I am 100% in on Talking Heads! Love Tom Tom Club as well
Talking Heads reissues from Rhino cut by Kevin Gray and Chris Bellman are all analog. I talked to both of them for my channel and they confirmed this. Same with the Kevin Gray Black Sabbath Paranoid, it's all analog even though the hype sticker doesn't have the explicit verbiage like later Rhino reissues had.
He followed up the all analog comment with "I dont think they were from the master tapes". I think thats what Mike is specifically talking about. All analog, cut from the master.
@@shanerjedi1138 where and which video?
The Devo has so gone under the radar with all the Sabbath controversy. It's unbelievable, I've listened to it more than I ever listened to the original.
Hi Mike, thanks for the upload. I hope your hanging in there.
New Order Hifi’s would be amazing. Also my favorite band.
Bought the Devo one and buying it from a US store and shipping it across the pond/north sea resulted in additional fees, customs and tax. Very expensive record for me but I do like Devo. Very happy with it!
New Order. Zeppelin, Joy Division and Talking Heads….yes please….
I feel like each title they release gets more eyes on the Series and get bigger/better titles
Get the shipping, CS and roll-outs in order and they will be off to the races
I agree with all of those…especially Joy Division
My friend at Rock City Music in Detroit was telling me MANY of the same complaints you mentioned when dealing with big companies like Rhino.
The Yes “Relayer” sounds magnificent!
Freedom of Choice has been on my want list for years. This was the perfect opportunity to pick it up. Thanks!
Very informative video, Mike. Thanks. 🙏
As someone who worked in the industry from the ‘80’s onward, this video just further demonstrates how far we are from the days when the major labels would dominate with their P&D deals with smaller labels, although pretty large themselves.
As a Devo fan from the late 70's, ie: basically from when they started, I just ordered 'Freedom Of Choice', after hearing what you said about it. I have an Australian pressing (I hail from Oz) and it does sound great but super excited about this one. Thanks mate!
PS: Just hope it gets across the Pacific in one piece!🤔
PS: 3 weeks later.....the LP arrived in perfect condition, packaging was excellent. Haven't played it yet though.
It's a great time to be a record collector
It's an expensive time to be a record collector 😊but yes we are living in the golden age of record reissue!
Many thanks Mike, this should stir the pot up nicely✌️😁
Great review your right on the amount purchased better packaging and your packaging is always Amazing! Thank You
Agree with you about the artist's intent BS. A few years later, Verlaine made an excellent instrumental album for Ryko (reissued on vinyl) that had a better guitar tone. And his partner recently adjusted it for a fantastic vinyl release.
I agree with you on buying from a huge company like Rhino!! I cross my fingers every time I have ordered from them Customer service is nonexistent!! Just bought the Coltrane Rhino from you! Hopefully you will get more of the Rhino releases!
Completely agree Mike, the Devo re rivals the sonic quality of any of the other 13 in the series so far. Talking Heads and/or New Order would be the two I would LOVE to see in this series.
I have both Cars, Van Morrison, and Black Sabbath. Surprisingly the Van Morrison is a stand out, it’s fantastic!
Mike, we share the same passion in our business. Continuous rounds checking everything, no single aspect too small to check on. Some days it’s hard to be in three places at a time!
great segment Mike. ⏺ i was lucky to get copy # 3473 of "Marque Moon" & it sold out soon thereafter. It is one of the few albums that I have on CD that I desired to own on vinyl; overall, for the price, I feel that Rhino did an EXCELLENT job on this particular LP. I have no real desire to own any of the previous albums in the Rhino Hifi series but am curious to see what they do in the future--
It was probably Richard Lloyd who said that about Marquee Moon's sound. I saw an interview with him in which he said he was disappointed that that they had Andy Johns engineering it, but Tom Verlaine rejected a big Zeppelin drum sound.
I really want to hear the Rhino version of Marquee Moon, but I can't justify buying another copy of an album I already love my copy of. I love the bright sound of the original Sterling cut. But that doesn't mean I could only love it in that presentation.
Maybe I will get the Freedom Of Choice since I have no copy of that album (despite loving many songs on it).
I like you comment - " I walk the floor, Daily" That is the sign of a great leader, manager!
Any chance you might do a review of the major record plants? You could go in depth which make the most quiet pressings and which have the best QC.
I haven't had much experience with Sony Japan pressings, granted I have some modern Japanese pressings that I'm not sure where they were pressed. The quietest records I have are from QRP, but I'd put RTI and some recent Optimal boutique pressings in a tie for second place.
Yes, this is my favorite series right now too. I am very glad they aren't doing gimmicky things like color vinyl. An interesting thing happened with orders of American Beauty and Candy-O. Orders from Warner Music in Canada and Australia got sent unnumbered copies and it just said "Limited Edition", not Limited Edition of 5000". So I can only assume they are planning on selling more of these beyond the 5000.
