    This is just a general comment regarding all road tripping videos presented on Out of Spec channels. If we could periodically get a map displayed showing a line with trip progression - that would really help in visualizing progress. Perhaps a clock also. Of course, this may prove tougher in editing than I might know, but it would really help in getting a sense of situation.

      2022 chevy bolt 55k miles. On Thanksgiving at 11pm we left phoenix and arrived in Albuquerque at 1pm. 14 hours is more impressive knowing that google maps says 6.5 hours. 5 charges, all going to 80 percent. EA. Peoria, anthem, sedona, winslow, and gallop. We were going uphill, we were running against the wind, 15 degrees from sedona on, and a pretty heavy car. 2 adults, 2 kids, with plenty of gear, not much room left for anything else. I kept the cabin at about 68 degrees. Super miserable. I will preach to the ceiling, everyone should have a small ev that they charge at home as a city roamer in addition to a truck, minivan, or big SUV for traveling. Do not roadtrip EVs. It's fun at first, but loses it's "charm" very fast.

      @@aerostorm_ If you drive so fast that you're automatically going to jail if scanned by a cop, you need secondary support. In an EV, average speed is sth like 71mph including stops. In an ICE, it's 112mph. Those guys travel as fast as the car will go, over 150mph whenever possible. With auxiliary tanks and assisted gas stops with two pumps and whatnot. Sub 40 hours in an EV is massive. But the ICE record is 25h 39min. Almost 14 hours faster. You'd be mad if you did that unassisted.

    • @Cyrribrae
      @Cyrribrae Місяць тому +4

      It's also a push for less expensive battery chemistry with less cobalt. Porsche still does NMC better than most. But still, I'm not a battery engineer, but I imagine there are downsides to LFP in some ways. That said it's not like the model 3 ended up doing much worse than the taycan in the surge. The other manufacturers can do better, but batteries aren't easy to redesign and spin up at a moment

    • @NO_OPEC_NO_PROBLEM
      @NO_OPEC_NO_PROBLEM Місяць тому +7

      Battery chemistry is more exotic in the Porsche and much more expensive. Would probably add 10-20K to your regular EV.

    • @Jeroenneman
      @Jeroenneman Місяць тому

      Depends on what other manufacturers you're calling out. Tesla? Because they're still selling with their 400V architecture. Chinese models are already nearing 500kW peak charging curves.
      Reminder that Porsche had to recall every single Taycan sold, due to issues with the high voltage battery, because a short circuit might lead to fire. I'd rather not drive a car that Porsche doesn't properly test before putting it out on the road.

    • @addickland5656
      @addickland5656 Місяць тому +2

      Not being snarky, because I absolutely love the Taycan both as a car and an EV benchmark, but is Porsche coming anywhere close to turning a profit on this thing on a per unit basis, even without taking R&D into account? Because that does kinda matter. Both Rivian and Lucid make cars that are in many ways better than Teslas, but unless I'm mistaken, they lose money on every one they make right? Correct me if that has changed. If it's the same with the Taycan, then great charging or no it's still just a tech demonstrator whose platform and advances won't be adopted by other carmakers until being more affordable.

    Great job guys, enjoyed watching. Unbelievable you all broke that record, lots of credit goes to you and maybe even EA for having a charging network that has improved enough to allow you to break the record. As it still has more improvment EA is getting better. They really just need to add more chargers and keep up the current maintainance (or a bit better). Place like St George need more chargers (updated and more stations). Great move to skip to Mesquite that is the same thing we do when going from SLC to Vegas. Very awesome you all can stay up and skip bathroom breaks. Congrats.

      I know the latest Tesla model 3 would lose judging from the I-90 surge, but since as they said this trip had plenty of (relatively) sub-optimal charging sessions due to outside factors, I do wonder how close to 40 hours that car would get considering how much it beat the model S by in the surge. Maybe even barely crack it at say 39 hours 59 minutes? Anyway, no doubt they will do another NY to LA run with a Tesla when those V4 superchargers start getting rolled out and either the S, 3 or upcoming refreshed Y become compatible with them. Will be great fun to see how that system will stack up compared to the Taycan.

