This night six years ago , 23 September, I searched my phone for a song to play to my father. It was just before midnight. I told him I'd play a song and then we'd rest. As the autumn leaves were turning and I found the Furey's "First Leaves of Autumn". I didn't know the lyrics at the time. I played the song, lay down on the fold out visitor's bed in his hospice room and fell asleep. At around 4 I am I awoke and held his hand as he breathed his last breath. I rarely listen to this beautiful song whose lyrics resonated so much with those last hours but I just had the urge to right now. R.I.P Daddy
Lost my dad to suicide 28 years ago was 11 at the time . This song makes me feel close to him . Memories of him listening to this will stay with me forever
Lost my only son age 35 the song and the date the leaves were falling in the cemetery at the time the water still flows from my eyes love to meet finbar sam
One of the best by the fureys ❤️could listen to it all day everyday, most people my age (21) wouldn't know these songs. Finbar is a special singer ☘️☘️
Most people my age ,64, dont know it either. I first heard it when my mate brought his Gallagher And Lyle albums down to my mams house for us to listen to long ago.
'From the making to the breaking of the day you said goodbye.' I've lived that day for 46 years in my head. Every time i hear this song it still breaks my heart. Love you Mum from now until we hopefully meet again.
When I took my mother home from an X-ray in the hospital she’d worked and trained in, in July 3 2013, and she looked at this beautiful shrub she’d planted and said I’ve never seen it like that so beautiful that’s before something; and then she died on 22/8, before the first leaves of autumn
Love his peculiar way of saying or singing words. My mother died 22 august. Technically in British summer. But in Irish autumn. The last conversation we had was about her favourite tree. And I did beg her I’ll admit to talk to me.
I couldn't agree more with your two phrases and this song. One of the most beautiful songs ever sung by the fureys, and at the same time one of the saddest and sensitive. Finbar's rolling deep voice gives it that special edge. Thanks for posting it.
Thank you for posting this song. I'd never heard it before...So beautiful, yet so sad! The Fureys are indeed talented! We never heard that much about them in the USA. Thank you again.:-)
Such chill out music love it grew up on it my mother is from ballyfermot took her to see and meet The Fureys last month she got to have her picture took with george, eddie and davey arthur! :) what a lovely bunch of people so down to earth.
Great song and your words are so true. As a "plastic" I've heard this song many times. It now has particular resonance for me, giving this song a beautiful but biter sweet place in my self
Lyrics: As the daylight turns to starlight and the season turns to change, I get the same ould answers but the question still re - - mains. This song was played at brothers funeral 23 years ago,he died at 34 I was 24,we all could Relate to his fiancé and him as they had a short but loving relationship and where meant for each other.
What I can guarantee you, as truth from my life is this, irish men will not display verbal emotion what they can write song, poetry abut amonst us Irish women as much to show love.... but God love 'em for what they can do. Ne'er tire of it ever, give the song the love the praise til I drop from it all. Pennywhistles haunt fiddles jaunt, madolins strum and lil' banjos pick in simple chord. Take me away... I am older now, nothin' matters but his.
