One thing that GT4 introduced that people usually just forget about is chassis degradation, and it plays quite a big role in the 24 hours races. When a car is new, the chassis is nice and rigid, but after a while it starts to lose rigidity due to stress (also, when you buy an used car that doesn't have low mileage, it also comes with fully degraded chassis), and the loss of rigidity makes the faster cars behave quite badly, especially under braking. Using the rigidity upgrade will often make racecars overly stiff, but it will also delay the chassis degradation, allowing you to use a rigid car for longer, and the rigidity refreshment plan option allows you to reset the chassis degradation back to zero.
Also, oil does something similar, a fresh oil change will give you a boost of 5% to your engine's power, but will slowly start to drop back to 0 after 500km has been driven.

Your PS2 was fine. There's no real harm in leaving a PS2 on for an extended amount of time. In fact, a processor being consistently hot is probably better than it alternating between cold and hot several times in the same time frame. Metal warming up and cooling down causes it to change size, which leads to mechanical stress on solder joints.
Sure, the fans would incur an additional 24 hours worth of mechanical wear, but that's really nothing compared to the (likely) thousands of hours of power on time they would normally have over a PS2's lifetime.
Now if it's full of dust, that's a whole different issue, and an issue that's shared with most electronics that have fans and are getting old.

  • @rossstewart9475
    @rossstewart9475 8 місяців тому +125

In the always-online gaming landscape, there's one place where I feel endurance races could shine: Co-operative, consecutive, multiplayer.
We often paused and handed off the controller to a friend back in the day, so why not make that mechanic official? You and your friends sign up as a race team and when the first driver pits, their race ends. The next member of the team could receive a notification to say their race is available, and when they load up they could begin from where the first driver left of; Repeat until the race is complete. Minimum two drivers required, and only limited on the upper limit by how many times you'd need to pit.
Obviously this can only work against AI opponents, but otherwise I suspect all the mechanics already exist to make something like this function. Maybe that's a niche feature, but I'd play it!

@@HECKproductions If you were scheduling players to turn up at a specific time to some degree you're right, but I'm not suggesting that: You don't need to keep people together for 24 hours, it's *consecutive* multiplayer or "one after another". When a player finishes their leg, the next player is notified that they have x hours/days to complete their leg or it's passed on to the next person in the team instead.
If you wanted to race against other humans of course, you'd have to have scheduled times and yes - that would result in a probably 50/50 drop out rate, which would feel like 95%.

There's really only been one game where I thoroughly enjoyed endurance racing, and it's as far removed from something like Gran Turismo as you can imagine.
The Crew (the first one) had faction missions which could last from as little as five minutes to several hours depending on the event. The massive map with its different cities and regions, dynamic time and weather but also things like traffic and wild life made them very exciting. I also liked how they had different themes based on where the race would lead, such as a race from coast to coast, or one around the borders of the map, or the longest one taking you along all major landmarks in the United States. These faction missions were the only time where I felt the game really took advantage of its huge map and it's been a shame that subsequent titles couldn't scratch that same itch. The Crew 2 added the ability to switch vehicle types on the fly - even adding planes, boats and bikes while also adding more roads to the map. Yet the longest race in that game is just around 30 minutes and only uses road cars. What a damn shame

Compressing a full day to 24 minutes just feels cartoonish. Before even finishing a single lap of Nürburgring, it'd be night time. 4x time progression is the highest I'd want to go if I wanted it to feel somewhat realistic. 6 hours for a "24" hour endurance race sounds doable for anyone who's moderately interested in racing games, especially if you could suspend the race and take a break, or continue the next day.
It's fine for a game to feature challenges that only some players are interested in. No one's forced to 100% every game they own.

10:24 - funny you specifically mention using US muscle cars at the Seattle City 100 event in GT2, as this is how I got one of my all-time favourite races in any Gran Turismo game! I used a 1970 Dodge Challenger in this exact race, not just a US muscle car but a vintage one - having noticed that the AI were hopeless in the classic muscle cars, and all the main contenders were racing modern ones (97 Camaros, 99 Mustangs, Vipers etc). So tuning up the old Challenger with mainly a few handling mods (no horsepower upgrades!) I ended up having an epic cat and mouse battle with two modern Camaros all race long, only made the pass for the win with two laps to go, and my MOV was I think under 2 seconds? Just a fantastic race! Perfect demonstration of the point you made - entering cars in the spirit of the event, and/or experimenting with handicaps and such, can create such absolute MAGIC in GT endurance races :)

I loved the first time I did it, when it started raining an hour in, and I found out I didn't have rain tires. Emergent gameplay there. But then tried it again and just kept up a good pace and only needed a single pit, and by fortune, won by about the time of a single pit stop.

