@@lukasmarten6660with canvas it’s especially true, extra heavy canvas is relatively inexpensive and like he said in the video there’s only a few factory’s that make the waxed canvas for these jackets, they’re basically all the same
Just bought the workhorse V8 as my """last""" jacket, I'm browsing through everything I can find about waxed canvas as I've never experienced this kind of fabric before and it really feels indestructible.
I recently got my Workhorse V8 a few days ago and I've been wearing it nonstop. I don't normally buy expensive jackets, but this thing is a beast. Just feeling its construction immediately lets you know that Carl isn't joking when he says that triple-stitching waxed canvas is no easy feat. The triple seams feel like iron, and it amazes me how the jacket can feel so light and so freaking durable at the same time, it's like nothing I've felt on my Carhartt, Duluth or even 1620 products. Though I doubt I'll get to test its anti-water properties soon (living in SoCal) I can attest that this is easily the best jacket worth my money because it's insanely functional, well thought out, and even stylish.
Really appreciate the work it takes to make this type of video. The information here is so valuable to people looking to invest in a quality coat. That said, I feel like the filson you chose really isn’t the right filson jacket to compare to these. Their short-lined tin cloth cruiser is their most popular waxed jacket by a country mile and would probably be better suited for this video than the one in here. Regardless, exceptional video and thank you for the work you put into this type of content. Cheers!
I saw the tin duck on an earlier review. I got one and love the fit and quality, when I ordered it I received an email to check sizing and was able to get the sleeve length longer. Best fitting jacket I own, I love it. Can’t say enough about the quality and customer service.
My kids got me the Roark Axeman X Halley Stevensons Jacket last Christmas. Great Jacket. I’ve worn it the rain and snow and it is awesome. Keeps me warm and dry!

Yeah I'm wondering why he didnt include the Tin Cloth Short Lined Cruiser Jacket. It's awesome and I love mine too. Would be a better representation in my opinion rather than this Aberdeen which is literally the lightest oil finish of all Filson jackets and not even Tin Cloth.
@@CoffeeWithCarl1 Kinda curious why you picked one of their worst pieces even way back whenever you bought it. I'd slide that Filson jacket under the Rogue Territory one tbh in design. I think the tin cloth short lined cruiser or their regular tin cloth cruiser would've been more fair. But I getcha, budget and whatnot.
You’re a complicated fellow Carl, having a vested interest in a jacket. Sorry, the pun was just sitting there and I couldn’t help myself. The Flint & Tinder jacket serves my needs well enough but that Triple Aught looks phenomenal! I’m a sucker for the herringbone pattern so that might have something to do with it. It may just be time to add a jacket to my collection.
Have the flannel-lined Flint & Tinder jacket, and for a little more stylish look the Kuhl Outlaw waxed jacket (with a lighter flannel lining). Both great jackets, but I find myself wearing the Kuhl out and about most often, and the F&T only when out clearing snow or stuff in the yard.
Great video and I really appreciate you going over your thoughts for the ranking, knowing why things land where they did really helps because we don't all have the same requirements/preferences. That said for the price the Iron and Resin is an excellent jacket I think should be closer to the Freenote in the placing. Two way zipper, action gussets, snaps, lots of pockets, it's excellent if it fits your body type. Bummer about not being made in USA.
Thanks for another great video, it's crazy to say but someone who is smart, knowledgeable, and honest seems to be becoming pretty rare. I'm a Barbour guy, being British, there might be a bias involved- bias aside though, Barbour jackets do the job and the cost per wear makes them economical. All the best
I have my Barbour Bedale for over 40 years. I sent it for re-waxing about 3 years ago and it still looks brand new. For water repellence it’s top notch. Cons, it’s a little thin for cold weather. I do have an original zip in liner but it’s also not too warm. So in the cold weather you have to layer up. Re-waxing was inexpensive. And I believe it you tear a Barbour jacket they will repair it.
Tin Duck is a one man shop. Handmade top quality craftsmanship! Gussets and extra pockets can be added as you can customize your jacket!! Construction is impeccable, with strong stitching, definitely not single stitched!
