i bought a 2015 Prius Persona Series model.Toyota North America told me that the hybrid battery is covered under warranty for 150K miles. There is a ton of hybrid shops around and the batteries are alot cheaper now. When the prius came out the battery was like around $7000.Now you can buy a refurbished for $3000+.The Atkinson engine and CVT transmission is pretty reliable.
@@fugazi5150 what I want to know is what is the voltage and amperage of the battery. That would give me an Idea of how to build a replacement from other batteries cheap.
Excellent presentation with humor to make it interesting. My Prius is at 301,000 miles, battery changed at 250k. Still getting 50+ in city and 45+ on mixed highway+ city driving.
I found a place in Houston that will install a reconditioned one guaranteed for 25K miles for $1500 or a new one guaranteed for 75K miles for $2500. Believe me, those batteries will go much further than that.
I used to hate Prius and think they were ugly as hell, but we went on vacation to California and our friend let us borrow his for a week. At the end I ended up really liking the car,, it was very spacious and comfortable for the size of it, I was very surprised. Super quiet too
I hated them as well. Last week my wife found a good (really good) deal on one. Not going to sell my Durango with the 5.7 Hemi, but I use about the same gas pulling the dodge out of the driveway as I do going across down, mashing the accelerator and seeing how much fuel I can burn in the prius. Despite my attempts to kill as many big white bears as possible... Still on the same take of gas, the one I filled up for $4 when we were driving the car home. (it had half a tank when we took it home.) I'm really trying to hate it. But its comfortable, is the fastest go cart I've ever driven. And really if you think of it like a really fun, high tech Go Cart, that's road legal, then it is kinda fun to drive. At 6'3" there's plenty of leg room, and again, the seats are really comfortable.
Love my 2002 Prius!!! We replaced that battery I. September 2017 when it had 350k miles on it. I am currently at 359k total mileage. Still getting 36mpg.
I had a 2007 Prius, gave it to my son, who still drives it. 220,000 miles and still gets 43 mph. The best car I ever bought. Never a SINGLE problem. Best car ever made.
Found a blue 2007 Prius that is loaded, everything checked for options. Owner says it won't run right, sells it to me for $500. $200 later with 10 hours of labor and it runs like new. A couple cells went bad is all. Car has 417K miles. Added an additional 19, 400 miles in 3 months of Lyft driving and it hasn't complained at all. Car was garage kept by an older couple, so it still looks brand new. A great find for such a reliable appliance. Don't replace every cell, just the ones that have a much lower voltage than the rest in the pack. If they all measure at 7.4v but a couple measure 6.5v or such, replace those cells.
@@jailbird1133 Nah it's a car allright. It may be because I opted for the Prius C, but these suckers make up for their sometimes anemic acceleration with superb handing. You can just throw it around bends like no one's business and it will be more than happy to oblige. Heck, it can even be drifted if you know about maintenance mode(I hear it's not a good idea to leave it on for extended periods though)
I just sold my 2007 with 270k miles on it, the hybrid battery somehow still fully charges no problem and has never been touched before! It was an absolutely AMAZING car, never broke down and the only thing that was replaced aside from maintenance was the catalytic converter, and it wasn’t even out. Once you get a prius, it’s so hard to give up that gas mileage and reliability, so I bought a 2017!
Sure as hell was the first thing i was thinking of 😂 but for real, Hoovie should make this car shine and sell it with profit with a big P. Then spend the money on some more expensive garbage of a car, like a million mile lexus or something
rkan2 that’s a really good point. He talked about wanting his hobby to be self contained and then talked about selling cars for money and now he did a quick, cheap, easy fix and will probably make a quick profit. Nice!
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!! I do live in OC, in fact I live 3 miles away from Electron Automotive! I stopped by today and they totally hooked me up! My hybrid battery was dead, and my 12v battery was on her way out! They changed both batteries for $1458!! I was so sad because I thought my car was totaled! Chris from Electron Automotive diagnosed my car for free and also checked my entire car to tell me if it was worth installing two new batteries! Thank you so again. I’m so happy I came across your vid!!!
I have owned and loved Priuses since the 2005 model and for the life of me, don’t understand why so many guys hate them. They are lightweight, so the combined 135 hp really makes them peppy, and the electric motor delivers all of its torque right off cracking of the throttle. It puzzled me so, I started asking all of my friends the question. The most definitive answer was from a young lady who quipped, “The reason that so many guys hate Priuses is because they fear that their peepees aren’t big enough!” Suddenly, it all made sense!
I traded in my 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 for a 2021 Toyota Pius Hybrid on February 5, 2021, and I absolutely love it! I had been looking to get a Prius for over a year, and I am so glad that I got the opportunity to do it this year. I have subscribed and liked this video. I thought I was the only one who loved the Prius.
This was my first Hoovie video I ever watched. I bought a 2007 Prius based on this review. And it's been an awesome car and I'm so glad I took the risk. It's saved me thousands over the years and other than a water pump it's only had regular maintenance. There's a fair few minor issues with it. Most of which came with the car when I bought it.
