[WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE LIST BELOW]
Hey guys! Just a couple of things I wanted to address after reading your many comments. Firstly, really cool to hear all of your thoughts when it comes to these tracks. Of course everyone has different views, which I anticipated, but I was also surprised to see so many people agree with what I expected to be some of my less-popular opinions (including what I put at #1…) Either way, it all goes to show that many of us really do care about these tracks and - even if you don’t concur with my list - that’s something that we can all agree on.
The second thing is when it comes to showing maps for each track. Why didn’t I do this? Well the simple answer is that I wanted to originally, but decided against it since I couldn’t get decent looking track maps for every circuit. Seriously, for some tracks all I could find was the one on their GT Wiki page which look like they’ve been traced by hand in MS Paint…
In this case I prioritised clean visuals over convenience and I appreciate that many people would’ve preferred that I included them anyway. To make up for that, here’s a link to the GT Wiki list of every circuit in Gran Turismo (gran-turismo.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Gran_Turismo_courses). If you want a refresher on the layout of each track, find their name in the list and click on the link to take you to their main page. It’s not ideal, but still easier than having to fire up each game and look for yourselves.
And the final thing is that I got a few comments assuming this would be a tier list. Of course that was what I was going for with the design of the thumbnail, but I chose to rank each circuit individually because I think that’s more interesting. However, as part of the process of making this video, I initially separated each track into 6 tiers and then ranked them to make the process easier. So, what I thought would be cool is if I labelled these tiers and shared them with you as well!
S - Tier: Citta di Aria, Deep Forest, Rome-Night, El Capitan, Circuito de la Sierra, Costa di Amalfi, SSR11, SSR5, Cape Ring, Mid-field Raceway, Matterhorn, Trial Mountain, Dragon Trail - Seaside, Grand Valley Speedway, Autodrome Maggiore, Smokey Mountain North, Apricot Hill, Grindelwald
A - Tier: Circuit de Sainte-Croix, Red Rock Valley, Seattle Circuit, Tokyo R246, Eiger Nordwand Short, Rome Circuit (GT5 & GT6), Rome Circuit (GT2 & GT3), Kyoto Driving Park, Complex String, Tahiti Maze, Grand Valley Highway, Tokyo Expressway Central, Tokyo Expressway South, Cathedral Rocks, Swiss Alps
B - Tier: Circuito de Madrid, Tokyo Expressway East, Dragon Trail - Gardens, Eiger Nordwand Rally Trails, Grand Canyon, High Speed Ring, Autumn Ring, Alsace, Sardegna - Road Track, Motorland, Opera Paris
C - Tier: New York, Hong Kong, Fishermans Ranch, SSR7, Kart Space, Sardegna - Windmills, Lake Louise, Toscana, Tahiti Dirt Route 3, Colorado Springs, Tahiti Road, Seoul Central, George V Paris

yeah, it's kinda hard to conceptualize how the track flows and how the sectors tie together without the track layout as reference.
A track like the NYC Street Circuit and Tsukuba tell you so much just from how the layout looks.
The commentary ends up being too vague for me.

Little known thing about broad bean is that it's a shortened version of the real life Trenton Speedway in New Jersey. The circuit was demolished in the 90s, but it had that very distinct kink on the back stretch.

    • @skraegorn7317
      @skraegorn7317 2 місяці тому +41

Trenton’s kink was less severe, and it didn’t have a 90 degree left turn. There is another demolished track in Iowa called Greenwood Roadway, its layout looked very similar to Deep Forest Raceway but that was more coincidence than direct inspiration.

53:40 the closest thing to a real life "Death Chicane" Is the charlotte motor speedway, which has a road course which used to have a high speed chicane on the backstretch. Lots of cars got torn up because they went too fast and hit a tire barrier which was supposed to stop corner cutting at that part of the circuit. After that disaster of an inaugural Charlotte Roval race in 2018 for NASCAR, the chicane was revamped in 2019.

For 67, the two appearances are slightly different. 3 is more based on Motegi's oval, but 2, with the completed stands and canopy in turns 3 and 4, are based on the early dirt days of the Darlington Speedway over here in the States. After all, Darlington was the direct inspiration for Motegi's oval and even got NASCAR to race on it for a pair of postseason races in the late 90s.

