I love all videos about Prii but especially comparison videos and I just subscribed! I have a 2006 Prius which has been the most reliable car ever (until this past year, but it just needed a very big maintenance job bc I really wasn’t doing that much since she was always going strong). I am thinking to upgrade to a Prius Prime. If you have any experience with Prius Primes could you make a video on how they’re different (like more or less maintenance, different features, your pros and cons, etc) like you did with this video? Comparison videos are so fun! Thanks!
After a lot of research I bought a 2008/220k mi and LOVE IT! I also love how easy it is to do maintenance yourself. Ive replaced the headlights and the spark plugs myself with no problem.
Awesome!
Did you consider getting the 3rd gen when doing your research?
@@elifan2523 : good question, actually no I didn’t. I saw a video from your car angel titled “Problems to look out for when buying a used Prius”. It was definitely a video that informed my choice. Another video titled all Prius generations and models (2022) by car hub also reiterated that generation three was the worst one. and that Jen 2 is the most reliable.
@@erinsjourney315 Thanks, I'll check them out :)
Just bought a 2007 after my 2012 was totaled by a young girl. The 3rd gens did come equipped with back up cameras and nav and all of that, but it was optional depending on trim level. Also the 2015 fixed the water pump/head gasket issue, making it the best 3rd gen. So far I actually prefer the 3rd gen to the 2nd gen for a few reasons. 3rd gen is quieter, smoother, has physical climate buttons instead of being on the screen, has more information near the speedo letting you know how much throttle you can use and stay in EV mode, and it could also play music from my phone which the 2nd gen can't. Also I think the 3rd gen has better seats. But so far the second gen is a really great car with very few compromises. These are just little gripes that I can live with. Especially considering I bought this car for 4 grand compared to the 13 grand I paid for my 2012. So for the value there isn't any car that beats a second gen prius. Cheaper than almost anything, more reliable than almost anything, lower maintenance than almost anything, and better gas mileage than almost anything. Smart people who are financially conscious buy these cars and drive them until they break, fix them and keep driving them. It's really the perfect cheap commuter car. Buying anything else is really kind of foolish if you're just looking for a good A to B vehicle. I have my fun vehicles too, but for work and long trips the Prius is a highway hero.
Yess I agree 100%
My 07 can play music from my phone via Aux cable.
I was about to throw my 2005 Toyota Prius aways for a Ford but you saved my life and my pocket 😮
I think that I will get the 2009
The reason I chose a gen 3 over a gen 2 was because I thought it would give better gas mileage on long journeys at high speed (70 mph). Was I wrong about this?
I own a 07 and totally agree with you very low maintenance and extremely reliable. Great vid
Awesome! Yeah great cars
Thanks for your time and knowledge on your video. Just purchased my first Toyota Prius 2 days ago. Generation 2 - 2005, with 160,000. Miles - $4,500. I had taken my time looking for one, purchased from a private party - if purchased through a car dealer asking price would have been $6,000+.
FYI simply take your time upon looking for a Prius - good deals are out there. 👍
Awesome! Glad I can help
Just bought mine recently with 212000 miles on it and a one owner vehicle for $3200 put new headlight assemblies and Trans and oil changed... I like the thing it's a 2005 BTW subscribed recently.
Very true vlog about gen2 and gen3 .
Just bought a neglected gen 2. I’ve done A lot of work on it but it keeps getting better! Smooth and quiet!!!
Awesome
Just bought a 2005 gen 2 with 230k miles...loving it
Good vid. Keep it up man
Thank you!
I like the layout of the 3rd gen interior, some people hate it, I feel like I'm in a cockpit😂
my gen 3 had a water pump go bad at 110k miles....I stopped, had it towed and they fixed it....the engine wasn't damaged because the computer slowed my vehicle down, and eventually didn;t allow me to run it any longer...800.00 repair...first repair in 8 yrs.....I love my prius.
the best car evere! i have a prius gen2 2005 and it have 550000 km. 0 problem, only 1 pack battery replaced!
I've owned a Gen 2 and currently owned a Gen 3.....I love my Gen 3 I. Almost ever aspect
I have been asking myself this questions for about 2 weeks now. I currently have a gen 2 and was thinking about getting a gen 3 because of the looks. I have already put 70k on my prius and I’ve only had to replace the hybrid system water pump which was like $350. I love my car and I think you have just answered my questions. Thanks a lot bro, I really appreciate it!
Get a Gen 4 if you are looking into a newer one!