I had to achingly buy a hybrid. I drive up to 4K miles a month on a college student budget, my Subaru gas bill was borderline $450 and it was time for something else. I purchased a 2008 Prius Touring, I still think my car is ugly - love the look of the third gen way way more but with my car, the savings, space, and technology made this car way, way more attractive to me. I’ve already driven more than 40k miles this year and have only had oil changes. My gas tank holds 11 gallons, goes on empty at 9 1/2 and I can easily achieve 400-500 miles on a tank. It costs less than $25 to fill here in Oregon and I spend maybe $150-$200 in gas. My insurance is the same as my old Subie, my car payment is $40 higher. Overall with the gas (and my free lifetime oil changes) I’m saving some good money. Plus there’s literally no reason to not travel and adventure anymore! Yes this things is slow, but probably not as slow as you may think. The traction control is a bitch at times, and people HATE when I pass them. My driving habits haven’t changed much since I got it, though I’m more cautious about my fuel consumption. I’m still a fast driver though and when I’m driving slow for fuel savings I’m also aware and I try to be courteous to other drivers who are creeping up behind me. I’m probably a rare Prius driver being someone who tries NOT to be a Prius driver and other Prius drivers still piss me off. But I love my Prius and I’m now a huge Toyota fan!
yo same. Im a grubhub driver and im currently using a ram 1500 that gets 11 mpg. Ive been spending 500 a month on gas alone shits ridiculous. imma get a cheap ass prius and spend maybe a 1/4 of that
I've heard of the recalcitrant second generation traction control but never experienced it. They had that fixed by the time my wife's 2010 (third generation) was made. The reliability is nothing short of incredible for any second or later generation Prius. My 2002 - a *much* less reliable first generation - needed its first repair a couple months ago... the inverter cooling pump failed. $150 and a morning's work got it back on the road. Even the brakes are original at 193K miles.
Finally meet one same breed as me:fast Prius driver.once Honda hrv tailgate me,ended up can't catch up to me when going up steep hill (195kmh recorded😂😂)gen 3 Zvw30
My GF has a 2010 Prius and I love it. Obiviously its not fast or a handling car but man its a good city car. Half of the time we are stuck at lights here in NYC and dont need an engine running wasting gas. It has a ton of cargo room, we haul so much crap from Home Depot in it even a door for our bedroom fit in it! When you take it out of the city and into the country side you can really tell its out of its element tho.
Apparently man, it's only US spec Priuses that handle like shit, they're exactly the same from Japan besides steering wheel position. EU spec Priuses were always the ''touring spec'', which had rear sway-bars that were thicker than the average pencil and had 16'' or 17'' rims. The Japanese/US spec cars are much more tuned for comfort and have stupid looking 15'' rims with giant sidewall tyres on them. I knew my car was 'slow', but I never understood the bad handling aspect. I managed to drive a Japanese import with 15'' rims and fuck it was bad. It didn't feel like the same car as the Euro specs. Much more floaty for comfort, but just really shit. Fortunate for you guys, rims, tyres and anti-roll bars are cheap in the US.
I have 15" rims. They are better for fuel efficiency and crappy roads. Having sports rims are great, but on our roads you'll get sick of it if driving daily or long distances.
I always enjoyed the look on the faces of other drivers, (seen through my rear view mirror), as I smoked them taking off from a stop light. The low-end torque of a Prius is definitely surprising. Zero to 35 pretty quick. Past 35...not so much....
I agree. But I look at it this way. Even though it is not super fast, nothing equals the gas mileage AND will go the same speed it does. I can easily get over 50 mpg all day with one.
Daniel Williams thank you. The Z06 is fantastic and is basically a booster rocket attached to your foot. Both are great vehicles but for different reasons.
We're on our second Prius. Sold the first one, 2008 Gen II, and bought a 2018 Gen IV. More leg room, Radar cruise, Lane holding, Cool assist graphic with the back up camera that makes parking a breeze even though it's also got assisted parallel and back in parking. Gave up the storage that the Gen II had. But when I cleaned out the Gen II to sell it I noted that all the crap I'd been carrying around for years and hadn't used didn't need to be put in the new car anyway.
Keep it! I love it! Even though I drive a Camaro I've always had a nostalgic feeling for free Priuses. See what you can do with its original engine and battery to make it faster!
lazyhumorstudios yeah mine's a V6 too. I got it for a pretty good deal and I'm happy with the close to 350 horsepower mine makes. They can reach over 150 miles an hour and can still keep up or outpace most Mustangs. And if you turbocharge them are supercharger then they'll destroy a stock are mightily upgraded V8.
yee thats what I want to do with mine is rebuild the engine and supercharge it. its automatic but I want to swap the transmission for a 5 speed. I dont think Ill ever sell my v6 since it was my first car
I think its kind of strange that people don't understand why other people buy hybrid cars. In my case, it has nothing to do with being a hipster or going green,. Where I live, gas costa about $3.5 a gallon while average salary is less than $500 a month. So it is only natural that you would want a car that consumes a reasonable ammount of gasoline. Customs clearance and import taxes for hybrids here are 50% of the gasoline cars, as a result, you get a city where every 3rd car is a Prius. Just come visit Tbilisi, you will be blown away by the number of hybrid cars in the streets.
