Aye, we are very much in control of our response to sensory input, if we choose to be.
Choosing kindness and impartiality over being right and taking sides feels like peace is retained.
Also identifying our own reactions like anger or despair, without judging or identifying with them.

A few of my favorite Seneca's quotes.
"We suffer more often in imagination than in reality."
"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."
"The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune's control and abandoning what lies in yours."
"Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body."
"True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future."
    Keep living the Stoic path.
Stay Wise. Stay Mindful. Stay Stoic.

So being born in rich family is luck?
What about being born in poverty?
Being born in earth is no differ than hell because you sold your soul to the devil because you trade your precious hour to the corporates.
      Pay bills till you die.

I have applied Seneca’s thoughts to my life for more than a year and my ability to be unperturbed is astonishing. I have PTSD from the military and going to war, from being attacked at 14 leaving me with a metal plate in my cheek - I was a raging person who was so defensive and I didn’t want to be hurt by anyone.
So what has changed? Well a lot.
I’ve had some really difficult times in these past 4 months, moving back to the United States from Italy, being separated from my family as we were held up by Lufthansa over 5 cm and list $4000 between two tickets and my dogs ticket. I didn’t raise my voice once. It took a week to get back home. This stuff works.
I no longer care what people think, I know what it comes down to is my perspective - that’s their problem they don’t like me. It is so freeing.
I like me and what I am doing feels right to me. I feel more centered and confident.

I agree with what is being said in this video. However, it's very easy to fall into not having boundaries for yourself. Just because an insult shouldn't/doesn't bother you, does not mean people should feel comfortable saying these things to you. I think it's still important to stand your ground and tell them it's not okay to speak to you that way.

    • @howeworth
      @howeworth Рік тому +21

If you tell them, you show them that you care about their opinion. You can stand your ground more firmly by not reacting to their insult. They might try to insult you more, but if you don't react, they will eventually stop.

@@howeworth It seems you’ve never worked at a bar lol. Letting someone crash and ruin your birthday party seems very stoic, but unless you’re the only one at your birthday party, they’re ruining everyone else’s night too. Some situations call for the correct application of righteous anger. Of course, you could also reach out to the person who’s trying to hurt you and try to help them become a better version of themselves. But some people can be very hard to reach.

For some time now, I have been contemplating the characteristics of a person who is very inspiring to me. His charm, wisdom, and strangeness in the face of the difficulty of this life made me see him as a real, crazy Superman.
One of his most important qualities that I remembered at the time was how when all the wills gathered against him, he treated danger and judgments with a strange compassion. This made me draw inspiration from him for this inner conviction and flexibility, especially when my life became filled with emotional reactions.

In my mind I know what is right and what is wrong, but if people do not see things as I do, then I’ll just let it be. This is talking about 20 years ago. Let me say that, if people still want to live, they will find ways to do so, by letting go nightmares or terrible memories. I think this is a kind of undefeatable.
Now, what is right or wrong seems not important to me anymore. What I care is someone I love. I still love him. However, we do not have any chance to meet up to now, and looks like a lot of difficulties ahead. I treasure this relationship❤️,hoping that we’ll be together.

I'm of similar stature, and when (at work) dealing with similar height customers, I'd refer to us being 'close to the ground'- there's more oxygen down here... If it's a male customer, with a taller cohort, I'd quote Sandi Toksvig (1.52m) - who packs in a whole lot of wit, talent and intellect into such a diminutive stature. Sandi, in an episode of QI cited a study which showed shorter people to be better for the environment, consuming less material things, needing less fuel to run our bodies, and excellent at hill climbing..... Big people are expensive to run!!

To uncover the shadow working on me. When I catch It, It’s a moment of epiphany!! But in my case, It requieres constantly journaling to find that unhealthy patterns, time for reflection, great determination, and have an open mind that I can be wrong… the shadow is cunning. “Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. As of my own experience, these statements are 100 percent benificial. We are either surrounded by envious people or not to do anything. So one way or another we are being hurted, but to stay undefeated and enjoy our lives among people hate us for no reason, patience is by far the most powerful answer to smash them so hardly that it can make a complete chaos in their minds. To argue how I learned the power of patience, it comes from my mistake when I attacked a person wordly, but he answered me with a huge patience. The power of his patience was out of my imagination, which I beared for a long time with shame and regret.

@NewLife-qj9mx, 😂 That's so funny! Good answer. I think really tall people must get tired of the "How's the air up there?" People have a tendency, it seems, to believe that their reality is the normal one. For instance, I'm retired, and don't need to stick to any strict bedtime. I returned a text to my niece at 11:30 pm, and the answer I got the next day, was, "What were you doing up so late?" and I thought, you, niece, go to bed EARLY. I understand why, of course. I had to get up at 5am for all the years I was working. I now love the luxury of sleeping late in the morning. I wouldn't be saying to her, "Why are you going to bed so EARLY?"

