Boxing Equipment - Why the Reflex Ball is not a Reflex Ball

- www.myboxingcoach.com - Beyond the boxing equipment basics of hand wraps and gloves, what other options are there to enhance your boxing training and boxing skills?
In this video I am going to look at two options. The reflex ball and the resistance band.
Interestingly, I don't think that the reflex ball should be called the reflex ball, I think that it should be called the co-ordination ball.
For me, the reflex ball is about using your peripheral vision, developing your hand/eye co-ordination and ensuring that your shots are nice and straight.
Peripheral vision is vital for boxers, developing an ability to track the speed and direction of objects that are whizzing about in front of you.
This for me is the real strength of the reflex ball, or what I call the co-ordination ball...not sure my new name is going to catch on.
I also look at the resistance band. The resistance band is another piece of kit that I like as it focuses on the muscle groups that are very specific to punching.
I like to push for endurance, so high punching volume. Also, I tend to encourage the use for 1 round out of 3.
Cheers
Fran

I can assure you that when a ball attached to a string is flying back toward your hands or your face at a fast rate , and your hands are able time the fast rate of the ball , or your head dodges the ball without being mindful of what’s happening , then that is exactly what reflexes are. The ball does train your reflexes period , but yes , it’s mainly used for hand eye coordination .
You're not in boxing, if you were you would understand what he's saying
I like it for shadow boxing makes you feel less of a prat when your new to it and gives you somthing to concentrate on
Agreed. Listen to him breathe hella hard. It's a great training asset. I use it everyday. 👊
bro I got worried i wasted 9 dollars
@@TheSYPHERIAthere are videos from pro boxers who disagrees with him
I use that ball it’s brilliant for hand eye coordination. Good for landing shots when people are bobbing and weaving in front of you.
We used to practise with a micro punch bag style hanging tennis ball on elastic. It certainly improved my accuracy and ability to deflect and get out the way of shots.
It's the same as doing keepie uppies in football. Excellent for balance and coordination. Doing them alone won't make you a good footballer, but it will sharpen your instincts and touch.
I never thought I would like the “reflex’ ball”. I have found it to be good for coordination and to step down the intensity while staying active.
Another great educational video from the great coach frans 🥊💥💥💥

Not sure if it helped my boxing so much but it did help me develop the pectoral muscle tremendously.
Recently got this, never been into boxing and probably never will but this ball is must have for EVERYONE no matter what sport he do or even if he doesn't do any sport
Great video again coach.
I would be lucky to hit that ball once! You have amazing skill Fran!
👍
Here’s the annoying thing that most athletes don’t realize they aren’t training reflex by definition they are training reaction. Reflex is often involuntary, doesn’t need to be learned, and isn’t a conscious action. Reflex is like blinking, it’s something that is done without learning, and without thought. Whereas, in sports like formula 1 driving or boxing you are reacting to stimulus. In formula 1 it might be the car in front slowing rapidly or changing gear. In boxing you’re reacting to the ball coming back at you. You are training reaction and timing based on the movement of the ball. It’s not anyone’s fault this misinterpretation exists it’s one of those things like people only using 10% of their brains. We heard it somewhere and believed it to be true. So yes and no, this is reaction training. Even when a punch is thrown based on pattern recognition and micro movements a boxer responds. Average person that isn’t used to seeing that wouldn’t see these movements.
I do use the reflex ball with gloves the ball allows me to focus on the target as I move and gives my arms endurance balance…I haven’t fought anyone after using it , but I like using boxing training as a good way to keep fit…

