When I worked in construction over the 5 years I did it. I honestly just wore a carhartt hoodie and a a few long sleeve shirts. With how much I was moving I kept warm even on the coldest of Detroit days. And it allowed me to remove layers through the day. Also gave me the flexibility I needed in my arms.
Love an actual scientifically measured test instead of marketing BS. Wish I could find one of these for hunting clothes. Would like to know how the uber expensive Sitka and First Lite stuff stacks up against their claims. Thanks for this content.
Hey Carl, First off, thank you for all of your in-depth videos on work wear. Your focus on form, function and style means I get to look great getting the job done. I discovered your channel several years ago because I was on a job in upstate NY and shredded all the tacticool pants I brought for the job. I was complaining to anyone else on the crew that would listen about how my overpriced pants were not cutting it until one of them said to go get some carhartts and shut the hell up already. Growing up in Miami Carhartt wasn’t really a thing so I started doing some online research and your channel caught my eye. Since then (partly due to your videos) I have spent a small fortune on Carhartt jackets and pants as well as two or three Filson items and my favorite of them all, my Flint & Tinder wool lined waxed canvas trucker jacket! I work in the film industry so I’m outdoors 16 hours a day when on set so your guidance has come in handy. I just watched your Best Carhartt jackets of 2023 video to see if there is yet another jacket that I just can’t live with out and it left me with a feeling that Carhartt is heading in a direction that I’m not sure is good. By that I mean all of the new materials and getting away from the classics. It seems that they are trying to capture the the more sport / camping / Starbucks crowd. If so, I’m sure it’s great for their bottom line but I’m concerned that I just found a great thing and now it’s all going to change. Since you have your finger on their pulse, what do you think? Thanks again for all your work. Rick
I own a #6, and it is so warm that it will damn near burn you out of it. Definitely warmer than it ever needed to be here in Southern Illinois. Our winters rarely get very cold anymore and it hardly ever snows. The best reason to purchase one though, is that unlike the popular hiking brands like North face and Patagonia, it's as warm as they are and it doesn't rip like their jackets. Always seem to. You. Snag them once, and you can kiss them goodbye! The same cannot be said about my Carhartt jacket. It is made with cordura and is extremely hard to snag or rip.
I have to say, I got the Montana jacket last year to wear while I plow snow with my tractor (which doesn’t have a cab) and I have to say it’s the second warmest jacket I own not by much. Easily could wear with just a base layer down to 10F. Perfect for sitting on a tractor for an hour or two. I just wish it was a little longer in the back.
@@BringerOfZZa My warmest jacket is a Patagonia Hyper Puff Belay jacket I got at an outlet for roughly the same price as the Montana. That coat with just a shirt on underneath I can wear before 20F still be very comfortable. I have worn it in -15 F with a 15 degree windchill just needing an R1 and a base layer underneath. The Montana is pretty close to that warm but honestly I bet it would feel warmer if it went lower in the back.
While maybe not the warmest, my personal favorite is the Bartlett jacket. It’s distinct from Active jackets with its signature chest pockets, but similar enough that you know it’s genuinely made for work and not a fashion piece like some newer Carhartt jackets. However… my favorite RARE Carhartt jacket is the Aztec Active jacket, with a southwestern style band across the chest and shoulders. Even better if you can find it in red. Red is a RARE Carhartt color, but they never disappoint.
Agree 100% about the high-viz jacket. Finding a high-viz jacket that doesn't suck to wear in cold & wet weather is surprisingly hard. Great to see Carhartt making a good winter option.
I’m getting a carhartt jacket because my other one has holes in it from being used a lot. These jackets are very reliable and will definitely buy another when the time comes.