Great video, Carl! One of my favorites so far. A not so well known brand you could check out is Peregrine from the UK. Huckberry stocks them and they might fall in between Barbour and Belstaff. Slim fitting motorcycle styles. LL Bean just came out with the 1924 Field Coat in waxed Millerain and that looks/feels great. Lastly, Taylor Stitch always runs a few waxed jacket models, but I'm guessing TS would fall towards the lower end of quality spectrum. You should've showcased your Tensaw! I love my Tensaw and Kingsman waxed vest.
The king Of Cool , wore Belstaff and if they’re good enough for Steve McQueen, they good enough for me to own two Trailmasters . I like how they patina and mild to your body over time, I’ve owned mine for years and they’re still going strong and get plenty of wear , here in the U.K.
Adore my Freenote jacket, only had it a couple weeks and it picks up compliments all the time. The cotton lining is nice, wool would be nice too but doesn’t bother me either way. The jacket as a whole just feels like it’ll last forever and I agree on the shoulder gussets, it’s my first waxed jacket with them and they’re a game changer!
@pyramidcranes2213 got the 20 Oz wool version recently too and love it. So Carl's criticism is a bit off as there's clearly a woolen version available that he mentions a lot himself.
Really enjoyed this video. I own the Iron and Resin and was biting my nails when you were ranking it. Lol. Im on the leaner side, so the fit works for me and I enjoy the uneven wax, as it seems more rugged to my eye. I also feel like its fairly heavy and couldnt imagine wearing a 24oz beast. Just wish it was made in the US. Im also really lucky to have won a Belstaff jacket at the LA distinguished gentleman's ride. Its beautiful and a tank (mainly due to the armor), but its really flexible and not stiff at all.
I love the look of that TAD Internal WX! A waxed herringbone?? Brilliant! I have a Flint & Tinder waxed jacket but it’s not the trucker. It’s the hunting style, which the model name I can’t think of at the moment. It’s in an olive color & I dig it, but don’t find it to be very warm. So I’ll throw those electric warmers in the back game pocket, which warms the kidneys quite well.
Freenote Cloth and Ship John win for me. Best construction, features and looks. The heat straps looks like a Carhartt Detroit with an unflattering fit and while i understand his appreciation of the thedi ita clearly in a total different range pricewise and has a different aesthetic. Its more like the one honorable mention instead of a clear winner to me.
I have a Thedi Leathers waxed canvas/leather jacket on order right now (should be arriving soon). It is a different, longer model. It is supposedly made from old US WWII surplus tents and buffalo leather. I got measured at the Thedi shop in Thessaloniki.
Owned several Outback Trading Oilskin jackets from the late 80'- early 90's. Still have my Trebark Camo Pattern Oilskin...great hunting jacket. Easy to reproof. Always wanted a waxed jacket.
@@CarlMurawski I am very pleased with it. This is my first time trying the Staywax, and I really like the dry finish to it. It's nice to not feel sticky or having a gunked up watch face. There's also the Schaefer Outfitter jackets, which are known in the western world. They seemed super high quality, but they did a price hike + outsourced their production out of the USA in the past two years, and they're now made in Turkey (their other products also got outsourced to multiple countries).
This is a bad ass video it’s a ton of work to just buy all of this product and create the comparison. I just became aware of Bradley mountain as a brand. Ordered their Wilder Waxed canvas backpack. Might need to think about that jacket. Ughhh lol.
Awesome video! Your videos have helped me in recent months to build my wardrobe while having less but owning better quality clothing…. I would definitely recommend checking out the Filson short lined cruiser jacket. Only downside is it’s not made in the USA anymore. Still an awesome jacket. It was also featured in Yellowstone.
Brave Star Denim just uploaded an Iron Side 18oz dry wax that's available for pre-order @ $168. Looks promising, and Bravestar is amazing quality, at least from my experience.
I bought a Bradley Mountain field jacket last month. It cost me a kidney to import it here to Belgium, but it was definitely worth it. I especially love the inner wool lining, it's beautiful. The only thing that bothers me is the chest pocket which is a bit too small.
Tin Duck FTW! I've been to the factory space in Washington and got to meet the owner/ operator Jason. It is a one man shop right now, and he's really great to work with. I got to see a bunch of prototype jackets hes been working on and try them on. He took my measurements for a better fit and let me add some features like the gusseted shoulders you mentioned (those are standard on his new Truck Rider model). It's really cool to support truly local businesses like this that aren't just outsourcing all the real manufacturing. I really hope he does well.
