How Chris Buck Went From YouTube to the Royal Albert Hall
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 чер 2024
- On this episode of Dipped in Tone, Rhett and Zack are joined by Wales-born guitarist Chris Buck. Buck is gearing up for a string of US tour dates with his fast-rising rock band Cardinal Black, including a date at Nashville’s Basement East after the original venue sold-out within a few hours.
Buck starts off digging into the details of his custom Yamaha Revstar and why he chose the versatile guitar over better-known offerings from legacy brands. Buck’s rise has been nearly meteoric: He started off posting videos on Facebook and Instagram before his wife suggested he give UA-cam a try. His channel now counts 226,000 subscribers, thanks to his popular Friday Fretworks videos. But as Buck explains, his content is a tool to help fund his original music-a very successful tool.
Still, it’s not all sunshine. Buck details how he and his band navigate the brutal economics of touring, including some horror stories of how they ended up losing money on merch sales. Later, we learn how Buck built his signature playing style-mostly by ear and by accident. “I don’t think anyone has ever ended up sounding like themselves through sitting down and going ‘Right, im gonna try to sound unique,’” he says. “It just happens over time.”
He’s gone from UA-cam to the Royal Albert Hall, but Buck reveals a quiet concern that he’s peaked too early. What do Rhett and Zach make of that fear? Tune in.

I have a massive respect for Chris for the sole reason that despite his ability he plays to the song.
He has Massive chops, but never ruins the song by trying to over flex them.
That’s rare these days.
Chris Buck is without a doubt one of the most exciting guitarists to come out of the UK in a decade or two!
He's also a really nice guy to boot.
Chris is one of my favorite modern players. His phrasing is gorgeous and so recognizably Chris Buck. That thing he does where he bends a note and then slides up to another bend is just... chef's kiss. Dude has given me a lump in my throat more that a few times with this playing.
It’s refreshing hearing from a actual musician that occasionally makes UA-cam videos. Awesome player. Great video.
Chris seems to exude intelligence. He is intellectual in his conversation and his playing. I enjoy hearing him explain his points of view
His phrasing is clean on both talk and guitar :)
Chris is so good at the art of “talking”. I know that sounds weird, but he’s just so well spoken. Not to mention that he’s a stellar guitarist with an instantly identifiable guitar style. Great questions asked. Thanks for this one, fellas. 🙏
Not only is Chris my favourite guitarist and love him and Buck and Evans and Cardinal Black, and I'll buy his signature Revstar the second it's launched, but i love his intelligence and eloquence when discussing everything about music and the guitar world. I can listen to him talking for hours
I even got my girlfriend listening to cardinal black. Chris is just great
Chris Buck has an amazing playing style and his phrasing is unreal. So fun to watch him play.
I totally got a revstar, in part due to Chris' association with them. What a fantastic guitar it is ! It punches way above its weight given the cost. The fit and finish of mine is great.
Same. I’m in a heavy band as well. Everyone thinks its so unsuited, but hilariously it cuts through so well ive had multiple ask me about it.
That Paul Davids video that Rhett mentioned was the video that I discovered Chris Buck, and I've been a huge fan ever since.
Does Chris rehearse his answers? He sounds exactly the same as he does in his videos. Amazing.
The 2 records Cardinal Black have recorded are outstanding, if you haven’t listened to the them please give them a chance the band are brilliant.
Great episode ! Thanks for the interview of Chris Buck ! Nice to know he's coming to the States...
I bought a Revstar a few months back and sod my Les Paul straight away. The Revstar is impecable in build and a great guitar to play. Awsome tone!
Love Chris Buck. Great player and seems like a real decent person.
Meet Chris a few times, and he is a really nice guy.
Awesome! Can’t wait to see Cardinal Black in LA this June. One of my favorite of today’s players, Chris is just amazing!
As well as being an awesome guitarist and musician, Chris is also a great story teller and very funny . Great show lads 😂😎🙏🏼💜
I played Yamaha instruments in High School and have several Yamaha audio products I still use every day. After watching Chris play his Revstar I rejoiced when Yamaha released left-handed versions of the Revstar and ordered one immediately. It took a few months to arrive but it's one of my favorite guitars and it's the one I usually take out to play when joining friends for a jam. Thank you for the great interview!
I’ve been watching his UA-cam show for awhile. I love his playing and was also impressed by his intelligence and diction (so shoot me!). I’m glad he recognizes his overplaying and addressed it. Thanks for this.