Always enjoy watching these Carhartt warmth rankings. One thing I will note though, I really dislike how Carhartt stripped the names of all of these tried and true jackets & coats. When they made the change a few years ago and as they said “We made it easier to find the info you need by simplifying our tags” in reality they gave all these coats & jackets long & confusing names. For instance one of their most popular jackets- The Bartlett jacket is now called the -RELAXED FIT WASHED DUCK SHERPA-LINED UTILITY JACKET Or the Steel Jacket is now called the - FULL SWING® RELAXED FIT RIPSTOP INSULATED JACKET I think for the average customer (at least to me) all the names sound the same now, not sure it helps out anyone trying to identify one of their favorite jackets now.
Any ideas on why they stopped with the yukon extreme parka? I have that one as well as the yukon extreme active jacket. Love both, break out the parka for harsh winter days, crank out the active most winter days, and the heavyweight sweatshirt w/liner for moderate winter days. The parky is a bit big/bulky and quite expensive, but boy is it warm. Industrial/commercial HVAC/R tech, so plenty of rooftop winter days/nights.
I've worked for Carhartt for over 10 years and my favorite for cold weather is the Yukon Extremes Active Jac. But for fall temps my favorite is the original Sandstone Detroit Jacket, J97. Not the new Detroit Jacket, which I don't care for. It's still a nice jacket but I prefer the older ones that I have, and I have 3 of them in 3 different colors. I laughed when you mentioned the Detroit Jacket and how Matthew McConaughey wore one in the movie Interstellar. When that movie came out we could not keep those things on the shelf and they were flying out the door. My Detroit jackets are all what they called sandstone and not the more rigid duck material, and the new one is only available in black and Carharttt brown which is all they have now for the Detroit Jacket. And I don't care for the drop tail on the new Detroit jacket and you don't get the snaps on either side at the back to cinch it up around the waist a little. I have one in Carhartt brown, one in gray, or what I think they called gravel and one in a color they called camel. Altogether I probably got about fifteen or sixteen different Carhartt coats and jackets. And I wish they would bring back one they called the Santa Fe which I have in a two tone black and gray and has a western yoke styling. But I think the most valuable one I have is the 100th anniversary Chore Coat which came in denim with a lining of 100% wool from Faribault mills. And has a label on the inside signed by the person who sewed it.
It's funny you said you've never seen the duck traditional coat "in the wild" because that's my favorite carhartt coat and I just got my 2nd traditional coat embroidered for work after my 1st got completely worn through.
Life is a soup and I'm a fork. Thanks for the jacket rundown, really helpful. I think they sometimes give certain products different names for things here in the UK. Cheers 🍻
Ive had my quick duck jacket for over 10 years. The arms seem to be coming apart ,but other than that, it's held on strong through all sorts of work, from logging to snow removal in the winter
Life is a soup and I'm a fork ! Thanks Carl for updating this. I just went back and watched your old video on the Carhartt jacket warmth rating last week. Any idea why they stopped selling the Yukon Extremes parka? Are people buying Refrigiwear or something instead of Carhartt for cold climates?
Is there any place to get the info relating to the actual warmth rating? It’s okay to say this is Carhartt’s warmest coat, but what does that actually mean? Is it rated to wear at the Antarctic, a Montana winter, or a cold day in North Carolina? There should be a chart that lists the actual comfort rating in degree Fahrenheit.
I live in NW Montana and I want to buy the Montana jacket. WTF is level 4? Is it good to minus 20, minus 40, or what? What is a clo of 1.9? And if we are ever told what the temperature parameters are, does the rating apply at rest, light activity, extreme activity, or what? if someone is trying to sell a jacket that could handle the coldest conditions on earth, shouldn't they give us at least a vague definition of whatever the F$%k "coldest conditions" means? I work outside and it can get down to minus thirty on some occasions and below zero quite often if it is a bad winter. How about the wind chill factor? I'd rather see minus twenty than a wind chill factor of minus ten! I love Carhartt but I am surprised they can't be more specific. BTW, the "off the rack" jackets by Northface, Columbia, Eddy Bauer, etc. don't cut the mustard in Big Sky Country. I'll still buy the Montana jacket on faith but Carhartt is leaving money on the table by not being specific!