I've ordered 5 of them and all been in good shape so far. Alot better from what I heard it was. Only issue I had order one which was instock but was told two days later is wasnt but they send me the greatful dead one for free so the customer service really does go beyond if they mess up
This was great Mike. My biggest frustration which you also mentioned here, is the dinged LP corners and insufficient cardboard LP mailers. Likewise, I have stopped ordering from them after the release of “Candy-O” per the ongoing possibility of USPS transit damage that can occur to the LP cover.
Mike, I am really digging your new video “style”. Nice room & lighting. More importantly I am enjoying your delivery of the content. I prefer the “colloquial” delivery more than the ranting & screaming. If you could only get rid of the ads which interrupt your flow… 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great review of the RHF series! I have 12 of them, passing on Ole Coltrane and the Ornette Coleman. I'm not the biggest Jazz fan, but I did buy Tutu and that is a killer sounding Jazz record. I have the Jaco and Herbie Hancock titles but they hardly leave the jackets. The Cars is not the only double title release as there are 2 Coltrane titles. I think we should know what's coming next by July 12 or 19, supposedly 2 rock titles that celebrate their 50th.
I have enjoyed them. I have the Devo, Coltrane Ole, Davis Tutu, Cars, Cars Candy-0, and Doobie Bros. I would have purchased the Herbie Hancock but I have that on Speakers Corner.
I agree with you on New Order and you can add The Smiths to that list. But I do think the reissue of Substance that came our recently is really good. I have the color variant and it sounds great but I have heard the standard black does not sound as good.
Too bad that these are impossible to get from retailers in Europe.
toooo bad indeed
Ive got all the rock releases since day 1 and just one Jazz - Herbie. I love the series.
Mike, do yourself a favor and open that Van Morrison LP and throw it on your turntable. The album is fantastic, very upbeat and lively, and the Rhino is marvelous.
I ordered the Television record. It showed up with a perfect cover, but severely damaged unplayable vinyl. They're customer service was great and sent a new copy with perfect vinyl, and again, a perfect cover. I`ll probably frame the first one, I guess.
Had to laugh 😅 regarding your love for Doobie Bros, Van Morrison, Grateful Dead and Zappa. We must be brothers from a different mother lol. I’m no fan of any of them either and I have tried, really tried.
Buying online isn’t difficult. Not an issue for me. I hardly ever buy audiophile records at my local record stores. The local stores mostly don’t carry them and the ones they do carry are jacked up to ridiculous prices
Just for the sake of clarity, I believe that Tutu was a digitally recorded album. Every reference I've found indicates as much. That's no big deal to my mind however some don't want any chocolate getting in their peanut butter. So buyer beware, at least one of these Rhino titles is not all analog.
Most of the folks pulling knives to defend their high-value OGs never took the time to check out the remastered version. I agree with your comments on Sabbath and Television. And you’re right, their shipping is something else…. 🤦
Greetings from Cologne. 2 things. One report, one question. 1. I did risk it and did order a Deco Rhino Hi-Fidelity from the Rhino-website. I am very happy to report that the record did arrive fine and undamaged. The single record-packaging seemed very sturdy so no complaints here. No idea what Rhino is doing for domestic shipping?
2. The Question: Rhino did ship this for USD 15 so all in all it does render all local or European offers on ebay or Discogs an act of pure highway robbery. So the question is what shipping rate can the 'In' Groove offer for shipping to Europe/Germany? Kind regards, cheers Uli
Hey Mike, why don't you call those geniuses over at Rhino and show them how to properly package an audiophile LP for shipping. Doesn't seem like brain surgery, but clearly they could use some guidance.
My first copy of the Jaco Pastorius had non-fill throughout side one, and I sent it back to Rhino for a replacement. The replacement has non-fill also. I'm not trying again as it's probably on most of the pressings. Luckily, my other Rhino purchases (Black Sabbath, Television, and Ornette Coleman) were perfect. I also picked up the Miles Davis at a Barnes And Noble, but I haven't listened to that one yet.
I managed to get undamaged copies of Black Sabbath and 20th Century Lindsey (Buckingham) box set sent to the UK. Maybe I got lucky.
Crossings and Captain and Me were both surpsingly better, in terms of mastering/SQ, in the Speakers Corner releases, compared to the Rhino High Fidelity ones. Both mastered by Kevin Gray! Still, I have every one of these and will keep buying them.
Rhino is doing a good job at a fair price. Just bought The Cars releases so far and will get the rest as they come. Wish someone would take a shot at UFO, Uriah Heep and Camel. My only gripe is the pseudo obis. I gave up keeping them in place.