I just got a Prius c, another two weeks before I can get my hands on it! I was eyeing the 2015 normal Priuses but couldn't do the price difference! Also a Prius c (aqua) is easier to park in my crappy driveway. I live in Japan so the parts should be cheaper!
When people are under financial pressure they tend to make more logical decisions. If you need basic transportation and don't want to waste gas it is hard to beat a Prius. The more expensive the gas, the more a hybrid makes sense versus a regular compact or mid-size car.
@@billalexander8011 maybe its because I have old 2002 prius, but the money I've saved on gas has been spent on fixing the Main battery. My next car will be a fuel efficient non-hybrid sedan, and I have no doubt it'll probably cost just as much as my hybrid to upkeep (less battery costs, more on gas). Tired of fixing main battery issues that cost me to much time and money.
@4:39 ,definitely a candidate for a slip disc or burst disk ...always bend knees & keep load very close to body and do not jerk the the load ...this is where much of the injury occurs.
I love my 4th Prius. I started with a 2005, traded up to a 2011, traded up to a 2014 and gave that to my daughter and now drive a 2018 Prius 3 as of last Sunday. It's wonderful!
I have a 2016 Prius 4 with convenient package. We bought it with 4,500 miles on it, the purchase price is $5,000 less than the brand new one. I use it for commute, our family love it too. The best car we ever had.
Love gen 2, like gen 3, gen 4 is better than gen 1. Sorry but in my eyes the prius went downhill fast after the 3. I was thinking of getting a gen 3 last year but decided on the gen 2, just because the interior is more normal or something that belongs in a late 90s honda (isn't comparably ugly to a similar year audi a3 interior). Gen 4 feels more like a corolla hatch than something between a camry and a corolla.
450+ miles with my Prius 2005. Best thing I ever bought and still work gorgeous!! I never change this brand(Toyota/Lexus), I don't care about speed or handling, reliable car for me is the most important. Toyota is TOYOTA :)
eyescreamcake 2 months ago "450,000 miles?! On a 13 year old car?" reply: An average of 12,000 miles per year is considered the norm. Of course, some cars are driven less than that, but many are driven much more due to long commuting distance.
Once you've own a Prius you pretty much don't worry about cars anymore. What you do a lot of is wondering why you used to drive the old way. There is a thing called a no brainer and Hybrids are the default example of this idea. The Prius is the Gold Standard. Great video loved it.
Thanks for this video he opened my eyes about the Prius and now that you kind of said that we can get the battery from someone else it makes the car more affordable I do appreciate it
Three and a half thousand comments and no one has mentioned that the individual pieces in the battery aren't cells, they are called modules. The modules internally are 6 cells in series. 2 modules in series are a block.
Just to clarify: 6 1.2v cells in a 7.2v module 2 modules in a block The service plug/HV fuse splits the pack into halves, 19 modules each for NHW11, 19 and 9 modules each for NHW20. Yes the service plug splits a block (which to me doesn't make much sense). NHW11 19 blocks, 38 modules, 228 cells, 273.6v nominal. NHW20 14 blocks, 28 modules, 168 cells, 201.6v nominal. You will often see the battery voltage for the NHW20 incorrectly listed as 500v because there is a bidirectional DC-DC converter in the inverter that can boost the battery voltage up to as much as 500v to feed the inverter's internal DC bus for high speed travel, IE from freeway speeds up to the electronically limited/governed top speed of about 105-107 MPH.
I own the identical car (2008) with over 260,000 KMS on it, only one set of brakes, new battery just the other day, sips gas, DON'T trade it, makes great car to camp in, first off with hybrid system makes a great generator for heating and cooling, just set the temperature you want, total comfort all night, then move front passenger seat all the way forward, I put in domestic toilet, tons of room, comfortable mattress and you are all set... Really Kool car..👍🏻🇨🇦
Computers get in the way of that. One guy did it to a first gen 2000-2003 model but had to go through hell with custom pipes and etc. For newer generations, what happens is that if the tuned engine is producing too much excess torque (which can be read by unusually high amps from the generator), the computers would limit or shut off throttle, change air/fuel mix ratios, etc. Applying NOX into the intake or changing the cam shafts to the Otto cycle ones found in the Yaris would have the same effect. Toyota made the Prius bullet proof from tuning and emissions tampering. lol Quite the opposite of VW. So far the only way to make it fast is by not using the brakes. ... By improving handling and weight distribution.
i'm a car guy, i bought a prius for my wife. it's super practical, it hauls the family around on long road trips without using very much gas. i dont get the hate. they're ugly, they drive like shit, but at least they're not a minivan or an suv.