Just remember that while it feels amazing while you're in that state and your lap times get incredibly fast and consistent it's hell for a good couple of hours after, and your body will be screaming at you to sleep

gran turismo taught me with racing games that 5+ lap races ultimately feels better to run than 1-2 laps because in the event of an accident you have way more time to catch back up. it's way more rewarding than just running to the restart button because you simply don't have enough race to make the comeback.
it's why i kind of dislike how GT4 took away qualifiers for single races. in some series you're expected to gain 5 positions over the course of a single lap in Tokyo R246. like bruh this minds of well be a driving mission.

The problem is you need decent AI and a good performance rating system (to let you know what cars you can bring to a race and have a decent challenge with) to actually make longer races interesting. What usually happens in GT is passing everyone in 1 or 2 laps and then the rest of the race is just a time trial. Or alternatively as in GT7, starting half a minute behind and slowly making your way through slow traffic which isn't really any more exciting.

From the early days of Gran Turismo and staying up way late with my two brothers, grinding out that last Super Speedway run. All the way to the early Forza entries, when me and the boys would take shifts every 30 minutes on the Maple Valley Endurance to get that next 250K lick. It’s been imbedded in me at such a young age to run long races, so naturally when I see a 25+ lap race, my eyes light up. Great video, you’ve REALLY been hanging them out lately!

I remember that one time I had a really exciting endurance race in GT5. It was the Roadster endurance at Tsukuba and I remember having an AI drive right behind me for hours on end, sometimes even overtaking me with positions swapping every once in a while by either an overtake or strategy, until late into the race it pitted while I was able to go until the end. It almost caught up to me with brand new tires, but I was able to just edge it over the line. It was a strategic and exciting battle and probably the peak moment of any endurance race I've ever driven in Gran Turismo.

Having just become a fan of WEC, it really does suck that GT is so uninterested in actually including true endurance.
GT is one of the biggest reasons I even got into endurance. Watching different classes of cars running around the field is such a treat, and in the past I have enjoyed a few endurance races in GT history. And the ones I tended to gravitate towards were what one would call the tip of the iceberg, with my favorite GT2 race being the hour-long 30 laps of Trial Mountain.
A lot of me wants to one day do a full 24 hour run. A lot of me wants to race all the time. But apart from the online races GT7 officially holds, which I do compete in, it's hard to really find the motivation to plug in my G923 and do single player content when the content just doesn't interest me as much as online races do. And at my rank(which I will admit now is D), the online races are rather short, at about 30 minutes. I can't get my fix because Polyphony doesn't provide it, and I'm not good enough at GT7 online to where I can handle higher league races because it was never really facilitated for players like me to do them.

The video gets to the point at 46:14 , and yeah I agree, in GT races don't have enough variables to make endurance racing exciting. The appeal for endurance racing in real life is that so many things could go wrong during a 24h race, I can only imagine how much of an adventure it must feel like for a team to head into it not knowing how far they'll get. Their car could very well get left behind at the beginning but then catch up with others as they run into mechanical issues or accidents. But in GT, after a couple of laps you already know for certain whether or not you'll win the race, and anything afterward is a repeat of the same first few laps and first pit stop.

Not necessarily, GT4 allowed a huge variety in what you could do and also in what could happen in the race - thanks in part to some shoddy AI, but still...
For example beating the "Formula Gran Turismo" cars with a Group C sportscar could be achieved one of several ways, but generally not on pace at several tracks. You had to qualify on softs, then if you raced on Hard/Super Hard tyres they would leave you for dead, but stop 2.2 times to your once - so you had to keep with them as much as possible on worse tyres, with slow warm-up, while they zipped around on softs, but stopping more often. Same could be done with small cars like the Suzuki GSXR/4 with low weight and Med tyres you still could stop less than some of the SuperGT or other opponents in the enduro races - or you could go the opposite way and try to go head- to- head from pole, keeping cats behind while you go flat- out, but then if they punted you off or you spun, whole strategic rethink needed.
Just like real endurance racing, all is not lost by the first stops - provided you buy the right type of tyres.