I generally agree with this ranking. I personally enjoy just about all of Gran Turismo’s original circuits. There are a couple of them that irk me somewhat, but I don’t really hate any of them. My absolute favorite course in Gran Turismo is Trial Mountain Circuit, not only for its fast, flowing, and fun layout and picturesque views (most notably for me in GT & GT2), but it’s also the circuit I look back on most fondly.
My late father introduced me to Gran Turismo and video games in general when I was but a toddler, and driving on Trial Mountain Circuit is one my earliest memories of life. To say I have a soft spot for Trial Mountain Circuit would be a massive understatement. I’ve probably driven more laps of it than I have the Nurburgring, another one of my favorites from Gran Turismo.
I’m 24 now, and I still remember driving this course in the Mazda RX-7 Type RB in Arcade Mode in the original Gran Turismo when I was a kid, which in recent years has even started a trend of me driving a Mazda RX-7 on Trial Mountain Circuit whenever I can in every Gran Turismo game I play now. And I have my father to thank for all of it.
If only he was still around to see how far I’ve come in the series since we last played together roughly 20 years ago…

Alright, so I wanted to comment on my opinion / experiences on some of the tracks on your list... I'll just write each circuit's "rank" instead of the name of the actual circuit to prevent spoilers. Likewise, this is my PERSONAL opinion, I grew up with GT1 and GT2, with my most played GT to date being GT4, and never really got into GT5 or GT6 in any serious capacity, and haven't tried Sport / GT7 yet, your mileage may vary. And I personally put a lot of weight on scenery... sometimes above the actual driving to be honest.
With that out of the way...
70 (6:34) : I feel like this one is kind of built half-hearted, in a way, it's too flat and too narrow to be enjoyable, and of course like you mentioned, the prehistoric penalty system imposed by the game just killed it.
67 (8:50) : Personally, I liked the GT2 version better, the canopy made all the difference. Young me always wanted to visit the track in "real life" and spectate from under it, like how you wanted to do the same with no.49. The track just felt so much more lively in GT2.
66 (9:29) : I'd really put this one much higher if I were making this kind of list. Yeah, it's pretty much glorified no. 73... but the views were just breathtaking. I love it. The ocean pier setting reminded me of that one track (Out of Blue) from R4 so much... It's a solid top 10 for me. Speaking of R4... that music at no. 62 really got me.
60 (13:49) : Like I said I grew up with GT2 and I have no memories of this track even existing. Literally, destined to never be well-remembered.
58 (15:21) : There's something about this one that made me really like it. I have fond memories of racing on this track in GTPSP with the ST185 Celica Rally Car. I'd probably place this a bit higher... if only for the sentimental reasons...
57 (16:10) : I'm a sucker for nighttime tracks. I genuinely would put this above the no.44 version...
48 (22:24) : SUPER UNPOPULAR opinion. I'm not going to lie, I can't pinpoint my finger on why, but this one... has a special place in my heart. It's a top 10 if not outright top 5, and it's featured in game(s) I never really played seriously. It's the circuit that made me fall in love with fireworks. And like you mentioned, the online aspect.
46 (24:06) : It's my favourite "original city track that's clearly based on a real life location" in GT4. And it's purely for aesthetic reasons. It's perhaps top 20 or 15 easy for me.
40 (28:20) : Funnily enough it's one of my favourites, had great memories of trying to get fastest times among my relatives back in PS1. The sight of a green FTO jumping through the apex will be forever seared on my mind. And the fact it gets more gorgeous as the series progresses is just the cherry on top.
38 (30:04) : This one is the very first GT4 track I drove back in... 2005 or 2006, I think? And it BLEW my young mind. Those "live" spectators and photographers running on and off the track felt so real. It's the track that made me fall in love with GT4, and even though I don't really like racing on it (or GT rallying in general), I'm willing to rank this one a bit higher.
35, 31, and 30 (32:33) (35:46) (36:26) : I never played Sport or GT7 so can't comment much, yes, but I've watched enough "car preview" YT videos that featured this circuit to put "driving on this part of the expressway in real life" in my bucket list.
25 (41:30) : I despise this track, but that's just me. Young me had horrible memories of spending 8 hours trying to win that one race in GT2 that I can't remember anymore with a faithful recreation of my neighbour's Mazda 323. I'd probably put this on the bottom out of spite.
22 (43:57) : I admit I never liked racing on this circuit... but I love just cruising around enjoying the view. I know, wrong game to do it, but it is what it is.
21 (44:51) : I have a very strong opinion on this one from my time in GT2 but I'd be in trouble if I speak.
20 (45:38) : There's something about this circuit that made it such a bliss to drive. Easy top 10 for me. The last few corners are always a gamble that makes it so much fun... You can drive through them carefully for a slower but more consistent lap time, or if you really need to gain some ground, blast through with minimal / no braking and hope the god of physics is on yours side.
18 (47:16) : One little story I have about this circuit is there's a wooden house midway through the track, and my dad used to say that his great-grandfather lived there "waking up each morning from the sound of Lancer Evos going past". Young me thought that's such an awesome way to live. Somehow it slipped my mind that his great-grandfather had passed away decades before Lancer Evos were a thing.
14 (51:44) : This track is so unabashedly "Gran Turismo" it's a top 10 for me. Same goes for no. 12.
8 (58:19) : While no. 38 is the circuit that got me in love with GT4, THIS one made me love GT for the first time. I know, heavy bias towards nighttime circuits. It's unfortunate people don't seem to remember this track much... I actually liked it a bit more than the no.7. When I was a kid, I always wanted to visit it in "real life" and watch the races from the grandstands. Back when my dreams were so much simpler...
3 (1:04:17) : Why haven't I heard this one before? All those years playing GT2. MattJ better have a video covering this.
2 (1:06:27) : I'm going to get pelted with rocks for this... but personally, I'm more of a no.12 kind of guy.
    1 (1:07:57) : Agreed.
When I realised that the video's going to be in "number rank" format instead of the "S, A, B tier" one, I thought that if I were making this kind of video, I'd put the no.1 on my... no.1. I love this circuit so much. I remember I made a something akin to Top Gear's "Power Lap" where I tested hundreds of different cars on this circuit to see which one was the fastest around the track in GT4 (and GTPSP). Considering I did like 5 "practice laps" with each car before doing the timed lap, along with all the retries I did whenever things didn't go well, combined with playing all the events that featured this circuit, safe to say I did THOUSANDS of laps of this track throughout my years of playing GT4 and GTPSP. It's kind of crazy how we both have the same opinion on this little narrow circuit...
That being said, for me though :
Best for Racing : no. 20
    Most Creative : no. 38
Most Visually Impressive : no. 66
This is such a great video, I really love it. Looking forward for your next rankings...