In this Economy "Smart" is not profitable so it is attacked as nerdy, slow, old maid, and stupid. The tags belong actually to the idiots driving Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes and 80k Pick-up Trucks with small manhood issues. If you want to waste your money, spend needless time at gas stations and mechanic shops by all means DO NOT buy something like a Prius which simply works. If you have psychological issues and feel the only fix is driving an F150 and tailgating a Prius, sorry for your suffering. Sorry your brain doesn't work, sucks to be you.
Currently shopping for a used Prius and I laughed so damn hard at “impressive show of brute strength” - thank you for making my day lighter. My mood is way better than before!
I knew I made a good choice. So many naysayers are afraid of those batteries going bad, but with proper precautions changing out that battery or they individual cells is no more involved than a normal car repair. Kudos on the video!
I would be very careful when any company says they will change out a battery with a 5 year warranty. The reason why is it is "NOT A BATTERY", it is 2 stacks of "28 battery "CELLS" or a total of 56 cells. These cells die out at different intervals kind of similar to light bulbs in a lamp. When a company replaces these, they only replace the bad cell or cells that are not working, they don't replace all of them. So the rest of the cells obviously since they are the same age, and have had the same amount of usage as the other cells that stopped working may not have a huge amount of time left. The guarantee you would be getting for $1500. and 5 years would just be on the one or few cells they replaced, not the rest of the cells, and remember there are 56 cells. This is the part that gets expensive is to keep replacing battery cells.
@@1jackvalley580 I would watch them replacing the batteries. I would make sure they replace all the batteries.then you don't know if they are new cells. Buyer beware!
My 2004 Prius was at over 286k!...until some prick cut me off on the highway in the pouring rain, put me in the guardrail...totalled her! :( first and only accident ever. But I have no doubt she would have made it to hit 300k. Ran like a champ.
Thanks! I'm falling in love with my recently purchased PriusV 2015. It's got the low mpg of a Prius, with crazy wonderful cargo space for lots of luggage, dog crate, at one time- a construction compressor. And now I know that when the battery finally starts failing many many miles from now, I can keep it going, which is important since they discontinued the V model, which I love.
I'm your typical car enthusiast - and I've been holding on to my dad's just purchased '08 Prius for two weeks. I genuinely love the thing. Did a 380 mile drive in just over a half tank. Really nice around town, too. If you look at it like an appliance rather than a car, it's absolutely amazing.
@@robikochinchaladze3364 oh man, this is an old comment lol but yeah! Kennewick WA, to Eugene, OR. It was also just a bit over a half tank used, as well. We were shocked lol
Whenever there is a major fail, like a computer screen (8,000 dealer price), battery or combo meter, find a place that is dedicated to Priuses. I take mine to Autobeyours in Scottsburg Indiana even though it's a 4 hour drive. Consummate professionals that eat, sleep and dream Priuses and keep Priuses alive in perpetuity.
Gabrielle Angel Lilly what was your experience like with that one ? Obviously good right since you have a 2010 now ? Did u ever have to replace your battery?
Everyone I know who has Prius loves it. Also the rear seat room is phenomenal and the car is very comfortable on long drives. And visability except to the back is great
Even after removing the plug, there are still powered up capacitors. You must wait at least 10 minutes before touching it, giving you time to take out the seats and panels. After that if you touch the contact wires to the cells without rubber gloves, you will die. Only after removing the wires can individual cells be handled.
Some more information about how successful the battery swap was regarding MPG, performance, and how much new life it was likely to give would've been good!
I remember seeing your video years ago. MY 2007 Prius has 266,000 miles and I just replaced the hybrid battery. A company called Greentec. They have location 4 hours away in Dallas and the guy drove up to my house in SW Oklahoma and swapped out my battery with a reconditioned one with a 2 year warranty. Cost me $1399. And $440 for them to come to my house. Was well worth it. I was getting 40 mpg on average with my old battery but it was slowly dying and causing weird things to happen with my car. Plus I had the red triangle showing up everyday. I had to clear the codes with my bluetooth code reader for the car to drive. With the reconditioned battery I got 48 mpg using cruise control at about 68 mph driving to the Lawton OK to go to Home Depot. Local Toyota dealer wanted $3000 for a brand new battery. I didn't need brand new. I just wanted good enough. And I'm happy. Love how reliable and spacious the Prius is. Thanks for the video!
That may be true if you are willing to pay for various repairs. My GF has one w 180K on it. It's not a bad car, but less reliable than my Matrix. Recently it's had a coolant pump leak, the driver's window won't close completely, the a/c fan only works when it feels like it, and some weird thing w the dash display not always turning on and when this happens, the car doesn't shut off when you hit the power button. The engine still runs well, but the Prius has lots of stuff that has gotten flakey before it reached 200K.
Chevy volt sucks, Get a Hyundai ioniq get the most MPG and have a life time warranty on the battery. Hyundai best warranty better than a lot of car out there.