I never see channels mention this, but on GT5 B-spec races at launch, it wasn't just that you couldn't save. No, you couldn't even pause the game, but had to do the full 24 hrs in one setting, with ""pauses"" only possible if you left the AI driver to its own devices, which meant that after a short while it started to drive erratic and either burned tires or drove way too slow.
It was utter insane, I can't come to grips with what they were thinking shipping the game and expect normal people be okay with that gameplay.

It's an unfortunate trend with Polyphony, especially from GT5 onwards. Being able to do things, but just choosing not to. They had the ability to make the best endurance races in the series in GT6 and could in GT7...but didn't and don't. It's exactly the same with your video on GT7's AI, they have the ability to make the best AI races in the series by far even without Sophy but don't.
I enjoyed a couple of the 1 hour "Human Comedy" events (before subsequent updates broke the pp system and now you have to google setups to make some of them even possible) especially the 550pp tuned cars event at Koyoto, and also some of the money grind events in the world circuits can be fun if you go out of your way to restrict your own performance to make them balanced. However, Polyphony gave them all the braidead AI and haven't added any actual events more than 2 or 3 laps in a year and a half so yeah, there's a lot of room for improvement that I'm not sure will ever come at this point.

In the REALLY early interviews with Kaz about GT2 in it's early development he states that Inspiration for GT was because he was longing(HUNGRY) to become a Race Car Driver IRL but that was nearly impossible in Japan so making the Simulation as realistic as he could was the Closest he thought he would ever get to real racing but now after getting to Race and WIN IRL I think he isn't that kind of HUNGRY anymore and is more just enjoying the warm memories and I think GT7 with it's laid back Cafe settings and car museum show rooms reflects that pretty accurately

I remember doing the endurance races in GT1 back when I was a kid. I certainly wasn't as good a driver as I am now, so they were actually quite thrilling for me. Felt like I was just one tiny mistake away from losing the whole time. From there, I missed out on everything until GT5, and I remember the restrictions being rather weak, bringing the best car I could, and then being let down at how slow the AI were, that I could just cruise around Tsukuba for hours just one or two laps ahead to really make the fuel and tires last and avoid mistakes. When GT6 dialed it back to just 24 minutes, yeah, it's not much time, but the AI were more challenging, especially at Daytona. Human Comedy felt like a checklist, but the Maggiore race actually did kinda feel unfair at first, just b/c I had no reason to expect the AI to be so fast when they were always terrible before. It felt like a cheap trick to force me to invest more time at first, but was lots of fun when I eventually beat it. If the AI could have just been that hard with most of the events, especially considering there is a difficulty setting anyway (which feels broken), then it would have been a much more enjoyable experience.

The most "weird" thing about endurance races in GT (I do not remember which one, but it was for sure one of the first 4 version) is that in one of the mentioned version, I found that with a perfect balanced car set up, once ALL the tires became "red" (depleted), I would have been faster than the new ones for a bunch of laps, before degrading actually to zero and starting to loose time. I think it was in GT4 (the first one with B-spec races???) because I remember that the CPU driver will go back into the Pit-lane by itself as soon it reached the first hint of "red-depleted tires" status, but if manually driven by me I could run "some more laps" at a better pace, then get in advance the pit-stop time spent in the pit-lane, netting an overal race time alike I never had a stop (huuuuuge advantages: I had entire dozen of laps lead by the end of the most longer endurances)

One idea that could be used for endurance races with pit stops is to allow saving checkpoints during your pit session.

I've inhaled several tons of copium and ended up creating some of these endurance races with the custom race feature. If the payout of them was fairer, I'd struggle to find a fault, apart from the obvious lack of a save feature and the limited grid number. The feeling of completion is also missing because of all this, which just kills the ethusiasm for me.

While not exactly endurance, you could have mentioned the Formula Gran Turismo World Championship in GT4, which is possibly the longest event by far, with opponents being the Gran Turismo Formula, and being not just long, but also the toughest event in the game, or even series, by a great margin!

The 1999 Le Mans 24hr game actually had the Le Mans 24hr in game, so you could do a 24hr race that early! It was ported to PS2 in 2001 and remade for PC in 2002. Yet, quite impressive.

