I'm 71 and went through my various favourites over the decades just as this gentleman has,and probably loved the same bands he does, and I also love contemporary bands,Meshuggah,Gatecreeper,Black Dahlia Murder,in fact any of the bands in the Death Metal genre but probably my all time favourite band is Cannibal Corpse who I still go to watch live when they tour the UK or Europe.I ain't dead yet kids!!
My best recent record "find" has been coming across your UA-cam channel! It's been fantastic fun and incredibly informative watching and learning about these record collectors/aficionados and their collections and wealth of knowledge. Simply PRICELESS!!!
Wow! Compared to my collection...or any other collection I've seen...this is a massive one! I hope Steve lives to be 100 and keeps on digging up those gems!!
A great collection! And the guy in the video had the opportunity to build up his collection at a time when you could pick up things cheap. Nowadays the internet has made stores much more savvy about prices meaning that there generally aren't the hidden gems waiting to be uncovered anymore. You can get lucky once in a while but overall the golden age of record shopping is long gone.
I think the golden age of vinyl buying wasn't that long ago... In my experience I'd go around the charity shops 13 years ago, and you'd just come back with a rucksack full of vinyl... about a quid each... all decent stuff, Beatles, Bowie tonnes of Kate Bush, Stones, Zeppelin, it was like heaven, I thought it would last forever. It all died about 10 years ago, you'd get all the vinyl twts elbowing you out of the way and cutting Infront of you, and dkheads at car boots expecting you to pay 15 for some crappy album at car boots. That's when I stopped looking. You don't have to be as old as this geezer to have caught it!.
What an amazing collection! Steve is in the envious position of being there when these albums were released. I can only dream of a collection like this. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Wow,,he's got all! Remember him from the record fairs, came to our stall quite a few times, we specialised in bootlegs, didnt realise he had that hoard of treasures! Fabulous. Would have loved to have seen what zappa stuff he had!, bet it was impressive!
Thats a great album to have as a gift...i have that in my collection...stick with it as its a superb Blues album...What a great kind man to allow you to look at his collection and take you on a tour of his shops he looks in...Superb stuff 👍👍👍
@@thevinylhunters Visited this weekend. One of the best if not the best record store that I have ever visited. Did I find anything - too many to list! I left with an original physical graffiti, an original rainbow down to earth, Yes - Relayer, and a first press of in the court of king crimson. I was so tempted with that one they have on the wall. maybe if my wife wasnt with me thats the one I would have got. She did get a 1977 Starwars audio vinyl. - my comment to her was all this amazing music and you buy that. Will be going there again in December.
Obviously a nice guy and always cool to hear from the guys of an age who've been doing it since day one. I know a few similar type chaps and love hearing their stories of getting 'insert rarity' for 50p back in the day. Steven wasn't looking for or collecting rare records back in the day. He was looking for records he'd never seen before and taking a punt on them. It just transpires those records are now collectable and musically great in a lot of cases. Jake, you need to check out Mighty Baby, especially their 1st lp....killer record. Please buy the book Galactic Ramble and learn about the UK psych, prog, rock, folk rarities. Cheers Nige
It’s so awesome the first album he bought was please please me when it came out!! Thanks for this guy and his wisdom and his collection man this is great
I love collecting vinyls, im 50,,sex pistols huge collection, bootlegs the works, and i collect adam ant as well, got about lots of other vinyls as well many artists, and genres. I feel vinyls are such nice things to have, i love gigs as well going to see adam ant live soon.
Hello Jake, Wow, what an incredibly good video from you. This man has so many great and rare Vertigo Swirl pressings, a dream, and I'm still looking for them all. Wow, great video. It was a lot of fun to watch. Best wishes, Julian
@@thevinylhunters I believe it's the Affinity oder Black Sababth Vol 4. I definitely need these two albums in my collection. It will be fun to look for them.
@@thevinylhunters It set off my OCD too, as did the lack of poly sleeves, however a friend of mine has also never used them and his collection has survived decades, still all somehow in mint condition! Just careful handling & storage I guess.