I replaced the hybrid battery at 190 k miles and it has now has a lifetime warranty ( it cost $1800) but other than that, this car has been hassle free and with under $ 30 to fill up the tank I'm constantly saving a ton of money....I plan to run this Prius ( which is loaded with all kinds of great stuff like a solar roof ) to the ground....I'm going to 500 k miles plus. This is the best car I've had.....I had a Mercedes before and it drove nice but there was always something wrong with it.
I own a 2006 Prius, and its transmission failed, so it CAN happen :). At $7k, I SHOULD have totalled it out then. Great to know about the alternatives to replacing hybrid battery @ dealer as I ate that one about a year back too.
We rented one a few years ago and drove from Vegas to Boise for Thanksgiving. The car has such good electronics that it with the colder climate, the air pressure dropped and the tire pressure light came on. Not knowing what it meant, we had to stop and check that out and finally went to a Toyota dealer to check that out. Gas mileage was great and we even drove thru some areas on the highway covered in snow behind a long line of cars. Finally bought a used one a few months ago and we really love the car. Middle of summer and the battery does discharge and recharge drastically, which it didn't do when the temps were below 100 degrees. So, may have to check out the life of the battery. Fyi, got the car with 84K and now we are a little over 87k on it.
“A” pillar window helps in city driving when turning corners that have 10” + high curbs. Also, check battery cooling fan connections which tend to corrode, causing the Hybrid battery pack to throw codes. When I replaced my 12v battery(got 10yrs out of that one), you can/will see rust in the battery area.
Fixed my 02' battery with $150. I found it was just a wire harness with sensors on it that runs along one side of the pack. A few of the sensors were corroded and not sending the correct voltage to the computer. I assume it's a common problem with the 1st gen Prius. Bought new harness at dealer for $150.
Brian Lamberts that's what corroded the sensors. I can honestly say that out of all the used cars I've owned this little Prius has given me the most bang for my buck.
Prius owners don't deserve the hate. Most people just want a super reliable machine that doesn't cost much to run, roomy, decent comfort for a low price.
"Despite having a dead battery the car drives 10 miles below the speed limit in the left lane as well as it did when the car was new" The bumper sticker ever Prius should have. LOL
How long have you been driving it this way? I was just wondering because I'm in the same boat and don't have the money to fix it right now. Didn't know if it was just suppose to be a temporary thing due to future problems
April 2021: My battery failed in March 2020 - and although it's stored out of state, when I visit that location it gets me around town - pushing about 29 MPGs (until I dive in and fix the battery - soon I hope).
The Prius is not an Electric car. It only drives in EV only mode for brief periods of time. The electric motor is mainly for assisting the gas engine like when accelerating or driving at slow speeds like in a parking lot. The newer ones do have a EV mode that can go a lot farther without using gas. Those ones will have a LOT larger battery.
MrWoodii I comb the junkyards here in busy traffic filled so cal and I always look at the odometers on crown Vickie's, so far a yellow cab taxi that was rear ended (that is what sent it there) had 759,xxx miles on it, I have seen at least 100 with 600+ thousand miles and so many 500k+ milage cars that I can't count them. Those are commercial cars so you know they were abused from day one. Also the Lincoln Town car on the same platform deserves honorable mention on Craigslist I have seen fleet limos with 400k numerous times. the first gen modular V8 is a damn good engine. my neighbor has a 5.4 f150 from 2001 and it just rolled 440k with no trans or major engine work.
I gave one to my daughter .it had one dead cell . I bouht a box of 15 cells off Ebay foe 40 dollars for all.. yes it get 55 mpg. I got 626 fro.m 25 dollars of gas. I paid 300 It even has mitchlan tires on it. Goes 0 to 60 In 4 seconds ss and it the most funniest car I have ever driven. 2002 Prius has the power steering in thewtwering wheel column. I love all you do is hold the wheel still and it goes straight. I drive with the tires not the steeri. g wheel. I love it and so does she I bought the other two Prius with orange trianglegs..one would not start the other would start but not go.in reverse and all kinds of flashing lights and console light on and off right and dim and I could floor the gas pedal and the engine would rev like a jet but not go more than 15 mph. We took the traction batter out and there was o e cell bad just like.the other Prius. I put an Ebay spare in.it and it run like new gets awesome gas mileage and works perfect. The third Prius I got for 300 again. It is missing a front bumper and the 12 volt battery needed . charging.and the inverter pump is working half the time causing the orange triangle . I cleaned ot.and the triangle went off and I use that car as a glorified luxurious golf car for riding the dirt roads and couches try side. I intend to use it as a home power generator..yes there are lots to make.your Prius a backup generator for your house to run off grid. All the components are already in.the car You add a few parts A second battery and a couple of other inverters and your car runs the house forweeks. Starting and stopping as power is needed. I love my Prius,s.
