stuff.
You're right about blogging and seo
By the time Zach is 40 he'll have modded the Braz burst to its final form, that's good to be a good justification for getting in advance, right?
Video incoming ;)
I would love take you both on $1000 challenge. $350 / G&L tribute ASAT Special, $450 HX Stomp, $200 Tech 31 Power Engine 60 (powered speakers) ... Avg costs here, I've seen the G&L for $275, Stomp for $400 and this pwrd speaker and other at $150. So, I could go lower and truthfully I could go direct to the board and get another guitar. You two have been buying high end gear for a spell, ha.
The Vox amps are just fine.
Sooooooooo interested to actually hear Rhett’s $1000 rig!!!! Is it gigable and could you make it sound good!!???
Why didn’t anyone try peavy amps for the $1k budget? For the money, they are great!
I feel like cheaping out (to an extreme degree) on your speaker cab is going to nullify whatever benefit you were going to get by spending more money on the amp head.
Snarling Dogs WAH!
Pete Cornish NG-3.
$1000 rig = acoustic guitar (used) for a few hundred, then spend the rest on lessons, maybe a couple of books (Chord Chemistry, good theory book, etc).
You forgot the pedal power supplies and the instrument cables. Oh no!!