@@carhub2178 thanks bro, I will look into that 👍🏼
@@Ion-tj6cl hi there, I bought it with around 173k and I recently sold it with 263k. I did have to change the hybrid battery which was costly but other than that the car was amazing for me.
I have two 2005 Gen 2's. I've only had to change the inverter pumps and HV battery on one. The other one needed a little more because it sat too long before I bought it. So the fuel bladder had shrunk. I replaced the fuel tank and filler neck, combination meter, inverter pump, ABS module, and HV pack. It's practically like a new car now. I love working on these things!
That’s awesome! Where are you from
@@carhub2178 I live in Fort Worth Texas. Whar state are you in?
@@Ion-tj6cl It was sitting for a whole with around 240k miles. We haven't had to do anything to it since I got it up and running.
@@Ion-tj6cl Different Generations have different issues. I've mostly worked on 2nd and 3rd Gen. You said you're looking at a 2nd Gen Prius 4? What year is it? This video and my cars are 2nd Gen Prius (2005-2009). If you have a Gen 4 (2016-2022) I haven't worked on those. I've seen a few people complain about the Infotainment screen and TPMS for those years, but I'm not sure about the HV system and drivetrain.
@@Ion-tj6cl Ok, I understand now. Lol. I would say that the Gen 2 is the most reliable one. For a 2009 with low miles, it just depends on how well it was maintained. The inverter water pump might be something you'll want to keep on the shelf (Or in the trunk). These are made mostly of plastic and is usually one of the first things to go. It's very easy to replace. The engine is solid. Just keep the oil changed and topped off. The coil packs will occasionally need to be replaced. For a used Prius, I'd probably proactively replace the coil packs and plugs. If the ABS is working now, just be sure that the brake fluid is full and brakes work properly. It's very obvious when the ABS module has an issue. It'll light up the dash like a Christmas tree.
Have an '09 i got with 160,000 miles, it has 220,000 now, iv changed the fluid of course, the tiny battery in the trunk, the center screen i got used online for like $450, cant believe how easy such a futuristic care is to work on, you can get to the main battery in 15 minutes to clean the vent system, even the center screen you can have out in under 10 just with watching a video on it. I have no idea how old the main battery is, i give her the beans driving everyday in the city to work and get 39mpg, even better in the summer when the pack isn't cold starting out. I like the look of the 2nd gen mainly because it doesnt look fast and I have a theory a self respecting cop will never pull it over lol.
Yes great cars!
Awesome video and most timely for me. Shopping for a used Prius now.

Gen 2 is a smarter finicial decision. Getting a gen 3 kind defeats the purpose cuz you're eating some devaluation again. Point of driving a Prius is to save money, not the planet.
I just got a gen 2 in blue yesterday with 130,000 miles. This made me feel good
Good car!
I love my Gen 2 Prius Touring for its looks and reliability and the most efficient use of space in any car i have seen. I have taken it from Maine to Virginia in 10 hrs at 80 plus mph then camped out in the back. now at 230+K and runs perfect still. Just out $5k into new exhaust, springs, shocks, coolant valve etc. to keep it going another $200k. much better looking than the Prius today with all those weird sharp angles and ugly vertical slots in front. get good tires that dont wiggle and the handling is acceptable.
Yes great cars!!
I used to hate the older prius but now I have come to love them. They replaced the gen 1 Honda insight in my heart because those are getting harder and harder to find in good working order. I love how cheap these are now and even if the battery is blown up they only cost like $1000 to replace and you can probably get one with a dead battery for less than $2000.
Yess!
I just bought a 2006 Prius & I luv it. They are built like mini tanks. They are very strong reliable cars. 🚙 😎👍
Yes they are!!
I just bought a 07 touring edition. One owner 150,000 miles on it and it drives great. I’m getting 46 miles a gallon 😊. Using it for my daily work commute. I love it so far.
Awesome!
Gen 2 over any other generation hands down.
Thanks!
Gen 4 here. 2017. It's a beast
Recently bought a 2007 /105k miles and I couldn't be happier! I took it straight to my mechanic (Toyota specialist) after I bought it and told him to "fix everything", but it was barely anything to fix even though the previous owner had been quite... shall we say relaxed with maintenance. I will say that I’m terrified that the hybrid battery will just randomly die though, but that’s all in my head tbh. Car has been running super smooth with no issues whatsoever. The gas milage has actually been fantastic as well, I top it up when it's down to 3-4 dots and that's about every couple of months. I think it identifies as a Tesla 😅
That’s awesome!