I’ve been thinking of a used Prius to replace my 18 year old Corolla that just won’t quit. (It still gets 40 on the highway.) My Corolla is long in the tooth and isn’t worth much on resale but I don’t want to spend a lot on another car. Thanks for helping me decide to pursue a used Prius!
Yes prius isnt the most luxurious car or best looking car but I've had my 2010 prius for 7 years and I've never had a problem with it other than a dead battery that I had to jump with my truck ,,, I've had a BMW ,focus, infinity, jeep liberty,Nissan frontier, spider, and the prius is by far the best car I've ever owned I've put rims on it 17" alloy wheels roof rack and bike rack, I've driven it to Los Angeles from Seattle it only took 80$ worth of gas and still had half of gas left in the tank when I got to L.A ,, trust me ppl prius is UNDERRATED
Acoustic Chords u owned a BMW? And u still drive this prius? This car is super rare in Saudi Arabia atleast the city I live in have seen around 7-8 and the reason it's so rare is because I heard it's bot realiable compared to Toyota Corolla or Camry
Both my wife and I owned a Prius. I had the regular model, she had the slightly larger Prius V. We absolutely loved them, but they did have one drawback. Twice we were stuck in our home for days after two significant snow storms, and our local municipality laying down on the job and not properly plowing our cul-de-sac. Unfortunately, the Prius has very little ground clearance and is only 2 wheel drive. After the second time getting snowed in, the minute the road cleared I went straight to the Toyota dealership and traded her in for the RAV4 Hybrid. I absolutely love this vehicle. The MPG is not as good as the Prius, but the ground clearance and AWD make it worth it.
Loftworthy Auris has a very similiar to prius hybrid tech (if not the same), but looks way better and is cheaper (and smaller) so it's normal to see them. And it's a toyota, taxi drivers want reliability, not speed or sporty handling
As a disclaimer, I must state that the following statement is from someone who is heavily biased and, someone who wants to run every Prius off the damn road before they fill every corner of Earth with Smug. That said, I think this was a decent purchase and you should run it until the batteries or something else becomes problematic and then get rid of it. If it seems moderately reliable and can save you money, that's great, it means the rest of the cars in the fleet can get some attention.
Dead Reckon thank you. This car gets a lot of crap because of ignorance. It’s a Toyota, what can you ask of it besides running for decades? Lots of undeserved hatred is pointed at this car because of ignorance. Thank you for understanding.
I bought a 2005 Prius with 135000 mi and sent my 2017 Trax with 11900 onto a car dealerships lot after Jan 2021 for obvious reasons, gas prices were going to go up. Love this car. Yes, I play the mpg game and get between 49 - 65 mpg consistently. These cars handle well also. I’ve had an Audi A4 Quattro and it was only slightly better in the corners. At $3 a gallon for gas a fill up is about $19-21. As a work car I highly recommend one!!
I actually like that version of the Prius the best. Even thought the amazing techy options of the time can seem dated today. What did you do with the old cells?
Bro I literally just bought a 2008 for $300 they thought the hybrid battery was dead but it was the regular battery. Score! Lol
Hahaha
DAMN how cheap can you drive. That thing is reliable as fuck.
What town do you live in?
i bought a 2015 Prius Persona Series model.Toyota North America told me that the hybrid battery is covered under warranty for 150K miles.

Super quiet too
They're just cars at the end of the day, nothing more and nothing less. So long as it does the job it's okay in my book
Fearbleeds same thing happened to me! as soon as I got in one, I fell in love with it! Love mine now !
It's a car not your date. Who cares what it looks like?
Spacious my ass only place that got room is the trunk
Love my 2002 Prius!!! We replaced that battery I. September 2017 when it had 350k miles on it. I am currently at 359k total mileage. Still getting 36mpg.

Only once.

If they all measure at 7.4v but a couple measure
6.5v or such, replace those cells.

I just sold my 2007 with 270k miles on it, the hybrid battery somehow still fully charges no problem and has never been touched before! Same thing just happened to my Prius! Thanks for mentioning this!
The most definitive answer was from a young lady who quipped, “The reason that so many guys hate Priuses is because they fear that their peepees aren’t big enough!”
Suddenly, it all made sense!
I thought I was the only one that loved the Prius.

Don't think I'd ever have a hybrid (never say never) but you're absolutely right. Toyota vehicles areawesome!!!
DJ MotoVlogs what wheel drive is it?
harry lonsdale Front.
Fortunate for you guys, rims, tyres and anti-roll bars are cheap in the US.
toyotaprius79 Interesting. I think we will keep it stock and floaty tho because our roads are horrible here and my GF could care less. Lol
Mine has a scat so i go 0-60 in 3.8
Me too!!!
I own a Zo6 and a Prius. No joke I pick the Prius 95% of the time. Thank you for allowing me to come out of the Prius closet.
I've telling people Prius is the best for all sort of reasons for long time no one believes me. Well time certainly proved it 🙂

yee thats what I want to do with mine is rebuild the engine and supercharge it. its automatic but I want to swap the transmission for a 5 speed.