Agree with the placement of cape ring. Seems like one of the more forgotten tracks but damn i spent a lot of time both racing and drifting on that one. Special Stage route 5 is the first track that comes to mind when people talk about gran turismo, also enjoy route 11. Rome - Night felt like a Nfs underground prologue track, it had that proper street race feel to it.

While watching your footage I legit recognized some of the areas and knew the flow of the corners due to my time driving on the Shutoko Revival Project on AC. Just really cool to be able to see the similarities between the layouts.

I'm very glad you thought of Grand Valley short. In my mind, this track, out of all dirt courses from the GT series could make the best use of a redo:
Make the track a little wider, insert a jump after the first corner, add a banking to the last corner, insert a tabletop at the right-hander, pave start/finish and insert a joker lap somewhere. Voilá, we had a simple but serviceable rallycross track to use Group B cars on!

  • @guillelg4iu
    @guillelg4iu Місяць тому +1

Fun fact about Madrid Circuit: That would indeed be the real track layout, because they scanned that area. You can even see the Fanta ad banners from the era around the circuit, and several businesses and advertisement panels on the rooftops match the ones that were there by that time. Every single street length, orientation and elevation change exists, and every single corner could be executed as is, if someone had the balls to pull it off. Nowadays you cannot reach Puerta del Sol (the hairpin area) by car because it is restricted to pedestrian use only, but you were able to do it when they released it.
I think they made a huge effot to be realistic with it and that is something I like a lot. Maybe it happens to other original circuits but this one is about my city (even my neighbourhood, i went to school a copule blocks away from the easternmost part of the circuit) so i'm able to fully appreciate it

I correct the car and drive backwards into the braking zone, whipping a flawless Rockford Files 180 at 200 mph and take the lead. I only wish I could have recorded that.

Of course even I would disagree with some but that’s not the point. I think nostalgia takes a bit part in the list I would make which may be fair or unfair depending on how you look at it.
I played every game in the years they were available and a lot of gt1 and 2 had some tracks that I really miss in their original design, I even prefer the earlier grand valley speedway in the earlier designs to the later.

Awesome list. I can't fault it too much, but I think you're a madman for putting Citta di Aria anywhere near the top. It's a scenic marvel, but its crushingly unforgiving layout, coupled with its restriction to 2-car battles, makes it a hard sell as a race track. I also think you've done a disservice to the oval courses. They can provide some entertaining battles in the right environment. Not so much the long ones like Special Stage Route X or Test Course, but Broad Bean Raceway and Blue Moon Speedway are fun in their own right.
While I'm on the subject, seeing so many of GT2's tracks not appearing in any sequels really hurts. My all-time favourite, Mid-Field Raceway, came back a few times, but Red Rock Valley, Grindelwald, Rome Night and even Tahiti Road would be a pleasure to drive with modern physics (and what the hell are you doing with that exclusive Pikes Peak license, Polyphony?).

Also I think the prestige/reputation of a track weighs on how good people think it is. For me, the OG Grand Valley is top 5. Not just because of it's layout, it also feels very important. It's almost like the Daytona of GT1 and GT2. Every event there is a big deal. In the GT300 Championship on GT2, you race on the East version of it, almost like a prelude and a warm up event to the big event in the GT500 Championship. The endurance races it has as well. A lot of the newer tracks just don't have that weight. There are no big events in new GT games because they just aren't challenging and focus shifted away from the single player experience. These newer tracks don't build prestige or reputation for their importance to the universe they're in, they're just "Insert this track into the multiplayer rotation for this season". This is why when Polyphony completely redid Grand Valley it upset me so much because it was THE Golden Goose big name track just by reputation alone and it was like they were just shitting on it. I have no reason to give the slightest shit about GVH or any of the newer tracks introduced in the series, it's like they're just there to pad out content in a game that already doesn't fully utilize the content it has to offer.