The Warner catalog is so deep, and Talking Heads is super-realistic. Fingers crossed.
We, the Jazz lovers, have Blue Note (Tone Poet), Verve Acoustic Sounds and Analogue Productions (our friend Chad Kassen) labels. Rhino has a big problem: only you can buy the vinyls in your web. An error.
Awesome to see they did Crossings.
Actually, the Rhino copy is very good, but the Speaker's Corner version is outstanding. If you can only grab one copy, I think you'd be happier with the SC version. Either way, I'm with you; it's a great record.
Absolutely. I was rather surprised how much better Crossing was on Speakers Corner. Also mastered by Kevin Grey! Strange.
How do they compare to the Original?
Rhino doing hi fi records reminds me of when a company makes something everyone loves and then Apple makes a version and because it’s easier for them everyone ends up buying through them and killing the original company(ies) that the idea was originally supporting. So now acoustic sounds mobile fidelity etc, will have the majority of the market funneled into Rhinos market now even if it just comes down to cost because rhino doesn’t have to ask or pay themself anything to make it happen, and it’s actually surprising they didn’t catch on until now. *edit: I’m guessing the reason we are being graced now with rock hi fi records is because Rhino doesn’t exactly have the deepest jazz catalogue so we are all being made aware of how we are suddenly realizing how much we’d love to have all of rhinos bands on hi fi reissues
I've already spent 140 on ebay for the Black Sabbath S/T record. I went ahead and bought the Cars Candy O record from the website for at msrp. For some reason the Cars S/T record is going for significantly more than Sabbath on ebay so I have not pulled the trigger on that one yet but I love that record so I will very soon because I know its only going UP up up....
Thanks for the heads up on the Devo release Mike being so limited I was able to order a copy with very reasonable postage costs to Brisbane Australia
How much was postage? I'm on the sunny coast
@@crazyprayingmantis5596 $16 usd for postage
All up for record and postage $83 AUD which compared with other albums I’ve bought from overseas of this calibre quite reasonable
I hope these titles are available for purchase in the UK as postage costs are too expensive for majority for UK record buyers even with In Groove shipping costs.
Nice!..... A Rick Turner guitar... You're obviously not a beginner. That, or you just like it as an expensive ornament LOL
I got the Black Sabbath on vinyl all the way here to Norway
Hi Mike is this your new house? Have you brought all your records and Hi Fi over yet and will you be doing a room tour
The Ornette is fantastic. Along with the ORG 45rpm titles, it's an easy win if you like Ornette.
Have you even seen the movie ‘Proof of Life’ Mike? The amazing ending song in that movie is on that Van Morrison you haven’t wanted to open yet. Spin it 👍
Hey Mike. How come you are not carrying the new Three Blind Mice reissues with Bernie Grundman mastering from Sony Japan?
So if I buy one of these from you, there's a chance it's a damaged copy that you didn't want?
Is there any chance Rhino will do a 2nd run of Black Sabbath?
There's 5,000 more on their website now. Unnumbered. Not sure how long they have been on there. I don't think I saw an announcement of it on their instagram (yet). I just bought a copy. It's the same pressing at the same price. I don't think I saw them on their website a couple weeks ago when I was on there
12:47 Thor and Roxas LOL
I have kind of given up on ordering direct from Rhino after 2 less than stellar experiences it would have to be something really good for me to break that trend every once in awhile my local shop will get stuff like the recent Deep Purple the last Devo release that was a double LP that I originally pre-ordered from Rhino before I knew better after not receiving it before I saw the color variant copy in local shop Rhino sent me a copy with duplicate LPs and bent corners in a pizza box 8 days after the release date. Than I had to send it back on my dime which they offered only after me emailing them my complaints.
Re: the Doobie Brothers & Grateful Dead's American Beauty titles I would say: Big time "analytical". Absolutely. Horrible even. At least we both agree on the Devo. That's the best Rhino HiFi in the series. Plenty detailed but not as aggressive as the rest which will melt the wax in your ears.
I like these videos Mike
Hey Mike , thx for the info and love the discussion. I have a question for you… have you heard the Mofi reissue of Dire Straits debut album ? Curious on the sound and whether it’s worth the $$. I have a store selling it for $80 Cdn.that’s about $60 USD. Deal or not? Worth the cost? I do have two OG’s , one Cnd press the other UK. Would there be enough difference.
What about Rhinos new Dolby atmos collection?
Mike, So only 70 titles of the "75 for 75" Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series titles have been announced. Do you suppose the 5 unannounced titles will be Led Zeppelin ?
I'm not concerned about not finding these in the record stores and I feel others should avoid such trappings as well.. There are too many variables for people to get bent out of shape over, i.e. missing a release they may not have even known about.