I find #19 Relaxed Fit Washed Duck Lined - Utility Jacket is my go to Carhartt my only issue in my opinion is the neck is wide open, in the colder days I actually need to wear a scarf, because you can't the wind off your neck even with the hood up. Great video and thank you for your opinion and happy holidays to all.
Im not sure if this has been asked already or not. Would you happen to know how truewerks high vis jackets would compare to the carhartt sherwood jacket? I got the yukon extreme active jacket a year or two ago. Its very nice for working in cold weather, but im looking into getting a high vis coat for winter. I got some truewerk shirts and pants this year and have been very pleased with them. Sorry for how long this is getting. Been a while since I've watched your videos, the quality is still as good as always. Keep up the good work Carl.
hi new to your channel , came across while looking at reviews for hoodies ,did have a bearskin hoodie older version ,while mine is warm in cold and humid and windy weather i find you will need a outer coat, since they now have the 3.0 ??, anyway i have a quilted Carhartt jacket and overalls since 2001 still going strong , yes it has worn around the sleeves, pockets and i should repair some of the velcro patches on the flap goes across the zipper ,its my go to coat when working outside ,the overalls are still in great shape , just a testament to the quality of carhartt
Hey Carl, any chance you will do some reviews for the refrigiwear coveralls or bibs? Quite a few guys in my trade recently gave up on Carharrt due to their outsourcing and mostly to them firing employees who wouldn’t get the shot. So far I’ve had the iron tough coveralls and the 54 gold coveralls. Both were great. Warmer than my Yukon extreme bibs and parka. The iron tough are made in USA and that is a huge plus the 54 gold are not which sucks but the gold ones are about 1/4 the bulk of the iron tough and rated 4* warmer. Now I can’t speak to how long they will last and I’m not laboring in them as I’m a Iuoe operator and they keep me warm on open cab machines .
I want to try one of them new Yukon extremes parks I own the old style in the like active design and also the traditional Yukon extremes .i also own the wip Yukon extremes parka but not wearing that to work..but i have built up quite a lot of jackets for both times work and play/home.
Just ordered the Chore Coat. Never had a Carhartt before except for a cap I randomly bought 2 years ago from a small shop as the sun was too strong. Let's see how it goes. Heard they run big and need to go smaller...
I'm looking for a pullover sweater thats warm for winter but is good for rainy days. I work as a delivery driver so i try to avoid bulkyness. I use thermals and a sweater all winter in chicago. What would you recommend.
I have an unlined (except for the taffeta in the sleeves) carhartt jacket that looks like the detroit jacket. Been my mainstay summer and fall chore coat for over a decade. For a lot of the year I need something that is LESS warm and just offers protection against abrasion. Sucks that it's no longer offered. I been looking for years.
There’s no way the #5 Active Jac comes before the Coat. I have a Arctic Extremes from 2002 ($120) and it is bombproof and if unless the material changed greatly, I can’t imagine this would be #6. I had to run out the door once in sub freezing weather and only had a t-shirt on under my jacket and was almost sweating when i got to my destination a short time later. My wife has been begging me to get a new one because the corduroy collar has faded, even though I’ve re-dyed it a few times, but the cordura looks brand new. Been thinking about getting the Yukon Extremes coat in a Large tall then cutting off the reflective strips.
I have the Sherpa lined coat, it’s warm, I bought a snap on hood and it big, boxy and looks like it has the shoulder pads of a lineman but heck, I bought it on clearance for 75$.
I can’t stand that the hi viz these companies are coming out with are always only available in lime. The RR I work for requires orange hi viz. Great video as always Carl!
I have a 23 that my tool apron wore through the shoulders and the rest is worn through most places. Somebody said it's worth $$ now in that condition???
I have #8 the firm duck insulated brand new an it has a large white spot on it that looks like water mineral or something any idea how to get rid of it?
