At 21:40 - just a note that it's necessary to bolt the battery to the car before attaching the electrical connections. One bolt is longer and black, and goes in the upper left corner. I think this is the ground bolt. If you connect everything and start the car, you'll get strange errors without the battery bolted in. Don't ask me how I know. :)
if a battery is not grounded correctly it may not complete the circuit. or read as having to little voltage. hell even with just a normal gas engine car these days if the battery is week or connectors are corroded it may still start but you will get all kinds of errors...
I rewatched at 21:40. Exactly what did Chris fail to do? All of those body bolts screwed into the body itself. Threads make metal of metal contact. Plus the two contacts to the left as one was the ground right?
This might sound crazy (never thought I would say this) but after working on this and driving it around a few hundred miles, it’s a blast to drive... it’s horribly slow but it’s fun because it’s a challenge! They show you when you’re using gas vs electric and when your regenerating electric so it becomes a challenge to get the best MPG. Every car has its place and I can see how this one fits!

Chris !!!!! You do this like a boss !!! I worked at toyota in sweden, and i can tell you that you did everything right. You are good at what you do so keep doing good videos. Greetings from Sweden
By far, the best thing to do to keep track of where bolts go is once you remove a piece you partially screw bolts back into their holes by hand. It will save so much frustration of remembering where they go and the possibility of forgetting. The only downside is the little bit of extra time of taking them out again when u want to replace things but it's worth it
I'm an electrician. Trained by the US Navy and over 30 years in that field so, legit. A word on electrical safety. Once you had the battery together and started the car there was upwards of 200 volts on the two high voltage connections on the battery. In your next step, you held solid metal tools and the cable strain relief clamp plate right over the high voltage connections. If you had dropped them or touch those connections you would have been shocked or sparks would fly. It could ruin your new battery as well or start a fire. Please be careful during this step. You need to put a piece of plastic or something nonconductive over the high voltage connections while the covers are not in place. Safety first. More people get electrocuted off of 120 volts than any other voltage and I guarantee those high voltage connections have a higher voltage than that. Food for thought. I love your videos Chris and I am a subscriber so keep up the good work. I support your channel and all the charity work you do Chris.
Thanks for the feedback. Those wires are coming off of solenoids and they are not active when the car is off and or the battery safety plug is removed which is why I remove the safety plug right away before touching the battery. Not only does it half the voltage but it opens up the circuit on the battery since it is in series. There are no wires or bare metal that can be contacted that is "live" or "hot" as it is all covered or sealed. That is part of the safety design done by Toyota. Now that doesnt mean you cannot be more cautious and I appreciate your advice!
I like watching all your videos because they are so well done. I don't own a Prius but my neighbor does an I will tell him about your work. Not to be rude but its his job to presents 😂😁😁😂 plus this kind of work needs preparations something not every shop tech gets when they have to explain to their customer rigjt after having less than 1hour to find solutions or something... dealers are over price but there are good techs as well
This might be the best tutorials Ive ever seen period. I had to break into my battery twice, once on an attempted refurb and once for a complete battery change when the refurb failed. Both times I couldn't have got the job done without this video. Thank you very much.
Chris i think u should have connected the air ducts so the battery could have been cooled even if u were just checking if the car would start you know other folks could keep the car running longer and they could damage the new battery so i think it would be a good idea to tell them to connect the air ducts before trying to start the vehicule Greetings from mexico !
Just wanted to share my experience. I took my car to my mechanic and he told me it was about a 97% chance that I had a dying hybrid battery. He said he doesn't deal with hybrid systems which is respectable. He told me my best bet was to go the dealer because at least I will know it gets done right. That's decent advice if you have cash to spend but me being a broke caveman decided I would rip my sisters 07 prius battery out and shove it into my 06. (lucky for me she just bought a new car 4 days prior to this so she sold me the battery for super super cheap) Using only this video and 200 dollars worth of harbor freight tools I was able to successfully perform the delicate operation in a mere 9 hours. So far, so good! I can't express how insanely great this video is! In my case I didn't have to open the battery core which made the job a lot easier, but after dismantling the first prius and reassembling it, the experience and guiding from this video made me knowledgeable to dismantle the second one after with only a few references for remembering which way that fan goes... was it up? down? left? Again, I'm a caveman so I retreated to my den and waited for my stone tablet to load up this video so I could reference it. I also have to mention that you should never buy a 30 piece ratchet set for $5 at harbor freight. after finally testing the swapped battery in my 06 and confirming it worked, I oogaboogad in glee. I quickly began screwing the battery covers back on and that's when disaster struck. My 20 cent ratchet adapter snapped in half, leaving me with a 3/8 drill and only a 1/4 socket. Anyways that sucked. Also pro tip, don't drop the negative battery lead screw from the 12v into the battery crevice. It sucks because you can't retrieve it without a magnet, taking out the battery or shoving your scrawny arms in the 1 inch fissure and hoping you can find it in all the water that's probably in there. Anyways, great tutorial, perfect 5/7, if anyone read this far then you are a legend. peace.
By far one of the best DIY videos on youtube. I dont even have a prius or plan on getting one. I started watching to see what the most hated car was. Then could not stop watching till the end. Great Job Chris!
can we just take the time to appreciate how much time and effort it took Chris to make this video? I mean the guy records each bolt he takes out for gods sake.
Chris, thank you for all the effort you've put into making these videos. You've inspired me to get my own tools and I'm almost entirely confident that I could change my oil, coolant, trans fluid, brake rotors and pads, redo my entire suspension and exhaust, and now a hybrid battery. Incredible. I've never even changed my own oil before but now you make me feel like I really know what I'm doing. I know this is an older video, but thanks man. You deserve so much
Once you've done any of these jobs once or twice it gets much easier, especially with oil changes and brakes. The hardest part of any job is when a bolt is seized, rusted or corroded. Then heat, torque and penetrating fluid is your best friend :) best of luck!