Oh i like 2018 toyota prius 3.

Three and a half thousand comments and no one has mentioned that the individual pieces in the battery aren't cells, they are called modules. The modules internally are 6 cells in series. 2 modules in series are a block.
Daniel Armstrong is there a unit above block?
Daniel Armstrong thanks Bill Nye!
Just to clarify:
6 1.2v cells in a 7.2v module
2 modules in a block
The service plug/HV fuse splits the pack into halves, 19 modules each for NHW11, 19 and 9 modules each for NHW20.

There has been a lot of debate whether you can turbo a Prius. Some say it won't work, or at least not well. I say you try it!
So far the only way to make it fast is by not using the brakes. ... By improving handling and weight distribution.
there is a website where someone turbo'd a prius back in the early days of hybrids
you could if you deleted the computer systems
Remix Island Music
But then the electric motor and the battery wouldn't work... I think the only real way is an engine swap

Kudos on the video!
green bean battery will come to your driveway and change out the battery for $1500, with a 5 year warranty.
Kay Mann Are they available in Canada?
@@1jackvalley580 wow that's sneaky

380 mile with half tank? You joking?
@@robikochinchaladze3364 oh man, this is an old comment lol
but yeah! Kennewick WA, to Eugene, OR. It was also just a bit over a half tank used, as well. We were shocked lol

...truly great cars. They have a strong following and I'd love to see this platform continue to succeed and develop further.
Make it cool , that would be a one of a kind series on UA-cam
I agree. :)
Impossible to make prius cool. They should all be destroyed.
Malik Allaham there's a few people in Japan with modified Prius's. They actually look really cool.
2jz swap
True.😋
Most Taxis here in Australia are Toyota Prius or Toyota Camrys in the Hybrid versions.
They try to give the drivers the least petrol possible so they can make a bomb.
Sean Zappulla same for Barcelona.
Same here in New Zealand except we also have Prius V’s
Same in U.S.
Taxis in Milton Keynes are mostly Toyota Prius or Avensis with some sticking with the half-arsed Vauxhalls.
I like my Prius more and more the more I get to know her... .. Thanks for sharing!
Gabrielle Angel Lilly what year is yours ?
2010. I had a 2005 for 7-8 years before this.
Gabrielle Angel Lilly what was your experience like with that one ? Obviously good right since you have a 2010 now ? Did u ever have to replace your battery?
Nice have safe drives
Thanks, Panda Panda!
Everyone I know who has Prius loves it. Also the rear seat room is phenomenal and the car is very comfortable on long drives. And visability except to the back is great
Hoovie: Transmission “never fails”
Me when I had to reverse out of a kfc because my car no longer went forward: 😑😑😑
Thanks for the video!
the amount of subtle jokes in this video has me ROLLLLING.
"stomp that sucker up to 60 MPH" *cuts to pruis moving slowly* DEAD
Agreed, this guy is an entertainer!
Battery's DEAD so that made it orders of magnitude slower than normal.
BAHAHHAHAHA You just drifted a PRIUS!!!!! That was amazing.
The repair tech at my Toyota dealer says I should expect 400k to 600k miles. WoHoo!
I just by a 2006 Prius hybrid my first hybrid car ever had if that's true then man I made a good choice on a car
When your generator goes bad it's a $5,000 part. And you can't fix it either. Just have to buy the whole assembly.
AHDBification the generator is an engine. of course the engine not working is expensive
VividBagels The generator sits next to the engine and takes the place of what, in a normal car, would be called an 'alternator'.
One good thing with working on the battery is it's accessible, not covered in rust and not greasy.
Proud Prius owner here! Sitting next to my F-150 4x4. Ying & yang.
Kevin R. The money you save daily driving the Prius, goes into off road goodies for the F-150!
More like car seats, and the 8 QUARTS of synthetic oil it holds in its belly. HA!
Kevin R. Then I take it your F150 is the Family Barge?
Kevin R. The Prius is actually a very good daily
Hoovie has been suffering a midlife crisis for a while now buying all of these cars lol

But he's not old though.
Chris Ayres He's only in his 30's, so yeah he's batshit insane.
hoovie needs a real woman

Love my Prius. Best car if you love money as well.
Get a Chevy volt ,it’s better if you love more money as well
Chevy volt sucks, Get a Hyundai ioniq get the most MPG and have a life time warranty on the battery. Hyundai best warranty better than a lot of car out there.
Yup. They don't even need FRONT brakes until ~100K.
The repaires are very expensive though
I replaced the hybrid battery at 190 k miles and it has now has a lifetime warranty ( it cost $1800) but other than that, this car has been hassle free and with under $ 30 to fill up the tank I'm constantly saving a ton of money....I plan to run this Prius ( which is loaded with all kinds of great stuff like a solar roof ) to the ground....I'm going to 500 k miles plus. This is the best car I've had.....I had a Mercedes before and it drove nice but there was always something wrong with it.