Washed Duck Sherpa-lined is so amazing it keeps you warm. You guys definitely should buy if you’re out in the cold for any reason. Ladies buy your man this and Men buy yourself this if she doesn’t 🤣🤣🤣
Very true. I have a Rain Defender Rockland Sherpa Lined Hooded Sweatshirt that I wear up to -20C. I put on a Washed Duck Sherpa Lined Coat on top when the temp went down to -40C. I have a thermal shirt for my skin layer and a flannel shirt as mid-layer. Kept me warm outside during the cold snap. Thanks.
I ordered a j140 jacket off Amazon and one directly from carhartt two weeks ago. The Amazon j140 was a knock off. It weighted a lot less and the tags were different than the one that came from Carhartt in Hansen, KY. Buyer beware.
I’ve tried to leave, but negative review review with photos to identify it’s a knock off on Amazon and they deleted it eight times in a row. What does that tell you?
Life is a soup and I'm a fork. I don't know what kind of jacket the Carhartt I have is, but it's decently warm with nice dump pockets and a drawstring waist.
oops i forgot i had the rankings comment open when typing my comment. life is a soup and i'm a fork anyways i live in AZ so i'll stick to the bottom of the list for now, i saw a good explainer for cold weather layering tho in case i ever wanna go up north & see snow up in flagstaff
I use an old canvas jacket or oversized waterproof shell and just layer until I'm warm. I think it would make me feel bad if I abused something that expensive. Life is a soup and I'm a fork; most definitely in this context lol.
I’m a fan of Carhartt, not a fan of seemingly outsourcing everything. I will say for mostly foreign made, it’s still durable stuff. Also their FR line is typically way oversized, I almost exclusively wear non FR carhartt jeans and pants, but needing FR for work I ordered some pants in my usual size 36x34 and my lord the length was more like a 42 lol, I had my wife hem them, Ariat is comparable and true to size as far as FR pants go, carhartt needs to QC their FR line better as far as sizing, ordered a large Carhartt Detroit FR jacket and it was more like a 3xl lol wtf I had to send it back
Why does no one talk about how tight the neck is. Cant zip it all the way up without putting the hood on. It’s so annoying feeling. But other than that I absolutely love the Montana. Or is it just me?

The iron tough are made in USA and that is a huge plus the 54 gold are not which sucks but the gold ones are about 1/4 the bulk of the iron tough and rated 4* warmer. Now I can’t speak to how long they will last and I’m not laboring in them as I’m a Iuoe operator and they keep me warm on open cab machines .
Life is a soup and I'm a fork. Awesome jacket rundown, just keep doing it.
Also, could you do a test or rate on the new yellow pant and top Filson rain suit? Is it worth it?
Hi have you done any videos on the rain defender hoodies ?
I have the new Detroit jacket 103828, old J130 and J140 and I am happy in the winter haha
Can you do women’s Carhartt. There aren’t many videos on them.
I want to try one of them new Yukon extremes parks I own the old style in the like active design and also the traditional Yukon extremes .i also own the wip Yukon extremes parka but not wearing that to work..but i have built up quite a lot of jackets for both times work and play/home.
Where’s the mug from is what I want to know?
Just ordered the Chore Coat. Never had a Carhartt before except for a cap I randomly bought 2 years ago from a small shop as the sun was too strong.
Let's see how it goes. Heard they run big and need to go smaller...
If there's one thing I know, it's that Life is a soup and I am a fork :) - The "warmest" rating is so misleading so thanks for this Carl!
Great overview!
Life is soup and I’m a fork. 😂
I'm looking for a pullover sweater thats warm for winter but is good for rainy days. I work as a delivery driver so i try to avoid bulkyness. I use thermals and a sweater all winter in chicago. What would you recommend.
Idk
I am a lineman . I work on powerlines 💪
I can’t stand that the hi viz these companies are coming out with are always only available in lime. The RR I work for requires orange hi viz. Great video as always Carl!