I've got a Tin Duck and it is great . It's custom made to my specs also . Can't say enough good things about it . The flint and tender is a beast for the price .
Everyone talks about the Ship John Will’s jacket, but the sleeper pick is the Ramblin’ jacket. I swung by the store to try the Wills for size and really didn’t like the fit. The Ramblin’ jacket on the other hand fit perfectly and wasn’t as bulky.
Just thought you should know Carl. I'm one year into my electrical apprenticeship I just hung pipe in an industrial cooler at a Costco. I wore some Carhartt bibs that your videos helped me out with. Any advice on winter boots?
Sure! It depends on budget of course, but I always liked wearing thicker socks rather than insulated boots. Winter weight Darn Tough Vermont and change them at lunch break. It makes a huge difference.
I actually got the halley stevenson waxed hudson jacket last year from flint and tinder. Such a great piece. But for this year I struck thrifting gold by finding an old avirex made in usa leather jacket
Just got the devium waxed jacket. It is rugged, 4lbs, warm. It looks like I've already been using it for years. It's a little bit shorter. It was very waxed
Ive been wearing my Ship John Wills for over a year now. Love it and very often get comments, buts it's seriously heavy so really is a 4-5 months per year jacket here in the UK!
I wouldn't say so. The perfect weather is cool and dry for it, but of course is waxed so is weather resistant too. If you just want one jacket for the year it's probably not it, but I certainly haven't regretted my purchase.
Great video. Would love to see you do Manifattura Ceccarelli if you get around to it. They have an awesome deck jacket and winter parka (I can’t remember if it’s their mountain jacket or fisherman’s jacket). I believe they used to be the factory that manufactured for Filson some years ago before launching their own brand.
Are you familiar with the brand Manifattura Ceccarelli? They have higher end (more expensive, at least) waxed shirts, jackets, and longer winter and mountain coats that may interest you Another Italian brand is Shangri-La Heritage. I don’t know how often they have waxed jackets, but also have higher end leather and wool coats/jackets as well as a custom option
Great video Carl! Did you get one of the Bradley Mountain jackets? Would like to see what that one looks like as I’ve heard it’s great…but cropped short which is something that’s a deal breaker for me.
Over the years I have acquired a few, Filson, Orvis, Huckberry, and a Lands End quilted insulated one. The huckberry is the only one that is a button Trucker patter, mine has the original all cotton flannel. Its the most "wet" and has a good "look". But the orvis one I prob wear the most as its lighter and it uses a zipper, so its just easier to grab and go. The filson I just got, its a crewman but its more stiff and heavyweight than the rest, its a dry wax which is nice. The Lands end is insulated so warmer, I actually wear that a lot in the winter, the waxed canvas has held up nice vs a standard poly or nylon outer. I'm getting into sherpa lined jackets recently, looking at bespoke post, which is sort of emerging as a more affordable version of huckberry.
For me, Rouge Territory lined Ridgeline is the best fitting and sharpest looking. Satin lined sleeves and wool body lining. I grab this jacket first before all others in my closet. I have three from rouge. One lined, non lined, and black denim. All Ridgeline model. I love their jackets. James Bond wore one, enough said.
Carl I just noticed we have a new workwear brand that's emerged. Well I think it's new I haven't noticed it before and I inquired to them why they didn't sell a hat. It's Thorogood workwear.
Hey Carl, I really enjoy your channel. I'm looking to buy a waxed jacket, like you I'm a bit stocky (5'8, 180 lbs). I'm trying to determine my size based on your modeling. You seem to wear a large or extra large. Based on my stats would I wear the same sizes? Thanks for your help.
I have a Barbour (Bedale), Tom Beckbe (Tensaw), and a Heat Straps (workhorse). All 3 are good for the purpose I bought them for. The Barbour is amazing for a night out with the wife (not jeans a t-shirt kinds of places). The Tom Beckbe is amazing for light to mid weight daily wear. And the Heat Straps is FTS (F*** This S***) cold weather.