I SO hope they do Duty now for the future also 🤘
So to be clear, you bought multiple copies of the s/t Sabbath at $39.99? Now that they’re sold out, you’re selling them through your store for $134.99?
So, to be clear, are you accusing me, Mike, owner of The 'In' Groove record store in Phoenix, of buying records and then turning around and selling them for more?
@@TheInGrooveThat’s not an answer to the question.
@@TheInGroove Bro is actually bragging about scalping his customers
Big surprise… the Rock titles sell out quick and the Jazz titles get released to brick and mortar stores. See?! The people have spoken 😂. More Rock! Surprised he didn’t show Candy-O. And Rhino High Fi just did Bad Company self titled too! I’m so glad ‘cuz I didn’t want a 45 rpm 2 LP of an 8 song record.
The fact you can only get these on their website kinda sucks because you have to pay the added cost of shipping. The $40 price point for these I think is lower then what AP and MoFi are charging but then Rhino is hittung you $10 to ship which seems high to me for a single album.
It turns a $40 record into an over $50 plus tax if you live in a state with a sales tax
And from what I’ve seen on You Tube the shipping isn’t great and very slow and the customer service leaves a lot to be desired from what I’ve read
And only printing 5;000 copies definitely puts the FOMO factor into play.
$10 for shipping in a crappy mailer so your album arrives dinged up.
You think $10 shipping is high 😂
Try living in Australia mate, shipping costs more than the album itself

@@crazyprayingmantis5596 That’s crazy ! I don’t see how anyone overseas can order anything from the states. It’s a bad business model I think. You are hurting a large base of potential customers that would buy your records.
I had a warped copy of the Ornette Coleman record and they did a good job of sending me a replacement... I would say they were along the same lines as working with VMP, which is not amazing You have to send an email and then send a video or picture of the defect. I much prefer just being able to bring something back to the store or send back to Amazon.

I agree with the Grateful Dead, could never get into them. Other unpopular opinions include the Eagles and Steely Dan.
I love giving Steely Dan fans crap, especially AJA loving audiophile ones 😂
You speak eloquently and with knowledge.
Never was completely into that Devo album. Yes, there were some great hits on there but overall it didn’t do that much for me. My favorite Devo albums are the first 2. Duty Now for the Future is one of the most underrated albums made and their 1st one was so groundbreaking.
I wish I had gotten into these at the very beginning - it already feels too late to start collecting these!
Universal have a Trust Pilot rating of 1 in the UK
Hey Rhino, go ahead and order a title from AS and see how your stuff arrives. Then just clone that. Problem solved. I totally agree, great review and what a fantastic series!
It looks like more than half of your copies are sealed!
Add Yes - Relayer & Bad Co. - Self Title to the list now. Really don't understand picking Bad Co., I already have the Atlantic 75th that came out recently, 33 vs 45 blah blah blah, I don't need both, I'lll pass. Still waiting on Zeppelin.....
You look healthy.
The original pressing of The Cars album sounds much better than then the Rhino 'High Fidelity' reissue. It was like I took a blanket off my speakers when I put on original after the Rhino. My whole family agreed.
It's controversial because you guys make it so. You can't hear the music for the mastering. I have the white label promo of Television's Marquee Moon and I'm always blown away.
I have a mint WLP of that too!!😊
Their packaging is really bad. Just got three in a sub-par package. All three have dented bent corners. Sound is great just need to step up their shipping and packaging.
Wasn’t too impressed with the Rhino Black Sabbath. My copy from the 80’s is much more balanced.
Ozzy is too up front like Iommi, Geezer, and Ward are his backing band. My reissue of Masters Of Reality from about 10 years ago is the same - have to turn it down every time Ozzy comes in. Peaks in the 2k-6k range? Not sure if this is a Sharon thing to make Ozzy stand out more from the band on recent reissues. Again, my older copies, although probably not the best, have his vocals sitting in better with the band.
That original Devo Warner Brothers is a terrible pressing of a great lp.
Dude bro, American Beauty is a classic, though night and day compared to The Devo.
I don't think anybody would take that new Rhino Black Sabbath over the first press UK vertigo. Nobody
I would
I did
The UK Vertigo sounds much better! Your ears might be plugged or just shot.
People would actually. These are people who are WRONG!
I would too
Are these Vinyl Me Please titles? They sure look like them.
If so....AVOID!!
If not,I want full disclosure on the mastering process written plainly on the hype banner or sticker.
You should too.
Did you even watch the video?
To my dismay... why do you stack the vinyl flat like a record on a turntable instead of positioning upright? You're really kill me. Regardless of the sound, why do you do that?
That small ammount is not going to hurt those thick jackets. Not enough weight especially short term for a 15 minute video

It was just for the video, obviously, as you can see shelfs full of vinyl in the background behind him, all stored upright. ;)