You should have cleaned the battery fan!
LMAO IT HAS A TOW HITCH!
do a video towing a trailer with it
It's so the Prius can be towed by a trailer
It was for towing the 58 batteries it needed to get around before Hoovie's work...
Na the prius can handle a trailer fine. idk why people think the prius is so slow and underpowered, it has an electric engine ffs
2006 prius has around ~145 horse power including the electric motor
Look up Prius towing a trailer or trailer pushing a Prius
I own a 2006 Prius, and its transmission failed, so it CAN happen :). At $7k, I SHOULD have totalled it out then. Great to know about the alternatives to replacing hybrid battery @ dealer as I ate that one about a year back too.
YIKES SO REPAIRS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE??
You've spent how much?
At that point wouldn't it be a good idea to get the Wizard as an employee?
It's perfectly fine to be a car enthusiast and be eco aware in this day and age as the car industry evolves.
oli3 prius is the worst car for the environment
The ChrisFix video on replacing the Prius battery on UA-cam is amazing to watch.
When I said get a Toyota, I was secretly hoping for a Tacoma S Runner.... not this 😭
hahahhahahah!
TacoTom more like wanted anything but a Prius.
you like tacos even in car names
TacoTom is that why your name says taco
you mean X runner?
Fixed my 02' battery with $150.
I found it was just a wire harness with sensors on it that runs along one side of the pack. A few of the sensors were corroded and not sending the correct voltage to the computer. I assume it's a common problem with the 1st gen Prius. Bought new harness at dealer for $150.
That and buss bar corrosion. Great cars, aint they?
Brian Lamberts that's what corroded the sensors.
I can honestly say that out of all the used cars I've owned this little Prius has given me the most bang for my buck.
Prius owners don't deserve the hate. Most people just want a super reliable machine that doesn't cost much to run, roomy, decent comfort for a low price.
"Despite having a dead battery the car drives 10 miles below the speed limit in the left lane as well as it did when the car was new"
The bumper sticker ever Prius should have. LOL
How long have you been driving it this way? I was just wondering because I'm in the same boat and don't have the money to fix it right now. Didn't know if it was just suppose to be a temporary thing due to future problems
@@karenkramer3760 you could use regular car batteries wire in series to substitute for the nikel metalhydite battery.
April 2021: My battery failed in March 2020 - and although it's stored out of state, when I visit that location it gets me around town - pushing about 29 MPGs (until I dive in and fix the battery - soon I hope).
Expected a bigger battery
Rick UK
That's what she said! Poor Hoovie😂
Rick UK same, was expecting the whole entire battery pack to take up the entire spare wheel space
TheFlatEarthIsReal you hope
he's right
u made me buy my first prius i love it !!!
Nice video. Two years ago I bought a battery for our 2006 Prius at Bumblebee Batteries Gresham OR for $1300. Averaging 48 mpg. Amazing car.
About domestic cars reaching 300K miles... Ford Crown Victoria
90s Suburban, GM truck. Reach 300k miles no sweat.
yeah I'm sure he's just bias, the LS motors reach 300k all the time. Our Ford f250 7.3 diesel has a little over 800k
See Buick park avenues everywhere with 300k+ miles. The 3800 v6 gotta be one of the best v6 ever made.
1998 Chevy Cavalier near 250K, no issues.
I paid 300
It even has mitchlan tires on it. Goes 0 to 60 In 4 seconds ss and it the most funniest car I have ever driven. 2002 Prius has the power steering in thewtwering wheel column. I love all you do is hold the wheel still and it goes straight. I drive with the tires not the steeri. g wheel. I love it and so does she
I bought the other two Prius with orange trianglegs..one would not start the other would start but not go.in reverse and all kinds of flashing lights and console light on and off right and dim and I could floor the gas pedal and the engine would rev like a jet but not go more than 15 mph. All the components are already in.the car
You add a few parts
A second battery and a couple of other inverters and your car runs the house forweeks. Starting and stopping as power is needed. I love my Prius,s.
Wow running your entire house off a Prius conversion, thats a youtube video in itself!
Excellent video!! And I enjoyed the humor too. The ability to change out the batteries yourself really make this car a winner for long term use.
I've always thought real car guys love all things on wheels XD So yeah, make it cool!
please make a 2jz swap
There used as Taxis here in Australia
Sean Zappulla so as in Barcelona
Here in Britain too, although Aurises are getting more popular.
In the US too
Loftworthy Auris has a very similiar to prius hybrid tech (if not the same), but looks way better and is cheaper (and smaller) so it's normal to see them. And it's a toyota, taxi drivers want reliability, not speed or sporty handling
Very few folks buy them for the family car in Australia
*it's now 2020, and safe to say the car wizard has been eating steak for three years*
I bought a 2005 Prius with 135000 mi and sent my 2017 Trax with 11900 onto a car dealerships lot after Jan 2021 for obvious reasons, gas prices were going to go up.