Death is not a friend, nor is it enemy. It's a decoration like christmas or halloween that appears once in a human's season. The fact that it doesn't appear for everyone all at once makes it a path to be travelled by one. To expect it is to watch aeroplanes in the sky and know they will land - the indifference of gravity. Everything else is just air, hot or cold.

I agree with stoicism's point regarding to injurys and insults, however, when it comes to physical assaults, I think it's important to differenciate between situations in which you can't defend yourself physically (because the opponent is stronger, has weapons.. etc), and situations in which it would be not only neccessary to defend yourself but also mandatory to prevent your body from taking prolonged harm. I think it is a bit naive and counter-intuitive to just sit there actionless and let your body get harmed in a bad way. It is dependent on the situation though. To be clear: I do like stoicism and find it to be a very helpful philosophy, but I cannot agree to the point, that all physical harm can be repelled by emotional invincibility

    • @traductus3337
      @traductus3337 Рік тому

I think, in terms of physical harm, i understand it like that: You argue with someone and the other turns to physical violence, since he can not fight you with words, he trys to invalidate you and your words with the strengh of hes body. There is no need for you to turn to physical violence by your self to strenghen your point, you already won the argument anyways.
How i understand you, i see it like the following: A Stoic, will not try fight a lion with words, if the lion only wants to eat hes pray, neighter i think will the stoic accept to get eaten, without trying to save hes live. The same goes for humans, with the sole reasion to hurt or kill you, the stoic will still try to defend himself, but he accepts the fact that all they want is to hurt or kill.

I was being harassed by a neighbor who's a young girl 23. She was continually telling me that I was racist simultaneously I was also culturate inappropriate. She would come by my house everyday out of her way to harass me and call me a racist. This was March of 2020. After a weeks of this it was wearing me down so I wanted to confront her about it, I stood up and she ended up assaulting me where another neighbor saw this and called the police because she was afraid for her kids on both of us. It was it was extra hard for me because I was friends with her grandmother and her mother from the 80s. Is this all just some crappy life test like paying playing The Sims and having people throw whatever they can at you just to see if you can keep your cool?

I was distressed at first that normally upsetting things left me unperturbed, thinking that I was now incapable of emotion. The truth is that I am better able to access the nuances of a moment in time rather than be swept away by unchecked reaction and doubt.

My stoicism was put on a very harsh test by the betrayal and attempted abuse with the goal to kill me of a men who I saw back then as a friend I also contributed to the problem by reading unstoic books which triggered my misunderstanding - which led catastropic outcome by eradicating the healthy distance to the event. By that plunged into passions. Although there was a totally different another underlying issue fostering it all, which also was based on passion, but of a very different type.
The betrayal also decovered my own impairment in judging correctly this person. Being betrayed adds an additional layer to the issue if it is a stranger the connection due which pain is transfered is weak. It took some time for me to see the difference between myself and betrayer. Because as a supposed friend I loved him with all my heart. So being threatened by immediate death shocked me so deep that I couldn't move for a moment, in addition to the reflex to crush him to survive a deep sadness be fell my heart, it seemed so pointless that he threw away this friendship in an blink of an eye.

Last week my father had a stroke. My mother managed to keep her worry at bay in order to protect my sister and I. My sister cried to the point that she couldn't speak anymore.
Strangely, I felt alright. My father was alright in the end, but for a moment, we weren't sure he would make it. Yet I felt ready to accept any outcome.
I'm unsure how this happened. As an anxious person, I often thought about the inevitable day I would loose my parents. I cried myself to sleep sometimes, dreading it.
Is it possible that anxiety helped me grieve in advance for this moment ?

I think some level of indefeatable is worth going for. At least more even keeled. But there are always limits. This is esp. in the level of trauma, as we currently witness the wars, fatigue going around the world. And this is a brain and nervous system thing (e.g. PTSD). The other aspect to consider, is community support. (Women are actually much better at this.). And from Christianity, the aspect of "love".

I have a question. Maybe I didn't fully catch the context, but I'm curious about why "she/her" is used for negative situations, such as:
"She does feel misfortune such as losing loved ones. She may shed a tear or two."
But for positive or ideal actions, it changes to "he/him," as in:
"Trivial misfortunes the sage doesn't even feel. At most, he laughs at them."
Could you explain the context behind this choice?

It hurts those that do not like a person . To tell the enemies " I dont care" means to them that you have no care for them. It weakens them . They obviously think they are cared about by those they attack . But it is a shock to them to know that there is no care for them.
