  • Rhett returns from Europe to chat with “guitar player’s guitar player” Sadler Vaden of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. The trio jump right into their takes on the whole Bad Monkey saga, then dig into a detailed interview about how a Crazy Horse concert changed Sadler’s life, some tips for guitarists (spoiler alert: rhythm guitar is important!), and they discuss the band’s upcoming release, Weathervanes, unpacking the writing and recording process.
    When the conversation turns to gear (you knew it was coming), Sadler answers questions about his gig rig, shouts out his favorite guitar stores to hit up on tour, and then it’s time to dip a rig (cue the Tube Screamer Talk).
    Along the way, we find out if Oasis is really Sadler’s favorite band and what kind of U2 concert he really wants to see (hey Bono and Edge, you guys listening?), and talks about what it was like to see Prince live (and how far he drove).
    Finally, Rhett shares the improbable story of his newest acquisition, a Tascam 388.
    Thanks to Sweetwater for sponsoring this episode.

    I've seen Jason and the 400 Unit twice in the last year and both were fantastic. Sadler is a monster, and you can tell he really appreciates Mike Campbell because he kinda feels like this generation's Mike Campbell. Perfect tone and he can do anything, but always plays the perfect part

    Great interview! Would love to hear Sadler's take on Jason Isbell being under appreciated as a guitarist. I think it is partly because he is such a great singer songwriter - and partly because he has Sadler in the band. Make no mistake - Jason is a MONSTER guitarist in his own right!

    54:44 This. Lol😂 Mister Vaden is obviously a very smart, experienced and insightful gentleman because he’s saying something I’ve been banging on about forever. You can tell he spends more time onstage playing guitar than online thinking about playing guitar. We have a tendency to get so granular in our tone-fretting because we don’t get to do enough note-fretting. 😮see what I did there!? 😅
    I’m as guilty as anyone here. Or at least I used to be. Any guitarist with a 9-5 that ain’t actually playing the guitar spends an awful lot of time thinking about playing the guitar. It’s natural to obsess about signal paths and buffers and tone clarity. Maybe it’s just because I’m fortunate enough to have dialed in my ideal sound and tones but I’ve long been free from that worry. I’m gonna go play now. 🎉❤

      I think my favorite pedal is still my BD2. Mine is old enough that I was able to get Analogman to mod it. It is also my favorite mod ever. I never quite got there with a TS - but it's me my amp, not the TS. That said: I am a huge SD1 fan and like that it's a bit more aggression and adore it blowing up the front of the BD2. If I have not given the Internet reasons to eye roll, I'll add: I still use a EHX Soul Food as a boost at the end of the chain (and I like its buffer on). So, what do I know!

    While I'm not the biggest fan, Arctic Monkeys I think could be considered largest rock act coming out of Britain in the past couple decades. I mean several of the songs off their album AM (released in 2013) have over a billion plays on Spotify. They have an iconic attitude and distinct style too. Now they're going through that experimental phase and fell of the radar a little, but still...probably the closest thing to a huge British rock act like Oasis in recent times.

      As the owner of that pedal... I've actually travelled with it a bunch over the 20 years I've owned it, flown across Canada, took it on cruise ships internationally... But I've got limited experience with TSA in the states, so maybe things would be different with them vs Canadian airlines? That said, yeah, the last few years it has been a "locally only" pedal for me - mostly because they are becoming so valuable! Believe it or not, I bought mine, back in the day, used for a mere $35!
      The "rig" I had dipped was really my "local shows only" rig over all, with gear I love/am super comfortable with because I've played hundreds (maybe even thousands) of gigs with it and it has never let me down. But that stuff is showing its age too, so I do have other pedals that I'm more likely to take out if I'm going to be on the road for a while.

    IF you go tube screamer the cusack screamers are the best I've encountered. I see that as a tool more than an instrument, it's hard to criticize people's use of tools, over their stylistic decisions of an instrument which are fun to tease about. But if someone is saying man that tube screamer IS my sound, I internally roll my eyes.
    I didn't really "get" it until a gig at a larger than normal space and I kept turning the cusack on to just not feel lost in the mix. Years later it was used on nearly every guitar track just because of its position in the mix and interaction with the amp.
    MXR distortion 2 is my stylistic choice, best OD. Madebymike pedals UK. Check him out.

    Sadler is such a cool guy, opinionated but I prefer his straight up honest talk about bands and concert production or overproduction as it were. He backs up what he says because from the clips I have seen the 400 unit is a killer live band that knows how to play their instruments and get great sounds. U2 with little or no production just playing their songs would work because their songs are iconic. They did strip it down for their documentary on the Disney channel but what Sadler wants is a full rock show without all of the techno wizardry. I totally agree!!!! It would save the band and the fans some money. And there are no bands like Oasis that just go up and play their music with no theatrics and just own the stage. They were and still are the kings of that. There are a handful of really good bands out there but they either don’t rock hard enough or don’t have the songs. Oasis has all of it, like them or not. Go ahead and write a song like Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger, or Champagne Supernova. Even their B sides album is full of hits.

    • @hughesp
      @hughesp Рік тому +1

      As the person who's rig got dipped in this episode - I'd say the same. It DID take time to figure out the setup kinks, but it is rock solid now. I've had strats, jazzmasters, etc and none of them have stayed in tune as well. The trick is making sure there's no friction points, the nut is cut well, the bridge slots filed slightly more round / wide (like being setup for a high gauge of strings), and then using nut sauce. I also have a faber bridge on there which doesn't have any play/doesn't rock (where as the original nashville would have not worked well with the bigsby) Oh, and making sure to really stretch out the strings! There's lots of places one can go wrong, but one it is worked out, it works REALLY well. And, as Rhett suggested, it makes the guitar more balanced on an SG! I've heard (but not experienced) worse tuning problems with a Lyre, so I think I'd stick with the Bigsby!

      @@hughesp cool! As far as restringing goes(I’m sure you know this), grab the ball end & bend the string around your finger. It should go right on the peg & string up as easy as any other system.

      @@whenvioletsturngrey9597 I use a set of needle nose pliers to pre-bend, but yeah, same idea!

    Z,
    Time to explain the difference between a power supply transformer in a pedal and a signal transformer.

    • @hughesp
      @hughesp Рік тому

      I mean, a transformer is a transformer, it's just understanding the whole idea of impedance, ratios, and application.
      A power supply transformer (particularly for a pedal) is at a ratio to bring the input voltage down - for example, in a deluxe memory man, bringing the voltage from 120V on one side down to the internal voltage of the pedal (I think 24V in that pedal). So you have a ratio of 5:1. You also need to make sure that said transformer can handle the voltage and current draw of the application.
      For a signal transformer, you are talking about the audio signal passing through instead of the power. Most of the time, this is about changing the impendence/resistance of part of the circuit, OR, simply about isolating the signal electronically. So an audio transformer may even have a ratio of 1:1, if it is just about isolation.