I have a Filson waxed trucker jacket and love it, but for some damn reason, the model they picked for the website was like six-foot-twenty, and the jacket looks like a bolero on him! Like the tall man from the Phantasm movies moved to the PNW..... Dunno who okayed that.

Thats right, Rips jacket was a black Filson short cruiser. I forgot about that.
Brave Star Denim just uploaded an Iron Side 18oz dry wax that's available for pre-order @ $168. Looks promising, and Bravestar is amazing quality, at least from my experience.
Important to note that it's an unlined jacket for guys who live outside of the colder regions or prefer to do their own layering
Real digging the heat straps workhorse and the Bradley Mountain.
I bought a Bradley Mountain field jacket last month. It cost me a kidney to import it here to Belgium, but it was definitely worth it. I especially love the inner wool lining, it's beautiful. The only thing that bothers me is the chest pocket which is a bit too small.
I dont own any of these, but that would be my choice as well. Glad you are liking it. Maybe I will try one someday!
Killer video, Carl. I'm just waiting for the day you'll sell me that Ship John…
Ayyyy... everything is for sale Taylor! (Or trade for a nice knaf....)
Why wasn't Barbour rated in your final ranking?
It's Barbour Bedale. It's a place in Yorkshire.
Great vid man, keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
I own an Iron & Resin waxed jacket. Love it.
WHAT FLANNEL ARE YOU WEARING, CARL!? Please, I must know. The red and black looks so good on you!
Thank you! That’s the Camp shirt from Kato. It will be in the upcoming flannel guide video.
@@CarlMurawski Thank you - I love the pattern/weave!
@@sssnrrr “a new medium” brand released a similar flannel yesterday. It’s heavy too. Check it out
Tin Duck FTW!
Flint and tinder wool lined is king
JJWorkwear is the real sleeper, that not many know about….Under $150 for a 14oz waxed canvas jacket, lined, gusseted, etc. I love mine.
Everyone talks about the Ship John Will’s jacket, but the sleeper pick is the Ramblin’ jacket. I swung by the store to try the Wills for size and really didn’t like the fit. The Ramblin’ jacket on the other hand fit perfectly and wasn’t as bulky.
I have the Babour Northumbria, which is fantastic.
Wish this video came out last week!
I been wondering about waxed jackets for awhile. Just way too cheap to buy one. I love my carhartt shirt jacket.
Filson Tin Cloth?
And it does feel slim, kinda tight
Devium is an awesome brand!
Been waiting on this one !
I hope it didn't disappoint!
@@CarlMurawskicertainly not !
And I thought I had splurged on my Shaeffer Outfitter waxed brush jacket....guess I went cheap. But I'll keep it.
Ive been wearing my Ship John Wills for over a year now. Love it and very often get comments, buts it's seriously heavy so really is a 4-5 months per year jacket here in the UK!
I'm uk too and looked at ordering one. Is it too warm for our weather?
They have higher end (more expensive, at least) waxed shirts, jackets, and longer winter and mountain coats that may interest you
Another Italian brand is Shangri-La Heritage.
This was a great video. Especially for me since I don't really like the look of waxed jackets so I'm not tempted by any of these! 😂
Fair enough!
I like my Folsom tin cloth cruiser sooo much, but it kinda pisses me off that it lacks interior pockets!
Next time I come to New York I might nip up north ont train and let you see a Belstaff 👌🏼🙂🦉
You're welcome any time Scott!
I have a Filson American made waxed Jack shirt. Been a great jacket. Great in cool and cold weather
Very cool!
You need to review Dri- Z-A-Bone from Australia. They beat Barbour because true full length for horse riding
Cool! Want to buy a barely used Hunter Supply Jacket?
@@CarlMurawski Sure, what size?
@@stuntmanjohnny The XL shown in this video
@@CoffeeWithCarl1 Thanks but that wont fit me.
Carl I just noticed we have a new workwear brand that's emerged. Well I think it's new I haven't noticed it before and I inquired to them why they didn't sell a hat. It's Thorogood workwear.
Interesting! The footwear brand is making clothes now?
Great job on the video I learned something from you video I did not know that my home town made the Bradley Mountain jacket
Glad I could help!
What shirt is that you are wearing?
Brave Star dropped a jacket right after this video.