When I started my GT4 playthrough, the first thing on my mind was how I was going to complete the 24 hour races as I did every race on A-Spec, so I had to use the PCSX2 emulator to save mid game with save states, then resume after each session because there was no way that I can do it in one go due to my busy real life commitments. It took me about 6 days for each 24h race, 4 hours each session.
The Nurburgring 24h was the race I didn't bother using an equal car to the AI so I wanted to go for a lap record to see how many I can do. The other 2 Le Mans races I tried to spice up the race by slowing down and crashing on purpose to give them a chance.
About 9 months was spent doing the playthrough and I was relieved when finishing the last endurance race as I got 100% completion.
Recording the 12 hour videos for 2 parts took a whole day to upload due to the file size and Full HD quality, more than 200GB each video. No chance I'd do that again.

ngl, back in 2006, the first time i was unlocked the endurance events in GT4, i was speechless & sit down for a moment, thinking on how do i gonna complete the 24h events. At that time, i didn't know how to use the B-spec, and months later after that, I was find out that the B-spec can be fast forward.
But then again, no other games ever tried to make such a very long race at that time. Which is for me, GT4 will always the most memorable game for me.

I loved the endurance races on 4-5. It has been so long since i played 1-2-3 i cant remember but the fact that 2 years on and we still havent got proper endurance races on 7 is a joke. Even the online races could be doubled in length sometimes hate 4-5 lap sprints tho i know im probably in the minority anyway love the video keep up the great work

One of my biggest laments about the GT franchise is that it never really brought back or expanded its formula 1 catalogue, or even open wheelers in general :( No CART, no indy, etc. Only recently did we start getting maybe 1 or 2 from other categories, but damn it was a loooooooong drought.

Agree. It would have been nice if they made a 2023/2024 spec Formula Gran Turismo inspired by 2023/2024 F1 regulations. So far their Super Formula open wheelers are so scarce, not even a full championship

Funny how many comments here mention the mid race saving function because they don't have time, and not because having the console running for 24h straight would burn it to the ground (or at least corrupt the save file entirely)

I've never played GT, but the most endurance I had to put out was doing custom races in NFS SHIFT on the Nordschleiffe and just setting it to 20 laps. It got you basically 400kms of driving, and doing it in something with only mild engine tuning but some decent handling (my pick was the Hakosuka, it had a cool livery) meant it took you quite a while to complete it.
And there was no way to save or anything so you basically had to just do it in one go :D

I have a cool idea for Gran Turismo. Make a championship consisting of 10 races, each 2.4 hours. In total they sum up to 24 hours. So they can call it the 24 series. In each race you also have to drive different classes, and in each race, time is accelated to 10x. Playing 24h hours alone in single player surely isn't too fun, i guess.

Me and a couple of mates set up a custom race: 9 hours of the Nurburgring endurance layout in GR3 cars and with full weather and damage set up. Was honestly one of the best times I’ve ever had on a game and would definitely recommend getting a couple of mates round and doing an endurance race together

In Gran Turismo 4, I thought I'd easily win the Nurburgring 24 Hours by entering a tuned up Superbird and having the B-spec driver take care of the whole thing. Sure enough, the driver took off like a rocket and established a giant lead. I left the room to go on with my day.
I came back a few hours later, only to find that the B-spec driver was now several minutes behind the leader! It turned out that the B-spec driver was very bad at figuring out pit stop timing on such a long track, and was constantly running out of gas.

My passion for racing and cars in general started with my neighbours copy of GT3 and 4. I'd come over on weekends and even though he was 8 years older we bonded over the game. I'd take shifts with more of his friends in endurance races. For the daytona 24h, Le Mans 24 and Nurburg 24, we'd all meet up and play some GT alongside the real race.
I later bonded with my best friend playing GT5 when it came out and I got myself a PS3 and GT5. Funnily enough, GT5 was my last GT. I got a PC instead of getting a PS4 in Dec 2012 and well I never looked back. I now play with a full sim rig and triple monitors. Am sad that GT haven't gone back to its origins, atleast for me.

GT4 doesn't let you do 24 hour races in 8 hours with 3x mode unless you literally sit there and babysit *every* pit.
The reason is that, upon every pit, it exits the overview mode and puts you back into real-time mode.
You then have to reset it to 3x and go back to what you were doing.