Love Chris bucks playing
Chris Buck is great! Love the interviews, love the podcast!
Chris is awesome! My favorite quote from the podcast - "Let's get some chicken."
I love Chris's playing! Truly inspiring!
Chris Buck is the man
Did not expect Sea Otter to come up!! Is Tilly working at Junior Nationals in West Virginia later this Month. My son will be racing. And to keep some guitar talk in this comment. Love my Revstar.
Yeah, he's on another level for sure
How long have I wanted this? :) CB is probably my favorite "newer" player, amazing musician
Hope Cardinal Black make it to Chciago someday!
Great video and great guy. I'm been a fan of Chris for a long time now. He is an amazing player! Thanks for another cool video.
TBH, I look forward to Chris's weekly Friday Fretworks posts.
BTW, Wrexham is in North Wales, Chris is from the South Wales valleys, as are many of us :)
some of my favorite youtube people together. Great episode!
After commenting to Chris last week on his channel, begging for a solo guitar studio album, well, sincerely, all kinds of wonderful to see the three of you podcast today. I've engaged an instructor to help me understand what I do... I used those same words when asked how I get the music I do. Super good episode! Many questions answered... turns out, I'm okay. Whew. And... certainly am not as good as you guys or Chris. That is it's own kind of pressure.
Chris, Rabea, Captain Kirk Douglas, Max Newman and Josh Scott are all great players. Thanks to UA-cam.
I just picked up the Indonesian P90 Revstar and am blown away by the feel, tone and build quality. This was my first non-snobby guitar purchase but it is sitting perfectly with my Suhrs, Tom Anderson, and other high end / boutique models.
Great episode so far
Great interview, well done!
Gotta get down to the original Geno's east on Wacker drive I think for stuffed pizza. Italian Beef sandwhich pretty much anywhere or the italian beef and sausage combo.
Great episode with one of my favorite players. I bought a Revstar after seeing Chris’s and a few on-line reviews. It is one of my favorites and I think it is underpriced after seeing its build quality. I’m not going to be able to see Chris this tour but hope to see him in the future. He would be an awesome candidate for one of Rhett’s one take videos.
Cool interview, Chris is a monster player. On another note: can we hear why Zach hates Jazzmasters?!😃
Yamaha SG guitars are some of the most revered guitars out there.... they are awesome
Improvement in the quality of producing artistic content, creatively, always requires doing. Learning from doing is the key to development.
Chris is the best(not that it’s a competition) guitarist on you tube or live for me he’s the greatest (well maybe Paul weller)😂😂👍👍
That will be a fun event. Laguna Seca is a beautiful track.
This was SO DOPE!!! God bless y’all!

Check out the Artisan Tele P90 set Fender did a few years ago. Reverse Tele Bridge. P90 in the neck. Absolutely unique, fun, and tones from another world.
I just purchased an old Yamaha Pacifica 904 that was made in Japan/USA it is the best guitar I have ever played. Yamaha makes outstanding guitars.
Oh man....That Custom Tele....oh man....I want one just like it!
Make a Chris Buck gold top signature and I’ll buy it.
The necessity of physically carrying merchandise imposes levels of burden which also entice others to glean revenue from the very process of seeking return on investment. A virtual environment is necessarily required to minimize associated expenses. But, there is still the requirement of "platform" creation and the technological expenses therein. Minimization of potential attraction to participate in the "sharing" of revenue production is a real challenge. The will always lie within the need for the artists to "control" (requires ownership) the processes which supports their endeavors.
I am the No.1 contender for the Rhett Shull look-a-like contest. NO ONE CAN DEFEAT ME!!!!
Say what you will about live nation, they did at least scrap merch cuts at their club level venues, so that's a big step in the right direction, hopefully more venues will follow suit
Top Bloke 🏴 Da Iawn Chris
Man zack was yappin in this ep
Chris is one of the greatest guitarists of the 21st century, right up there with John Mayer, Je Bonamassa and Derek Trucks. He should be way bigger than he actually is. And I'm sure he'll get there.
Yamaha saxes are considered as one of the main horn producers alongside Selmer and yanagisawa, consistently good as you experience from the guitars
This makes me wonder about a three position volume knob Middle position Volume of both pickups, pull up for V on neck, push for Bridge Volume. Anyone every seen that?
i am increasingly becoming aware of the idiosyncrasies of vocal expression being naturally correlated with the saleable artistic qualities of an artist (of any type).