Yup! We needed orange tear-away on the MNR line. Someone said it was because lime blends in with the spring leaves.
Carhartt Men's Montana Loose Fit Insulated Jacket is it legit off of Amazon? 🤔
I have a 23 that my tool apron wore through the shoulders and the rest is worn through most places. Somebody said it's worth $$ now in that condition???
I got the utility jacket. I like it ok, but it seems to let a lot of air in because of the way it fits.
Can you make a video about gloves? Best every day gloves.
Thank you!
Man all these jackets are so beautiful wish I could buy them all right now!
I have #8 the firm duck insulated brand new an it has a large white spot on it that looks like water mineral or something any idea how to get rid of it?
Life is a soup and I'm a fork.
That Detroit jacket is the perfect spring and fall jacket.
Have you tried out truewerk yet?
I love Carl Hart jackets!
Do any of these jackets have hoods that aren’t oversized for a hard hat or helmet? I’ve tried two, and the hood is so large that it’s unusable.
G'Day very help full video thank you, your Green T-shirt , make and where i can ger one? plz. thank you.
Thanks.
I have an older version chore coat. Wear it nearly everyday
Thanks a lot for this.
Nice rundown of all the options currently available with actual scientific test results. Life is a soup and I’m a fork! 😂
You’re gonna have to do one every year with how many convoluted jackets carhartt has.
5.30 super popular in michigan
Life is a bowl of soup, and all I gots is a fork ;-[[ It might have few patches, but my Detroit jacket from the 80's is still one of my faves.
I love 💕 Carhartt stuff
Life is a soup and I'm a fork.... Some hot soup sounds good this chilly morning...
oops i forgot i had the rankings comment open when typing my comment. life is a soup and i'm a fork
anyways i live in AZ so i'll stick to the bottom of the list for now, i saw a good explainer for cold weather layering tho in case i ever wanna go up north & see snow up in flagstaff
I want some mens carhartt winter coats 👍👍👍.
I asked my GPS for directions to the funny bone, and it said, "Sorry, life is a soup and I'm a fork."
I use an old canvas jacket or oversized waterproof shell and just layer until I'm warm. I think it would make me feel bad if I abused something that expensive. Life is a soup and I'm a fork; most definitely in this context lol.
Life is a soup and I'm a fork. I've got the chore coat in my cart and this video might have given me the nudge 💸
Cal Songer of Lewistown Montana ❤.
Life is a soup, and im a fork.
Ramen noodle soup is best with a fork. Sometimes trying something that sounds counterintuitive is actually the best.
Do all the Carhartt vests 2024🎉🫡
I’m a fan of Carhartt, not a fan of seemingly outsourcing everything. I will say for mostly foreign made, it’s still durable stuff. Also their FR line is typically way oversized, I almost exclusively wear non FR carhartt jeans and pants, but needing FR for work I ordered some pants in my usual size 36x34 and my lord the length was more like a 42 lol, I had my wife hem them, Ariat is comparable and true to size as far as FR pants go, carhartt needs to QC their FR line better as far as sizing, ordered a large Carhartt Detroit FR jacket and it was more like a 3xl lol wtf I had to send it back
I Have The J 6006...With Hood Coffee...Carhartt
Typos galore but thanks for the video
Carhartt Montana is so good. Almost too warm even in the snow.
Anybody seen the NEW Carhartt Detroit jacket being sold at Dick's Sporting Goods? Pretty nice 👍
Why does no one talk about how tight the neck is. Cant zip it all the way up without putting the hood on. It’s so annoying feeling. But other than that I absolutely love the Montana. Or is it just me?
"Life is a Soup, and I'm a Fork".thanks
Is that an Apple Watch Ultra?
Yes sir
@@CarlMurawski good taste. You got a follow now.
the active jack, or as I call it, the FFA kid starter kit.
Life is a soup and I'm a fork.
I wear my carhartt Detroit jacket at work when it's cold.