Great excercise💯💯

If you bring the cord back to chest level it is definitely a reflex gadget. Don’t use so much length and it works better in my experience
I've been using the reflex ball for a while. It was so cheap I was like, sure. Turns out it's decent. Slip and let it go by you and do a 180 every so often. Nice warm up. Just ordered a similar gadget to the bands he showed. Supposed to be here today. At the least they add some variety and options to a routine.
Do you have a link to the bands?
@@dugntami1375 I got the power punch pro thing that's been all up my face on instagram. powerpunchpro.com/
I'm digging it. My shoulders were screamin' at me after two 3 minute rounds of shadow boxing. My arms are long enough as to have constant tension with guard up. I've heard some complaints about bands being too long for some people.
@@dugntami1375 you could diy. It's old soviet boxing trick.
I had one of these balls but the elastic broke after a few weeks sadly. They don't make things like they used to. It was good fun while it lasted. I have been using resistance bands for years now too. I use them for shadow boxing. i don't like them slung over a stationery pole as some do because that limits your movement and makes the exercise less value. The great thing about the bands is that, unlike hand weights, the resistance comes from movement away from the core not via gravity pulling your hands down. I think for close quarter hooking and uppercuts etc, hand weights come into their own more as the resistance from bands is not so useful for these types of shots. a combination of both at the same time offers the best of both worlds at times.
Agreed, especially on the ability to be mobile with the bands, better than being in situ👍
I personally love the double end bag
Good advice. Tks
Hi Fran - love the channel. Can you recommend any kit for someone training alone to build reactions/reflexes to incoming punches, i.e. slipping, dipping, leans, etc, please?
I recommend using double end bag for reflex and slipping punches
I love those! They are fun and bring me through quarantine
Thank you for the info I’m currently in the market for both of these products
Resistance bands behind your back are awesome while shadow boxing. They really tighten you up and bring your hands right back to where they need to be after throwing a punch. Good for muscle memory.
Is resistance band increase punching power or not?
@@hafidzmohmar5620 they increase your strength using resistance while also doing what the original commenter said. So yes they do increase strength when used properly

All tools can give you something as long as you use them with serious purpose. I agree this is more like a toy, but I can see some value in it for coordination.
On the other hand, I'd love to be trained by Mr. Sands. Such a great coach; pure boxing knowledge.
Thank you 👍
I use the reflex ball with two lbs egg weights. Works wonders together. Great change of pace cardio routine. Just bought heavier egg weights.
Does egg weight increase hand speed
Thanks for the video.great info. looking younger everyday my friend, great stuff
Haha. Thanks pal 👍

