I don't know very much about pedal building, but through my life of working in retail and seeing how logistics works, paying the over-head, paying employees, R&D, marketing, etc. The value is not always associated with how much something cost to fabricate. There is also the companies' reputation, the product's perceived value, and how much it sells for on the used market. I get the impression that the ability to build more units at a much lower cost, and flooding the market with pedals without doing very much marketing is the advantage that offshore companies have over other builders. As Zach stated, the ability to buy pieces by the thousands (which typically brings down the cost per unit) as opposed to buying from suppliers in batches, has a significant impact on how much a pedal will sell for. Plus, a lot of the smaller builders have to take care of selling and shipping themselves and don't have the benefit of having retailers take care hat end of the business.
I work in the electronics assembly industry, and the components are definitely all going SMD. The fact is that SMD materials and techniques are to the point that they are as reliable as through hole and cost a fraction to produce, especially at scale.
That lawn chair is impressive. Every one I've known died before Y2k from having the material blown to bits from UV exposure. Seriously bravo to that rig. I'd crush a Marb Red with that person.

Boutique is something that has been made with the best conponents, has something unique that makes it way better than the competence and has a high cost and is highly required. Thats boutique.
Just an idea, but you guys should capitalize on the meme and try a “does it do the thing” segment weekly. it’d be sorta like shill of the week, but it’d be more of a spotlight on a product that either does an incredibly unique thing, or a super broad sound that a lot of the people chase after. examples could be stuff like showing how a fuzz face gets you the Hendrix sound, or how to using certain delays/amps can get you the sound of The Edge. idk, just a thought I had that’s free of copyright lol
Ides of March were the equivalent to 15th of March in the Roman calendar. It also happens to be the day when Julius Caesar was stabbed multiple times and killed.
Hudson makes awesome pedals. Zack, you should definitely get a Broadcast, but also try to get the Sidecar, which is a tube screamer circuit with a Neve two bands EQ, and germanium clipping. Awesome and very underrated pedal sadly... and I m like Rhett, usually not a TS lover!
About that rig you Dipped. Disappointed you missed the 1” chip brush in the bottom right hand side of the gun case/pedal board. Also I could be wrong but I think the red 55 gallon drums are high octane/racing fuel.
How the pedal business works: You need 2 things, a sharp knife and a knife sharpener. Sharpest blade in the biz wins. It’s cutthroat out there! In all seriousness, I’ve never seen so much collaboration and rooting for one another in the pedal industry than at this very time.
Rick having rants about content being blocked is annoying but it is also hugely educational, creating UA-cam content is not easy and people need to know that, hell if it were easy everyone would do it, also what I find interesting is that Steve Lukather said to Rick that when there are copyright strikes the artist is not even aware because he absolutely supports what Rick is doing as it is educational and also making older music popular again.
The blocking is soooo stupid. The IG video of the dude skateboarding, drinking juice and vibing to the Fleetwood Mac song shot that song and album so far up the streaming “charts” because it introduced it to a new listener base. The music industry and all the old players have no clue how to make it work for themselves in the post CD days
Sometimes it can be frustrating to pay a lot ($200-$300) of money for a pedal, but if it’s a REALLY COOL pedal, I don’t mind. Collectibility, Vintage aren’t considerations for me. I will definitely go for a boutique, enhanced clone, before I would consider picking up a CRAZY ($600+) priced Vintage pedal. I have had a Fuzz addiction. I probably will sell off some to finance some recording gear? I have NO PROBLEM paying a craftsman for their trade. Buy cheap, buy twice!
Whoever complains about the price of pedals has no idea about business. Pedal makers are there to make a living as well as make a profit, its not a charity. They not only have overheads, marketing, stock, R and D costs for the next product etc to pay for but they are also taking a risk. If their product fails to sell they are left with debts and possible bankruptcy. I don't hear people complaining about the price of coke (any variety) or beer. I bet there are not many pedal manufacturers driving round in Aston Martins. God bless pedal makers for they shall inherit the world.

Hi Zach! In one of the episodes of the podcast you said you have a degree in psychology. How did you learn so much about electronics and pedals? I would like to get into pedal designing and building myself so I am really curious to see how you got the knowledge. Love the content by the way! Thanks
As someone that also watched Blown Away, it's painful, and they edit it so some of the artists come across as complete dick bags. Another thing I laughed and cringed at was their title for the episode winner... best in blow. I generally enjoy watching shows that feature craftspeople making things, so Forged In Fire is over the top with the testing, but it's still cool watching people shape steel. They don't have drama between contestants and judges, and in many episodes they are helping each other. Also thanks for the talk and insight on pedal pricing. I'm in the camp that doesn't get angry or offended at pricing. There are so many factors and end product is so much more than its individual bag of parts. If it's something I "really need", then I'll save for it. If not, then I just enjoy the demos and move on with life. There's so much wasted energy wrapped up in people being upset by the price of something. A single pedal company is not a monopoly, so we are not required to buy that one thing being sold at a price we don't like
Forgive me if this has already been covered in the comments, but both y'all need to dig into the Hudson Broadcast a little deeper. They also have transformers in them, and that seems to be a pretty big part of the tone. And start with the regular, not the AP; he said he never used the higher gain setting so they just removed it to make his a little simpler? I'm sure you'll ask the man himself when you get to talk to him. :)
While, I agree that Rick has every right to make complain videos about some of videos being blocked...it's business. The copyright owners also have the right to have those videos pulled down and blocked...it's also just business. How they want their product used and where it's up to them...at least for now. Who is right in this case is up for debate, I see strong arguments on both sides.
Why we limiting ourselves to the catholic baptism version of dipped in tone, I want that southern Baptist full immersion in tone 😆 if you know you know.

I am of two minds about Rick's copyright woes. On the one hand I understand his frustration and our copyright system is broken, expecially UA-cam's system. But OTOH Rick is choosing to make videos centered around other people's IP. So to me his complaining smacks a bit of a lion tamer complaining the lions keep biting him. He could avoid it completely if he really wanted to. Point being yeah the system is jacked but also if you get in the lion cage the lions have their own agenda.
It does seem like he is rolling the dice everything he features a cover. Maybe the "copyright rant" videos are an attempt to reclaim some money from the hours of work that was lost with the claim/block.