Funny thing with hybrid battery, you can get cells for cheap like 20$ or so and replace them for cheap as well. Of course there would be no warranty and it might not last 8-10 years, but it definitely is a cheap option to get it back to nominal performance.
Enjoyed the video very insightful!
Just a quick question which specific years would you recommend for the 2nd gens?
Any year! 2004 to 2009 are pretty much all the same
I had gen 2, mechanically no issues at all but look wise gen3 was beautiful design inside outside, got gen3, 97k mileage and overheating issues, battery issues, first error came up as hybrid system failed, coolent b system failed which is probably to do with exhaust and battery etc. but old one as you say just oil and basic things break pads📖hand break etc, but old is sluggish up hills don’t know if it was coil or plugs but once camshaft sensor went but that’s not a big issue
The gen 3 comes with navi screen i have it in my 2011. Guess it was optional.
i have an 04 prius , bought it 16 years ago No major problems, ive done all the normal problems myself always using toyota parts 208000

I have a 2006 gen 2 I had the oil changed a week before I drove from ca to id and on the way back it threw a rod. I’ve also had to replace both batteries.
Probably wrong oil. A lot of miles?
I’m Buying a 2005, GEN 2 tomorrow 4500, I’m gonna ask him to take $60 off for the rental car for me to get over to where the car is. It has 2301 miles. I’m picking it up tomorrow and I have to drive it down a steep Windi he’ll Buckhorn summit here in Northern California. After the guy sells me the car, he’s taking a trip to Jamaica, I trust this guy so far. My old auto shop teacher in high school told me if you ever sell a used , car sell it to somebody from out of state??? LMFAO! Anyways, it looks like all the major stuff replaced, brakes, battery, and Smogged. I’ll check back here tomorrow after I buy the car and let you dudes know how everything went, I got faith, I read a lot of good things about the Toyota Prius generation 2!😄
How did it go?
Try to buy the updated Gen2 Prius with the odometer at the right side of the display. The 2004-2006 Prius have the odometer on the left side and that one gets stuck at 299999 km/miles. And put a catshield on it to prevent theft of the catalyst converter. Gen2 Prius is popular among cat thieves because it is an easy job on this car.
Awesome thank you
@@carhub2178 You're welcome and thanks for your video!
gen 3 has a ton of airbags knees side curtain front rear so factor that in
Got my 2006 Prius for $3K, it needs the ABS break module replaced, which is one of the common failures on this model. However it is still drivable with that fault for the most part. It is my favorite sedan vehicle I have had so far. The other common failure is the VFD display (displays the MPH and other info) and that is a PITA to fix as you have to take the whole dashboard apart (to replace 1-3 capacitors!!??!) Other than those two faults they are bullet proof!
Yes very common problems!
had a gen 2 and had problems with dash lights coming out and on and the battery pac was all corroded connections and abs pump was making a spider weird noise and cvt trans was making a strange sound and you definitley notice in gen 2 very clunky sound when motor shuts off or startsso currantly has now a gen 3 and way better silent no clunking when engine and eletric motors seamless engage while the sofware is much more sophisticted then gen 2 .
Some confusion. Gen 3 has more features. It just depends on the trim level. I have the touch screen and alot of cool stuff on the persona trim 3
Why not to replace water pump before it goes??? Whenever I buy gen 3 prius I do that as preventive matter
Great video boss! Question for you.. since you say that the head gasket will blow once the water pump goes out, would it be safe to say that if we change the water pump before that happens, that might save the head gasket or at least make it last longer?
Yes exactly! Preventative maintenance!
Hey great info. Was just wondering if i bought a refurbished battery pack for a gen 2 prius, do you think it would give me much improvement in MPG if the old one has high miles ?
Yes but minimal because the rest of the cells are still old
I have a 2009 Toyota Prius and I've had a lot of 12v batteries die on me. Granted I live in Florida and my garage gets pretty hot in the summer! I had a Hybrid Water Pump go out and I took my car to Toyota and they charged me over $700 to fix it! Never take your car to the dealership to fix a water pump! I learned later that you can do it yourself for under $200! That experience taught me to learn all I can about my car and to fix it myself! My car has over 137,000 miles and now I'm putting in a used remanufactured ABS Actuator! It is pretty expensive and I had to purchase some new tools along with high voltage class 0 gloves to open up the converter! I'll get the part tomorrow. I could not get the new remanufactured part that I wanted because right now you just can't get them! Toyota's new part is $1,134! I don't trust buying their part only because this seems to be a common issue on these cars! Mine is coming from eBay.