@@myboxingcoach i wanted to ask i boxed for 7 months hardly, shadowboxed barely gained speed, now I've uped the shadow boxing more then hitting the bag, gaining speed is there a reason for that ,while the bag catches my punches, shadowboxing seems to make me quicker,is it coincidental or does shadowboxing make u quicker n thanks
thank you sir
Good point, it’s only a reflex ball if you’re using your reflex to react to the ball instead on controlling it. Let’s call it a Fran Sands ball from now on.
😂 I feel a merch opportunity coming on
@@myboxingcoach please 🙏
@@myboxingcoach do it ;)
Can you add links for the stretch band please.
I like to use the reflex ball when I am resting between rounds on the bag. I'm never just standing there doing nothing, this is a good active recovery tool. It's a test to see, how well your hand eye coordination holds up when you're tired. After, I've recovered, I put the ball under my chin and go back on the bagwork. 3 mins bag work and 3 mins reflex ball recovery.
Could you possibly explain a little more on the hand wrap to get the ball to fly more she got a straight because of the ball hitting the ball curvature of your knuckles since it flying in random directions as you mentioned at 3:02
Agree with the peripheral vision just like a speedbag it works that well. However if you incorporate movement, angles, blocks, as well as other defense, it works the reflexes well.
What's your opinion about striking moves?Using this " reflex ball " let's say for learning coordination, will not cause bad habits when striking and then cause injures striking sth harder for exp.boxing bag?I'm grappler (BJJ) no time for proper boxing lessons (in past, used to Muay Thai, )I just want to recall boxing moves, and get some freshness in standing position.Sorry if any mistakes (not native Eng.)
I like that “reflex ball” but I never got it for boxing purposes. I’m actually a goalkeeper and this tool helps a lot with your reaction time and focus on the ball. If you play soccer as a keeper I would totally recommend it.
This is why Americans are not good at Football. Sorry, 'Soccer'. I forgot you call a sport that is played with your hands, football.
@Carolyn Mutton only in usa they call it soccer... the rest of the world call it what it is... football cause you actually use your feet
So I have a reflex ball myself and have had to buy up to 6 since I started introducing into my training. Hands down the best way to use this is NOT STATIONARY. I will run 4 miles and walk back in a boxing stance while using the reflex ball and use lots of pivots, side to side movement. As far as controlling the ball if the ball moves out of your angle you use your feet and a true boxers stance to really re position yourself to keep punching. Hooks are difficult because you HAVE to follow up with another jab or pivot. Elbows are Also lots of fun but you might have to use a double jab before it. Jab jab jab is how to keep that ball where u want it and use COMBINATIONS the ball surprisingly goes where it needs to go if you use the right punching structure. Blocking with the reflex ball is also great because you have to block and move your feet so that the ball doesn't just drop and you create distance and then recontrol with a jab. Hopefully this might help someone.
Hi Fran I’ve had one white collar fight, I’d like to have amateur fights but I’m worried about the impact boxing could have on my brain. There isn’t much talk about it on UA-cam channels. Any advice/resource directions? I’m also worried about breaking my nose but I think that one is more of a you just got to get on with it.
Lastly, I don’t like the thought of hurting others but love boxing itself. Any helpful mindsets or advice I could adopt? Many thanks
Follow your heart & put all of your worries aside my friend. If you want to have more fights do it until you don't want to anymore is my humble advice
Grow a pair.
Great video! btw, can you make a video on double end bag drills? i bought one during the lockdown, and i plan to train with it more regularly. thanks in advance!
I can give you some tips if you’re interested, I love the double end it’s my favourite piece of equipment I think. There’s a lot of things people miss out on with the double end that I can give you tips on, for instance, a lot of people will throw a punch like an orthodox right cross, and then EVERY TIME they will continue to lean their body to their left so that they slip the double end bag by having their head to the left of the bag/ball. Well, that doesn’t really help all that much because it doesn’t take any skill, you’re already basically slipping to the left when throwing a right cross. If you pretend to throw an orthodox right cross in the air but without actually throwing the punch, you’ll see that you have slipped over to your left (your lead side). So what I like to do is mix in throwing crosses and then slipping to my rear side, or throwing jabs and slipping to my lead side, it will be awkward at first throwing a cross which makes you want to rotate your body over to your lead side, but being able to throw a cross and quickly slip to your rear side is a great skill to have. It’s great because you can imagine throwing a jab at the double end, then slipping to your lead side when the bag comes back (as if you just slipped an orthodox opponents right cross) and then you can throw a counter left hook. You can even throw a counter left hook to the “body” (which is just the string of the double end), it’s difficult to not the string but it’s still useful. And it trains you to keep your opposite hand/shield up as you throw your lead hooks to the body, or else the bag could hit you in the face. Also don’t forget you can uppercut the double end. Hope you have fun with your setup!
@@CenturianEagle I work with the double end bag often, it's one of my favorites and I have fun with it, and I just read your reply and liked what I read I'm definitely going to try that out. Thank you for the advice