      @addickland5656 Місяць тому +1

      @@markrichards9792 Is that confirmed by Tesla even for upcoming refreshed models? For sure I don't expect the current line-up to charge faster at a V4, but if Tesla can get 500 kw through a cable out of a V4 cabinet into a cybertruck then I would be highly surprised if they didn't update the charging ability of the S, X, 3, and Y next time any one of those gets a refresh, to something like 300 or even 400 kw, depending on what Tesla decides the new car version can handle.
      I was always under the impression that even if the current cars could take more juice (which yes, you're right, they can't), that the current V3 superchargers max out not much above 250 kw anyway. Was that incorrect knowledge on my part?

    Honestly even beyond the Taycan just being an amazing (if yes, still expensive) car in it's own right, EV or ICE, and giving us all a preview of what EV charging curves and speeds hopefully will look like in a few short years among a whole bunch more affordable cars, can we also all agree how nice it is for the Tesla supercharging network to FINALLY have some actual competiion? That system was so far ahead of anyone else that you'd be fool to buy any other car if you wanted to do a lot of roadtrips with it. Now, at long, long last, Tesla has an incentive to improve their network again. Let's just say I don't think the recent V4 announcement is entirely accidental....

    • @lolfreakwaca4328

      I mean if every charger across the Us was V3 and the supercharger network wasn't opening up to other car manufacturers Tesla probably would be fine, even with V3 ....the V4 announcement is probably mainly because other manufacturers are pressuring Tesla into it with for example Hyundai launching Nacs soon.... Hyundai couldn't do that with V3 Superchargers, so in theory Tesla needs to Build out V4 Superchargers pretty quickly!!

    The range, charging, and curve is amazing in this car, but what will be great is when all those things are available in a car that normal people can afford.

      The Model 3 came in 2nd place after the Taycan in the I-90 Surge, and is 35k or less in some places. We’re there already.

    • @davidmenasco5743
      @davidmenasco5743 Місяць тому

      As noted, the Model 3 is already in a comparable range for road trip performance, and is well below the average price of new cars.
      And the huge new development is that the same is now also true of the Hyundai Ioniq 6. So the competition is heating up - at long last.
      As for cars that normal people can afford? Well, there are much larger forces at play in that regard. The American middle class has been shrinking since the Reagan era, and the rate of this shrinking is about to accelerate like a Plaid. So if you're a normal person, good luck affording anything in 2030.

    First of all, great video. That said, I know it's extra work, but I wish this video would have included the route and the stops you decided to use. Similar to what the Ioniq Guy did on his I90 Surge standalone video.
    For example, which route did you take out of NYC? I-78 to I-80? And where was the switch -- 24>287>80? Then 80 to I-90 someplace where?
    And this race should really start by the GW Bridge. That way you can get I-80 straight and no midtown traffic. Just start from the bus terminal on the Manhattan side at 178th Street.

    Congrats on breaking the record in the updated Taycan. She’s such a beauty, does she sit much lower than the other coupe/sedan EVs?
    Any chance of making individual videos of each vehicle’s journey from the original 90 Cannonball? Staying with each vehicle from start to finish since y’all already had so much filmed?

    Makes sense for EA and other CPOs to whack in as many chargers as possible with some balancing and max out the grid connection, then try and get more power to the site or use a buffer battery to deal with the balancing issues at sites that need them. More plugs with balancing is better than a couple of plugs with speeds that most wont hit anytime soon.

    It's incredible how far the charging infrastructure has come in just the last couple of years. The team only had 1-2 station issues and most of that was related to power sharing. Whats up with that Ioniq 6 convention at EA?

    This really underscores how the next stage of EVs will be when there are good chargers at every exit, and the route planners are good enough to get max performance for that individual car with the infrastructure.