Yes 👏

can you install gen 3 battery pack in gen 2 ? i have the gen 2 and the battery getting very weak . plus i have 9 inch android screen installed and it's great upgrade recommended
Pack is different but you can use the cells
I own two 2nd generation Priuses (2007. and 2009.). I'm very satisfied. I think it is still the best Prius of all 5 generations. Why? I wanted to buy a third generation Prius after the second gen. However, the difference in the powertrain is not so great, and the interior design of the second gen is significantly better. I love the simple lines of my Prius, the good visibility to the front, to the sides and to the rear. In the third generation, visibility is slightly reduced, and the unusual central part visually reduces the size of the interior. Then came the fourth generation, which is simply ugly to me. The external appearance is not a problem for me, because once I sit in the car, I can't see what it looks like from the outside. But I don't like the interior at all. Instead of simple lines, on the doors and center console as it is on my Priuses, the fourth generation is too "playful", impractical and frivolous. So I gave up on the fourth generation. I thought it would be best to make a modernized version of the second gen. And now the fifth generation has arrived. And indeed, the basic exterior lines are very reminiscent of the second generation, with the fact that they are more modern and look great. The interior looks good. I think it would be better if the lines were even simpler and straighter, but it looks nice. The powertrain is superb. But... Toyota, why...? You put too much on style. Yes, the style of the new Prius is beautiful, but why did you lower the height of the car? Instead of reducing it, you should have raised it by 2-3 cm, let's say to 152 cm, i.e. to the height of the first generation Auris. It would still look very nice, good style. It would lose a little on aerodynamics, consumption and performance. But all that is negligible. It would give a lot more space. As far as I can see, the glass surfaces have decreased, and thus the visibility. Visibility is important not only for safety, but also for driving pleasure. I think a mistake was made because the car was lowered and the glass surfaces were reduced. Looks like I'll still be sticking with my second generation Priuses. Despite their age, they still run like new. Comfortable, with good visibility, reliable. Greetings from Croatia.
Does the GEN two Have a CD player?
I just bought a 2014 Prius 3 for $1k. Mine has a screen and backup camera from the factory.
What do you recommend for batteries in a Gen 2. I was thinking Lithium what are you thinking? Give me some advice

Thanks for the info. Got a 3rd Gen Prius V with 247,000 miles on it. Along with disappearing coolant (cylinder 1 misfire), the traction battery is pretty much dead as the dash lights up and the dreaded POA80 code comes up on the scanner along with an indication that cylinders 1, 2, and 3 random misfires are happing. Should I just cut my losses and dump this thing or just get a rebuilt battery and just keep driving it?
I would go for a newer one but you could also make sure the head gasket isn’t blown and put another hybrid battery in it as another option
Change spark plugs and coil packs and a fresh oil change. Make sure hybrid fan is clean.
Just picked up a gen2 with almost 200k miles and hoping for 200k more😂
It more than likely will
I was going to buy a gen 3, but then a mechanic said stay away due to the head gasket issues. Got an 08 gen 2 and have been very happy. It's also crazy to me that the gen 2 has a back up camera but the gen 3 doesn't, wtf.
Some Gen 3s have a back up camera. And if you keep the Gen 3 water pumps fresh. They are great cars
It blows a head gasket when you keep driving it when its overheating. If the waterpump breaks it will overheat. Stop immediately and get it towed to a place to get fixed. If you dont drive it when it overheats you will be fine.
The reason why the water pumps go bad on the Gen 3s is because they are electric driven opposed to the Gen 2s where they are the old school mechanical water pumps that are undeniably more reliable. There's really no signs when an electric water pump goes bad. I think that was a horrible design for a Prius as they are not performance cars.
Clearly they did this to cause more failures and deepen their pockets with maintenance costs to their consumers.
What about the gen 3 pHEV?
Here in Aus anything hybrid is expensive. Gen 2 and gen 3 same price
Have owned an 05 since 2010 and just want to warn you guys that the HV battery and brake accumulator are common and expensive repairs
Gen 3 does have the big screen its called toyota touch & go. I dont know about america but they do have those in europe.
Most packages here don’t have that!
I've had my 2004 option 9 since I bought it new. It's a tank and has taken a lot of abuse even from bad mechanics.
I see it's the most in demand used gen 2. JBL system still thumping. Should have been servicing the AC. I have a B1476 ac code most likely the dumb mistake of getting an aftermarket ac compressor but it still blows cold and have mastered driving it without ac going out even in Summer in Coastal southeast. I live out of it for a long time and I think it makes a great camper. I could buy a newer one now but more taxes and insurance and more complicated.