Probably 10 years ago, a friend gifted me a DE-7. I eventually sold it because I really really needed the cash and I have regretted it ever since what a great delay.
The new Revstar Element models have a traditional 3way blade switch. I prefer it for basic rock n roll tones. I have added coilsplitting to mine, but that's because I've also changed out the pickups. Not a fan of all the gimmicks they have implemented on the other Revstar models either.
I played a revstar a few weeks ago and now I have a bunch of gear for sale
The strangest thing is that Yamaha has made great guitars for decades, but few people know it. 😊
Isn't s interesting that the more creative is the artistry, the less that product is lent toward an explanatory process. Music theory is more an after affected attempt to delineate logical analysis than it is the basis for the creative process. For me, the processing of logical rules to support the playing in the moment of creating (or responding) is more a distraction than an aid. Any "teaching" to aid musical expression should not become limited to sets of rules to be applied before or concurrent with artistic expression. Those "rules" gleaned from episodic expression are helpful in sharing what may be learned from expression, and are then called "theory". The transfer of expressive abilities should be the goal" of all "teaching".
I bought my DE7 for $38 ($41.25 with tax!) while everyone was laughing at me and asking why bother with the cheap pedal. These are an absolute sleeper.
Where was the carnitas fried rice? My wife and daughter are going there soon. I personally will not walk into CME - I don’t want to lose 8k 😂
Probably unpopular to voice this reflection , but it's undeniable that Pop/Rock bands that feature a non-instrumentalist lead singer, that have experienced the greatest monetary/popular success all have front men with sex appeal and memorable stage presence. The most important factor of this notion is EXCLUSIVE lead singing front men - bands with instrumentalist lead vocalists do not apply to this.
"Memorable stage presence" isn't insinuating they flaunt the wildness of Jagger, Morrison, or Rose etc etc. For instance, Liam Gallagher's motionless hands behind his back head titled skyward is memorable and he also has sex appeal in a nontraditional fashion in the realm of rock stars (traditional being the shirtless skintight bulged jeans ie Robert plant). I'll spare readers the pointlessness of providing more examples. I am not trying to contribute to the (assumed) steady stream of of people stroking his ego on a daily basis, but Chris Buck has both sex appeal and stage presence, but unfortunately for Cardinal Black, he's not the lead singer.
This is NOT a troll or a personal attack on Cardinal Black's vocalist, nor a slight on his voice or musical validity. This also is NOT a criticism on Cardinal Black's music as a whole. This IS purely a psychological observation of proved over the past 70 years of western Pop/Rock music consumers and the irrefutably essential (whether conscious or subconscious) traits of the bands that they choose to invest their money time and energy into no matter how superficial that reality sounds. It's not something that delights me to claim, but that is 100% irrelevant to the demonstrable truth. There's always exceptions to the rule, but I can't recall any in this moment. Share your examples of exceptions if you want (the band must be a household name).
I completely understand how most people will find this to be rude and vexing to varying degrees. But I won't conclude this in a pre-apology in order to de-ruffle any potential feathers or untwist any potential panties. I only gave this any thought after hearing Chris expound on how difficult "making it" on the road is for Cardinal Black and how the number of seats they are currently filling far from the amount needed in order to consider their band a profitable entity.
Rhett's mic is way too boomy and loud. - especially compared to Zach's
I think hes an incredible player for what he does, but seems to play the same solo over and over again, he knows the fretboard really well, but sometimes sounds like a one trick pony, but we all do it, repeat what we do on a guitar
Could not disagree more... guess you have not listen enough of Chris or Cardinal Black then... even Slash keeps sharing solo videos of him... I've seen him life, and as much as indeed he has his signature sound and like Slash, some similar solos, nothing sounds the same twice... plus live, he improvises and extends his solos a lot... check the solo on I'm Ready... rather different...
Gawd I thought I was the only one who thought this way. I now know many people do.
Im just saying hes not in the same league of player like Matteo Mancuso, but Chris Buck is high up there for his unique style of playing

It's not his lead soloing that leavea a lot to be desired. It's his rythmic parts. He has admitted himself that he is a horrible acoustic guitar player, which says a lot about that
Yamaha is half way between their pianos and guitars reputation with their brass and woodwind instruments. 30 years ago when I started out in band class I remember them being talked about more like their guitars are now
The Yamaha FG-9 is a pretty big hit in the acoustic world, it's a very desirable guitar. Yamaha electrics almost seem like an afterthought to their veru successful acoustic lines.