Simply explained, and no extra information that is useless, explaining what the bolts are and for, full of correct information and taken directly from the service manual, and most importantly! He speaks clearly and matter of factly. Well done.
An extra step I'd take is to protect all those terminals from corroding again. The vinegar on those nuts will encourage quick corrosion. I'd rinse them or better yet put them in a water and baking soda solution. Then dry them and rub dielectric grease on them or spray them with a battery terminal protector. This way you are avoiding a potential fault, Every time I disconnect everything electrical, I spray a little terminal protector in the connections.
The editing and video quality is amazing. You can tell alot of work went into this tutorial. The process and tools used was very professional. A++++ Tip- when cleaning metal with vinegar always neturalize the vinegar with a baking soda and water solution. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly

@@eaglerider1826 because your car battery is only used to start the car and run some systems but hybrid batteries are used to move the entire car. also hybrid batteries are lithium-ion type and car batteries are lead-acid type so there's a difference right there. when this prius was manufactured the cost for lithium-ion battery packs were 10-20x more expensive than they are now.

If you use vinegar to clean the buss bar nuts you need to neutralize the acid before reinstalling them. Use baking soda and water. Then dry they before installing.
@Butch Ford - No replies= 100% LOL - Also should have used " Dielectric Grease " on all of those Terminals. Obviously moisture was attacking those Terminals through time.
What got me was the original bus bars were copper, but the replacements looked to be something else. While less aesthetically pleasing, it might have been better to clean and re-use the old ones, if they weren't eaten away.
@@8180634 - You are right about " Copper Bus Bars ", I see that too. But as you can see, corrosion was attacking it. As far as I know, once corrosion attack Copper..., it leaves little holes and degrade the Copper. Once Copper is degraded, Electrical Field travel limited and Charging / Discharging would weaken the Batteries. I think he did the right move by replacing the Bus Bars. Although I still stick to my original post with " Dielectric Grease ", so either route would be aok through time.
@@8180634 The new bars are likely coated copper. A lot of copper electric connectors are "tinned" with a corrosion resistant metal. I also would add dielectric grease, as suggested above.

Baggies are good for organization, i also recommend replacing the bolt back where it goes once the part is removed. I replaced my engine last year and bolt and part organization is the most important thing you can do to save your self time. I also recommend creating a log of what you are doing. That way when you put it back together you can just read your log and reverse. This will ensure you will not skip a step then have to double back and correct something you skipped.

By far, the best thing to do to keep track of where bolts go is once you remove a piece you partially screw bolts back into their holes by hand. It will save so much frustration of remembering where they go and the possibility of forgetting. The only downside is the little bit of extra time of taking them out again when u want to replace things but it's worth it
i was putting a Procharger on my Tacoma and I did that because there were so many different bolts it saves so much pain
I see that the US Navy did a great job.. Lol... 🇬🇧

(lucky for me she just bought a new car 4 days prior to this so she sold me the battery for super super cheap)
Using only this video and 200 dollars worth of harbor freight tools I was able to successfully perform the delicate operation in a mere 9 hours.
Anyways, great tutorial, perfect 5/7, if anyone read this far then you are a legend. peace.

WOW! The effort that you put into this video shows. Very professional and helpful throughout. Thank you for taking the time out to share with the community.
Thanks Shan! That is the goal with all of my videos!
Yes, very remarkable. And that just for a mere 4.4 million subscribers....
Fabulous! I was lucky when my 2005 Prius' battery failed. Warranty is 10 years or 150,000 miles. I had 144,000 miles and it would have been 10 years old in a month. Whew!
Thanks for posting this.

@@chrisfix ChrisFix The Movie. I'd pay to go see that!
Well, the video was so well made I decided to look into doing it myself. After not seeing any bargains on Prius batteries and really wondering if I should, I saw someone comment on green bean and green tech. Absolutely professional from beginning to end. And I spent about $1700 with a lifetime guarantee as opposed to $2500 if I do it with no guarantees. I will keep you posted.
The triangle of death was on but no codes came up but the cabin air filter was filthy so cleaning that is extremely important.

Excellent video! Detailed, step by step presentation. I own a 2014 Prius and plan to keep it for many years. This video is priceless. Keep up the great work, Chris!
This guy is awesome when it comes to showing people how to DIY the right way! I hate people who show you how to take it apart and then say putting it back together is just the reverse of taking it apart that's the end of the video bye, those people suck and are lazy. This guy is on point does the entire thing all the way through tells you all the torque specs and stuff and even goes out of his way to replace other things that are wrong with it which shows that he has integrity and honesty. Best car mechanic DIY video I have seen so far from anyone!
Toyota Dealer does not like this video 🤣
And this is why i subscribed to your channel
You explain every single detail so well
You show step by step and also show the right tools 🧰 to do the job 😎👍🏼

His presentations are very good.
Best part is he links every tool you need to get the job done.
HAHA the best best best part is when he links all those nice tools and then you go, click on it and buy them just because haha

Listen, I’m no UA-camr and I have no experience with making videos, but I do have common sense in knowing that videos take a lot of time and energy to produce. I don’t even own a Prius and I am BAFFLED by the amount of dedication and energy you took to produce this video. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for producing amazing content like this. You may get tired and exhausted and even stop in the middle of recording just thinking to yourself, “why am I doing this”, “I just want to give up” but I and thousands of others APPRECIATE your hard work for making such an in-depth, beautiful video! It was beyond amazing watching you do this! I speak on me and all of your others fans by saying thank you so much, you have a subscriber for LIFE!