I may fix it up step by step. I do like the screen and the large mph digital display, the seat configuration I can make like my recliner back passenger seat pushing the front seat Forward, take off headrest then recline seat back flush with rear seat. That area can be a bed too taking out the glove box for more room and have a closer. Tons of storage in the basement and some in my makeshift attic using 2 hanger rods front and back. Even store 2 guitars on top of rods fitting securely.
Also nice not having that obstruction between the front seats which my little dog 🐕 liked dog liked God rest her soul. She loved riding in the Prius. Use my JBL system as a bass amp/speakers playing my micro bass. It'll be 20 years old soon.
Tempted in getting a Prime though as it can run AC all night without ice kicking or much less often.
We have alot of Primes for sale! People love them as they are very nice cars!

I have a gen 3 and had no problems I am over 100K miles
Not saying all have the same problem but on average Gen 2 is better and plus over 100k Is when they start to blow head gaskets
Does a 2008 and 2010 use the same hybrid battery 🔋
Different pack same cells
@@carhub2178 thank you 🙏 keep up the good work.
@@carhub2178 I should have have ask can I use those cells for an 2008
why do you own 200 prius cars like you stated ? THX
We buy them wrecked and rebuild them
You don’t and shouldn’t wait until the water pump goes out. Just get it replaced BEFORE it goes bad and you’ll have that piece of mind
Yes I have a video on that
Awesome, I’m looking to get into a gen 2 or gen 3 myself!
I didnt know dealers/repairers disclosed any info without a hidden agenda, maybe your different? they are good cars with very high resale, maybe we should all lock are prius/cars up better PEACE MR
I Trust you, come from hong kong haha
🤙🏽
I’m looking for a Prius to buy now
Got one for sale! Gen 2. Call me anytime 4172999104 for details
my 05 w 92k was 5500 and had a bad 12v battery ($200) and a stolen catalytic converter ($400-1900 amazon vs Toyota) Used car prices are not awesome right now
@@ruuster83 how do u like it i just bought a sienna for the space but still need a prius for the low fuel cost
@Do Dirt I freaking love it. The interior is very pristine and the hybrid battery only has 12k miles on it. Was replaced at 80k. I'm getting 55mpg
@@ruuster83 oh wow i would be every freaking where with 55 mpg i wonder if the insurance cost would be high on hybrids the new sienna hybrids i couldnt afford those im pretty much practical ill get a prius to match my white sienna xle 2012 at 150k miles i have a tacoma 2013 with 110k but gave it to my mom the van does everything to me compared to a truck beside off road and i can imagine driving a prius 55mpg omg 20 bucks would be like 2 weeks of driving
Prius V
Gen 2 has abs problem and hybrid pack gets too old
Yes Every car has problems? It’s a comparison. Problems out weigh others

You are very attractive! I don't like the middle console in the Generation 3 Prius'.
but option gen3 is batter than gen2 bro
I’m some ways yes 👍 but the gen 2 definitely has its pros over the gen 3 as well
whos we ? we owned 200 ? are you in business? if so wheres the address? THX u seem ok , but questions are good lol
23 old wire road. Missouri. We are basically the only people around us that knows how to work on them. And yes we sell them too
Head gasket
For anyone whos wanting to buy a gen 2. Please be weary and ask questions about the hybrid battery. Dont worry too much about engine and transmission, just make sure the oil was changed and regular maintenance. But please ask questions like if the battery was every replaced with a new one or reconditioned one. Most likely if you buy high mileage gen 2 your gonna need to spend 1.5k on battery because they will die out. Reconditioned batteries are pointless so dont do that. New ones are the only way. Dont get tricked into these reconditioned batteries with crappy warranties. Thats how those reconditions make their money off of warranties. They know the batteries will die so thats why they offer your warranty, and if you dont opt for warranty then your screwed with a shitty battery. Dr prius battery life is good to test it when purchasing. Take obd2 reader with you and scan everything. Also look for water leaks in 12v battery area and spare tire area. Thats my rant. Saying all this cause i bought a gen 2, drove for a couple months and hybrid battery screwed my ass. So i sold it luckily i had warranty from previous owner. If your worried about battery and dont drive often then dont even get prius. Only get prius if you drive alot. Go for 5th gen camry or any other reliable honda or toyota. Cheers
Lo
Gen 2 are Uglyyyyyy I have gen 3 over 150k batteries still good I'm getting 48 mpg i pick gen 3 with is problem before gen 2