Love that his musical tastes have adapted over time and he keeps up with newer artists (like myself). Great collection!! I'd also really like to see what these collectors are playing their collection on.
What a legend. Lots of "Woah!" moments as he was pulling stuff out. Seeing his original copy of Please, Please Me definitely made an impression, as it made me realize how he experienced the very rapid development of rock in real time. Not often you see a copy of Julian's Treatment - A Time Before This!
When i started collecting records in the late 60s early 70s there were very many Vertigo swirls on the racks going for pennies, after hearing some of them they went straight back to the shop! The best Vertigo records then were by Black Sabbath, Status Quo, May Blitz, Uriah Heep and Colosseum but many others were not to my liking as Vertigo was an "experimental" label, Charisma and Harvest were my favourite labels at the time.
Tredegar, named after the Welsh town of the same name,I seem to remember they had something to do with the late Burke Shelley of Budgie, themselves a Welsh band of course.
First single was knocked it off, BA robertson 1979, then ashes to ashes david bowie, first album prince charming adam and the ants, still got them all today sound good as well.
The label stamp dramatically devalues it but if vinyl was a low mileage near mint then for £400 that is still good. I would be interested to have seen Hokus Poke and the price put on it. Most I have ever spent is £1100 on a nice UK 1st of Dr Z.
Nice collection, have a fair few of those myself and some of his ‘wants’ I’ve sold quite a few of mine over the years though. My pride and joy is my original Billy Nichols would you believe which I bought for £150 in 1987. You can’t take em with you when you go! (I’ll pass on to my kids with instructions)
I had to sell a massive rock collection for probate with a huge Swirly selection. The guy was originally from Glasgow and was a friend of Ian Gillan (I have a letter from Ian who was asking R if he could pick him up a particular bootleg which he was having difficulty finding!) Personally, as a collector it was really hard breaking up 40+ years of collection, but it's what the family wanted... There was also a Swedish Sabbath boot 'Kill Yorself to Death' - note the rare 1st press spelling! that was autographed by all 4 members and below the credits with the date and p&c symbols was a big black marker question mark with Bill asking 'Where's my f*****g royalties?'
What a fantastic collection! Too bad all the covers are blurred when he shows them. I get it it's because of the photos on the shelves in the background.
Would be great if you could list all the records mentioned in these collector videos in the description or link to a text list. Sometimes the name is hard to make out and the cover has nothing on it/is hard to read.
When I saw that huge pile of Vertigo rare records piled up like that on the table, I thought to myself... 'Yikes' !!! That's no way to treat records of that caliber - by placing so many on top of each other. (at the very least) he could have made two or three stacked piles, to protect the records/covers from damage. But, yes it was an awesome sight - including so many other amazing valuable records he has accumulated over so many years. No doubt Barry Winton has a lot more tucked away in amongst his vast collection, but, you never got that luxury to see them - as he mixes them all up together with the less valuable vinyl titles he has which makes up the majority. I must admit though, that I do prefer seeing all the rarer titles kept together like that. Let's face it. If there was a FIRE (god forbid) - at least he can grab hold of the rarer titles and save them - as they would be the most expensive to ever replace, although, I bet his favourites from a Musical standpoint - shall be records he possesses which are not worth that much at all. Loved the video though, I hope you get to see many more collections in the future and film them to !! 🤩
Can anyone tell me any more information about that budgie record that was in revolver records? (The one that only 500 copies was made). I can’t find any information about it online 😅
I’m not totally sure but I got the impression it wasn’t actually a Budgie record but rather something put out by an ex-member? Correct me if I’m wrong though. Edit: Just checked and yes, the band and album are both Tredegar.
I use plastic sleeves all the time for the opposite reason this gentleman doesn't,easier to slide the album in when I'm running out of space which is most of the time....

What a lovely knowledgeable and generous man, great to hear observations and experiences from people of this generation.
Top top video😊 I love the attitude towards collecting that it doesn’t have to be rare, just what you like 👍
