Chris was such a sweet, beautiful, funny guy. We worked together for years at The Record Exchange in Raleigh. He was smart, knowledgeable, curious, and as you see from his collection, super-crazy passionate about every kind of music. If only more people could be so readily open to so many different things. I'm incredibly grateful to you for posting this video. Watching you flip through his collection was like seeing old home movies. Memories of Chris and our time together came flooding back. Thank you.

If Dillon does know, he certainly made the right decision to keep the focus on all the incredible music. After 30 years, Chris' family and Dylan will get these records out of the basement and back into circulation, to be shared, played and enjoyed. And as if on cue, my computer is now playing "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun". Damn, Chris LOVED Paul's Boutique. Peace @@wealthvisionnews9980

This is AWESOME.. thank you so much. I'm crying like a baby right now though... Chris was my boyfriend when we were like 15-16 ... I played in a band called NrG and his band Massive Arm Linkage did a couple shows with us. Later on we both ended up living in Raleigh NC and remained friends. His death was a great loss to humanity he was the sweetest most sincere person. Thanks so much for giving this the attention it deserves.

I knew Chris when I lived in Raleigh. Used to hang out at his place on Dixie Ave in the late 80's and listen to Bongwater, Butthole Surfers, Sun Ra, etc...Last time I saw Chris I was working with a landscaping company that took care of the area that the Mission Valley Record Exchange was located. We would always hang for about 5 minutes before he opened the store. I really do miss Chris. BTW, I just about fell over when this video popped up randomly this morning in my youtube "Recommended". First thing I thought before I clicked play was "weird, I was friends with a guy named Chris Whitson growing up."

Ths is amazing. I can't comprehend how a 23 year old in 1992 had all these records, and knew about all these genres - even working in a record shop, to have this kind of knowledge in a pre-internet era is crazy. Kudos to Chris, looking forward to hearing Massive Arm Linkage.

I think the key is that he worked in a record store and maybe had older colleagues that recommended stuff. This collection seems to be about 2/3 American 1/3 British and nothing really from any other country. Also, has obscure stuff from well-known artists rather than really obscure bands.

The thing is back then the thrill was in finding and hearing these things. There was a whole "underground scene" involved and it involved many adventures, bootlegs, mix tapes, limited pressings, 'zines, dead ends, and word of mouth. I can remember watching a good friend pay the princely sum of $100+ ($150?) for an original vinyl Misfits "Walk Among Us" LP (pink cover and all) back in 1987 or '88. We had to drive maybe 3 hours just to get to the record store that was selling it. Chris was clearly an exceptional guy with an amazing collection for sure.

Witnessed a friend pay $100+ for an original Misfits "Walk Among Us" LP, pink cover and all, back in what was probably 1987...he was also the best skater I knew and became a very good bass player soon thereafter.

I was so moved by this story. Thank you for sharing it with us! I think the fact that you were the one who purchased Chris' collection and were there with his family when they found the lost recording of his band was a sign that Chris is happy with his family's decision and you were the right person to share his collection with the world.
While I'm amazed by Chris' eclectic taste in music, especially because he didn't have access to the internet and was 23!, I'm even more blown away by the legacy of WHO Chris was as a human being. Without meeting Chris, it's been a gift to read about him in the comments.
Thank you Chris for being such a wonderful human and spreading your light and love into this world. I love how this story of Chris' life and his love of music is able to connect us all. Music is such a great bridge--uniting us rather than dividing us.

What a beautiful story, and I've got to commend you Dylan for sticking by the family and making this about their love and care towards this young man's budding record collection. What an incredible taste in music and knowledge of so many genres and styles at such a young age! Makes his passing even more sadder.
I always love the connections between music and 'owners'. I'm based in the UK and years ago I won an auction online for a bunch of records being sold in Birmingham. Turns out the son was selling them on behalf of his dad who used to do some pioneering world music/ethnic music/jazz/breakbeat nights back in the mid 80s. His dad had passed on suddenly, and he was glad someone with similar taste was interested in them. Feel honoured to have that collection, and feel a sense of duty to take good care of it!

Kind of like an amalgam of my record collection, my brother's and my dad's. Recognised so many of them.... Chris would have been exactly the same age as I am now. I had a lot of those records but sold them over the years. But I don't even have that many records now, 30 years on. And I never stopped buying them. I think I had about 300 records when I was 23.

What a great idea with the stickers to pay tribute to this young man’s collection. It is something that he collected all these at such a young age. Dylan your videos continue to improve and I look forward to seeing them

It's aw-ite. I left my records with my brother when I joined the Air Force in 1978. In 2015, I went to my brother's house and thumbed through his records. Low and behold I saw my records! J Geils Band Full House, all Led Zeppelin albums available to 1977, The Cars, Peter Frampton, Humble Pie, Bad Company, Black Sabbath, Bowie, Deep Purple, and many more! Fished out all my albums that day LOL.

Love the story of your interaction with the family. Very emotional. This hits hard, about how much a record collection could create such an emotional bond. Wonderful.