@@kennethduff248 hey no problem! I’m glad you understood what I was saying, I was worried no one would get it, I feel like most people wouldn’t understand it lol.it’s like most people can’t even read ya know!? Or they misinterpret plain English sometimes 😅. But yeah I’m happy you knew what I was trying to say, let me know how it goes and if there’s anything else you want to try out! I also like to do sidestep counters a lot; so for example I will throw a jab+cross, and then when the bag/ball is coming back at me, I avoid it by stepping to my right (first with my rear leg, then my lead leg) and as soon as my rear foot touches I throw a counter cross. You may of course have to delay when you start your counter cross depending on the bags swing speed. You can also throw a rear hook, rear overhand, rear uppercut, etc, you could throw with your lead too like maybe a counter jab or counter left hook but it will feel a little awkward. Anyway when you sidestep a shot like that, you can slip a little bit too but it’s unnecessary to do a large movement because the stepping will do most of the evading. A very small step can clear you of the ball (or an opponents Straight punch) anyway I hope this also makes sense, have fun!
@@CenturianEagle it makes perfect sense thank you. I'm always looking to learn as much as I can from others and I try to bring different thing to the table then what's being taught at the gym, we all learn and train from the same place so I like to come in with something different it's gives me the edge. But I like the sidestep with the right hand you just mentioned it is easier to do on a heavy bag because I have to time it right with the double end bag like you mentioned. Thanks for the tips I'm always looking to improve. Thank you and God bless you and yours
Having add it's great
That ball is £4 on Amazon right now, I think of it more as a rhythm ball myself. Really focuses the mind which is nice.
Iv heard some coaches say resistance bands can ruin technique but I don't agree. 👍
ANTI AGING! It certainly is GREAT to keep your mind and brain working. If you don't use your reaction time, hand/eye coordination, you will lose it. You will certainly burn calories while having fun instead of sitting watching videos.
Watching from the Philippines!
Coach can you suggest a compound workout that can be done at home?
Hey Julius, go to myboxingcoach.com, and down load Fran’s Beginner Boxing Toolkit. It’s exactly what you’re looking for, even if you aren’t a beginner. It’s honestly really, really good.
Thanks mate👍
@@myboxingcoach Fran thank u for making this video. Those things don’t do much and it’s not “training” it’s a fun thing to mess around with. Shadow boxing heavy bag and or a double end
Bag are much more more effective. The “reflex ball” is not.
it could be used to cross training for padel or tennis sport?
The second tool ive seen evander holyfield use that many years ago
honestly you could just hit it harder and softer to vary what it does
I made my own elastic and ball tool for a couple bucks
Would you recommend this reflex ball over a double end bag or get them both?
Double end bag for sure as a priority, great piece of kit.
@@myboxingcoach Thanks, coach!!
It Can be ,Depends on How its used..See Usky Boxer from Ukraine & how much you Practice..But it's more about Hand Eye tho for the Beginners.
Hello sir should my double end bag strings be loose or tight?
I prefer tight 👍
I use for rythum with foot work
There's literally a video of Lomachenko using this
You wanna get your hand eye better just play tons of table tennis in your down time. Lots of boxers are actually pretty good on table tennis
Soft ones are kind bad. They do not fly as good as tennis one, but tennis one hits harder.
I did throw it up with left hand
Throw big rights
And it comes back so fast
I moved my head away 😅
Génial coach yassine d'Algérie A Laprochain
Concentration!
I don't get the debate . they good for coordination and reflexes
So it’s not that it’s not a good tool jus that it is wrongly named?
I think the harder balls are easier to hit but much more scary if they hit you
It also teaches you power control. The harder you hit, the harder it comes back at you. On a heavy bag, you can get away with sloppy power shots since there's no consequences. On a reflex ball, you better have your defense on point because the harder you hit, the harder and faster that ball comes back at your face. Just like in a real fight.
Science disagrees with your premise there was a sign showing that tested boxers reflexes before and after the use of one of these reflex balls and all of the subjects reflexes skyrocketed
This piece of kit always seemed like fluff to me, seems like your body isn't in a position to punch with good form. I'm willing to try it out though. love to see you do a personal take on the slip bag like you did this though, the slip bag is one of my favorites, though I've seen plenty of people online who thinks it's fluff too but I really enjoy it personally. Making one from a string and a tennis ball cost practically nothing too
Honestly seems like a waste of time but if you have fun with it, it's okay. The important thing is to keep having fun with pursuing your goals
Agree. One came free with my Double End Bag, used it a few times, passed it on to a friend
Slip bag is awesome if used right. Slipping in shadowboxing is always flawless. The maize ball isn’t going to stop because you messed up. Every time it passes see how many proper punches you can throw before it comes back. Good for balance, speed, and power.
Si la utilizas para introducirla por el recto, entonces no es de reflejos.
A lot of very good strikers use this type of reflex ball and swear by it. I respect your opinion but I think these devices have much more value than you give then credit for
Looks gimmicky to me. Get you kids to shoot nerf gun bullets at you to dodge- that trains reflexes and they love it.
I have it, its cheap but it sucks i rather shadow box
Yep. Should NEVER replace shadow boxing. Just something to add on to your sessions👍
Thank you for even thinking to recommend things! Very cool.
Not on topic but I have a question: Why is a tight double end bag SO hard to hit? 😵😖😠...😂. It's literally right there but IF it moves at all, the snap back is crazy fast. Most people have to get right up on it and then paw at it like kittens. 😂 Not only is it incredibly hard to hit, but you get the added bonus of looking like a COMPLETE idiot when you try. 😂 WHY WOULD THEY BE SET UP LIKE THAT!? 😵
Start light.
Single jab or cross.
You'll be hitting the Double End Bag like Pac Man in no time ;)
Hand to eye cordanation and timing, is what this ball does, please checkout my channel, i punch a mini tennis ball, and a Squash ball.
reflex ball are all wrong as they get you to push and prod your punches not bang them with speed
Never like this thing. I spent most of the time trying to punch it while looking down, i don't wanna fight a kid
It's called a coordination ball.... the Chinese who make them by the masses can't translate lol
Glad you're not my coach
So am I
@@myboxingcoach you give bad advice. Are you sure this is the right career for you...
